Burt Bacharach's vintage solo albums, while sharing many of the signature songs he and Hal David crafted for the likes of Dionne Warwick and Dusty Springfield, are different experiences than those hit singles. Despite nearly duplicate arrangements, the composer's own renditions of "Reach Out for Me," "Are You There (With Another Girl)," and "The Look of Love" are less dramatic, more laid-back; Bacharach also indulges himself in codas that sound like he's working out bits of movie music. All that said, the 1967 Reach Out is a quite fine example of Bacharach left to his own devices: after three plays, you may well find it irresistible. Burt Bacharach's collaboration with one of the best contemporary lyricists in the music world, Hal David, is one of the greatest things that ever happened in musical history. Their partnership was so fruitful and they were the most prolific pair of songwriters back then. Together, they have produced numerous pop hits in the Billboard and garnered almost all of the major songwriting awards.

This CD is a perfect representation of how great Burt Bacharach is in composing, arranging and conducting an orchestra. He has also played piano on all the eleven tracks. This is a showcase of some of his most beautiful compositions such as "What The World Needs Now Is Love," "A House Is Not A Home," "I Say A Little Prayer," "The Windows of The World," "Alfie" and the very charming "The Look of Love."

On Liner Notes, Derek Taylor wrote:

"If violins and cellos, harpsichord and piano, trumpets, flutes, and sounds of rippling scales have never lightened your spirit;

If your heart has not leapt nor your senses quivered as the conductor's baton taps the music stand;

If Alfie did not become so much a name, more a lonely island of song in a sea of human sadness;

If you believe that the essence of a man and his music can adequately be caught and conveyed within an album liner note;

What so moved, affected me and brought tears to my eyes is Burt Bacharach singing his heart out in the most poignant song of all-time "A House Is Not A Home," with lyrics penned by his long-time collaborator, Hal David.

Rediscovering a gem.......2004-09-17

The last I ever remember hearing this was at the age of 8 and my folks had bought it new on vynil (circa 1968). This album somehow oddly captivated me with its rich detailed orchestrations, heartfelt melodies and varied tonal colors. Years later, I've rediscovered it and it still not only holds up for me but sounds even better than I remembered it.

My favorite cuts are the rollicking "Bond Street", the plaintive "Alfie", the pondering "Lisa", and although 'ol Burt will NEVER go down in history as a singer, I can't help but like his raw, honest pained vocal on "A House Is Not A Home". Actually, I can't think of a track on here I don't like. "The Look of Love" is another stunning track with its rousing brass! As another reviewer mentioned and I agree with, I'd have loved to know who played on these recordings, the musicianship is nothing short of top-flight!

What seals it for me is the fact that without out-front vocals, Burt's music really comes to life and speaks for itself. Classic stuff!

The only reason I'm only giving it 3 stars is because of the absolutely yucko version of "A House Is Not Home". Burt sings it, and he can't. He should have left it as an instumental like most of the material on the album. With that said, it is a good listening album. Perfect cocktail party stuff.

Great Album!.......2001-08-26

My parents bought this album which I sat down to listen to one day and I immediately fell in love with it. Although it wasn't really rock and roll or soul, it had its own pristine pop amalgam that was brilliantly arranged, played, and produced. One of my favorite albums of all time has been on CD since 1995 (low-priced!)with what sounds to my ears like a wonderful remastering job that brings out all the vibrancy of the original recording. Yes, this is the first CD anyone should buy to listen to the stupendous talent of Burt Bacharach in its full glory. Every track is delectable stereo ear-candy, a bouncy, breezy, cool piece of the Sixties. As others have noticed, some of this music was from movies, like the rollicking 'Bond Street,' and 'The Look of Love' which gives glorious spotlight to the brass section of the studio musicians. I wish there were liner notes about these musicians, who they were, when the sessions took place, etc. They had a master composer, arranger, and producer, that whipped-up with them one of the sweetest, spiciest, and flavorful albums of all time. I only wish 'Casino Royale' had been on this album to take it beyond just great.

Highly recommended.......2002-08-20

This pricey UK import CD filled a lot of gaps in my music collection and is an excellent overview of notable music of (mostly) recent films. It's difficult to find consistently listenable soundtrack collections like this, by that I mean free from the obligitory Whitney Houston or Celine Dion embarrassments. Usually rights issues prevent comprehensive compilations like this in the US, too. While I enjoy a lot of soundtrack music, there aren't so many complete soundtracks that I would care to own, some examples of exceptions being Ennio Morricone scores and the About a Boy Soundtrack. While certainly most of these tracks are the actual recordings used in their respective films, I noticed that "La mamma morte" from Philadelphia is not the Maria Callas version. There might be other cases like this, I'm not sure. And "Unchained Melody" from Ghost is an orchestral version, not the pop song (but I consider this a plus). This collection seems to focus on the subtle and quirky, yet melodic music of indie films, with less emphasis on the loud sweeping orchestral scores of major Hollywood hits, but of course there are a few like Gladiator and Braveheart, which are welcome here because like I've said, I probably wouldn't listen to the whole score. I love the two Thomas Newman compositions from American Beauty, and it's good to have some music from films by the Cohen Brothers here. My only complaint would have to be the order of the songs. You would think they would avoid jumping back and forth between pop songs, orchestral scores, and quiet music, but it just seems thrown together by random. I would compare this collection to the excellent "Miramax Films Greatest Hits" but the makers of that album knew to group the two pop/rock songs at the end.

Not half bad.......2007-04-28

While I would agree that this CD can't compete with original material, I would still state that as tribute CDs go, this one has its merits.

Lynn's sole solo CD, since he left ELO and since the Wilbury's died off..."Armchair Theater." is consigned to short attention span reviewers, so I have this one to address.

The cuts are really well recorded and they are cool played really loudly...(my neighbors are knockin,' right now). And isn't that what ELO were always about?

Interesting Project, Varying Quality.......2007-02-15

The inestimable Doug Powell put together a disparate group of artists to cover songs of Jeff Lynne, all the way from The Move to ELO to solo to The Traveling Wilberries.

Although the songs are all superior, some covers are much better than others. I particularly enjoyed Jamie Hoover's cover of "Handle With Care," as well as Todd Rundgren's beautiful take on "Bluebird." Solid contributions also by Swag, Bill Lloyd, Earl Slick, and Jason Falkner.

I might have spliced this down to a single disc, and gotten rid of some of the covers that don't add much. But on balance this is a nice tribute to a great artist.

If you really like Jeff Lynne's music, you will find something to love about this set. As mentioned by others, some of the covers are pretty straight-forward (10538 Overture, Telephone Line, among others) while many are further afield. Some are pretty way-out there, in particular Mr. Blue Sky by Tony Visconti, whose version nearly screams, "I warned you when you asked me to do this tune." But really it's all in fun I think, and most of the cuts improve with every spin.

Personal favorites include Boy Blue, One Summer Dream, Eldorado, Steppin' Out, Don't Bring Me Down, Showdown, Do Ya, and Above the Clouds. Going further about this is futile, it's all a question of taste. But I enjoyed the fresh vocals, simpler arrangements, the sometimes rough edges or techno-styled flourishes, etc.

Give this a try. Of the 2 CDs you'll find at least one whole disc of stuff you'll be glad to own.

"Eldorado" shimmers, but the rest is weak........2004-08-15

"Eldorado" as done by Fleming and John (who?) is amazing and wonderful....the singer just absolutely makes the song her own.

The rest of the album is pretty marginal....every song other than the aforementioned "Eldorado" suffers from either amateurish performance or miles-off-the-mark reinterpretation (i.e, Todd Rundgren's drum-and-bass "Bluebird is Dead": I know the idea seems cool, but- trust me, you *don't* want to pay to hear it.)

Oh well.

Hard to find item........2006-11-11

I was having a pretty hard time looking for several of the songs on this CD. I tried several music services and finally found it at Amazon. The CD is very good quality and plays perfect. There are only three songs on it that I care for but that is typical of CD's and me. If you are looking for the song "Reach out of the Darkness" this is the CD for you. This was the only place I could find that song.

Better than it has a right to be.......2006-06-10

It's admittedly somewhat sad to see the direction Mobley was forced to take just prior to practically disappearing from the music scene altogether. (Seeing him perform live in the early 70's and beyond was difficult to take--all the more so for anyone who recalled his vibrant work with Blakey, his stellar early solo sessions on Blue Note, or his inspired playing on the Miles Davis' Blackhawk sessions.)

After hearing the first track--a wretched and dated pop tune reduced to its rudiments and played, moreover, in the original key of E--I was ready to toss this album. But the three Mobley tunes provide much of substance in terms of Hank's compositional ideas as well as his soloing. Moreover, "Goin' Out of My Head" features some surprisingly inventive Mobley (even though I had to force myself to listen to the tune a second time before realizing it). You may remember that Wes Montgomery's instrumental cover of this tune was a hit, and the inclusion of George Benson on this recording was a happy inspiration, allowing the virtuoso guitarist to show off both his soul/pop and jazz chops. The final tune, Lamont Johnson's "Beverly," is a forgettable "Maiden Voyage" wannabe, but there's plenty of meat between the first and last tunes of this session.

Certainly "Reach Out!" is no more of a sell-out than any number of albums--"period pieces"--under the leadership of Sonny Stitt, who exchanged his Bird-like virtuosity for pop sessions like "Little Green Apples" and "Mr. Bojangles," or who allowed his rich and radiant natural sound to be distorted by an electronic device called the "Varitone." But with Sonny, there were approximately 150 dates under his own name, making it somewhat easier to look beyond the fluff. At the same time, I'd hate to think that listeners new to either Mobley or Stitt might base their judgment of either saxophonist upon what were essentially desperate attempts to make a living.

Rank this session ahead of another late Mobley date--the recently reissued "Hi Voltage." (The supportive liner notes by none other than Nat Hentoff are another plus.) But under no circumstances should you consider picking up this album before obtaining at least 5-6 more vital Mobley sides.

Album Description

Throughout the 90's and into the new millennium, Carlos Guitarlos could be found playing guitar for pocket change on the streets of San Francisco's Mission District. Oftentimes, Carlos slept on those same cold streets where he eventually became a street-corner legend (The SF Bay Guardian name him the city's "Best Street Musician" in 1994). For the one-time musical leader of legendary Los Angeles roots-rockers Top Jimmy & The Rhythm Pigs -- inspiration for the 1984 Van Halen song "Top Jimmy" -- it had been a long, slow downward spiral of divorce, diabetes, and drugs.

In the wake of his hard-knock life, Carlos found himself in a San Francisco hospital, fighting for his life with congestive heart failure. That experience, combined with the alcohol-related death of his friend and former band-mate, Top Jimmy, proved to be the catalyst of his personal turnaround. Within a couple of weeks of his hospital stay, with the help of his family, Carlos finally found his way back into a recording studio, hence the release of "Straight from the Heart" in 2003, which features the helping hands of old pals Mike Watt, John Doe, and Dave Alvin. The album's title track was written from his hospital bed.

Showcasing Carlos's stinging, fluid fretwork, lived-in vocals, and uncanny ability to write original songs in a wide variety of classic styles, the album made Rolling Stone Magazine's "Top Albums of 2003" and it was swiftly picked up for national distribution, a fact that was covered by Billboard Magazine, who described his re-emergence as "one of the most surprising music stories of the year."

The long-awaited follow up, "Hell Can Wait", features a stronger, healthier Carlos on another 19 original compositions. Guest artists include Marcy Levy (Clapton, Shakespear's Sister), Gene Taylor (Blasters, Fabulous Thunderbirds), and David Hidalgo of Los Lobos.

This is a feast.......2005-09-21

This is a feast of traditional American music forms and wry twists. The opening cut sounds like Delta country blues, but perhaps with a little Leon Redbone circa 1970's thrown in. From there the CD rambles through many forms, such as the Fats-Domino-style "Here I Am," the soul stylings (with Marcy Levy) of "I Found a Love," the Los-Lobos-style (with David Hidalgo) "Shake My Blue" and the Doug-Sahm-jukebox music style of "I've Been Drinking Again." But the songs are all Carlos originals, with a co-write credited to Levy and Top Jimmy here and there.

The song "Baby's Coming Home Soon" (not sure exact title) starts out like a session from Dylan's "Everybody Must Get Stoned" and crosses paths with old time blues. "Sure Is Good" has the folks from Double Naught Spy Car throwing in what sounds like a TV theme I can't quite place. Hidalgo, Marcy Levy, and the wonderful Gene Taylor add spice, but it's Carlos who serves up this feast. If you don't like one kind of song, wait until the next cut: there's everything here from calypso style to a hard-to-sing-real-fast bluegrass-tinged number.

Catchy, quirky and very funny........2005-10-11

While browsing the used CD section in my town's local Wherehouse Music store, I stumbled across a band's name in the "R" section that made me laugh out loud. The band was called The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns and their CD was entitled Whip It Out. I just had to buy the CD off of the name alone as that is possibily the goofiest band name I've ever seen and I had to have it in my CD collection.

Imagine my surprise when I actually got home to pop in the CD and how good the CD actually turned out to be.

If you took The Stray Cats, The Clash, Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Weird Al Yankovic, Elvis, ZZ Top, Johnny Cash, Dick Dale & George Jones, threw them all in a musical blender, you would end up with something very close to resembling The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns.

Hailing from Pennsylvania, the band consists of Wendell Jones (vocals), brother Quentin Jones (guitars), Jan Luszczek (upright bass) and Dave Ferrara (drums). This CD called Whip It Out came out in 1997. I think that the band has released one CD since then and from what I can tell on the internet they are still around opening for the likes of some popular artists including Jewel(!). The band calls themselves "psychobilly". Some of the lyrics are extremely sexist but aren't meant to be taken seriously in the least.

Most of the songs on the CD come in at a little over/under 3 minutes. There are 14 tracks in total and they all boast a lot of surprisingly tight musicianship, hilarious lyrics and some smoking upright bass playing (I'm a bass player myself of the electric variety). Plus, I really liked the Elvis like vocal inflections that the singer injected during a lot of the CD.

Just a glimpse of the some of the song titles should give you a bit of insight into what you're in for:

1)Mexico: Starting out with a very brisk tempo and some tight guitar/bass work during the verse sections. Lyrically this deals with an older man wanting to take his underage girlfriend to Mexico "where the heat don't go". The band breaks into more of a half tempo feel during the chorus. Hilarious lyrics!

2)Bad Dudes-A-Surfing: A surf number in the Dick Dale vein that is about some bad surfers taking over a particular beach. Features a great guitar solo.

3)Come Yodel in my Canyon: One of the first double entendree songs of the CD. With a very laid back country feel during the hilarious verse sections, the band then breaks into a fast punk/thrash part with some of the most intentionally bad yodeling you're likely to hear. The tuba is an extra nice touch. Hence the title, it's about a woman telling her lover to come "yodel in her canyon".

4)It's Not the Same Anymore: Sounding like a lost Stray Cats song, this is one of the more rockabilly tracks on. Features a great chorus.

5)Beaver: A more straight ahead blues rocker that is another blatantly sexist track about a woman and her pet beaver. Sounds like it could have come off of the Pulp Fiction soundtrack during the guitar solo. "Well he sits up on a log, goofin' with my dog, she's got a beaver!"

6)She Sure Sucks a Lot: Another more straight ahead blues rocker that has a ZZ Top vibe to it. The title says it all about the lyrical content.

7)The Road to Hell: My personal favorite track off of the CD. A brisk tempo and some great upright bass playing greet the listener. The pseudo-preaching stop/start chorus sections in particular are hilarious. The singer talks about what you'll find on the road to hell (or life on the road as a working rock musician). "YEAH BOY!!!"

8)Bad News Story: One of the more punk sounding songs on the album. Pay particular attention to the upright bass during the verse sections, but this is one of the more generic songs on the CD though I still liked it.

9)Psychobilly Band: A brisk chicken-pickin' country feel finds the singer telling about how he left his life on the "farm" and started a "psychobilly band". Some more fantastic upright bass playing during a few breaks between the choruses and verse sections.

10)Flame-Thrower: The heaviest track on the CD. Very punkish with a much more hard-rock/metal vibe.

11)The Big Guy Stomp: Starting out with a very strange chanting section, this another more straight ahead rocker with some especially funny lyrics.

12)Every Day is Saturday to a Dog: A brisk rock feel meets some great lyrics about life from a dog's point of view.

13)Whip It Out: Another brisk punk feel with some very tongue-in-cheek sexist lyrics.

14)Bodies in my Basement: At first sounds like more of a mid-tempo metal rocker about a guy who is scared to go down in his basement and what he finds when he does finally get the courage to venture down there.

The one complaint that I have with the CD is that the most variety comes during the 1st half of the CD. The 2nd half contains some songs that sound a bit too similar but are still pretty cool. The CD's main advantage is that most of the songs are pretty short and concise. None of them wear out their welcome. The singer in particular really helps out the proceedings with his pseudo-Elvis style delivery. Kind of reminds me of Tortelvis from the now defunct parody/novelty band Dread Zeppelin. The bass player in particular had a very aggressive but smoking playing style that fit very well in the mix and really propelled the songs along.

The production could have been a bit better but as this CD was recorded dirt cheap, it sounds pretty good all things considering. The guitar is a bit loud in the mix at times, but nothing approaching ear killing levels.

It's by no means the deepest or best CD that I've ever heard, but I found myself consistently entertained when listening to it. The band's sense of humor is great but doesn't turn the CD into nothing but a collection of novelty tunes. These guys have a unique sound and I hope that they are still together. This CD seems to represent a very solid stepping off point and they released another CD called Circuit Rider in 2000 which I haven't heard yet but want to try to find.

If you think that you've heard it all and want to check out something that will make you laugh while musically entertaining you at the same time, I highly recommend this CD.

It's a bit uneven at times, but overall makes a worthwhile purchase for adventurous music fans. Plus, how could you not want to own a CD with a band name like The Reach Around Rodeo Clowns anyway?! :)

These guys are tearing-up PA with their comical, rhythmic tunes. I would recommend this band for international tours if I promoted bands! Check them out if you love musical comedy.
