More Classic Music from Disney.......2002-02-27

This third CD of Disney music is a good mixture of the old with the new. Track 1: "Colors of the Wind" from POCAHONTAS is one of the best songs composed to date for a motion picture. Track 18: "Bella Notte" from LADY AND THE TRAMP brings back many memories as does Track 21: "The Ballad of Davy Crockett" from television show and movies. Going back even further is Track 24: "Little April Shower" from BAMBI, which is an interesting composition representing nature's beauty, fury and return to tranquility. Track 6: "Les Poissons" is a great number from THE LITTLE MERMAID that is well composed musically but also is used to advance the story of the film. This is yet another great CD in this series.

NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS.......2001-03-18

Burton movies are great. Burton movies with Elfman's music... well, they're out of this world. Nightmare before Christmas is my favorite movie of all times, and someone who hasn't seen it, doesn't have to make those comments. It's a movie full of great feelings; plus the music is great. Someone who hasn't seen the movie wouldn't understand "Jack's Lament"... I invite Caroline to see it and THEN critize it. BEST MOVIE OF ALL TIMES.

These Disney CD's are so great. People of all ages can enjoy them. My favorite is volume 2. My 3 year old LOVES it but so does my 22 year old friend!

Nightmare Before Christmas Rocks!.......2000-08-25

Anyone who would suggest that Jack's Lament and Nightmare Before Christmas was not good, without even seeing the movie should not be allowed to make reviews on websites. It's a great movie and Danny Elfman is a brilliant composer. Hey let's hear it for the lady who can't handle anything more complex than, "M.I.C.K.E..." you know what I mean...I get a little upset thats all...

A great collection of songs.......2000-04-01

I loved the first two cds of this series, and I love this one as well, but I can honestly give it only four stars. I loved 'Mine, Mine, Mine" because David Ogden Stiers sings a part in it, and "Les Poissons" was great because Rene Auberjonois sings it (he played the Changling in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine), and does a wonderful job. I also loved "Are We Dancing" from The Happiest Millionaire, one of my favorite Disney movies. But the one thing I disliked was the song from "Nightmare Before Christmas". That was one movie that didn't need to be made. I'll admit, I never saw it, but I don't have to to know that it wasn't something I'd enjoy. Just listening to "Jack's Lament" tells me enough. This cd didn't need that song, and that is why I can only give this one four stars.

Acoustic redo of 80s hair rock.......2007-04-13

You have to dig hearing these classics in a fresh version. Accept's Balls to the Wall is just haunting. One major oversight is Firehouse's When I Look into Your Eyes, that was a repeat from Vol.1 and makes this lose a star.

If you are a 80's hair band fan and want to hear them unplugged= this along with volume 1 and 2 are what you need!

Hit or Miss.......2007-03-15

I'm a fan of all 3 of these CDs as I like of the bands on them. Like the other 2, I find this one to be pretty much hit or miss as well. I think the best new tracks are Tommy and Jack's High Enough, Eric Martin's Just Take My Heart and Autograph's Turn Up The Radio. Eric Martin still has the voice to pull off probably every song in Mr. Big's catalog acoustically. Some of the new tracks are still really good like Jani's Heaven and Kix' track. Other tracks have been offered up before from various sources so who hasn't heard Tesla's Signs a million times and seen Poison's MTV Unplugged show?

Low points on this compilation for me are what I consider to be one of the worst tracks I've heard in years in Slaughter's Up All Night. It's from a live performance and it's just dreadful. I don't know how this even made it onto this CD, it's laughable. William Hung could have done better with this track. I don't think Ratt's Way Cool Jr is much better.

Very odd arangement for Accept's Balls To the Wall, but it's not bad... just unexpected.

Again, like the other 2 CDs in this series there are several new gems, some re-releases and some garbage. For fans of the genre like me, I think they're a lot of fun though.

A bluesy classic from 1979.......2004-02-18

Hank's music has three main roots - country, blues and rock'n'roll. The blues influence is less evident than the other two on some of his other albums but it is strong on this one. The majority of the album (the first four and the last three tracks) is quite mellow, though three consecutive tracks in the middle (I fought the law, Family tradition, Only Daddy that'll walk the line) pick up the tempo.

Family tradition is one of several great songs that Hank has written about himself and his father. I guess it was written in response to people who said that he wasn't like his father, especially his musical style. In the song, Hank lists all the ways in which he is like his father - drinking, smoking, singing and living out his songs.

Old flame new fire, Always loving you, We can work it all out, I've got rights and I just ain't been able are all great original songs. Paying on time sounds like an old Crystal Gayle song (Dreaming my dreams with you) with new lyrics. There are several excellent covers including To love somebody (Bee Gees), I fought the law (an American hit for Bobby Fuller but revived in the late seventies by British punk rockers The Clash) and Only Daddy that'll walk the line (Waylon Jennings).

This is not the most instantly appealing of Hank's albums but there is a lot of great music here, which grows on you with repeat plays. If you like your country music served with a strong blues flavor, this is for you.

I have listened to this CD over and over and every time I hear it again it keeps getting better! All of Hank Jr's records are like this.

Buy Classic Alternative: 12" Extended Rare Mixes [BOX SET] instead- much cheaper and it is 3 cd's with all these tracks and so much more -all rare 12" extended versions. These series of Hardest hits and Classic Alternatives by the Canadian label SPG are amazing. It is too bad that most of them are discontinued. Enjoy.

A Fun Compilation.......2004-07-18

A great disc filled with many "lost" remixes, as well as 80's tracks they just don't play on the radio anymore.

Terrific sound quality. A good deal for the money. Plus you get the Dance Mix of "A Girl In Trouble (Is A Temporary Thing)" which is unavailable on CD anywhere else.

Its one of those catchy little tunes that just stuck in my head. "Fools Gold" by the Stone Roses and the dance mix of "A Girl In Trouble" by Romeo Void are superb as well."

This third volume in Rounder Records' ongoing classic-train-song series focuses on the R&B end of the rails. Its scope is perhaps a little too ambitious, since the selections here span nearly 70 years. Amid some pretty timeless competition, 1990s entries from the Holmes Brothers and Linda Tillery sound even more flatly digital (and surprisingly inanimate, given the subject matter) than they might otherwise. But classics like Louis Jordan's "Choo Choo Ch' Boogie" and Little Junior Parker's original recording of "Mystery Train"--which predates Elvis Presley's earth-shattering cover by a full year--give this volume a propulsive swagger that previous bluegrass- and country-centric volumes in the series lack. --Matt Hanks

HELP PLEASE!.......2004-02-26

This is not a review but I am desperate and need help. This is driving me crazy...Years ago my Grandmother used to sing many of the old railroad songs. One of my favorites was The Wreck Of The Old 97. She used to sing another one, but I cannot remember many of the words, therfore I cannot find it ANYWHERE! I am getting desperate trying to find it someplace on line. The song/story is about a conductor driving down the railroad tracks, and when he passes by his house, if his baby is sick (or something like that) the light on the track (or house) will be red. If the baby is OK, the light will be green. I know I did not imagine this song, but I just cannot remember the words. Does anyone have a clue?? I sure hope you can help!

African Americans sing about trains.......2003-03-09

Many compilations of train songs, including others in this series by Rounder, focus on country and folk music, but this set shows that people sang about trains regardless of musical genre or their own ethnic origin. So this set covers blues, jazz, boogie-woogie, R+B, soul and gospel.

Leadbelly adapted Rock Island line in the 1940's, most notably adding the discussion about pig iron and livestock. Others including Johnny Cash and Lonnie Donegan covered his version in the 1950's and beyond. However, the version here, by Linda Tillery and the cultural heritage choir, is more faithful to the song as it existed before Leadbelly made the changes that we now tend to assume were always there.

The version of Mystery train here is by Little Esther (actually Esther Phillips) and the robins. Esther had a top ten American hit in the sixties with Release me, a song which was originally a country hit for Ray Price but which is now associated with Engelbert Humperdinck. Esther does a superb job on Mystery Train.

A high standard is maintained throughout this set, beginning with Louis Jordan's classic rendition of Choo choo ch' boogie. Other train classics can be found here, including Trouble in mind and Boogie-woogie choo choo train.

Looking for help finding words to an old train song........1999-02-03

I am looking for the words to a song my father use to sing to my sister and I 45 years ago. I believe the title might be "Pulling Old #9". The words started "O n a cold winters night, not a start was in sight and the north wind came howing down the line. There stood a brave engineer with his sweetheart so dear and his orders to pull old #9. I know this is not a review but can you or someone help me find this song? Thank you very much. Earle Putnam

Disney has once again put some of its most liked songs into a single album. The songs on this CD are some of my favorite songs and I'd recomend the CD for anyone that has kids or just likes the songs.
