Editorial Reviews

They may look like just another boy group, but Ohio's 98 Degrees more likely found their role models in smooth crooners Boyz II Men than in New Kids on the Block. It was backstage at a Boyz II Men concert, in fact, that they met their manager and scored a deal, going on to platinum sales in Asia (à la 'N Sync in Germany) before having a hit on home soil. That song, "Invisible Man," is just one of many supersweet slow jams on their debut that give it that slightly more credible R&B edge (others worth checking out include "Was It Something I Didn't Say?" and "Heaven's Missing an Angel"). Uptempo tracks like "Come and Get It" and "Dreaming," however, show that they still know how to pop. --Rebecca Wallwork

The soul-tinged harmonies 98 Degrees showcased in the top 10 hit "Because of You" are far more credible than those of other late-'90s teen-beat groups, but then there's plenty of star-making power behind the scenes: producers Trackmasters and Pras provide the funk on the '70s-esque "Heat It Up" and "Fly with Me," respectively; Stevie Wonder cameos on "True to Your Heart"; and the powerful ballad "I Do (Cherish You)" is a remake of Mark Wills's country hit. Their best weapon, though, is the soul in lead singers Jeff Timmons and Nick Lachey's vocal cords. Occasional 'N Sync-like pop ("The Hardest Thing," "To Me You're Everything") can be forgiven thanks to an impressive a cappella version of Michael Jackson's "She's Out of My Life" and the disco-happy "Do You Wanna Dance?" --Rebecca Wallwork

1 out of 5 stars Whats alll the hype?.......2006-07-01

I really do not see what people see in this. They are no different the the backstreet boys, and n'sync. You can find a son about love any day, any time. Trust me, this is nothing even remotely close to special, or original. This is just another band that got caught up in the trend of "boy bands" or whatever you guys call it. 98 degrees will just be forgotten like any other band that sold out.

3 out of 5 stars Very Cute!.......2006-06-01

I had listened to a couple of their albums prior to this one, and I remember, none of them were bad at all. Yes, they are "pop", but they aren't annoying, something that usually comes with being a pop star. I enjoyed listening to 98 Degree's album, "98 Degrees and Rising". They are just so cute! They have nice voices, and they sound really good together. The lyrics are nice, but nothing complex, which is understandable since they sing pop music, and that type of music typically caters to a teen audience. "Do You Wanna Dance", "Heat it Up" and "Fly With Me" are all faster tempo songs, and any of them have the potential to get a party started! I like the lyrics to "Heat it Up". "Baby, let me love you to the 98th degree..." They did a nice job of covering Michael Jackson's "She's Out of My Life". They used to instrumentation, they did it a capella. They included harmony and had a very listenable finished product.

These boys know how to croon as well. "Still", "Because of You" and oh my goodness, "(I Do) Cherish You" are all so sweet. "(I Do) Cherish You" is sensational. "Hardest Thng" is one of my favorite pop songs. It used to come on the radio all the time, so they forced it on the public.

I recommened this CD to r&b and pop fans. This album definitely contains some r&b elements, so I feel fans of both types of music would enjoy it. And ladies, these men are not at all har don the eyes. hehe

Wow! If they keep doing this to me, i am going to have to get a boyfriend soon. This group is not a boyband, but a collection of voices that get you through your rough day. Drew and Nick keep leaving me hot and bothered. Thanks Guys!

5 out of 5 stars A musical masterpiece!.......2005-11-18

Although I am not a musical expert by any means, I do love music. I have an eclectic taste in music, and I know what I like. My friend and I were at our local Wal-Mart scanning the music section when I came across this record. I was immediately flustered the first time I laid eyes upon Mr. Lachey. I knew that this man had some special talent to tap raw human emotion by means of his larynx. I listened to some samples, and I broke down in tears in that aisle. My friend and a Wal-Mart employee had to help me to my feet. I cradled this CD to the counter, where I promptly purchased it. I arrived home, and put this disc into my player, and wept because of the purity of each and every tone. Listening to this CD is more satisfying than a fine wine, a robust cigar, or a beautiful woman. Days would pass where all I would only sit and listen. I began to skip meals, and I lost my job because I would not come to work due to this, or I would listen to it at work. I would recommend this product to anyone who wants to know what dreams are made of. I have sent numerous letters to Mr. Lachey explaining to him my feelings, but between touring and composing more beautiful magnum opuses, he more than likely has not had the change to get back to me. Oh, Mr. Lachey! I cry blood and bleed tears for thine!

98 Degrees' smooth, sanitized soul and lush, precise harmonies are more akin to Boyz II Men than the Backstreet Boys. Which is not to say that they attract a different audience than their boy-band brethren; their simplistic but addictive songs of love and heartbreak seem torn from the pages of a Harlequin romance. The 13 songs on this best-of are culled from their 4 albums (including "This Gift" from their Christmas collection), and they rely heavily on lead vocalist Nick Lachey's breathy vocals, well-crafted melodies, and sparse production, but why tinker with a winning formula? These very songs have racked up nearly $10 million in sales for the band. What they lack in imagination, they make up for in guest appearances. Mariah Carey not only loaned them "Thank God I Found You," the song she penned with Terry Lewis, but her voice pushes the romantic ballad to stunning heights. The band also gets a boost when label mate Stevie Wonder takes a verse of "True to Your Heart." His seemingly effortless vocals and trademark harmonica transform the beat-heavy tune into an old-school classic. --Jaan Uhelszki

4 out of 5 stars good collection.......2007-07-23

I was in my late teens/early 20s when 98 Degrees was popular. They were one of the few "boy bands" that I did enjoy during the mid-to-late 90s. Their music was more R&B oriented than their peers. This CD is a good collection of their hit singles.

5 out of 5 stars The Collection.......2007-01-11

If you want all of 98 degree's songs in one CD... this is the CD to buy. I can't stop listening to it. Plus there is a bonus - it plays clips of their music videos on DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive Classic Collection.......2006-06-28

Gosh! Where was I during their reign? I believe I was into rock at the time.

Learned about Nick Lachey from the Newlyweds reality show and fell in love with his soulful voice from the show's theme song, "This I Swear". I instantly became a fan and got both of his albums and now I've got Nick fever, so I went back to his roots--98 Degrees. My first purchase is this collection of their greatest hits and I love, love it. Of course I got the rest of their albums and its good to hear all of their songs.

There is this soulful and harmonious quality to their voices that is unique and listening to them is relaxing and soothing to the soul and puts one in a good mood. It's easy listening for work and on leisurely days at home with your significant other. All the songs are great and I just can't pick a favorite, it's heavy with Nick's lead vocals which I like. These songs are what I would consider classic--they are enjoyable 6+ years later and will be for many more years to come.

I am in awe at the talent of this group, and even more so after watching Nick's VHI's Behind the Music and learned about their humble beginnings; how they love to sing and worked very hard at their craft. They're fantastic and definitely deserved better recognition.

Nick has an admirable, soulful voice and his talent is quite amazing. (I'm glad to see him out of that dreadful shadow and doing quite well on his own and getting the deserving recognition for his 2nd solo album). Jeff's voice is amazing as well and superb, and Justin and Drew are fabulous and blend in well producing great harmony together. I would most certainly hope that 98 Degrees reunites to make more beautiful music for their fans and future generations to enjoy.

4 out of 5 stars Greatest hits from 98 Degrees...mostly good!.......2006-04-24

Don't you miss the boy-bands era? There were Hanson, Backstreet Boys, N*Sync, and yes, 98 Degrees. Everybody knows who was in that band: Nick Lachey (check out his "Soulo" and upcoming album "What's Left Of Me" if you like this album!), Justin, Jeff, and Drew (Dancing With the Stars!) This album has all their hits, from "Invisible Man" to "Why", and their biggest hit "The Hardest Thing". Other great songs are "Because Of You", "My Everything", "Was It Something I Didn't Say", and "Thank God I Found You (w/ Mariah Carey)". However, I found their fast songs not half as good as their ballads..."Give Me Just One More Night" is quite repetitve, and in the middle of the song, there was a part where a girl is speaking Spanish...I find that quite lame. I didn't care for "True To Your Heart" neither. However, this album is quite great if you don't own their previous albums.

Rather than rushing back into the studio to keep the momentum of their sophomore smash 98 Degrees and Rising going, the four hunks of 98 Degrees decided to act more like real musicians and cowrite and produce their third album. And though there is no shortage of balladry on Revelation, the Ohio-bred act has sprinkled some tasty, uptempo flavors into the sugary, lovelorn mix. The opening track, "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche)"--not to be confused with Jennifer Lopez's "Una Noche Mas"--sets the tone with an energetic beat and Spanish guitar. From there, it's back and forth between the harmonized ballads that made 98 Degrees the third most beloved group among the teenage-girl set, and some more daring dance tracks (on "Dizzy," lead crooner Nick Lachey even tries his hand at some dope raps). Thankfully, they've ventured out of the heartsick town where 98 Degrees has always resided, but they've taken a few souvenirs to their new destination: mathematic harmonies, symphonic strings, R&B-tinged pop tunes, and even Richard Marx are along for the ride. Still, they prove that they're not just cogs in some boy-band machine and that they have enough versatility to update their sound every now and again. But don't worry--for those of you who fear there may not be a love song as lovely as "The Hardest Thing" here, Nick, Drew, Jeff, and Justin offer you two new tunes: "My Everything" and "The Way You Are." --Heidi Sherman

3 out of 5 stars First half good, second half somewhat bland.......2006-07-12

I liked 98 Degrees'Revelation when it first came out. But 6 years later, it hasn't aged as well as their rival pop groups at the time. My favorite is still the Latin-flavored Give Me One More Night (Una Noche). It still sounds funky today with the strong percussion heavy sound. Perhaps lead singers Nick and Drew Lachey were influenced by what Marc Anthony, Ricky Martin and Enrique Iglesias were doing at the same time. The Way You Want Me To and Stay the Night are solid. But the album's second half of ballads drag the album down. My Everything is okay, but the other ballads around it range from bland to sometimes boring. They sound colorless and pointless sometimes, the same lovey dovey sappiness that they should have gotten away from. One of them nearly put me to sleep--that's how dull it sounded. They'd be compatible to the ballad style that Nick Lachey is doing now on his current 2006 album, "What's Left of Me." Perhaps the best thing about Revelation is of Jeff Timmons singing lead on a few more songs--it's not Nick singing lead on everything. This may have led to Jeff doing his own solo album. I think that these series of mediocre ballads led to many music critics panning it and putting Revelation on Worst Album of 2000 lists. But I thought the album was okay--it just lacked the punch of the 1998 album that had the most hits. Because I Do (Cherish You) did so very well for the last album, they wanted to see if that same formula could work for Revelation. It somehow didn't.

5 out of 5 stars The Fab 4, Can We Have Some More?.......2005-08-04

98 degrees is one of the best singing outfits in the world today. They prove that on this album, Revelation. It was a revelation when I first heard it. I was surprised at how good they were. They really have mastered their craft. If you like modern pop flavored quartets, pick up this album. It delivers.

5 out of 5 stars Revelation.......2005-06-11

I remember this album when I was in the 8th grade. I love this album. This album is about the men growing musically. This album is an eclectic and ambitious mix of intricate harmonies, symphonic strings,R&B grooves, pop melodies, and hip-hop-inflected rhythms. This record is a great step for the group. This album has been certified 2x Platinum. Remember, this was 2000-2001.

3 out of 5 stars TOO MANY SLOW SONGS.......2005-02-20

The upbeat songs are great, even the pseduo-rap song "Dizzy" is pretty good. I never did like "Give Me One More Night" that much, but the rest of the faster songs are good. Just too many ballads. These guys could sing better than 'Nsync ever could, they should have been more popular. Oh well, we still have this album and the previous "98 degerees and Rising" album to listen to. Oh and by the way, Nick, Drew, and Jeff are the best looking of all of the boy bands put together. YUM!

5 out of 5 stars YES!.......2004-07-31

The album that feature 98's #1 smash, "Give Me Just One Night (Una Noche" that was clearly released to cash in on the latin trend brought out by Jennifer Lopez & Ricky Martin (with Marc Anthony and Louie Vega cashing in right before 98*). This was rather inventive as the pop tarts "above" them (Nsync & Britney) weren't doing it at the time. Christina was already just starting.

The album also features their heavily underrated Adult Contemporary smash "My Everything." For those Jessica S. fans - the video to this featured her and all the other 98* girlfriends/wives.

My favorite song overall was their heavily overlooked single "The Way You Want Me To Do." It was an awesome club=stomper that blended the boys' smooth voices with an electronic vocoder. It was funky and different. The music video was the best as well.

The album even features Mr. Lachey rapping, along with more smooth ballads and club-stompers. The Revelation summer tour was going to be my first concert ever and I had 3rd row floor seats and they were so big they even had the Baha Men, Debelah Morgan AND Dream all as opening acts! It would've been such a great tour for me. Too bad they cancelled it.

This teaches you - buy the cd so you don't miss a thing!

Attention teenage girls: As vocal guy bands go, 98 Degrees sing and snap their fingers with the best in contemporary pop. And while This Christmas is not as engaging or musically adventurous as other holiday albums from vocal tour de forces such as the Persuasions, Take 6, or the Blenders, it is a respectable, if predictable, seasonal effort targeted to their teen audience, chock full of standards and three radio-friendly originals. Those include two versions of "This Gift," a Christmas version that merely adds some sleigh bells and a pop version, sans bells. Their a cappella reading of "Ave Maria" shines above all else, with soaring four-part harmonies in a stirring, awesome arrangement. But just when you think these adolescent heartthrobs have climbed the stairway to heaven, they follow up "Maria" with that cliché-riddled lyrical and musical toss off called "This Gift" (the pop version). Talk about not having your (sequencing) priorities straight. --Martin Keller

5 out of 5 stars Surprising.......2006-10-13

I have to say I was not expecting much from this CD. I was pleasantly surprised to find that it's become one of my favorites. Although I usually only care about the Christmas classics, I really like the original songs on the album, "If Every Day Could Be Christmas," and "This Gift." They also do a great job with some of my all-time favorites, especially "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen" and "I'll be Home for Christmas."

I would recommend this wonderful CD to anyone, not only fans of 98 Degrees.

1 out of 5 stars Love 98 degrees, but..........2002-11-22

The only songs I appreciated were This Gift and Christmas Wish, which were orginals, and very good. The others were all so different in styling, they clashed. You'd get really slow, then it would get lively, then it would get suddenly morose and too serious; I don't appreciate the barber-shop flavor, either. The vocal arrangements didn't suit Christmas at all. I read one reviewer say this album was too slow and sad, and I agree. It's not a 'happy' cd. Really a one star -- one star for effort which I'm sure was present. 98 degrees is a great group, and no one's perfect, but I hope they make a more jolly Christmas one one day. Their beautiful, sincere voices could be so well-suited to Xmas cheer with the right musical line-up. Try Tony Bennett's Christmas Album for a perfectly jazz-ish, jingly Christmas CD.

5 out of 5 stars Sacred harmonies.......2002-01-08

These boys prove that talent is a gift from God and they've gotten that gift. Their exquisite harmonies and gorgeous voices just make this album absolutely brilliant. I recommend this for all Christmas music fans!

5 out of 5 stars This goes beyond "boy band" appeal.......2001-12-04

This is a very listenable Christmas record for all ages, not just the teenage fans. The traditional carols are sung with feeling and reverence, while the newer ones do have actual meaning to them. I do wonder though if anybody feels there's a strong similarity between this album and Lonestar's "This Christmas Time" CD. Not that unusual to have three songs in common on Christmas albums, but the "Little Drummer Boy" interpretations seem rather similar, as well as the general pacing.

5 out of 5 stars Love this Christmas collection and would listen to it anytime of the year..........2006-06-28

I hear the song, "This Gift", on the radio a lot every Christmas and love it so much so I tried to find the album at the stores for the past couple years but couldn't find it. I was ecstatic when I finally found it at amazon.com, accidentally, at the time I was purchasing Nick's new album, What's Left of Me. Thank you guys; I'm one happy gal now and definitely a customer for life!

The album is amazing. I can't stop listening to it even in May and June. The blending of their soulful voices is so pleasing to the senses and one can't deny Nick's talent. I personally prefer listening to the classic Christmas songs but once I heard this group's style and harmony, I was hooked and love their voices.

I love Nick's solo albums and I would like more songs from him, but I would also like to see 98 Degrees reunite and make beautiful and soulful songs once again.

1 out of 5 stars What Is This!.......2000-06-06

This song is almost horrible. The part where they sing I do...cherish you is the only good part. I like The Hardest Thing but other then that I don't really like 98 Degrees.

5 out of 5 stars Love Song for the Two in Love.......1999-12-05

I love this song. This is like the perfect love song. "I Do" is my boyfriend, Matt, and my song. We heard this the first time we danced together. "I Do" is a great song for a wedding.

5 out of 5 stars 98 Degrees and Rising 4 Bonus tracks and video.......2001-07-31

I am a big 98 Degrees fan and I thought this cd was well worth the money! I especially liked the video cd which has the videos for Cherish I Do, The Hardest thing, Because Of You, Was It Something I Didn't Say and the first black and white Invisible Man. The bonus tracks of The Hardest Thing and Because of You are great dance remixes that are not on their other albums. The Christmas cd single of This Gift is one of my favorite songs off their Christmas album

5 out of 5 stars Heartfelt Pop isn't the same without the heat of 98 Degrees!.......2004-04-16

Most people confuse 98 Degrees with today's teen pop boybands. But truly they are not. They simply happened to debut at the same time of those put together by mass production. All four struggled in the beginning together as a group of friends to reach somewhere on the music scene. The guys themselves look up to the musical talents of those like BoyzIIMen and Take 6. There for their music is filled with meaningful lyrics and inspiring harmonies. My personal favorite 98 Degrees album is 98 Degrees & Rising. It shows off their ballad singing talents but mixes in some upbeat tunes. Revelation is more milked to fit the needs of pop, but still good itself. I do recomend buying the CD. Here is how I rate each song:
    1. Una Noche: Great first single! Catchy with a latin flare :) *****
    2. The Way You Want Me To: Great song to dance to :) ****
    3. Stay the Night: Good song to spend making eye contact with you're loved one with and has a nice head boppin' beat. ****
    4. Yesterday's Letter: Shows off the guys vocal abilties well. Beautifully written, and emotionally gets you. *****
    5. He'll Never Be: Fun song for when you're mad at someone! ****
    6. I'll Give It All: Breif, but wonderful accapella work. *****
    7. My Everything: Beautifully written, perfect love ballad *****
    8. You Should be Mine: Unique sounding, but another fun danceable, head boppin' type of song. ****
    9. You Don't Know: Shows off the guys vocals very well, very nice slow song. ***
    10. Dizzy: This song would've been a great single for them. Very danceable and fun :) *****
    11. Way You Do: Gorgeous lyrics, very sweet song! ****
    12. Always You and I: Another good song that shows off the guys' vocal talents. ***
    13. Never Giving up: This song is ok. It has a nice beat, but is not as catchy as some of the others on the CD. **
    14. Never Let Go: A very sweet love ballad. Very well written and sung! ****
    15. Can You Imagine: Very lovely song, good beat. ***

    3 out of 5 stars Ain't That Sweet.......2002-10-25

By the numbers teen pop, earnestly song and carefully crafted, complete with winsome romantic numbers and kiddie boggie numbers. The chiseled good looks of these cute boys make the album perfect for teenage girls and... men
