Like most "overnight sensations," Vonda Shepard had been slogging away for quite a spell--more than a decade's worth of touring and three previous albums, to be precise--before getting to grab the brass ring via the hit TV show Ally McBeal. This disc reprises most of the cover songs Shepard performed during the series' first year, from the ubiquitous "Hooked on a Feeling" to a lovely reading of the '60s nugget "Walk Away Renee." But to Shepard's credit, the smattering of originals don't suffer too much in comparison: In fact, her "Searchin' My Soul" is one of the album's strongest moments. --David Sprague

excellent CD. I had this CD once before and lost it in a divorce. Amazon was the only place I could find to replace it.
Boring Covers but The Few Originals Merit 2 Stars!,.......2006-03-12
From the point of view that this album does indeed contain the tracks that come from the Ally McBeal TV series, this album doesn't disappoint, however, from the point of view that the covers are very inferior renditions of the original, this album makes for very boring listening indeed. If you are going to cover somebody else's work, you should either do it very differently or a lot better than the original. Vonda does neither here but to her credit, the first track which is an original, "Searchin' My Soul" is the best track on the album and is the sole redeeming factor overall. Get this only if you want a souvenir or a memento of what you liked about the tv series but not if you are looking for a great music album.
Fond remembrances.......2004-01-01
I am more convinced than ever that the sages had it all wrong -it's not absence but music that makes the heart grow fonder. At least that's the case with this album, where these familiar oldies are given new life by Vonda Shepard. It's not far from the truth to say that Vonda and her music are as integral to the show as the romances, lawyers, trials and tribulations. "The End of the World" was a great rendition that perfectly caught the heartbreak the words implied. Good collection.
VERY GOOD!.......2003-11-20
That album is great... And premits us to see how Vonda Shepard is talented and how her voice is Wonderful!
She's a marevelous singer/songwriter!
And God, She's so good on stage... It's very great to see her in concert! She's not (as someone said) a simple singer on a bar. She's really talented and really can sing! See her live... You'll see. She really can sing and can make people feeling good during her shows! She's even better live than on the CDs. You'll see when you got the LIVE ALBUM (will probably come out next spring!)
Enjoy her works... (Her solo albums: It's Good Eve, By 7:30, Chinatown!!)
Wow, truely is a must have soundtrack!!!.......2003-08-26
for all you ally fans, and not-fans as well, you must get this c.d!!!
it's so great... it has all the great songs from the show with a touch of country style, flavoured with really tender rock. and Vonda has such a rich, real, beautiful voice that just melts me away...
once you play it you automatically remember the good days of the show, and the feeling is so good..
the album starts off with the great intro to the show: "seaching my soul" which lifts my spirit every day! after that comes the great tracks: "just ask the lonely", "walk away renee" , "hooked on a feeling".
the great remakes ofcoures are "the end of the world" , "in his kiss" and the wonderful "tell him".
simply is a must have!

On this third installment of the Ally McBeal soundtracks series, featured performer Vonda Shepard delivers another solid collection of emotive blues- and country-inflected power ballads. The surprises here are the three tracks sung by the TV show's guest thespian Robert Downey Jr. If this soundtrack was intended to be a star vehicle, it's a jalopy. Downey's contrived rasp, hardened vocals, and awkward phrasing fail to impress (proving that the elongating line of talented actors with musical aspirations should confine their singing fantasies to the shower). On his dumbed-down duet with Sting on the Police classic "Every Breath You Take," Downey sounds like he's straining to emulate Sting, and Sting approaches the song as a walk-through. Fortunately, Barry White's mirror-ball hit "You're the First, the Last, My Everything" and Tina Turner's anthemic "When the Heartache Is Over" provide some much-needed uptempo relief from the album's sluggish middle section. The collection heads home with Shepard and label newbie Anastacia covering Gary Wright's "Love Is Alive" in dance-floor-lite funk (although it suffers the unfortunate coincidence of being released in proximity to Joan Osborne's superior rendition from One Night at McCool's). The CD closes with Shepard's well-orchestrated interpretation of Todd Rundgren's "Can We Still Be Friends," and Ally McBeal fans, despite the Downey debacle, should be able to answer affirmatively with little hesitation. --Beth Massa
Customer Reviews:
Good grooves, chill and enjoy.......2004-08-22
I enjoyed this cd more than I thought I would - not being that much of an Ally McBeal fan. Vonda Shepard has an impressive voice and Robert Downey Jr was surprisingly good also! Al Green, Sting and Tina Turner topped it off perfectly. Good kick back and chill music.
Great CD, especially for Ally McBeal fans!!.......2004-01-03
I really liked the songs on this CD as they relate to the show Ally McBeal of which I was a big fan.
I think Robert Downey Jr. is extremely talented musically and wish he would make his own CD. He has showcased his talent in many of his films and plays musical instruments and writes music as well. He has joined Elton John in concert recently. I think he doesn't get enough credit for his abilities both as an actor and a singer.
This CD is great, especially to Ally McBeal fans as I can picture scenes from the show when I hear the songs and it is like reliving some of the great episodes.
If you like Ally you'll love this one.......2004-01-01
It is impossible to listen to these songs without recalling the various episodes in which they were featured. That, of course, is one of the mysterious qualities of music - the evocation of past time, places and events. This really is a good collection of songs, especially from the bitter-sweet entry/exit of Robert Downey, Jr.
I disagree with the Amazon.com reviewer who criticized the performance of both Downey and Sting. I thought them both magnificent. It was quickly apparent that Downey was not a professional singer but the attempt was valiant and almost heroic. I think of all the action that occurred in that bar, how integral it was to the storyline. It was more important than the office in many ways. Barry White and Al Green shined in their solos performances but it is Vonda who carries the day, she being a star unto herself. Great album.
OOOH!! Robert Downey Jr!.......2003-04-12
The duet with Robert Downey Jr. is divine! The rest of the CD isn't bad either! Great gift for any Ally lover.
The Music With Everything.......2003-03-15
David E. Kelley's hit Fox show, "Ally Mcbeal" had everything- romance, heartbreak, comedy, life lessons, joy and sorrow. It was a very human show, a realistic show for all the computer generated illusions and fantasy sequences. The show itself could have been a Broadway musical, for it was brought to life by songs and expressive music of a wide range of emotions. In its fourth season, Ally Mcbeal experienced her second love- with actor Robert Downey Jr. character Larry Paul. Ally and Larry's love was witty, warm but not without its conflict. Larry was previously married and with a daughter and eventually, his life runs a different course and he leaves Ally. The music in this compilation perfectly expresses the experience.
Vonda Shepard, as always, stars in her brilliant renditions of classics and her singing voice is incredibly moving, touching and sentimental, appropriate background music for a show like Ally Mcbeal. She perfectly brings home "For Once In My Life", "Home Again" and "You and Me". Robert Downey Jr has a duet with Sting in "Every Breath You Take", which although with a few flaws, can still impress. Robert Downey Jr himself has a terrific singing voice and manages to dazzle us with "Chances Are". Al Green sings a moving "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart". Tina Turner raises the roof with a sensational "When The Heartache Is Over" and Barry White does the same with "You're My First, My Last, My Everything". But perhaps the most moving of all the songs in the compilation is Vonda Shepard sining "Alone Again Naturally", which begins with a melancholic string section and then becomes a song of woe and pathos, reaching a climax in her lines "There are more hearts broken in this world than can be mended." The show is alive again with all its emotions and ups and downs.

It's got to be a bit strange for Vonda Shepard. This is her album--she sings and writes the songs--and yet she takes second billing to the TV show that features her as the singer in the unnamed bar. Granted, Shepard had released many solo albums on her own before Ally made her a known commodity, and the songs here are geared to mirror Ms. McBeal's many moods. Here, Shepard is helped out by an impressive cast. Her backing band includes drummer Pete Thomas (Elvis Costello), bassist Davey Faragher (Cracker), and guitarist Val McCallum (Peter Gabriel), and her guest vocalists include the Reverend Al Green for a stunning duet on Lulu's To Sir, with Love," and the Indigo Girls' Emily Saliers on "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow." Rounding out the anthemic originals are covers of Don McLean's "Vincent," Peter & Gordon's "World Without Love," and the Isley Brothers' "This Old Heart of Mine" that unfortunately serve to insinuate that Shepard is not a singer-songwriter but merely a cover girl. --Rob O'Connor
Customer Reviews:
absolutely 5 stars.......2003-09-21
I've always loved this cd - I've always loved the music on Ally McBeal. Recently, I had a beach party - this cd was on my mix - random - everyone went wild! What is this???? Now I've bought 10 copies for all my friends because they love it as much as I do. Vonda Shepard's voice and rhythm are absolutely awesome-what a perfect mix of voice and music. Thank you, Vonda!
An Emotional Experience In Song.......2003-03-15
This is, without question, the greatest compilation of songs from David E. Kelley's "Ally Mcbeal". Songs taken from the third season, a pivotal season because Billy (played by Gil Bellows) dies of a heartattack. It is a time of great heartache and crisis in Ally Mcbeal's life. The romantic disillusion and overwhelming sadness truly makes quality music. Perhaps a lot of music listeners dislike sentimentality, and melancholia, but a lot of great songs in the twentieth century have been tinged with sorrow- Motown made various songs of heartbreak, Dan Mclean, Roy Orbison and various other artists. Grief and sorrow is a part of human nature and real life.
Ally Mcbeal's melancholia seems most poignant in the song "100 Tears Away" but perhaps most powerful in "Crying." These classic songs of woe are sung impressively by the very talented Vonda Shepard. Don Mclean's "Starry Night" is genuinely moving. All the songs are Vonda Shepard renditions, with a few ensemble help. But the sad magic of the show comes alive, making a vivid, lasting impression. This cd was a great way for myself to purge in my own sorrow- my heart was broken in an unsuccessful romantic relationship. Perfect for indulging in sadness (but only to overcome the sadness) are the songs "What Becomes Of The Broken Hearted", "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow" "This Is Crazy Now" and "I Know Him By Heart.".
Collection of Introspective originals and covers from Vonda.......2002-05-27
This is a great collection sung by a relatively unknown singer. Her songwriting is highly commendable on "100 Tears Away" (one of the best songs on this album) and "Baby Don't You Break My Heart Slow". Covers like "Crying", "Sweet InSpiration", "To Sir, With Love" and "Vincent" are also highly listenable. What strikes me is her strong voice and ability to sing a song almost better than the original. She is definately refreshing and I am so sad that we won't be able to witness her artistry on "Alley" anymore, since it has just been announced it is canceled. Get this record and you won't be dissapointed, something to listen to on a cold winter night or just driving down a highway. I am so glad I took a chance on this recording.
Golden 5:
1) 100 Tears Away
2) Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow
3) Vincent
4) To Sir, with love
5) This Old Heart Of Mine

As Good As The First One.......2002-02-07
After the success of their first release, the makers of Ally McBeal have released a second album featuring the fabulous Vonda Shepard performing songs from the hit TV show. Like the first album, this new release contains covers of many old favorites like "Someday We'll Be Together," "Crying," "World Without Love," and "This Old Heart Of Mine (Is Weak For You)". She also does a cover of "Vincent," but the third verse of the song is, sadly, missing. Also, like the first album, it contains songs written by Shepard: "100 Tears Away," about finding happiness through sadness, "Read Your Mind," a rather unextraordinary song about wondering what's in a lover's mind, "Confetti," about "children of elite trying to be street" in an attempt to be heard, and "This Is Crazy Now," about filling an empty space created by the loss of a friend. I'm not as big a fan of the songs that Shepard writes herself, but I do enjoy her renditions of "oldies" songs.
Unlike the first album, which was exclusively Shepard, this album has a couple of fantastic duets. Shepard teams up with Al Green for a fun rendition of "To Sir, With Love," with the lyrics changed to "to you, with love" for the duet. Shepard is joined by Emily Saliers (the Indigo Girls) for a wonderful duet of "Baby, Don't You Break My Heart Slow" written by Shepard. It is an emotional ballad and is, without a doubt, my favorite song on this album. The liner notes contain complete lyrics, and have many more pictures of the cast and of Shepard. This is another great album with talented singers, backup musicians, and background vocalists. If you weren't a fan of the first album, you probably won't like this one any better. However, if you are a fan of the music you hear on the show, or a fan of Vonda Shepard, you will most likely enjoy this album.

Ally McBeal has dominated television for three years, so why not a Christmas album for fans who number 20 million or more? Truth be told, this is really a Vonda Shepard record (she's Ally's TV singing voice), with a little help from the McBeal cast, including Ally (née Calista Flockhart), who successfully tries on Eartha Kitt's silly, sassy, seductive "Santa Baby." With 14 tracks and Macy Gray's distinctive "Winter Wonderland" included, the album covers lots of turf, as Shepard and company cover hymns and carols that are sparsely arranged and appealing for their soulful simplicity. Shepard's soprano talent continues to reveal its many riches. Here's a singer who's at home in a gut-bucket blues tune such as "Please Come Home for Christmas" and strolling down Broadway, joyfully swinging on "The Man with the Bag." Additional surprises include Shepard's duet with Robert Downey Jr. on "White Christmas" and Joni Mitchell's "River." Recommended. --Martin Keller
Customer Reviews:
Excellent for Christmas time.......2007-01-20
I suggest it, it's a very special time generator, the Christmas time.
River.......2007-01-19
I bought this for one song only - River by Robert Downey Jr. It was the only place I could find it, and it was perfect.
Just what I was looking for.......2007-01-11
This is a great party Xmas cd. Very festive and fun at the same time. The song that Robert Downey Jr. sings on this cd called River is the reason I bought it but I am glad I did as the rest of the cd is great also. Good buy and will be enjoyed even by those who don't/didn't like Ally McBeal.
Outstanding!.......2006-03-19
While Christmas shopping, this CD was being played in the store. My friends and I LOVED it! After purchasing it, I could not be happier! I find myself listening to it even after Christmas! It would be hard to choose my favorite song since each and every one is great. A wonderful addition to my Christmas CD collection!
Merry Christmas from Ally & Friends.......2004-01-01
That's what this album really is - the show's gift to the audience. Who can forget the shy, embarrassed Ally with the sexy rendition of "Santa Baby" or the snow-covered streets in the episodes with Robert Downey, Jr. "White Christmas" was unexpectedly filled with pathos while "River" is an almost last hurrah. A few other artists appear but once again, Vonda Shepard saves the day. She carries the album just as she carries the show. Have yourself a Merry, Merry Christmas and buy this CD for someone you love...or for yourself.

Barney Saltzberg, like Sandra Boynton before him, has taken the next logical step in his career as a successful writer of warmhearted but wackadoo kids' books: set his non-story-length juvenile musings to music, enlisting a battalion of big names to help. Unlike Boynton, who let her flamboyant flock of Philadelphia Chickens cluck for themselves, though, Saltzberg goes the extra mile by singing and playing acoustic guitar himself. Other than the story this CD takes its name from, read at a perfect pace by Dustin Hoffman, "Muriel," with the kids' music vet Peter Himmelman, scores highest for its brilliant concept--the title girl's affection for soggy cereal sets the stage for an excruciatingly long breakfast. Elsewhere, Saltzberg switches it up between sweet ("Be With Me," "Best Friends" with Vonda Shepard and Jackson Browne) and silly ("A Big Box of Sox"). The author's gifts for singing and strumming may not win him coffeehouses full of adult fans, but they won't soon wear on grown-up ears, either. And his hair may be crazy, but his heart couldn't be in a righter place: all the artist royalties from this disc go directly to Concern, a cancer research institute. --Tammy La Gorce

Amazing!.......2005-04-06
Vonda Shepard is amazing as a Singer/songwriter and she's even more amazing live! (Hard to believe, ha? lol) You can totally see it on the DvD! She's fabulous and that's what other artists say about her on the Dvd (There are interviews of Julia Fordham, Mitchell Froom (the producer of great artists like the Corrs, Daniel Powter, Sheryl Crow....), David E Kelley (the producer of the Ally McBeal, Boston Public, The Practice, Boston Legal), and the two great singersongwriters of Indigo Girls!
I recommand you that great CD + DvD bonus... You'll see it totally worth it!

Disappointed Fan.......2004-07-18
I fell in love with Vonda's singing the first time I heard her version of "Stary Night". Chinatown was my fourth CD purchase and I was looking for the *real* Vonda, not the *Ally McBeal cover singer* as some of my friends used to call her. Chinatown was pure enough in creativity but disappointing in terms of that "emotional fix" many of her previous recordings provide. I found little worth feeling in this album, especially in the title song: Chinatown left me cold and lonely. "Lose my Way" was the only song I really liked. But we always forgive those we love, so perhaps Vonda was just experimenting some new stuff with Chinatown and her next album will be a return to that wonderful mixture of rock and poetry she hooked me with in the other three CDS I bought before.
Even better live!.......2003-12-21
I've been a fan of Vonda since I started watching Ally McBeal, and when I found out she was playing at the Palace Theatre in London, I was there in a shot, and let me tell you the songs on this album are amazing live. She's got a great stage presence and it's very obvious that she loves music, which makes all the difference for me, coupled with the fact that she wrote/co-wrote every song on this album. Very listenable, very catchy and very worth buying.
starts out really great.............2003-04-09
I have been a fan of Vonda's for a few years now, and was very excited when I came across her new CD. In the store I used my "first three tracks" rule, which basically means that if it is an artist I already know and like I will listen to the first three tracks to see if they pass my listening test. Well, I was quite impressed with the first three, and being a fan I went ahead and purchased it. Once in the car however, I quickly grew disappointed after the third track. It was like she had this great spark of inspiration that then just sort of gradually fizzled out as the recording wears on, (and I do mean wear). Each time I go back to listen to this CD I keep thinking, why couldn't the whole CD be like the first three tracks. Vonda seems to have often been haunted by an uneveniness in her music that sometimes leaves me feeling frustrated. While I really like the first three tracks I would say that unless you are a die hard fan you should seek out other recordings by Vonda before buying this one.
Vonda does it again!.......2003-03-28
This CD is a must get! I admit I'm a huge fan of Vonda. She doesn't dissapoint with Chinatown! If you enjoyed by 7:30 you will love this! It's hard to pick a favorite track on this one but Rain or Shine is it for me. A very special song, one of her balllads to be remembered. My husband and I had the awesome pleasure of seeing her this past weekend, what a show she puts on!We also talked to her afterward. She is such a classsy lady. See her if you can! And get this CD!
Vonda Continues Her Magic!.......2003-03-26
After the Ally McBeal nonsense, I was hoping Vonda would not give it up and return to writing her own brilliant personal compositions and voila, Chinatown hits a home run! It's beautiful, creative and eloquent. The overall production is terrific and clear - as usual you can easily pick out the various/variety of instruments she typically incorporates into her recordings which prevent things from ever getting stale(HEY VONDA WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET A LIVE CD, A LIVE DVD AND A SONGBOOK?). In summary, yes, Vonda is my personal favorite of the music I listen too. I've seen her 2X in concert and was knocked out by her performances. The true test of any recording artist is the live show. To me, Vonda remains one of the most underrated composers, singers, pianst' and talents in the industry. I compare her to James Taylor, Bruce Hornsby, etc. And I could listen to her sing all day long. She is not mainstream; perhaps her songs are too complex for the masses, but she endures, because, in the end, there is no substitute for talent.

Vonda Shepard was a veteran singer/songwriter with spotty success behind her when she caught a break as the musical voice of Ally McBeal. The audience that connected with that popular TV drama quickly took Shepard's music to heart, making a huge success of the 1998 soundtrack album. Now Shepard returns with her fifth disc. Coproduced by Mitchell Froom in a radio-ready style at odds with his experimentation with the likes of Suzanne Vega and Latin Playboys, By 7:30 will surely please those who are primed for its earnest cracked romanticism. Others--the type of listener, for instance, who's less than thrilled to note a guest appearance by Indigo Girl Emily Saliers--are likely to find its overwrought, clichéd sentiments irritating at best. --Rickey Wright
Customer Reviews:
Disappointed.......2007-06-21
I am very disappointed in this CD. Total lack of energy. Vonda is very talented, and I loved her Ally music. To me, other than Confetti, every song on this CD was unlistenable. Vonda has a tendency to go for very non-melodic, even painful sequences with her voice. It just doesn't flow.
A word about the duet.......2006-11-15
Every person's musical sophistication deepens when they break from tradition and listen to something different from what they normally play.
I have yet to find an artist that is a true original, unique to the music world. All artists are influenced by those that came before them and are presently around them.
I love the Indigo Girls. I have heard their music mature over the last twelve years that I've been following them.
I went to their concert in LA yesterday and was amazed at how good they sounded. Then an artist I didn't know and had never heard from before took the stage and played/sang a duet with Emily. It was absolutely beautiful. They sang so well together. After the song ended there was dead silence in the concert hall-everyone was mesmerized. Then the hall broke out into thunderous applause.
A friend told me who the mystery artist was after the show and I am now buying two of her own cds based on that one single event.
I'm concerned that the "Editor" above is clearly biased against the Indigo Girls. Amy and Emily are wonderful singers and Vonda wouldn't have sang with Emily unless she felt it would reveal a deeply beautiful side of the song possibly overlooked the first time around.
One of the best CD's ever.......2006-06-07
I first bought this CD back in 1999 when it came out, and it is still one of my all-time favorites and most frequently played CD's. Vonda has the most beautiful voice I have ever heard and I love her poetic use of words and music. Producer Mitchell Froom (now Vonda's husband!) adds creative instrumentation and polished sound to Vonda's songs, and they sound simply amazing! This CD is perfect to listen to at anytime- whether you are relaxing on your front porch with a cold drink, getting ready to go out, or taking a walk around your neighborhood.
Very Good.......2006-05-13
Vonda Shepard has put out a great CD here. I love her vocal range and intensity. Baby Don't Break my Heart Slow and You and Me are especially good songs. Emily Saliers is a perfect complement to Shepard's voice on the former.
Very different from Ally.......2004-09-20
I have all of the Ally Mc Beal Collection and when I bought this CD I was hoping for something similar in sound.
This is unfortunately not the case. Most of the songs have this underground sound that predominates over Vonda's Voice and thus make your head hurt. My recommendation: Listen before you buy.
