Elton John doesn't seem like a natural choice to write for a Disney musical, but he rose to the task on The Lion King, transcending his usual penchant for the softest of soft rock. Sir Elton's collaboration with Tim Rice (former writing partner of Andrew Lloyd Webber) helps connect the soundtrack to the theatrical lineage of all Disney musicals--so much so that, like Beauty and the Beast, The Lion King was eventually adapted for Broadway. Undistinguished songs like "Can You Feel the Love Tonight?" are far outnumbered by stirring, stately tunes that lent the film so much of its sense of pageant and play. --John SanchezCustomer Reviews:
fun but flawed.......2007-05-07
first off there's hans zimmer's score. his score is both powerful and moving. it brilliantly incorperates elements of local african music (provided and arranged by lebo m) these elements give it a great feeling of belonging not only to the film but to it's setting. without these tribal elements the score would have been far less compeling. one small problem is when the score abandons these elementsl; they're not carried through in all of the music. but its not enough to be a real distraction. the power of the score allows the listener to feel the wildabeast charging or smell the rain falling during the monsoon or experience the brilliance of the circle of life.
SCORE 5 out of 5
the songs had music by elton john and lyrics by tim rice. the following is a song-by-song breakdown.
THE CIRCLE OF LIFE - this is a great opening number with powerful vocals provided by carmen twillie and impressive african-inspired vocals in the beggining by lebo m. with the actual film, this is not only a moving but inspiring piece of cinema. even without, this is a great song that still gives me goose-bumps. this definately warranted its oscar nomination
5 out of 5
I JUST CAN'T WAIT TO BE KING - this is a really fun song by simba and nala along with zazu. its infectious beat and lyrics definately leave u humming. this may not be the most memorable song, but it definately captures the youth and innocence of simba at this point
5 out of 5
BE PREPARED - this is scar's big number so to speak. it features the hyenas in a very dark yet memorable song. the rhaspy vocals and wonderful musical arrangements make this a great piece that is both eery and impressive.
5 out of 5
HAKUNA MATATA - this is the second oscar nominated song, and although its fun buddy type number, it does get old and doesnt really age as well as the rest. this is honostly one of the weakest songs, believe it or not, its good but just cant really hold up to the other stronger pieces.
4 out of 5
CAN YOU FEEL THE LOVE TONIGHT - here it is, 1994's oscar winner for best original song. honostly i feel that the circle of life deserved that award, but here's the song that got it. the film's version is very romantic, especially for featuring a couple of lions, timon and pumba's parts are funny, but it is simba and nala's portion that takes it home. btw elton john's version at the end is a definate winner.
5 out of 5
SONGS OVERALL - 5 out of 5
so if the score gets 5 and the songs get 5, why does the album only get 4? the answer's pretty simple. for the first time since 1989 with the little mermaid, two composers helped on this film. one provided the film's score and one provided the music for the songs. because two composers worked on this, it feels a little incohesive at times. this isn't really noticible within the film but on the soundtrack it definately stands out. elton john and hans zimmer both did a great job and the only really saving factor are the african rhythms that they both used. although this is a great soundtrack, that lack of unity does bring it down.
despite that minor flaw, this is a must-own for any disney fan or music fan in general. this is a great soundtrack that ranks right up there with beauty and the beast and must never be forgotten.
Simply Perfect.......2007-04-09
Great Album!.......2007-03-31
Wonderful, if only for the instrumentals.......2007-02-14
Wonderful Soundtrack.......2006-11-16
The "extras" for this Special Edition include a mild and unnecessary remix of "Can You Feel The Love Tonight" and "The Morning Report," which is included on the Special Edition DVD release. Neither add to the collection, but it is nice to have "The Morning Report" on the disc.
Overall, this is one of Disney's strongest soundtracks. In my personal list, I rank it in second place behind Phil Collins' wonderfully tribal "Tarzan" soundtrack. If you don't already have the "Lion King" soundtrack, I highly suggest that you purchase this special edition copy if you are a true fan of the film or of Disney soundtracks in general.
Highly recommended.

The fabulously musical Kings Singers visit the realm of popular music in this recording of "timeless songs from famous movies." Their stellar blend flourishes when the Kings apply their close-harmony arrangements to a cappella versions of "Kokomo," "Everything I Do," "The Rose," and "Groovy Kind of Love." The recording falls short, however, when the group tackles songs that highlight a solo voice. Songs like "Wind Beneath My Wings," "I Will Always Love You," and "The Time of My Life" demand the distinctive interpretive character of a Whitney Houston or Bette Midler to enliven the music's passion. The Kings Singers have spent so much time perfecting the art of ensemble blending, that they've lost the ability to be successful soloists. The weakest arrangement is that of Paul McCartney's "Live and Let Die." The soloist struggles with intonation and audibly battles the tessitura of the ascending line. (Who would've thought that the former Beatle was such a flawless lyrical tenor?) Still, when the voices embark on what they do best--function as a vocal orchestra--the result is delightful. --Barbara Eisner BayerCustomer Reviews:
King's Singers - Thumbs up or down?.......2004-04-27
Get "Spirit Voices" instead.......2002-12-01
Both albums feature the otherwise-a cappella group singing with instrumental backing (mostly), but SV is successful at it, whereas COL demonstates how not to do it; to wit: take a talented six part vocal group, give them a crummy arrangement that doubles lots of vocal parts and pits the group against the orchestra, and make the (British) soloist give it some "soul" (ouch).
It took me a while to get used to SV, but now I really like it; COL, on the other hand, makes me want to bash out my own brains to make the pain stop. SV experiments with smaller orchestrations and interesting combinations of vocal and intrumental parts, but COL is just a big "let's get together and sing our lungs out with an orchestra" album, a style which must be popular in England or something.
Two stars, and only out of respect for the fact that The King's Singers is the best a cappella vocal group in the world (this album notwithstanding).

'Elevator Music'.......2001-12-16
It starts out very well with 'Lion King' until orchestration is added including a lot that seams synthesized and dimensionly flat. Diction holds no interest.
Have you ever had a mouthfull of de-ionized water? It's like water but something is so spewingly absent and bland.
This describes this CD. The sad thing is that there are so many pieces on this album that could have been completely captivating!

Disney has been a relatively late comer on Broadway, but it's been hitting pay dirt since the stage version of Beauty and the Beast opened to critical acclaim and commercial success in 1994, followed by The Lion King and Aida. While Aida was the only original stage creation, the other two featured new songs that were not in the movies. In addition, Disney worked with some of New York's finest theatrical talent. In hindsight, hiring Julie Taymor to stage The Lion King was a stroke of genius, but it really was a daring gamble at the Time. Likewise, Beauty and the Beast gave talented theater singers like Terrence Mann and Susan Egan a chance to shine in meaty roles. Disney groomed talent as well: Heather Headley was cast in a supporting part in The Lion King before moving on to the title role in Aida. All three shows are represented on this CD (with a companion book due in October 2002), making for a perfect introduction to their best-known songs. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

My favorites are "Whenever the Time is Now", "The Circle of Fire Prayer" and "The Lord's Prayer", though all others are wonderful as well. All songs are mellow yet suthing.
For "Whenever the Time is Now", I especially like the part about "Whoever you are is enough, Whatever you have is perfection, Whoever you are with is the one". These are the words we need to be reminded when turbulent times come when we always need to have more and better. For "The Circle of Fire", I will always remember the four words we want to bear in mind, which is gratitude, love, loyalty and justice... and these words begin with us.
Some songs are beautiful in melodies but not in words. However, these 10 songs are beautiful in melodies and artistic in words. May you experience love and peace while listening to this CD as well?

This compilation gives a pretty good idea of what you'll hear if you buy a ticket for a Broadway show in 2003. Leaving revivals aside (there's no Man of La Mancha or Gypsy, for instance), the tracks tend to encompass contemporary songwriters on the Great White Way. Fittingly, the CD begins and concludes with numbers from Hairspray, arguably the most vibrant new pop musical to come down the pike in ages. Sandwiched between are songs by authors making a belated stage debut (Mel Brooks and The Producers, Billy Joel and Movin' Out), arty newcomers (Janine Tesori and ) and seasoned pros (Alan Menken and Howard Ashman with Beauty and the Beast). Of course, the most seasoned pro of them all may well be Giacomo Puccini, making a belated Broadway debut thanks to Baz Lurhrmann's production of La Boheme. The addition of Chicago's "All That Jazz" (from the movie, not the show!) reeks of opportunism, but overall it doesn't spoil a varied collection that should appeal to broad-minded pop lovers everywhere. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Album Description
Having sold over 25,000 copies of their debut, Stairway To Fairyland, the subsequent tour with Saxon, Angra and Edguy and with Savatage and Skew Siskin in August 1999 as part of the Popkomm music fair in Cologne, Freedom Call were well on their way to triumphant beginnings. Their second release, Crystal Empire, even surpassed the debut's success. June 2002 saw the arrival of the third Freedom Call recording, Eternity, followed by an extensive tour with Blind Guardian, during which their most recent release, Live Invasion, was recorded. At the same time, Freedom Call established themselves as a headlining act in their own right and were celebrated as the stars of the Wacken Road Show 2004 night after night. The Circle Of Life will doubtlessly add to their new status. A large-scale European tour is in the pipeline for spring 2005, including a surprise special guest who is bound to send the ever-growing melodic metal fan community into raptures.Album Details

My name is Justin, and I am a Freedom Call fan........2006-07-15
I love them anyway. I know how cheesy they are, but I just don't care. I know their choruses are sing-songy - it just makes them that much easier to sing along with in the car (yes, I do that, thank you very much). Call it a guilty pleasure, but I am a confirmed Freedom Call fan.
Of course, there is a lot to like here. The guitar work is fantastic. The album is full of great melodies. And Chris Bay's vocals, which are very reminiscent of Andre Matos (though not quite as high), are crystal clear and absolutely perfect for this kind of music. Sure, the band is sticking pretty close to the same formula on Circle of Life as it has on all of its previous albums, but it's enjoyable, so I can't really complain. They do seem to be running a bit low on ideas though.
If you're into bands like Angra, Stratovarius, Helloween, Gamma Ray, and Hammerfall, and you don't mind a little cheese in your diet (and let's face it - if you listen to Hammerfall you can't mind it that much), then you'll probably enjoy Freedom Call as well.
