4 out of 5 stars Best of the Yellowjackets.......2005-06-10

I'm in awe of the talent of the Rochester Yellowjackets, one of the sharpest college-age acappella groups around. This was a particularly good era for them too, everything was coming together and they were cooking on all fronts. You had the long-breath hand held chords that seem to last for eternity, and you had the background voices imitating the strum and pluck of various instruments. What's great about the Yellowjackets is their smooth blend of old time trad jazz standards ("Birdland," "That Cat Is High," "Tuxedo Junction") with doo-wop 1950s style singalongs and then, the more adventurous modern day stuff which proves they haven't yet given up on MTV. So on this LP, we first hear the blast of Guster's famous tune BARREL OF A GUN with its eerie lyrics, "I know a movie star, I've got her plastered to my wall."

They look sharp in their yellow jackets, always clean and neat, but with an edge. Their press release says that they're the "sexy" yellow jackets and I'll second that emotion. On this LP, two of the tracks are originals, which also shows an independent edge. I don't like the Back Street Boys and James Taylor numbers, it feels like these are the tunes that boys like to sing but there isn't really anything going on underneath. Since the release of DARWIN'S GAMBIT the group has seen further success but were weakened I think by losing the glorious voices of this 2002 edition. Times change, and the Rochester Yellowjackets change with them, but sometimes, change isn't necessarily for the better.

This LP represents a true maturity for the acappella group, once so vibrant and naive on something like YELLACAPELLA, and now, in the days of FOURTEEN, a little over the hill. Maybe they should regroup and try a whole album of originals. How many times can we hear "Dust in the Wind" and "Ventura Highway" without gagging?
