Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic 1980!.......2005-04-12

Loved that year and this album really reflects it. When David Bowie brought out his "Space Oddity" in 1969, we never expected its sequel in 1980. And that video kick started the New Romantic era. And then there was the experimental and highly wonderful Cure, and who could forget getting down on the floor (literally) to Oops Upside Your Head? Classic year, classic album.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT YEAR FOR THE MUSIC!.......2003-09-05

There are classics galore on this 1980 UK hits compilation, like Queen's funky Another One Bites The Dust, David Bowie's poignant Ashes To Ashes (a sequel to his Space Oddity hit from the 1970s), Games Without Frontiers by Peter Gabriel, A Forest by The Cure, Too Much Too Young by The Special A.K.A., Funkytown, a minimalist masterpiece of dance by Lipps Inc., Babooshka by Kate Bush and Celebration by Kool And The Gang. From rock to funk, ska to alternative, soul to dance, this album impresses with its rich variety of styles. The best singer-songwriter stuff includes Joe Jackson's It's Different For Girls, Crying by Don McLean and the Peter Gabriel song. Great rock moments are The Cure's Forest, The Jam's Going Underground, Motorhead's Ace Of Spades and Dexy's Midnight Runners' Geno, a soulful R&B number. Tracks that moved feet on the dancefloors include Diana Ross' Upside Down, Jermaine Jackson's Let's Get Serious, Funkytown, Oops Upside Your Head and Please Don't Go. My favourites include Elvis Costello's I Can't Stand Up, Squeeze's charming country-ish song Another Nail In My Heart, To Cut A Long Story Short by the New Romantic band Spandau Ballet and OMD's brilliant synthpop track Enola Gay. This is prime nostalgia for those who remember the music and will be a delightful discovery to those who were too young or not yet born in 1980.

3 out of 5 stars cool.......2000-06-26

i really like how i can listen to all my old favorite songs on one cd, instead of a cassette!

4 out of 5 stars A great starter kit for beginners.......1999-12-29

If your just starting a CD collection, I highly recommend these double CDs from England. You get to skim the Greatest Hits of Bowie, Queen, U2, Duran Duran, Culture Club, Roxy Music and dozens more. But if you've been buying music for a while, these CD's are a disappointment, skipping many of the more obscure one-hit wonders for superstars.

As you might note, American acts are largely ignored in this (and many other in "The Millennium Edition" series) although there is a touch of Motown included.

But rest assured, the tracks listed are the full-length editions of the singles by the original artists. If you lost your record collection in a fire, this is a good place to start building.
