5 out of 5 stars 25 Years of Great Bluegrass.......2004-07-14

Doyle Lawson shares 25 years of music in "A School of Bluegrass". This is a unique recording. This 2 disc CD set contains 50 songs. The more I listen to this recording, the more I like it. Be warned, this is not studio quality music. These songs were taken from rehearsal tapes and tapes of live recordings. What you get (Doyle Lawson fans)are many songs that have never been released. If you can get past the quality of the recording, you will find this set to be very entertaining and even surprising.

5 out of 5 stars This bluegrass with vigor is a mighty fine treat.......2004-06-09

Fifty songs on Doyle Lawson & Quicksilver's two CD set, "A School of Bluegrass" is a must-have for every serious bluegrass fan. Interestingly, all cuts were pulled from home rehearsal and live performance tapes that Doyle Lawson had collected over the years. So don't expect perfect studio quality sound, but instead focus on the tightness, depth, passion and vitality that his bands represented. The Kingsport, Tn. native originally formed Quicksilver in 1979, and this release is an historical compilation of 25 years of exceptional bluegrass and gospel music. It just so happens that Doyle also turned the big 6-0 in 2004.
Known as one of the best mandolin players and band leaders in bluegrass, he actually started his professional career as a banjo player (replacing J.D. Crowe in Jimmy Martin's band in 1963).

Over the years since Quicksilver formed, there have been thirteen configurations of Lawson's band, and each and every one has always maintained the very high caliber of music that they have become known for. Some of Lawson's "school of bluegrass" members have included Shawn Lane, Lou Reid, Terry Baucom, Brad Campbell, Shelton Feazell, Mike Hartgrove, Jim Mills, Dale Perry, Scott Vestal, Ray Deaton, Randy Graham, Jimmy Haley, Barry Scott, John Berry, Jr, Curtis Vestal, Steve Gulley, Barry Abernathy, Doug Bartlett, Jimmy VanCleve, Russell Moore, and Hunter Berry.

They received a gold record representing a million dollars in sales for "Rock My Soul," their first all-gospel album. In 1998, they were the first bluegrass band invited to perform at the National Gospel Quartet Convention in Louisville, Kentucky. Some of their other awards have included the 2000 IBMA Gospel Recorded Performance of the Year ("Winding Through Life") and the 2001 and 2002 IBMA Vocal Group of the Year Awards.

These are some of their more recent accomplishments, but one mustn't lose sight of their early achievements too. One must only listen to a few minutes of Terry Baucom, Jimmy Haley and Doyle Lawson sharing breaks on "Train `45" to understand the power, fervor and intensity with which they approached their craft. This bluegrass with vigor is a mighty fine treat that will allow us all to participate in the silver anniversary of this group. Lawson wanted to do something special for the fans, and we're sure lucky. (Joe Ross, staff writer, Bluegrass Now)

5 out of 5 stars These Guys Are The Best.......2001-09-03

As always, the Statlers have produced a beautiful, inspirational and an album that says what these men stand for - wholesomeness, love, talent and greatest of all Christianity. Each album just gets better and better. They should be so proud to be able to sing about what they believe in and have their songs so widely appreciated. Kudos to all four - the Statlers are the BEST.

5 out of 5 stars Statlers Music Is Awesome.......2001-06-29

The Statlers Do another Great Cd and it is a Must for all Statler Fans, the songs are all great and the talents of Harold and don and phil and jimmy shine. I love the music and it is pure Statler Music. Can't wait for the Next Cd

4 out of 5 stars A good album with good songs, but not their best........2001-06-27

The Statler Brother's latest album is not one for the normal Statler fan to leave sitting on the shelves. It is a great album with a good selection of songs. Only one problem, though. There are hardly any of the very unique songs that have made the Statlers famous. Songs that echo the style and lyrics of "Do You Remember These," "Chet, You're the Reason," "Maple Street Memories," and "Child of the Fifties." There are just mainly your typical, average country love songs or cheating songs and of course, the traditional gospel songs that appear on every Statler album. Not that that's bad, however. The Statlers of course always give a special delivery to every song that they record. Overall, this is still a fabulous country album, but as far as the Statlers are concerned it's missing some of that special, nostalgic-like songwriting that has made them famous.

5 out of 5 stars The Statler Brothers Rule!.......2001-06-10

The music on this CD is excellent! It shows what talented writers they are!! Don's writing does not get the recognition that he so deserves! Don is an excellent writer which this CD proves with each song! I know I sound prejudice but I promise what I'm hearing on this CD is their voices just get better and better! They are a legend and deserve all the awards they can get!! This CD IS a must for any Statler Brothers fan!! They Rule!!

5 out of 5 stars The Statlers do it again..........2001-05-18

Outstanding effort from one of the founding groups of country music. Well written songs from throughout the family, to include their sons who are the group "Grandstaff". Don's vocals continue to lead the Statlers through song after song that brings back nostalgia and pleasant memories that make you want to just sit back and "listen". Jimmy's tenor, Phil's 2nd Tenor, and of course, Harold's completely sufficient bass continue to blend in traditional Statler fashion...perfectly. Outstanding tributes to the Savior, as with every album so far. A must have for any traditional country fan, much less a Statler Brothers fan. Truly merits much more publicity than it has received, but then, again, the Statlers were never in it for the money, just for the fans. This album sits on the top of my favorites! Hopefully many more to come from the Statlers.

There's a stereotype about the Delta blues. You know the one: some guy sitting on a back porch somewhere, or maybe in a boxcar, with his guitar, singing about some woman who left him. But real Delta blues is far more flexible, creative, and, above all, spooky than that. It takes someone who learned from the style's master--that would be Robert Johnson, in case you're wondering--to explore the music's length and breadth, and that someone is Robert Lockwood Jr. That's why, even though he covers some of the hoariest chestnuts the Delta blues has to offer--yep, there's "Dust My Broom," and yep, there's "Love in Vain," and "Ramblin' on My Mind," not to mention Lightnin' Hopkins's "C.C. Rider," which has been covered by just about everyone who can sling an acoustic guitar--Lockwood keeps the music fresh and appealing. There's no question that he's good at what he does; he's won a W.C. Handy award, been nominated for a Grammy, and remained one of the most respected bluesmen around for decades. It would be hard to select a more clichéd title for a Delta blues album than Delta Crossroads--Lockwood does not, by the way, cover "Crossroad Blues" on this album, but that's fine; he's earned the right. --Genevieve Williams

How inspiring is it that Mr. Lockwood is touring and playing kick-a** blues at age 90? Ninety? Are you kidding? This is a great record, it is like hearing a great from the '20s or 30's play his stuff on modern recording equipment. I am very glad that I stumbled on this record and this artist. Blues on, Young Man!

    5 out of 5 stars Delta Lockwood.......2004-02-02

This cd is an essential Lockwood album. It includes all the great guitar singles and no-one plays a Twelve string Better than Robert Lockwood Jr.

    The KING OF BLUES

5 out of 5 stars The King of the Twelve String.......2001-04-27

Robert Lockwood plays a mean 12-string guitar. This album showcases Robert alone with his acoustic 12-string and is a reminder of the power of the song. Robert's voice and guitar ring so loud and clear, it's a pleasure to listen to this disc full of old blues standards and Lockwood originals. Lockwood is an underappreciated blues master. He will probably always live in the shadow of his mentor, Robert Johnson...but he deserves to be honored as a blues original in his own right. The clear and crisp production and sound on this disc only help to make these blues standards sound better than ever. I bought this disc to get some inspiration as an acoustic blues guitar player, and Lockwood's 12-string playing has blown me away! I can only hope to play half as good as Lockwood some day. Great stuff!

5 out of 5 stars He just gets better with age........2001-02-06

At the time or writing, B.B.& Eric are up for a Grammy for "traditional Blues", but in all fairness, they can`t hold a candle to this 85 year-old gent`s latest release! It is Delta Blues as it supposed to be played, and once again shows just how magical the 12-string acoustic guitar can sound when played in this genre. Suffice to say that,if you love the Blues, then buy this album. Mr.Lockwood Jr.can still show the young`uns a thing or two!

    5 out of 5 stars So Good!.......2000-11-07

An updated but authentic blues recording. If you love the blues and are sometimes frustrated by the quality of the old recordings, you'll love this disc. Robert Lockwood, Jr. is a blues master who shows it's possible to reinterpret old standards while remaining true to the blues form. I can't recommend this disc highly enough!

Coolest thing on this cd is that it gives SO MUCH heart for the bucks. The song 'END OF TIME', my personal fave, is A+ Serious CLASSIC! YOU MUST hear the musicianship on this disk! Written at a time in James life when he underwent great personal sorrow you really get a picture on how to overcome and conquer hardship and move on in life. TRULY INSPIRING and a GREAT GIFT CD. The only reason I'd skip giving it 8-10 stars is the homegrown feel on the production - which, after all the great HEAVY DUTY PRODUCTION work on his other SOLO CD "CRUEL WORLD" left me wanting just a little bit more. However the writing is beyond grammy on a couple of these tunes so who cares! Check it out!
