Customer Reviews:
Ella has never sounder better.......2003-12-31
This wonderful concert was recorded in June, 1972, just a few weeks after I saw Ella give one of the greatest concerts I have ever heard at Carnegie Hall. I came to the CDs with mush anticipation, also fear that she could not possible be as good as I remember her. Well, Ella is fantasic. Her interaction with the other famous musician is breathtaking. I have over 700 CDs and would rate this set in the top 10.
My choice of the best ever jazz recording.......2003-11-15
Personally rate this as my choice of the best jazz that I've ever heard. Do happen to like traditional type jazz more than bebop ('Chinese' music according to Louis Armstrong).
In My Humble Opinion (IMHO), some of the Ella Fitzgerald tracks border on the sublime.
Also, IMHO, Roy Eldridge's trumpet playing is fantastic.
Wonder why we hear so much of Louis Armstrong, Dizzy Guilliespe, Wynton Marsalis and not enough of Roy Eldridge, who I consider to be one of the best horn players of all time?
Good but Uneven music; Ditto for this reissue.......2002-01-19
This release is historically significant in that it began as a mail-order only multi-LP box set released by Norman Granz of a "Jazz at the Philharmonic" style concert. It inspired him to found Pablo Records and to sign Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Oscar Peterson, and other musicians featured herein. Granz then released an edited version of this concert, omitting a handful of performances, as a 3-LP set.
This 3-CD issue restores the tracks omitted from the 3-LP set. As it happens, the complete concert could have easily fit on 2 CD's, so this is not the most efficient issue. A quibble, to be sure -- but if you're looking at this issue, it's only because you're a collector and shelf space is likely at a premium.
This is to say: if you're not a collector, there are better CD's to seek out for Basie, Ella, and Oscar. (Ella sings the theme from "Sanford and Son" and Marvin Gaye's "What's Going On?" for heaven's sake. Wouldn't you rather hear her sing the Harold Arlen songbook?)
I for one am not a big fan of the JATP formula -- solo after solo, mostly solid but only rarely inspired -- it's fairly tedious listening, in my opinion. So while I'm a fan of Harry Edison, Roy Eldridge, Al Grey, Lockjaw Davis, Stan Getz, et al., I don't think they're heard to best advantage here.
But... if you're a completist, you have to have this. The sound quality is above average. The Basie band of 1972 is under-rated -- a solid rhythm section driven by Harold Jones at the drums, Jimmy Forrest and Al Grey both back in the band.

Santa Monica Concert - Bud and Travis.......2006-08-10
This album is a true gem! The artistic chemistry between Bud and Travis is a true rarity. Absolutely brilliant communication between the two to produce some of the most beautifully heart wrenching and humorous stories ever told through the medium of guitar and song. You can feel the magic and warmth of their interaction with the audience and you just know that those who came to listen to them left the auditorium changed by what they experienced. It's hard to believe that the album was recorded in 1960! I am amazed by this performance. I regard myself as extremely fortunate to have their album in my collection.
Album should have been remastered for CD release.......2006-03-28
I love this album and grew up listening to it on LP so my 2 star review has nothing to do with the music and everything to do with the remixing quality. While the LP occasionally sounds "muddy" or like the sound is coming through a long tunnel, the CD is universally muddy. The music and tweener chats are extremely low in volume and don't sound as good as the LP version. These flaws can be slightly corrected with an equalizer but I wonder why the CD manufacturer didn't correct this problem by remastering the album prior to releasing it on CD? As it is, I plan to remix the CD or digitize the LP and reburn a copy onto CD myself. While I highly recommend this album to anyone who loves folk music, I'd suggest getting an LP rather than purchasing this very poor sound quality CD.
The only other Bud & Travis CD I have is the _Latin_Album_ and this CD version of a studio-mixed LP sounds fine, I suspect it is only the live shows that will require remixing before CD release.
Santa Monica Concert Rip-Off!!!!!.......2005-06-11
The original Santa Monica Concert LP by Bud & Travis was/is a fabulous showcase for their talents. However, if you value your ears don't play this audio CD at any volume level above a whisper. This CD was "recorded" by rip-off artists". There are so many clicks and pops and gain riding that it is virtually unlistenable at any reasonable volume level.
If you like Bud & Travis buy the "Best of" CD or any of their LP's. Stay away from this recording, save yourself some bucks and a big disappointment.
Given the poor quality of the recording, I cannot believe that it is authorized.
The Next Best Thing To Being There..........2003-07-27
I was too young, not even in high school yet, and in the wrong place (the East) at the time this remarkable evening of music by Bud & Travis, at the height of their powers, was recorded, but this has to be folk music heaven at its best.
Even for one who wasn't there, for all those like myself who loved this group and its music, it gives chills...and then provides thrills as it did when it was originally released as separate vinyl offerings, one memorable double lp long ago entitled Bud and Travis In Concert, and a second album of more offerings from the Santa Monica concert of March, 1960 spurred by its predecessor's popularity, In Concert Volume 2. So on these two CD's are combined 6 vinyl sides' worth of music, so this is actually a pretty good deal for your money.
With the whole show now here from start to finish, and the recording(s) take on a new quality of intimacy for the sake of that authenticity. All the original between songs humor, patter and intro descriptions for the various songs (they did sing quite a variety of things indeed that night) is included here, and in separate tracks, so one can pretty them out if one just wants to listen to the performances (music) by themselves.
This concert recording was/is indispensable for lovers of the folk boom times of the late 50's/early 60's; this is real quality, and I don't know how to convey it, even by half. Bud and Travis were special talents, less commercial in their approach, and going for more steak and less sizzle, but very polished nevertheless. Theirs was a vibrant, and well-rounded act, most of all, which didn't stoop for greater popularity at a cost to art. Here they were loved and rewarded for staying close to their muses, and the audience responds heartily at the close of the songs, in their Southern California home base.
Adding to the Best of CD which came out over 4 years ago, now we have one more Bud and Travis CD. It is great to hear their live versions, their own arrangements and visions for songs like "Delia's Gone", "Raspberries, Strawberries" (a song which they found and translated from the French), "They Call The Wind Mariah" in a full high-energy but folk treatment, "Bonsoir Dame", "Suzanne, Every Night When The Sun Goes Down", "Cloudy Summer Afternoon", a noble version sung in Spanish of the great Mexican love song "Malaguena Salerosa", a firey "La Bamba" with real Latin feel, and a hilarious, mock-disputed version of "Sloop John B." near end of the concert, in which they send up the song and themselves and just about everything else.
This CD is like a great lost love back from the grave for folk-boom fans. It is worth the price, and the effort it will take to special order it here or elsewhere, before it becomes more widely available. There are nice extensive liner notes on developing the re-issue, including commentary from one of the pair still with us, Travis Edmonson (!).
One Thomas Straw, the webmaster for the Bud & Travis site, ..., tells me that if this sells well, then Folk Era may consider re-issuing the entire wonderful catalog of Bud & Travis. That would truly be a gift from Heaven.

David Bowie is his own special effect.......2006-05-09
The greatest strength of this recording is the fact that it is LIVE. One night. One continuous take. It's a testament to just how good this artist was (and is)and how his talent takes over the stage without resorting to recording tricks or artifice. It's easy to think of Bowie as an image maker, and easy to forget that he's a music maker. The Spiders prove themselves to be a white-hot, smokin' band too. This recording gives me pleasure every time I listen, and I always find something new.
Standing on the shoulder of giants.......2005-10-10
I have this on vinyl bootleg I acquired in the 1980's. If youngsters question why their elders claim Bowie is so influential they only have to listen to this. Apart from the duff take-off special effects noise bowie tries to conjure up in Space Oddity and the flat chorus on Five Years, this album blows away any other Bowie concert CD. The sound is incredible on the vinyl - I can't say for the CD edition as I have never heard it. I had the privelege of seeing Bowie on his STAGE tour in Sydney and was very disappointed by the concert album they released of that tour. I'm happy this 1972 performance has finally officially been released - but inexplicably it seems to have failed to make much of an impact- even with Bowie fans. Being there in 1972 must have been an incredible experience . As far as I'm concerned its the only Bowie album anyone needs to own!

A stunning representation of the Bowie experience
Sure the levels are off from time to time i.e. Jean Genie, but look at it as a whole entity, warts and all. He flubs lyrics in Suffragette City (which he did again just recently in Cleveland 2004), the mix can be questionable from time to time BUT IT'S 1972!! A stunning collection of songs and better than the original version of the Ziggy Sardust movie S/T. Mick Ronson proved he was the next guitar god. Crank it up!
Live versions of Bowie's first great band.......2003-03-06
I find this a beautiful CD, of a RADIO SHOW, that was broadcast at the end of Bowie's first american tour. At that point, the SPIDERS were fresh, the material wasnt played to the point of tired repetition. If you compare this Cd, to the soundtrack to the movie ZIGGY STARDUST AND THE SPIDERS FROM MARS, you become amazed at the difference in sound. For one thing, the playing here is tight, concise, and energetic. On the movie soundtrack, from the END of the spider's history, what you hear is sloppy, dull playing. If you want to hear EARLY Bowie live, and your time machine is broken, so you cant go back to hear it in person, then for now, this is the next best thing. IF you can find it, buy it.

Product Description
Jeremy Nicholas writes: “Phrases that chill the heart: ‘I want a volunteer from the audience.’ ‘Is this your car, sir?’ ‘Have we shown you our holiday snaps?’ Or how about “Tonight’s lecture is on the art of writing comedy.” Go to that seminar and one thing you know for sure in advance is that you are consigning yourself to an evening devoid of any humor. Dissecting comedy, analyzing jokes or, in this case, comic songs, has all the allure of pulling off the wings of a butterfly to see how it flies. Setting off writing a comic song is rather like being your own crossword compiler, designing the grid, filling in all the squares, setting your own clues. No, it’s not, really. It’s more like taking a pile of kid’s building bricks and making a spectacular skyscraper from them. No, that’s not it either. But there are elements of both that are pertinent (a good word for seminars).” In other words, comedy (and comic songwriting) is hard work. Think of the last time you told a joke and it didn’t come off. The material was right but maybe the delivery was off. But remember the joy when the response was perfect: not only did they laugh, but you sensed the anticipation: this is going to be funny. And for this album, the anticipation certainly pays off. Anyone who grew up in the 1950’s and 1960’s will recall the wonderful humor of the works of Tom Lehrer, the classic HMV (Angel in this country) LP’s of Michael Flanders and Donald Swann. More recently we’ve seen how Stephen Sondheim and William Bolcom can easily move back and forth between the serious and the humorous. And just to prove that comedy can be serious business, we have the participation of Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the most highly regarded concert and recital pianists as accompanist and composer, joined by his wife Jody Karin Applebaum. Her resume includes performances of Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and St. Matthew Passion, Handel’s Messiah, to contemporary works by Stephen Albert, Heitor Villa-Lobos and Gorecki. Together they have performed in New York, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Canada, England and the Middle East. Together they have recorded music of Britten, Schoenberg, Bolcom, Wolpe, Weill, Satie and Poulenc. Here both they and you have some fun for a change!

A Trancendental Sense of Humor!!!!!!.......2005-07-14
As an amateur pianist, I know how it is to play music of different styles for different occasions. I also have a slightly skewered sense of humor as well as a love of serious classical music. So on my shelves I have Dr. Demento as well as Mahler, Broadway Shows as well as Shostakovich. Marc-Andre Hamelin, one of the best pianist nowadays because he makes the most hardest piece of music sound easy, is married to Jody Karin Applebaum, a wonderful singer. They have recorded the Cabaret songs of Bolcom, Britten and Fredrich Hollaender and now turn their attention to comedy songs from many eras. Much of this repertoire is taken from Sarah Walker's Cd on Hyperion. Applebaum's diction is very clear and every song has a different mood and different voices and accents when needed. Comparisons between William Bolcom and Joan Morris are inevitable. Bolcom's "Lime Jello Marshmallow Cottage Cheese Surprise" is also included. The program notes are written by Jeremy Nicholas, who has provided us with very informative program notes for Hyperion CD's, and who has written some wonderful songs such as "Usherette's Blues" and "Place Settings". Tom Lehrer's classic "Masochism Tango" makes an appearance (which is also on one of Dr. Demento's greatest hits CD's).Hamelin's recordings and performances have one thing that many pianist's do not have-HUMOR (when it's needed, of course). Here, he gets to put it to good use, and you can tell that they're having fun. This is a live recording, so there is much laughing from the audience, and I wouldn't have it any other way. Hamelin keeps suprising me with his CD's and repertoire choices, and this is no exception. Let's have some more, please!!! (maybe Dave Frishberg, more Flanders and Swann?).

Album Description
Amid the continually changing musical landscape of American music, there has been one constant: the presence of the "singer/songwriter" - an artist who can tell a poignant story through his music with a distinct point of view. Little Dog Records artist Cisco carries on this great American tradition with his new album 7740 Valmont St. Cisco proves himself to be one of those rare artists who can interweave vivid, emotional "pictures" with distinctly melodic songs.
Customer Reviews:
Another notch on the Bakersfield Belt.......2005-04-28
Cisco is a great mixture of blues, gospel, and country a la Rod Stewart. Lost Broke or Sold is a fantastic song that catches the ear. If you like your rock and/or country music a little raw and honest, Cisco is your best bet. Bakersfield is country music's best kept secret.
Dylan lyrics/Rod Stewart vocals.......2004-10-26
7740 Valmont Street is an album that paints images with it's Dylan-esque lyrics. Cisco's vocals on this album remind one of a young Rod Stewart. The 10 song album is entirely original material and covers the range of love gone wrong and its aftermath in Lost, Broke or Sold to a Hank Williams feel to The Other Side. One of the most touching songs is Say a Prayer, which features the late Jeff Roberts on bass. Musicians playing on the album include Cisco, Pete Anderson & Skip Edwards. Pete Anderson was also the arranger and producer for this gem from Little Dog Records.
Wow, sooo good!.......2004-08-10
According to emusic.com, this is alternative country produced by Mike Ness (Social Distortion) that sounds traditional like Johnny cash, yet new, like Dwight Yokam. If that still leaves you guessing, I guess you'll have to buy the album or subscribe to emusic.com where you can download this album as well as one not available on this site.
Well, I love what I've heard from this guy so far, but I can't find anything about himm on the web, not even an official website. He needs better representation on Amazon and on the web in general.
Alt-country, or altogether nuts?.......2004-07-15
This guy should be better representated in this sites music area. There are many artists with this name, but this fellow is quite the piece of work. He's an outlaw roots rockin, Bakersfield/country crooner with more bad habits than a sociopathic stripper. Seriously though, he's not that bad of a guy. He's just a raw, and more importantly real alt-country dude who's reputation in and around the music world is rapidly gaining notoriety. His debut, "Pink Motel" was a classic right off the bat. This one, produced by the well-known Peter Anderson is a little more subdued, but just as effective. It just came out, and already it seems like it'll be tough to buy. If you can't pick it up here, just go to milesofmusic.com; they love him in California. Hopefully more folks will know about this Cisco in the near future. Unique to say the least.

Album Description
For those wondering what happened to the rock 'n roll part of "alt country," here's your answer. Ken Layne and the Corvids' debut CD is a boozey mix of crunching, rootsy rock with a few shots of honky-tonk heartbreak. If your idea of the perfect radio station mixed "Let It Bleed" with Johnny Cash and Merle Haggard, you'll be pleased with "Fought Down."

Glittery Goodness.......2004-11-18
Just listen to Glitter On a couple times. It's one of those melodies that doesn't sound so much invented as discovered, like a diamond underground, waiting to be unearthed. The rest of the album is nearly that good, even when the song lasts for like nine billion minutes (I Should Be That Guy). And Lincoln Town Car features this astonishing bit of lyric poetry, which manages to be vague, explicit, lurid, and almost innocent, all at the same time: "Your tongue was sweet / You legs were strong / I'm wasted out my head." This is music for people who like songs, singing, guitars, and drums.
Playing at alt-country.......2004-09-05
Sorry but I didn't like this album very much.
Comparing them to real talents like Neil Young, Waylon Jennings, Warren Zevon and the Stones is really laughable but since everyone else seems to do it in their reviews I will say that the band is fronted by someone who goes back and forth TRYING HARD to sound like alternatively Paul Westerberg and Mick Jagger backed by a competent band of hobbyists.
Smokin', whiskey drinkin' songs.......2004-06-22
"Fought Down" and "I Should Be That Guy" are two of the best songs I've ever heard.
Settle back with a glass of Jack Daniel's and enjoy.
great stuff.......2004-03-01
Forget labels. Forget "alt-country", forget categories. Forget the idea that this is a "vanity project", whatever the hell that means.
This CD rocks. Really. Turn the stereo to LOUD and hit the repeat button; this music is that good.
Got it on random play with Stones, Petty, REM and Haggard.......2004-02-24
I don't know where the "country" description comes in, since this is more a combination of late-60s Stonesish country (Exile on Main St., as noted) and some 80s basic rock (like REM's first couple albums). Now, if they had used a Telecaster with less distortion, maybe I'd say "country" ....
Great barroom rock without any pretense. Sounds like it was recorded the old way, with everyone just playing at once. This is a real tight band, though -- no keyboards or effects, just a solid set-up of electric and acoustic guitars, drums, etc. Everyone is dead on, and Layne's vocals are excellent -- Jagger crossed with some honkytonk country singers, and the guitar is something between Keith Richards and probably a bunch of influential bands I'm too naive to know about.
I really like this album, and I already knew of these guys as bloggers and writers (the founders of Prognosis) and members of other bands (Tsar?), but I'm astounded at how a few people can be so talented.
I always pop a beer when I listen to this one, which is pretty often. Ought to be even better live.
My only small gripe: "I Should Be That Guy" is a little too generic. And why isn't "Monkey Cup" included here? And why hasn't Amazon put up some song samples?

David Bowie - 'Santa Monica '72' (Griffin).......2005-03-22
An absolute must-have for every true Bowie fan.I finally got to see David play live nearly a year ago and one thing I'll say about a David Bowie concert, the man simply takes you into his own world for over two hours.A must-be there event! The shindig on this disc took place on October 20,1972.Total of eighteen cuts and a duration of 76:39.Thank goodness for the invention of compact discs,no doubt.I remember years ago when the only source of an early '70's Bowie concert was some pricey lousy sounding bootleg put on 2-lp vinyl. Now,the fan gets the entire show one shiny disc.Great matching art work to go with it.Tunes I couldn't get enough of were "Ziggy Stardust","The Superman","Space Oddity","John,I'm Only Dancing","Jene Genie","Suffragette City" and "Rock&Roll Suicide".One of the better archive concerts EVER to be released, period!
actually 4.78 stars.......2004-01-11
OK folks-- remember this is 1972-- this is a live radio broadcast-- they are mixing on the fly
Impudent, stylish, and appealing.......2004-09-14
Santa Monica
This CD by Ric Seaberg is a treat. I discover an artist who is completely new to me and I wonder how come I haven't heard his music before. Where have I been?
There is the somewhat off-putting caveat for the on-line listing that I read: "Explicit Lyrics." But there is really nothing offensive about the words. They are clever. At times they are sad. And yes, they are edgy. But they are at times gentle and inspiring.
Not being an expert, I couldn't characterize the genre of this music. It seems, like lots of good music, to ride a wave over several different types. Sometimes the music seems much too "hip" for the day-to-day lyrics. Can it be so groovy to take out the garbage? (I don't know what the current adverb for "groovy" is, so don't yell at me.)
About "The Bichon Song:" we have one of these special little white dogs, so I was wandering around the house singing, "We need a BEE-shawn free-ZAY on the motorway," and my husband lifted an eyebrow and said, "Oh, that'll top the charts for sure." Fortunately Seaberg sings it a lot better than I do.
When I was growing up, my father used to say, "Turn that music down!" But in our day stereo was state of the art. Today we have multi-track decibel heaven, so I am not a connoisseur of this engagingly twangy high-tech guitar (we were strictly unplugged), but I hear it as sassy and a tour de force.
I like it.
