The Association will always be best known for their soft rock, romantic ballad, "Cherish." Covered by countless others, including The Partridge Family, it remains a staple of easy listening station formats. The group also had perkier moments, as best captured by the breezy "Windy." But they had other hits: "Along Came Mary," "Never My Love" and "Everything That Touches You" also gave the band significant chart positions. The Association's finer compositions borrowed from the more innocuous aspects of '60s folk rock, fusing it together with their capable vocals. Primarily a fan's record, The Association's Greatest Hits haven't--with the exception of "Cherish," and "Never My Love"--withstood the test of time too well. --Steve Gdula

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good and bad.......2007-06-09

The songs that were hits are just as you remember them. Those that didn't get much air play; well, there's a reason.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless.......2007-05-07

This music still holds up and I listen to it nearly every day. The Association was a great band and some of the songs on it that got very little airplay at the time, are my favorites. Great music, great group, great cd!

3 out of 5 stars Poor sound great group!!.......2007-04-27

What happen to the remastering in this cd???the sound is poor to say the least!!they could of payed a better tribute to a great group like the Association.we fans deserve better than this!!i recommend the Essentials which is remastered!!

4 out of 5 stars A memory of my youth.......2007-03-14

While there are a handful of songs on this CD that are obscure (to me at least); the Cd as a whole is a fine representation of the Association's multi layered "soft rock" sound. Songs like "Cherish" "Never My love" and "Everything That Touches You" take my back to the "puppy loves" of my youth. And who can listen to "Along Comes Mary" or the group's biggest hit "Windy", without gaining a spring to their step. This is a feelgood CD and a must have for collectors of sixties rock.

5 out of 5 stars Nostalgia at its best........2007-02-24

I first bought this album in 1970 as a 8 track. It was great listening then and its only gotten better.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, I love it.......2007-03-01

For anyone who likes to relive the golden era of pianists, a time when music itself was the core of a performance, this collection is a must have. The serene loneliness in Clara Haskil's interpretation of Mozart and Schubert was simply heartbreaking. Honest, elegant, and never self-centered, these memorable recordings deserve 5 solid stars.

5 out of 5 stars Clara Haskil Returns!.......2007-02-04

Like many of the recent "Original Masters" reissues, this 7CD set of music performed by pianist Clara Haskil has been available since last July as an import, and now has finally been released in the U.S. In fact, all of the music contained on "Clara Haskil: Philips Recordings 1951-1960" has been reissued previously on CD, in two different box sets in the now out-of-print "Clara Haskil Legacy" series. Despite this, it is wonderful to have these classic performances back, particularly because those "Legacy" volumes were fetching outrageous prices as rare collector's items. Haskil was one of the legendary interpreters of Mozart and her Concerto recordings presented here of Nos. 9, 20 (two versions, mono & stereo), 23 & 24 (along with those she made for Westminster and DG -- see my reviews) are not to be missed. But also her Beethoven, Schumann and Chopin renditions are so delicately light and breathtaking, they cannot be overlooked, and they provide such a nice contrast to all the romantic ivory pounders out there. The first three CDs capture her sensitivity in various Sonatas, and they are most excellent. If you love great piano music and didn't have a chance to get these marvelous performances the first time around, don't miss out now!

Music fans couldn't be blamed for thinking the reissue boom had run out of both steam and artistic merit. Then along comes this revealing 51-track double-disc anthology by the Association, much misunderstood purveyors of surprisingly enduring '60s hits such as "Along Comes Mary," "Cherish," "Windy," and "Never My Love." With their roots in the same potent Sunset Strip folk revival that yielded the Byrds and Buffalo Springfield, the Association's music embodied a more formal, pop-conscious wedding of folkie influences and the same affinity for adventurous vocal harmonies that fueled many of Brian Wilson's legendary productions during that epoch. Ironically, it was their very sense of cohesive unity that undermined them at the end of the decade, as more individual talents--and larger egos--came to the fore. But lovers of their rich SoCal pop sense--an ethos an attentive new generation of fans and musicians have perfectly dubbed "sunshine pop"--will find this collection rife with old friends (the aforementioned perennials and lesser hits like "Six Man Band" and "Goodbye, Columbus"), as well as some previously unreleased material, a few key solo outings, and a wealth of unheralded gems like the ambitious "Requiem for the Masses" and vibrant, upbeat tracks like "Come On In" and "Like Always." --Jerry McCulley

4 out of 5 stars The Association Anthology.......2005-10-04

For diehard fans, a complete musical trek thru The Association's career. Hearing them live recently transported me back to their debut era, and listening to this album solidified which of their songs became the obvious hits. Though enjoyable, we tend to program a playlist of our old favorites and discard the others... so for us, perhaps an album of the greatest hits might have filled the bill.

3 out of 5 stars the right sounds, and the others, too.......2004-07-12

you know these guys as the 60's group who gave us such timeless and beautiful hits as "cherish," "never my love," "windy," and "along comes mary." unfortunately, though all those songs are stupendous, their non-hits were pretty much non-hits for a reason. oh well. and there's two cds worth of it.

5 out of 5 stars From Vinyl to CD, Really Just the Right Sound!.......2004-04-12

I'm thrilled I can join with the other Association fans and celebrate the release of Just the Right Sound. I ordered it a few weeks ago, and have been playing it non-stop. Wonderful stuff. I was fortunate enough to see the group quite a few times during the '60's, including one memorable week in 1966 where I saw them 5 nights in a row at the old Cherry Hill Music Hall. They were indeed fabulous live, as the "Association Live" two record set attests. I have all their albums on vinyl, and have played them occasionally over the years with an eye towards making sure they don't get worn. In fact, the beginning of my "Birthday" vinyl is very worn since I played "Come on In" constantly for many years. To have it now on CD is something I cherish (pun intended). I'm thrilled that people remember one of the great bands of all time. Their music is terrific and timeless. I'd love to see a web site dedicated to the group, with updates on what the original 6/7 are up to (of course other than Brian Cole who passed away tragically in 1972). I did see the modern Association a few years ago in Milwaukee (with Russ Giguere and Larry Ramos as the original members still in place). Let's keep the Association alive!!!

5 out of 5 stars Just The Right Sound; The Association Anthology.......2004-01-11

Wonderful! I love the way the compilation progresses through the years. I would, however, have ditched the "new" releases and included more songs from the "real" group (especially those that included the original 6/7 members). It's easy to praise the obvious No.1 tunes, but to fully realize the magic of this band, take a listen to some of the lesser known cuts,i.e. "Everything That Touches You", "On A Quiet Night" and "Birthday Morning". Lush. Truly lush. One of the amazing things about this band is the true muscianship of each and every member . I was so very fortunate to have heard them play live on three different occasions--two of them with the original 7 member lineup. These guys could really play!!! I only wish there had been a few cuts from the LIVE album. This band was one of the best live performers I've ever heard. Tired of syntho-pop? Long for the days of Brian Wilson-like intricate harmonies? Give this cd a try.

3 out of 5 stars Better Cuts needed-several cuts are boring.......2003-11-22

This box set needs a little changing--alot of the cuts are mindless pieces of music-boring and uninspired--I don't know why cuts from the Live album were not included-these are more interesting--Association was great live better than in the Studio except for their hits. The Live album is coming out Dec 9--it is great-do not miss it.-I say stick with the Greatest Hits album and wait for an updated Box that is more inspiring.

Another legendary George Szell recording, this time partnering him with Pierre Fournier, the magnificent French cellist. At the very beginning of his career, Szell recorded this concerto in Prague with the Czech Philharmonic and none other than Pablo Casals. That recording, made around 1938, is still available. This stereo remake with the Berlin Philharmonic shows both artists at the very peak of their form. The the couplings, too, are uniquely appealing. That this compelling performance is available on DG's budget line underscores one of the great peculiarities of the classical music business. In case you haven't noticed, there is no relationship at all between quality of performance and price. So what are you waiting for? --David Hurwitz

    4 out of 5 stars best Dvorak.......2005-10-09

I have heard perhaps 5 or 6 versions of the Dvorak cello concerto. Of the ones I have heard this is the best (close competition from Du Pre only). The other pieces are okay but the Dvorak is the reason you would purchase this. The recording quality is especially good with the solo cello while the orchestra occasionally is not as clear. Recommended. I would have given it 5 stars if I liked the other two pieces nearly as well.

5 out of 5 stars The best music ever written!.......2004-12-12

Well, that's a large claim to make, but I'm going to be 60 in a few months and so I will state my frank opinion: the Dvorak Cello Concerto is the best piece of music ever written by mankind, and you should really listen to THIS version, with Pierre Fournier on the cello, and George Szell conducting the Berlin Philharmonic.

This could hardly be called "program music." Yet it seems to address any questions which you bring to it -- questions about love, mortality, and the gods, among many others. And there are many, many moments when Dvorak is simply "out there" -- communicating with the stars.

My runner-up is the Brahms Violin Concerto! :-)

5 out of 5 stars Very personal account!.......2004-10-14

The level of concentration throughout in this set of recordings is amazing...even though some may not know it, the Lamoreux orchestra is one of the very finest and it is the oldest orchestra in Paris. All of the recordings are top notch and are played with polish.

As a backgrounder, you may want to investigate the 1936 Casals/Szell coupling of the Dvorak on EMI! Wonderful in different ways!

5 out of 5 stars Dramatic and Passionate.......2004-06-20

Beijingfox2 and California music fan have just about covered the bases regarding this outstanding recording, but I wanted to add a few words from a different perspective. Listen to this CD without being involved in another activity. Turn down the lights. Allow yourself to be totally immersed in the music. All three pieces, but especially "Schelomo" are emotionally powerful, and will sweep you away.

    5 out of 5 stars beijingfox.......2003-12-06

There are countless versions in the catalogue of this concerto (probably the most difficult solo cello part to play completely convincingly in the current popular repertoire - it's HARD!) and many play "very well"....Lyn Harrell, Paul Tortelier, Mistislav Rostropovich, Heinrich Schiff, but the overall picture and feel which MUST be portrayed beyond the notes is normally missing to a degree in these and certainly in almost all others (including Yo yo Ma, Jaqueline Du Pre and many many others eauuuch). The technical playing of Fournier is without question particularly authoritative and impressive (all cellists agree!) - the right hand/bowing phrasing is special in a way which is just unforgettable and rich in tone....and the left hand contact and articulation with the strings never less than brilliant and inspired - but beyond that, the romantic sweep, ultimate control and passionate throb of the playing on ALL 4 strings - even high on the fingerboard with the A string (and D) - is unmatched even after 40 years! If you really want to hear one of THE definitive concerto recordings of the gramophone catologue (up there with Josef Hoffman's Chopin concerto recordings) then this is it. You don't necessarily need to be a cellist to appreciate the sheer gifted and beautifully thought-out musical tapestry beyond the bounds of mere cello-playing which is represented in this deeply passionate, and unforgettable performance . It will be up there on your SPECIAL list. Play it LOUD!!!! Beijingfox@hotmail.com

    Album Description

You wouldn't think that a band with such a polished studio sound would be a good live act, but the Association were real pros, not only capable of hitting those incredible harmonies in a live (and high-altitude!) setting, but also—given their reliance on studio musicians—surprisingly capable players as well. This April 3, 1970 show at the University of Utah also reveals some other sides of the band, as they cover some songs (Let's Get Together; Babe, I'm Gonna Leave You) that reveal, lurking behind those note-perfect arrangements, was a pretty fine folk-rock group. We've squeezed the entire, 74-minute double live-album on to one CD—it's a great listen! 5 out of 5 stars Associate with the vocal Elite.......2007-06-07

One of the most maligned bands on tour after the mid-70's for blandness and "squareness", The Association my friends, was the real vocal deal, on-stage or in the studio, and this live album is the diamond in their collection. When the Beachboys, the Mamas and Papas and others could not produce a lush, un-flawed, re-creation of their studio work, The Association delivered without much impact in 1970. This group, from the start, had the assistance of the tenor lead from The Hi-Lo's, a 50's vocal quartet to sharpen their vocals with each album, although losing a founding member to the draft, replaced by Mr.Ramos. Their psychodelic covered l.p. to follow this live one was their "Sgt. Pepper's," with numerous joyous songs that were not included in this live album. Until another accidental loss of a founding member, Terry Kirkman, the band could have gone another decade or more. Most all of their albums hold up today because of their high standards of imaginative harmonies attached to strong lyrics and excellent instrumentation that all Everly Brothers-trained listeners demand.

5 out of 5 stars Was there ever a more professsional band?.......2007-04-20

The Association never really broke through in the UK. This was despite a whole series of beautiful singles that had made the group huge in America. By the time 'Time for Living' had hit the top thirty and given the band their first hit in Britain, BBC Radio One DJs were telling their listeners that The Association were "supposed to be great live". What makes the live album from 1970 so special is the way that this wonderful group were able to reproduce those heavenly harmonies on stage. Two other live albums from the same year The Byrds' 'Untitled' and 'Four Way Street' from Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young" fall short in this respect even though the groups in question were well known for highly accomplished harmonies in the studio. When you add to the Association's achievement the high quality instrumentation (which is all their own) and the extraodinarily democratic nature of the band then this becomes one of the best live albums from the time. No bruised egoes here - and certainly no dope-driven turgidity - just sheer professionalism. I acquired all the Association's CDs in Japan - but they are long out of print there now. Congratulations to 'Collectors Choice' for the wonderful job they do on deleted back catalogues - and bring on The 5th Dimension!

5 out of 5 stars They're Just As Great Live As In The Studio.......2005-01-26

Known primarily for their late-60's hit singles, one thing that too many people overlook about the Association is that they were also a great live band, as this 1970 release, "The Association: Live" proves beyond a doubt. Recorded in concert on April 3, 1970 at the University of Utah in Salt Lake City, this seven-man band are in top form. They're more raw-sounding live, but still with all of the great vocal harmonies and musical chemistry that made them so good on record. This is a 74-minute, 22-song set with the Association going through their repertoire up through their 1969 self-titled masterpiece, which they were touring for at the time. Many Association favorites are featured, including "Along Comes Mary," "Goodbye Columbus," "Never My Love," "Time It Is Today," "Cherish," and their biggest hit, "Windy," all performed wonderfully. Not only that, but the band do a fine cover of the Youngbloods' "Get Together," plus a jaunty, previously unheard song called "Just About The Same," as well as absolutely haunting renditions of "Remember" and "Requiem For The Masses." And if that wasn't enough, the Association also perform three songs from their brilliant self-titled album: "Goodbye Forever," "Dubuque Blues," and "What Were The Words." The band are also very funny showmen, such as the bit where they try to get the audience to "get in touch" with one another, and Larry Ramos---the lone Hawaiian in the band---remarking how hard it is working in a group "with six token whites." Priceless!Interestingly, though, the Association don't look back upon this live album with great affection. The University of Utah, where this gig was recorded, is apparently at a high altitude, and the band say that the slightly-thinner air affected their vocal performances. Well, guys, you could've fooled me, because you sound superb on this recording. To heck with thinner air---this is a GREAT live performance. If you love this band as much as I do, then you just *gotta* pick up "The Association: Live." And thank you, Association, for all of your great music.

    4 out of 5 stars A surprisingly-good set, now a better bargain.......2004-02-16

I've always been amazed at the sheer amount of abuse heaped upon this album. "Out-of-key," "poorly performed" and at worst "irrelevant," "The Association Live" gets an awful lot of flack, and in my opinion, most of it is sorely undeserved.

True, the band wasn't exactly the hippest property around at the time (heck, this is from a Salt Lake City concert). And yes, there is a definate aura of studio tamper-ment that hovers around the album. But let's be honest, folks; how much does hearing The Association live and "raw" really matter?

In fact, when this album works best, it works as a wonderful "prism" through which their sixties hits are refracted. For although their self-titled album was slightly behind them by this point, the spirit that formed it was clearly still in attendence (and you can read my review of their self-titled album if you want to know my opinion on THAT heavenly piece of plastic). Thus, pure live, slightly overdubbed, or pure studio, each song is given a spirited re-arrangement that manages to freshen up even the most saccharine of their hits. Call me a heretic, but I think the version of "Goodbye Columbus" here absolutely blows away the hit version; while some of the studio perfection is inevitably lost, the sheer energy (And these guys are more than capable!) of the rendition and rearrangement let it become something *more* than the studio version. The same goes for the played-to-death "Cherish," which I enjoy here far more than I do the hit version.

Additionally, some of the re-arrangements are very indicative of a lot of thought and creativity. In particular, Terry Kirkman's flute becomes a primary instrument in many songs, and in some cases ("Along Comes Mary" and "Time it Is Today") this manages to completely transform the songs.

Downsides? Well, some of the selections chosen are a bit dubious (although I absolutely love the inclusion of "Goodbye Forever," one of the oft-overlooked gems from Self-titled/Stonehenge), and while some of the rearrangements work, I'm ambivalent regarding the decision to turn "Dubuque Blues" into a "shouter." And the crowd banter, while amusing the first few times through, is occasionally a bit awkward (one skit about "getting in touch with those around you" goes on for uncomfortably long).

This all used to be something of a foregone conclusion, though, as "Live" was previously only available as a prohibitively-expensive Japanese import. Thankfully, Collectors Choice has reissued the set domestically, and while these domestic CDs have come under fire for losing the bonus tracks on the Japanese issues, this had nothing to lose in the first place! A few listens have revealed nothing obvious missing from the import CD version.

Still, most listeners (and especially Association neophytes and/or those who aren't exactly sure if a live album by such a historically-unhip band is a great investment) will do well by first tracking down a cheap vinyl copy of the album, which tends to be fairly easy to do. I love "Live" for its rearrangements of some seriously-overplayed tracks and uncelebrated gems, but those looking for something more approximating the hits will do better to stick with the studio incarnations.

5 out of 5 stars Let's Get Associated! A Classic CD that Deserves Its Place in Rock and History .......2007-07-23

I was in junior high school when this LP came out, and I purchased it for no other reason than for the its two hits: "Cherish" and "Along Comes Mary". However, the genius of this recording is still etched in my memory today. Let me state emphatically: The Association was the best VOCAL group in pop and rock history. One listen to this recording will provide evidence. Rarely can one find a record in which all the cuts are outstanding. Allow me to descrbe some of the songs:

"Enter the Young"- an homage to youth. I have read that the Association wanted this to be the new National Anthem.
"Your Own Love"-Sublime lead vocals by Russ Giguere, and six-part harmonies emblematic of the group.
"Blistered"-fast, upbeat, and a bit of country.
"I'll Be Your Man"-more intricate harmonies.
"Along Comes Mary"- a hit, cerebral. When's the last time you heard a song with "psychodrama" in the lyrics?
"Cherish"- arguably the greatest love song ever written. Too much airplay has not ruined the all-around beauty of this timeless song.
"Standing Still"-more loveliness, written by drummer Ted Bluechel. It makes me wonder why he wasn't more involved/prolific.
"Remember"-gorgeous, almost like a Gregorian chant.
"Message of Our Love"-intricate harmonies with state-of-the-art psychedia. A most melodic, unusual song.
"Round Again"-more unusual instrumentation combined with a catchy tune
"Changes- Jules Alexander's tribute to song writing.

Forty-one years later this recording is fresh, original, and well ahead of its time. Curt Boettcher's production is unique, replete with experimental sounds. I guess this is the Association's "Pet Sounds". And like "Pet Sounds" this under-rated CD is just as important. I'm only sorry that I can only give 5 stars!

5 out of 5 stars The Music of Your Life- 60s style.......2007-05-20

I literally grew up listening to these guys; was rocked to sleep to their music in fact. I have had several used copies of this on LP but on every one side B was too scratched to play, So I was delighted to find it on CD finally.

5 out of 5 stars Top of the Line........2007-05-13

This was the first album that I purchased for myself when I was in college in 1964. The musicality of the group entranced me and that has held true through the years. Of course, Cherish and Along Comes Mary both were hits at the time. However Blistered is as hot a song as any I have heard and Message of Our Love is as pretty as Cherish. These boys were all great musicians and put together alot of great songs. All of them wrote songs and their names appear on all of their albums.

I highly recommend this album as the Top of the Line and one of the best from that era.

4 out of 5 stars Short and Sharp Pop.......2006-06-03

This, the Association's first LP is composed mostly of short pop songs with tight sparkling vocals. It shows the group as folk popsters with a touch of jazz. The two hits on here are "Along Comes Mary" and "Cherish", which are excellent. There are other nice tracks on here also. "Enter the Young" is a powerful opener and "Blistered" is a cool rocker. "Round Again" is a nice jazzy track and "I'll be Your Man" is a pretty ballad with an upbeat chorus. All these tracks come in under the three minute mark except "Message of Our Love" which tends to drag. Another minus is the song that closes the album "Changes". It's listenable but too slightly more adult Partridge Family fair. All in all there is tight musianship by sessioneers and very nice pop-rock. The best of the tracks leave you wanting more. A nice introduction to the Association.

No chart hits, but some Association fans rank this record as their best; the group had gained creative control, and together with producer John Boylan (who would later produce Linda Rondstadt and Pure Prairie League among other top acts), they explored a more country-rock sound as well as offering a dose of their usual eclecticism. Includes Look at Me, Look at You; Yes, I Will; Love Affair; The Nest; What Were the Words; Are You Ready; Dubuque Blues; Under Branches; I Am Up for Europe; Broccoli, and Goodbye Forever. 4 out of 5 stars Intro into music.......2007-03-06

This album was my first taste of folk/rock so many years ago. I still have the album some 35 years later and it sparks the same emotions. I wasn't old enough at the time to listen to the music without attaching myself to it. Each song became a part of who I was at the time. Not even 10 years old when my dad bought me this album, the Association told me there was some fantastic world waiting for me. Listening to it again now brings back memories of clothes on the line, Victrolas and amazement of the world.

5 out of 5 stars Another Assocaition Relation.......2006-06-28

It's nice to see Brian's son's post. Your dad is one of my favorite bass players. I was saddened by his passing.

My uncle, Pat Colecchio (their Manager) got album art credit for this, whatever that means.

But aside from that this is my favorite album. Dubuque Blues is a real work of art and The Nest is a Magnum Opus. The band at their best musically and at their songwriting prime. It's good to this day.

    Get it.

5 out of 5 stars The Association Hitting On All Cylinders.......2006-06-08

I'll make this review short. Why you ask? It doesn't take much to say this is the finest hour of the Association. They sound perfect and natural. The song credits are shared and John Boylan, producer, does a fine, fine job. To think I bought this album at Radioshack who also had "Live". I batted .500 that day. I bought "The Association" but passed on the concert album for no specific reason. I just now am listening to that live LP and thinking it's great. But back to "The Association". I bought it in the mid seventies and I'm still digging it intensely in 2006. I can't believe I first thought I was buying a cutout that turned out to be part of my musical life... and you other reviewers who say the same in maybe different ways have let me know I have pretty good taste in music!! Buy this and experience. It will hit you and perhaps become part of you too. To Chip Cole, son of a member, your review is much appreciated and Brian is remembered with every listening of the Association, group and cd.

    5 out of 5 stars THE best.......2006-05-11

Contrary to what one reviewer states, The Nest is NOT a cover of anyone. The Nest is written by a member of The Association (Ted Bluechel, Jr) and is superb! This entire album is one that I recommend to everyone! It is one of those jewels of the era that only a few have discovered. As near to being the perfect listening experience as possible.

5 out of 5 stars An Association Appreciation.......2004-05-24

The Association are one of the most underacknowledged brilliant bands from the late 60's/early 70's. Oh sure, these guys had several big hit singles through 1968 ("Windy" being the best-known of the lot), but come 1969, the public's interest in The Association was waning, which is a total shame if you ask me. After all, these guys from Los Angeles have created some of the most beautiful pop/rock that has ever been done. (There's also a marvelous art-rock feel to some of their material---"Requiem For The Masses" is a perfect example.) Their tight musical chops & intelligent songwriting alone is worth the price of admission, but then, there's also their heavenly choir voices....aaaah. Pure vocal magic. The Association may be best known for their early ballads, but these domestic re-issues of their catalog prove beyond a doubt that there is so much more to this band than just their "Greatest Hits" collection.I can't believe the whole world totally missed the boat on the group's fabulous self-titled album from 1969. "The Association" marked the beginning of the downward arc for the band commercially: there were no hit singles, and record sales weren't too hot, either. But *creatively*, the band had never been better. I love all of their earlier albums, but "The Association" is the group's finest work. By this time, the band had branched out into creating songs that were a bit more sophisticated and arty. In fact, the group sound on this album like a cross between The Moody Blues & The Alan Parsons Project! Even the album cover, with it's striking "Stonehenge in outer space" painting, signaled that The Association were doing something very different indeed with this record. And it's magnificent.Gorgeous songs abound everywhere: "Love Affair," "The Nest," "Under Branches," and the brilliant album-closer, "Boy On The Mountain," which almost brings me to tears whenever I hear it. "Yes I Will" & "Are You Ready" are really catchy songs that *should* have been big hits. And then there's "Broccoli"---it is what it is, folks. If this wonderfully silly song doesn't put a smile to your face, then you must not have a sense of humor! The door may have been closing on The Association by the time 1969 rolled around, but the band were still at the top of their game musically. "The Association" is a fabulous album by this equally fabulous band, and is a true buried musical treasure. Yes, there IS more to The Association than just "Windy."

5 out of 5 stars A powerful and wonderful CD.......2005-11-08

The performances are superb. The sound quality is excellent. It is a fine choice of works by Rimsky-Korsakov (over 2 hours and 35 minutes of music). We hear one of my favorite performances of Sheherazade. And the Capriccio Espagnol. The Flight of the Bumblebee. The Tsar Saltan Suite, the Golden Cockerel Suite, the Russian Easter Festival Overture. And the Second symphony. These are all dramatic works by a master of orchestration.

I highly recommend this two-disc set.

    5 out of 5 stars POWERFUL , and AWESOME!!!.......2004-07-11

The power that radiates from the instruments in Scheherezade is magnificient. Please, I know this line of CD's are expensive, but they are worth it. The sound is incredible! if you turn it up real loud, while listening through the headphones, you can hear the people taking their breaths before they play, dropping various items such as mallets, and sticks! Thats just how sensitive the sound is. Out of 10 stars, i give it Infinity stars...every time I listen to it, it gets better, and better, and better............

    5 out of 5 stars A must.......2002-12-14

Buy this CD. Don't think about it. Just buy it. I, personally, bought this CD because of the fact that it had Sheherazade (an incredibly moving and colorful piece). This interpretation of Sheherazade by Karajan is among the best (if not THE best). However, as I began to listen to the rest of the CD I found the other pieces to be equally brilliant and astounding. The flare of Capriccio Espagnol, the dramatic Second Symphony and the simple ingenuity and cheeriness of the Tsar Sultan suite. The piece that I found most surprising was the Russian Easter Festival Overture. This is one of music's most under appreciated pieces in music, and ranks easily belong side Tchaikovsky's Romeo and Juliet or Brahms Academic Festival and Tragic overtures. Its relatively simplistic themes are some of the most exciting and riveting every written. This CD is a must for ANY lover (or of anybody even slightly interested in classical music in general). I would note that the sound quality is excellent as well...if that's a must for some of you.
