5 out of 5 stars Pete Byrne Doing What He Does Best!.......2006-10-14

This is a very good pop record that is influenced by synths and clever studio skills. It's fun to listen to and reminds me of what I like about music that is meant to entertain because it does just that--entertain. If you liked Naked Eyes or A Flock of Seagulls or Duran Duran or 80's music, then you'll like this too. It's not dated but rather it is influenced by Pete's time in Naked Eyes of the 80's. At the same time, there are musical themes that are more "grown up" than his earlier stuff.

To those that really criticized Pete in previous reviews I say that your opinion is just that and no more. My opinion is equally valid and as someone who recently saw Pete in concert I can honestly say the guy is a genuinely good performer and worth listening to either live or on record.

1 out of 5 stars Why Pete Byrne is not Madonna.......2005-11-15

Rob Fisher (now, sadly, deceased) wrote most of the music for Naked Eyes. The two were a real team. Fisher later went on to collaborate with other top groups and write songs. Byrne is a competent singer and now is touring with a back-up band doing the old Naked Eyes tunes.
Madonna has a great album out, "Confessions on a Dance Floor" and has been consistently recording new material for years. Naked Eyes has just been re-issuing stuff from 1983-84 for 20 years, fair enough.

This is Byrne's "solo" album, with a disco cover of Paint it Black and some very bad songs like the Manilowesque "Concrete and Clay ." The song "Real Illusion" rips off Sheryl Crow's "A Change Can Do You Good" and is Byrne's attempt at rap music. Why Madonna (who Byrne rather dismisses in an interview with [...]) is an international superstar and legend and people are "just re-discovering" Pete Byrne has something to do with marketing, yes, but also effort and creativity. He is reputed to be doing an "acoustic cover album," always a last resort when an artist doesn't know what else to try.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good, a few songs sound like Barry Manilow.......2005-11-04

I think there are about 5 fans on the planet for this music. Why make a 1980s synth-pop album in the 21st century? It seems Byrne is floundering for an identity here. "Paint it Black" is messy, but could work for disco clubs. Everything else is pastiche.

4 out of 5 stars Naked Eyes Front Man is back! This is NO Illusion!.......2004-06-05

Pete Byrne returned with this, his first solo CD, since those forever classic Naked Eyes recordings. In the pantheon of 80s pop music, FUEL FOR THE FIRE and NAKED EYES, rank high and untouchable on the totem pole. That said, after the lengthy hiatus of over a decade Byrne re-arrived back on a changed, new world. My ears had high expectations. I must admit, upon first listening I thought Byrne's voice sounded different and it has matured and aged. But, THE REAL ILLUSION pays off. I re-discovered the joy of Byrne's music and placed the disc in heavy rotation and very gradually the music became a classic for me in its own right. I'M A BELIEVER and many more offer infectious synth grooves and clearly Byrne hasn't lost his touch. Put simply, Byrne's task of being held up in the mirror to those classics built by he and late partner, Rob Fisher, is unenviable. That said, this is a solid, worthy return and I hope it won't be Byrne's last. Furthermore, check out EVERYTHING AND MORE by Naked Eyes released in 2002 for a taste of classic Naked Eyes [the third and lost installment of the Naked Eyes years].
