Sometimes you have to hunt down "gems" from the past so it is with this cd. A lot of gems that you didn't hear, and never will on the "format oldies shows" on the air waves. This is a very good cd to purchase

5 out of 5 stars Up on the roof .......2007-01-05

It is difficult to describe the kind of sheer joy and sense of freedom which comes from listening to one song here 'Up on the Roof'. I believe it to be one of the greatest of all pop songs and one which most perfectly expresses that desire to in pure kind of joy , a freedom in joy which comes most naturally in youth.
It is one of the songs which have stayed with me all through the years, and gives pleasure to this day.
There are other fine pieces here, including ' On Broadway' but being up on the roof with the Drifters is as high in my opinion as pop music can go.

5 out of 5 stars The DriftersTunes We Most Remember.......2004-10-02

This is the one, folks! Although Clyde McPhatter made some memorable songs in the early '50s as lead singer for the Drifters (songs later covered successfully by other name artists), the Drifters we most remember had Ben E. King or one of the seven others (count them) who followed him as lead singer. They are all in this compilation. Everybody has a favorite of these; although I like all the "A" sides (and many of the B's), I have always been fond of "Please Stay" (Don't Go) which is virtually never played on the radio. Today many of the Drifters are gone and various groups travel the country singing their songs (sometimes alternately appearing as The Coasters). If you want the real deal, though, this is it. By the way, in case you didn't know, Ben E. King "left" the group because the other members of the group failed to show up for a recording session and his product was released under his name only. Do you remember the name of it?

5 out of 5 stars All the Drifters hits from 1959 to 1965 - and much more.......2002-10-07

The Drifters were onne of those groups that went through a lot of line-up changes, so let's first clear up any confusion first. There was a group with that name before 1959 - it feautured Clyde McPhatter and recorded some wonderful R+B, some of which is available on other CD's. That group was disbanded, and a totally different group was given the Drifters name. It is that line-up, featuring Ben E King, that opens this collection (which is presented in chronological order). Ben left after Save the last dance for me to pursue a solo career. His solo hits are not included in this collection, which is why Spanish Harlem and Stand by me are missing. You can obtain these recordings on Ben's own albums, although I've also seen Drifters compilations which include Ben's solo hits.

So, what you get here are forty of the finest tracks from their best period, including Save the last dance for me, There goes my baby, Dance with me, On Broadway, Some kind of wonderful, One way love, Up on the roof, Under the boardwalk, Saturday night at the movies, When my little girl is smiling, Sweets for my sweet and others - all huge American hits. Only Save the last dance for me was a big hit in Britain for the Drifters, because record companies at that time often found local singers to cover the songs and they had the hits instead. This shameful practice died out by the end of the sixties.

Even with all their hits included, there is plenty of room to explore their B-sides and album tracks. All the ones included here are excellent, but my favorite is their cover of Stranger on the shore, an extremely sad song which which was a huge instrumental hit for clarinetist Acker Bilk. Many vocal versions of this song exist, but the Drifters sing it as well as anybody.

After 1965 (which marks the end of this compilation), the Drifters didn't have much success in America, but they enjoyed a new wave of popularity in the seventies in Britain, where they had several top ten hits. Even as a Brit, I prefer their sixties music, but anybody interested in their seventies music should seek out a British compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of timeless Pop & R&B songs.......2002-07-27

Together with Elvis Presley, Phil Spector's bands, The Everly Brothers, The Beatles, Dusty Springfield, The Beach Boys, some from Motown, Brenda Lee, The Rolling Stones or Tina Turner among others, The Drifters have also written their page in Rock'n'Roll history, a fact that I don't realise whether it has been some time acknowledged.

The legendary group recorded songs that are today timeless pop or R&B classics; Save The Last Dance For Me, Dance With Me, Sweets For My Sweet, Some Kind Of Wonderful, When My Little Girl is Smiling, On Broadway, my personal best favourites: Up On The Roof, At The Club, Under the Boardwalk, and This Magic Moment, are only some gems of their musical legacy. They have been covered by dozens of artists and they still continue to be covered by others.
The Drifters' choice of songs and songwriters were exemplary: Doc Pomus, Mort Shuman, Bacharach, Hilliard, David, Jerry Leiber, Mike Stoller, Bert Russell, Jerry Ragovoy, Goffin/King, Kenny Young, Barry Mann & Cynthia Weil, almost all the best of the 60s.

A must-have for those who love 60's music, for collectors and also for those who feel curious about all the richness and beauty the music of that time gave the world.

4 out of 5 stars Rock N Roll Is Here To Stay.......2007-04-10

Once again Sha Na Na has given a defining performance of old time rock & roll as well as some original material sounding of the era. Sha Na Na has evolved from a gimmick (Woodstock '68) to a true musical unit. The production is slick, the vocals tight & the music absolutely great !

5 out of 5 stars Cruiser Music.......2007-01-12

Looked a long time for this finally found it here, couldn't order it fast enough. Extremely satisfied, plays well either cruising down the road or just setting at car show's.

5 out of 5 stars SHA NA NA IS GREASED AND READY TO ROCK AND ROLL.......2006-06-07

ANY SHA NA NA ALBUM IS GOOD, AND BELIEVE ME I HAVE THEM ALL, BUT THIS ONE IS OUTSTANDING. YOU WILL LISTEN TO IT OVER AND OVER. I HOPE THEY FOLLOW THIS UP WITH A NEW LIVE RELEASE. THIS IS A MUST BUY. ROCK AND ROLL IS HERE TO STAY AND SHA NA NA PROVES IT. GET TO ONE OF THEIR LIVE SHOWS. WELL WORTH IT.

5 out of 5 stars Sha Na Na's best album period........2006-06-07

This is the first time they have ever done an all original album. The songs are great, the vocals are tight, and the production is outstanding. Don't miss this one.

      Album Description

ROIR is proud to release Martin Rev's self-titled solo debut album, originally released in 1979 on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label, now with 5 bonus tracks (3 unreleased & exclusive). Rev is best known for his confrontational work with Alan Vega as Suicide; considered one of the most influential bands of the last 30 years. This record, somewhere between the harsh sound of Rev's early work with Suicide and his more melodic, solo material ("See Me Ridin'"), is concrete evidence of how influential Rev's dirty American-motorik music really was.
All songs written & performed by Martin Rev. All compositions produced by Charles Ball & Martin Rev. Tracks 1-6 originally appeared on vinyl (Lust/Unlust Records 1980). Liner Notes by Steve Barker (The Wire UK).

      Album Description

2002 Reissue of 1980 release from Martin Rev of Suicide. Includes 5 bonus tracks 'Coal' & 'Marvel' and 3 never before releases '5 To 5', 'Wes' & 'Daydreams'. ROIR.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars Lust Unlust.......2005-05-03

Half of this release consists of extra tracks; tracks one through six comprise Rev's solo debut on Charles Ball's Lust/Unlust label. The rest were recorded quite some time afterward - - after his second solo release, CLOUDS OF GLORY, in fact. Guess you could say this is really Rev's first and third album. As these extra tracks were recorded with Ball, this is really a compilation of Rev's work with him. Not surprisingly, much of it sounds a lot like Suicide; the one vocal track reveals Rev to be a huskier version of his partner Alan Vega. But there's a lot of variety here - - from the melodic toybox of the opener, 'Mari', to the clanking soundscape of 'Nineteen 86' and pretty much everything between. 'Coal Train' matches 'Mari' in its subversive, dark catchiness while the doowop-tinged 'Daydreams' (think particularly The Clovers, 'Devil Or Angel') echoes some of Rev's Suicide work. And the lenghty 'Marvel' is waves on waves of synthetic melody washes that would not be out of place on a Krautrock sampler. Great, startling stuff.

1 out of 5 stars The Thieving "Artiste".......2003-02-23

I produced this album; all the selections from 1979 and 1991.
I am proud of my substantial contributions, but must insist you pass this edition by -- it is truly an inferior creation relying on unfinished cassette work tapes (not even early mixes, nor virtually finished takes of which there are many!)
I have not been paid for these (inferior) sessions and will probably never be. Rev has had ample opportunity to be honorable and has shown he is not. Forget this release and go buy yourself some Kraftwerk or such. Believe me, Martin Rev is such an egomaniac he has no compunctions ripping you, the customer, off. Truly a disgraceful performance and product!

      5 out of 5 stars Classic Cuts.......2003-01-13

Martin Rev(Suicide) is one of America's original electronic producers. This album is a re-issue of his debut solo album from 1980....if you can beleive that. This guy has influenced a wide range of artists like Cabaret Voltaire, the Orb, Depeche Mode, New Order, Colorform, etc. The difference between this album and other early electronic releases is that this album holds up to todays standards....in fact better than most new albums. The bonus cuts are excellent...especially Coal Train.

No one can deny that Dirty Dancing contained great music that really made you want get up and have some fun. This colledtion combines both soundtrack albums released (Dirty Dancing / More Dirty Dancing) with a few bonus tracks previously not available and a small booklet.

Of the bonus tracks, only the extended movie version of "Time Of My Life" is worth much intrest. It's a bit odd that the radio version isn't included as well, but it is nice to hear the full length song for once. The other bonus tracks are instrumental versions of "Time Of My Life" that are actually excerpts from the score instead of full length dubs. One runs 41 seconds, the other 58 seconds. My one real gripe with the set is that the total running time of both CD's is just about 75 minutes. That's just enough to fit on one disc and should have been done to save the consumer some money. Also it would've been nice to have the songs presented in the order they appeared in the film.

The discs are stored in the front and back flaps of a hard bound CD book with a 24 page booklet between them. The booklet has many stills from the film (most retouched through a colored filter) and a few behind the scenes shots as well. I would've liked to see a directors note or an overview of the "Dirty Dancing" phenomonon, but overall the packaging is done very well and only enhaces the feel of a special collectors item.

I've awarded four stars because there's just not enough offered for someone who already owns both soundtracks and is not a manic fan of the film like myself. There are minor things that could have been done (ie; putting all tracks on one disc in the films order of appearance, including both versions of "Time Of My Life") that would've made the "Collectors Edition" something really special. However this is the perfect set for those that don't already own both Dirty Dancing soundtracks. It's a great collection of music that makes great beach music and is sure to liven up parties or a bad day. If you don't have it yet, you MUST get it now.

"Dirty Dancing" is an okay movie, but the soundtrack is awesome! The songs "Be my Baby", "Hungry Eyes", and "She's like the Wind" are my favorites. They are great to listen to if you're having a bad day. If you want to buy a great CD, I recommend buying this one. It's fabulous!

      5 out of 5 stars Songbird2000.......2000-08-23

This is definitely the ultimate cd. It is my best purchase to date. The combination of music is immaculate. My favourites are "Some Kinda Wonderful", "Cry to Me" and "Yes". This music rocks the soul. You just gotta to sing and dance when its playing. For those of you in love, looking for love or just love the great music of the 80's this is the cd for you. I have an eight year old niece that just loves this collection. I have the words to each song printed and boy you should hear us sing. So just sit back and allow the music to flow.

5 out of 5 stars The best movie with the best soundtrack!.......1999-12-09

Dirty Dancing is my all time favorite movie. It has been my inspiration for dancing and acting, ever since I was a little girl. I still enjoy watching the movie, and singing and dancing along with the characters and the songs. This would be a great gift, for anyone you know, who enjoys the movie, and it's songs.
