About the Artist
The University of Rochester Yellowjackets, based in Rochester, NY are one of the nations oldest surviving collegiate a-cappella groups. Founded in 1956 they've been bringing fantastic music to people all over the country and world.
Product Description
The eleventh CD release from the University of Rochester Yellowjackets - an all-male collegiate a-cappella group, based in Rochester, NY. This album features eight covers, and two original songs: Big Universe, written and sung by Will Jennings '01 & Ashland Place, written and sung by Ben Jacoby '01. The thirteen members featured on this album come from many different backgrounds, but share one goal - to take collegiate a-cappella to a whole new level.
They look sharp in their yellow jackets, always clean and neat, but with an edge. Their press release says that they're the "sexy" yellow jackets and I'll second that emotion. On this LP, two of the tracks are originals, which also shows an independent edge. I don't like the Back Street Boys and James Taylor numbers, it feels like these are the tunes that boys like to sing but there isn't really anything going on underneath. Since the release of DARWIN'S GAMBIT the group has seen further success but were weakened I think by losing the glorious voices of this 2002 edition. Times change, and the Rochester Yellowjackets change with them, but sometimes, change isn't necessarily for the better.
This LP represents a true maturity for the acappella group, once so vibrant and naive on something like YELLACAPELLA, and now, in the days of FOURTEEN, a little over the hill. Maybe they should regroup and try a whole album of originals. How many times can we hear "Dust in the Wind" and "Ventura Highway" without gagging?
