A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

I Put Out an All Points Bulletin on this CD.......2006-08-17

I'm still amazed by how the former radio station 92.7 FM WLIR from Long Island, NY was the life soundtrack to so many!!! It was like a rite of passage for many of us in the tri-state area. They played "new music first" and I was privy to so many groups that mainstream stations wouldn't touch. One of these bands was the Scottish funk masters APB. The summer of 1982 started my love affair with this orginal, danceable music. It was feel good-have fun-funky music.
I was feeling nostalgic last year and wanted to recapture that feeling of listening to APB's great songs, when I saw the CD was USED and expensively priced on Amazon so I started searching up APB to see what they were up to. Lo and behold, I found that it was going to be rereleased.
I love Iain Slater's haunting voice and funky bass!! I was hooked on "Shoot You Down" the first time I heard it. "Rainy Day" is an anthemic song complaining about(what else?)a rainy day that never seems to end. "One Day" and "Talk to Me" sound as good today as they did then. Actually, not a bad song on the CD!
I love the live performances. I remember the days of hanging at Malibu in Lido Beach. You need to get this CD and funk your butt off!!
For all of you who miss the late great WLIR,it is back on a different frequency of 107.1 FM on the east end of Long Island and online at www.wlir.com. Every week day at 12:00pm EST is the Flashback Lunch. And yes, they do take requests and they do play APB!! I live in Florida now but still get to hear the station on the internet!

Miracles do happen -- the ghosts materialize!.......2006-02-22

Rewind to just over a year ago. The receiver I had owned since college had just finally crapped out (after 22 years!), and for a brief spell, the only place I could play music was on my computer. I was starting to miss playing some of my old '80s records -- like APB, the tightly wound Scottish punk/funk band who broke up in 1990, who were madly popular among the alternative/college radio crowd in the New York Tri-State area in the day. (I lived in Connecticut and was in college on Long Island when WLIR radio broke them big in '82.)
In that spirit, I came here to Amazon looking for a CD copy of "Something to Believe In," Link Records' collection of the band's early singles -- and was appalled to see that the cheapest the out-of-print disc was going for was $100, and one copy was posted for $300. In a way, though, I was happy -- it was an affirmation of just how good the band was and how their music held up. Still, I wasn't paying $100 for songs I already had on vinyl. And the one act most conspicuously absent from '80s compilation discs was still elusive to an audience who didn't know what they were missing.
So imagine my joy when the news came out in January -- miracle of miracles! -- that a New York indie label, Young American, was re-releasing "Something to Believe In" as a 2-CD set, to be followed by a John Peel sessions CD and the re-release of their only studio album, 1985's "Cure for the Blues."
If you've waited this long for the disc at a reasonable price, your patience has been rewarded.
The joys can be found in the simple reasons CDs came into existence in the first place -- to be able to enjoy music without the pops and scratches, the convenience of not having to turn over records ... and the sound quality. The sound quality! I'd swear I was in in the middle of Wilf Smarties' studio as the trio (well, originally and in the end a trio, with some other folks in between) poured on the kerosene. On Disc 1 -- the very disc some people were paying three figures for -- every nimble bass run and every Scottish wail by Iain Slater, every attack of the high-hat by George Cheyne, every sharp guitar snipe by Glenn Roberts is incredibly pronounced. That the songs stand up is no surprise: the tribal chant and instrumental bodyslam of "Rainy Day," the hyperactivity of "Shoot You Down" and "Help Yourself," the dance-club cool of "One Day" and "Danceability," the all-out passion of "Summer Love." But all of them sound much more glorious now than then. And in the era of hyper bass and stereos on wheels, maybe "All Your Life With Me," an instrumental B-side back then, will get the attention it deserves.
The second disc is just for giggles and curiosity, a throwaway, really -- a bunch of live tracks from Hofstra University and Club Malibu on Long Island, with sound quality that a Scot would call dodgy at best, plus one strong B-side ("Crazy Grey") and a few previously unreleased tracks that didn't pass muster then (and still don't). I would've liked to have seen the second disc used to re-release some more single sides ("When I Feel This Way," "Funk Invective"), but maybe they'll show up as bonus filler on the next releases.
Really, the reason for buying this collection is to have a pristine copy of that essential first disc without spending a mint. But in the end, it's much better than that. Listening to this is like finding out that the sweet girl you had a crush on in college 20 years back is still a knockout ... and she's available ...

Pleasing blend of country, rock and alternapop.......2006-01-23

This Austin-based band's first release for Compadre (their third studio effort overall) finds a sweet spot between alt.country and alt.pop. With both roots and rock influences drawn from outside the mainstream, one is hesitant to saddle this with a "country-rock" tag on the off-chance it would indicate made-palatable-for-mainstream-radio crossover. But highly palatable it is, with plenty of first-spin melodic ear-appeal that should garner a fair share of Americana and college radio spins. The band's country basics reside more in the songs' folksy-directness than overt twang, with electric guitars on the mid-tempo numbers that range into propulsive power-pop. The album's ballads are mixed with alternapop, netting out to equal parts Connells, Replacements, Delevantes, and REM -- a mix that's apparently what singer/songwriter/guitarist Fred Andrews has long had in mind. Andrews' songs exhibit a streak of spiritual faith, including the messianic images of "Something to Believe In" and belief of "I'm Here." Snapshots of roadside flower sellers ("8 Roses") and high school nights of summer abandon ("Never Forget You") are nice additions to more typical songs of relationships that have been torn-up, traded-in, and on occasion, revived. The protective "This Time" and "Tonight" close the album with the sort of optimism that rolls winningly throughout this album. [©2006 redtunictroll at hotmail dot com]

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25

I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously.There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.

Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02

I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.

Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.

The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.

I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.

Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18

I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.

COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30

Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.

The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

This bargain collection of showtunes is highlighted by the composition of Kurt Weill and the uniquely rolling tongue of Colette Lyons. I have a complaint about this compilation. It includes "Ol' Man River", but it excludes Al Jolson's rendition of "Ol' Man River." Otherwise, this collection gives you ample bang for your buck.

Two Underrated Curtis Gems.......2005-07-29

It is my experience that when discussing the genious of Curtis Mayfield, most people tend to refer only to his work during the highly praised early to mid-70's era. I was very much the same way myself until a compilation album opened up my eyes for his later material, especially that which can be found on this two disc compilation.

Released in 1979 and 1980, Heartbeat and Something to Believe In shows a Curtis fully able to master the slick and groovy sounds of the pre-disco era without comprimising his trademark soulful voice and wonderful melodies.

Tracks such as "Never Stop Loving Me", "You're So Good To Me" or "Trippin' Out" (later covered by Camp Lo on their hit Black Nostaljack) are all masterpieces of sexy, groovy late 70:s soul.

I have listened to quite a lot of late seventies soul and it is my opinion that Curtis' contributions from theese two albums are no less than state of the art classics.

The opening number on this CD "I'm In Love Again" is an uptempo scintillating number!!

Carmen's vocal of "Windmills of Your Mind" is VERY fine indeed. This song includes an instrumental arrangement of brilliant artistic overtones which highlights Regina Carter on violin.

"Happiness Is" is one of the ultimate lyrical love songs. Carmen's soothing vocal comforts the soul like soft candlelight.

Carmen's interpretation of "I Loves You Porgy" is full of mellow yet rich textures.

"Vu Ja De" is an original work that only Carmen's artistic genius could conceive. It is jazzy, sexy, and totally cool!! You can also hear it on her website's home page. This song also is wonderful to experience in her live concerts. Don't miss Carmen's concert dvd Live at the Madrid Theatre to experience one of the greatest jazz divas ever!

"A Gift of Love" is a message of instilling nurturing to the innocents. This song has subtle instrumental complexities which are fascinating.

This cd is a wonderful mix of jazz, ballads, and pop songs from one of the finest contemporary musical talents!

Carmen Lundy is like so many fabulous jazz singers that the title covers. She is FABULOUS. What makes her stand out even more is both her originality and song writing. "Somthing To Believe In" is such a beauftiful and unique song and truly a heartfelt lyric that you can only wish you could meet somen like her new love! This was the first cut that I heard from this special album. The rest of it just continues to show the joy and happiness Camren is currently experiencing in her life. not to bash the doc's...but this is the worst ive heard. I bought "Pocket Full of Kryptonite" on a whim, absolutely loved it, and bought this album just 20 minutes ago. simply awful...redundant, whiny, the vocals barely held a note. the only bearable song is sister sysiphus. If you like their sound, get pocket full of kryptonite.

Good Times, Good Music.......2004-06-28

Youve got to believe in something is the soundtrack to the happiest times in my life. I bought it when I was 15 years old back in 1996. It is such an optimistic happy record with much heart and soul. If wishes were horses, Bout A Train and I cant believe youre still with her are 3 really good tunes to go along with all the other wonderful music on this record. Spin Doctors are truly one of the most underated bands in a long time because for whatever reason only their first album(and some recognition for their sophmore record) was recognized. This album would definitely be in my pick for one of the top ten of the decade. I bought it in 96' and I still love it today.

Their Finest Work.......2001-01-10

The Spin Doctors are one of the most underrated bands of the past decade, and the commercial failure of this album is truly a crime. You've Got to Believe In Something recaptures in the momentum they had on Pocketful of Kryptonite, and in some cases, it even surpasses it. Unlike the second album (Turn It Upside Down --- a good one, but a little tired-sounded), this album is brimming with their familiar funk-rock-blues synthesis, and with energy and vigor. You've Got to Believe In Something is also the title of the opening tract. It's a bit different for the Spin Doctors, but it rocks, in fact, it even has a soulful sound to it. House has a lot of acoustic guitar in it in addition to the customary electric one, but it is a fun song that I would describe as I rock with a hip-hop influence. Dogs On A Doe is the albums one weak spot. It doesn't really fit on hear, and the doesn't sound all that great. I Can't Believe You're Still With Her is a pop song with excellent lyrics and a fun sound. She Used to Mine is the real treat on this CD though. It has everything --- a funky sound, great singing, a soulful chorus, and wonderful lyrics. It really, REALLY should have been a hit. She's Not You is slow, sad, and touching song. The next track, To Make Me Blue, is a marked contrast --- a very energetic rock song. 'Bout A Train is one of the best rock-blues songs you'll ever here. I can't do it justice ... you simply have to hear it for yourself. Where Angels Fear To Tread and If Wishes Were Horses are both very enjoyable pop songs, especially the latter (a bit goofy, but still great). Sister Sisyphus is a feast if you like funk-rock, like I do. Last but not least, there is the unlisted tract, a cover of That's The Way I Like It. It's obvious that the Spin Doctors had a lot of fun recording it, and I certainly have fun listening to it, although the part in the middle is ..... well, interesting (you'll see what I mean). On the whole, I was very impressed with both the music and Chris Barron's singing, and I think this is the band's strongest album lyrically. Also, it is just plain fun to listen too --- a good thing to pick you up when you're a bit blue --- upbeat, yet at the same time not overly perky or pop. People who turned away from this album don't know what they are missing.

Wonderful. . ........2000-08-05

I am an oddity, as far as Spin Doctors fans go. The first SD album I bought was Here Comes the Bride, which I bought on a whim because I had heard their songs "Two Princes" and "Little Miss Can't be Wrong" and thought that they were good. I enjoyed Here Comes the Bride a lot (even though they sounded quite a bit different than they did on those two singles, I had little idea of their history at that time) and wanted more of the Spin Doctors great instrumental expertise and wacky lyrics. I spent a few months hunting for PFOK (cuz I knew it was their most popular, and their first mass-released album) and finally found it in the back corner of a Sam Goody's (in the Tri-Cities of Washington) slowly gathering dust.

I was delighted by their old sound, and that album solidified me as a die-hard Spin fan. I just recently got this album (their third mass-released) and was again delighted by it. It sounds a bit different than PFOK, and a lot different from HCTB, but it is still vintige Spin Doctors, and again shows their evolution as artists.

This album, needless to say, is great. Check out the title track, for it's joyful chorus. And the sad love song that is "She's not You." It brings a singular tear to my eye. Also notable at "Sister Sisphyphus", and their hidden track "That's the Way (I like it)", (stick around for the kazozs bit at the end of the song, it's very funny).

I recommend this CD to anyone who likes the spin doctors (or their singles), anyone who likes cheerful, soulful, and a bit goofy songs, and anyone who likes good music.

Keep the chee up, y'all.

Why the heck did this album fail? Its a fun album only the Spin Doctors could pull off. The single (she used to be mine) is a little repetitive, but all the other songs are really strong. The docs should have released Sister Sysiphis as a single, thats the best song on the CD. its totally funky. House sounds a lot better live, but the bridge was really cool on this CD. Buy it! Its worth it!
