One Wild Night? Well, that's not strictly true, as this live album was recorded at Bon Jovi concerts spanning three decades. But why be pedantic when the result is a live album that effectively doubles as a greatest-hits collection? Bon Jovi's songs are tailor-made for stadiums and arenas, and, from classic fist-in-the-air rockers ("Livin' on a Prayer," "Bad Medicine," "You Give Love a Bad Name," "Runaway") to lighters-in-the-air numbers ("Keep the Faith," "Wanted Dead or Alive," "Something to Believe In"), the choices are suitably larger than life. The career-reviving single "It's My Life" sounds right at home, as do great covers of Neil Young's "Rockin' in the Free World" (recorded, appropriately enough, in Johannesburg in 1995) and the Boomtown Rats' "I Don't Like Mondays" (performed with Sir Bob Geldof). --Robert Burrow

IT'S ONE WILD NIGHT, ALRIGHT!!!.......2007-02-17

Live Concert Versions of Bon Jovi's Greatest Hits.......2007-01-19
"One Wild Night: Live 1985-2001" by Bon Jovi, Is a compilation of Bon Jovi's best songs, performed at various concert events from 1985 to 2001. For Bon Jovi fans, it's classic Bob Jovi and a Must Have! If you like music recorded from "Live" performances, You will love this album! If you prefer "Studio-Cut" versions, you may not like this album because it has the sound and feel of a live concert.
zero stars.......2005-11-13
One WEAK night!...zero stars if that was available. I never realized Bon Jovi was this bad a live band. They obviously get a LOT of production help in the studio because this album (several different concerts in several different venues) is ALL bad. Sorry for them and sorry for me for buying it.
Bon Jovi rocks.......2005-08-09
I found this CD to be extemely uplifting, great music to listen to while driving.
not a greatest hits album.......2005-05-14
This is not Bon Jovi's greatest hits, and that's the only bad thing that anyone who likes Bon Jovi can say about this. It's a fun collection of some live great live performances. Bon Jovi is great in concert, interacting with the crowd, and building up the energy and fun. You can hear that the audience and performers had a great time. If you like Bon Jovi, then this is certainly worth the money!

RCA has often been criticized for repetitive and poorly annotated Elvis reissues. Things have gotten much more interesting, thanks to imaginative projects such as the ongoing Essential Elvis series; Such a Night is the sixth title in the string. Between 1960 (when he left the army) and '64, Presley spent 11 nights cutting 81 masters in Nashville. Those tracks were later spread out across albums, singles, and compilations. The original masters of 50 of those tunes (some of which are heard here in alternate takes) ended up on the Top 100 charts. Fifteen went gold and six made it to platinum. For Such a Night, producers Ernst Michael Jorgensen and Roger Semon assembled 19 alternate takes and the master take of the title cut into what could have been a Presley album from the period. The result is an astonishing glimpse into one of the artist's legendary all-night recording marathons. While Presley fans will swoon, this is no collectors-only disc. He literally nails every tune here. Snatches of studio patter add atmosphere. And while some of the material is dated, the rockin' "Little Sister" and a killer version of the Little Willie John hit "Fever" are as fresh today as when they were recorded. Actually, taking into account the improved mix heard here, they're probably fresher. --Robert Baird

Such A Night It Was.......2007-07-08
Man...this release really gets you up close with the man who not only made rock n roll but made his music breathe.Elvis gave a song life. What I love about this set is the way it gets you on the inside.these alternate takes are as good as the ones that were selected for release. Many were nervous when Elvis came back to the states from serving in the Army. Many questions abounded but Elvis let his God breathed talent do his answering.Stuck on You,Such a Night,Memphis Tennessee,Fever are awesome. The fun nature of a Elvis recording session are on full display here.Listen, laugh at times and enjoy the ride.A MUST HAVE for Elvis fans.
This is my song........2007-01-13
This is the sixth (and last) volume in the Essential Elvis series, and it's a winner. It features alternate takes of songs recorded in Nashville between 1960 and 1964, other than "Such a Night", which is the "regular" version (it does include two previously unreleased false starts before the song). Elvis' early '60s Nashville material is great, and highly underrated. These alternate takes are almost as good as the versions of the songs that actually ended up being used. In most cases, there aren't any noticeable mistakes made, but for whatever reason, Elvis wasn't satisfied with the performance. This is a fascinating alternate look at Elvis that his fans will enjoy.
the king deserves the throne.......2003-08-30
The sixth in the series `Essential Elvis', Such a Night is an astonishing collection of overlooked masterpieces recorded by Elvis over 11 nights at Studio B in Nashville in the early `60s. Though the original sessions produced some 81 masters, the 20 songs and bits of studio babble fully encapsulate the spirit and mindset of the post-rockabilly, post-army Presley. Far from the lazy and blubberminded spoiler on the decline he's been painted as during this period, Prez simple dazzles with extraordinary spirit and passion on Such a Night, an album tied less to his roots in rockabilly (Soldier Boy, There's Always Me) as the successful contemporary adult sound of Patsy Cline and Jim Reeves (the title track, Fever, Little Sister, The Girl of My Best Friend, Surrender). Obviously hyper and excited with it all, Presley moves skillfully between a suave new motivation and the edgy rebelliousness of his former glory; a fascinating display in which his range crackles impressively through all the nuances - from deep mud bog bass to whistling wind falsetto. At the time, few of these tracks were really big hits (Stuck On You, Little Sister) but 40 years on, each and every one is a captivating discovery, a revelation of Presley's pure power as a brilliant vocal interpreter and as revealed here, an intuitive musician. Backed by the sharpest studio pros in the business (a lengthy list known appropriately as the `A' Team), hearing it all in light of what else was going on in music at the time, I'd take this over the Beatles' hand-holding or the Beach Boys' deuce coupes, whatever the size.
Top Notch Outtakes.......2002-12-19
"Elvis Is Back" has always been one of my favorite albums and naturally not long after this 6th essential Elvis volume was released, I went to the store and purchased it. I had pretty high expectations. They were surely met and exceeded. The first five out of six songs are alternates from the "Elvis Is Back" sessions and are just wonderful, very crisp and clear. The remaining 13 songs span 7 Nashville sessions and years 1961-1964. Highlights from the disc are the title track, "Give Me The Right", "I'm Coming Home", "Night Rider", "Memphis" and "It Hurts Me". Overall, RCA/BMG did a great job of selecting good quality outtakes and mixing the studio atmosphere of the sessions to create a great feel for how these tunes were cut 40 years ago.
Ranks with Essential Elvis 3 as my top two favorites from the Essential Elvis series. A definite must have.
Fly On the Wall.......2002-09-10
You'll either love this CD or think it's unnecessary (I love it). It would be great to hear the complete 'Elvis is Back!' sessions, alternate takes & all, just to see how the songs progressed (Note: That's Chet Atkins complimenting Elvis after the botched take of 'Stuck On You'). The reissued 18-track CD of 'Elvis is Back!' combined with this CD make a formidable case for those who claim that Elvis was at his peak vocally right after his discharge from the Army. His voice was still strong enough that he did not have to rely as heavily on his vibrato, which he tended to do -- sometimes annoyingly so -- during the late 60s & 70s. Also, song selection was generally good, sometimes great (it got a lot worse before it got better), and the studio band was awesome -- probably the best of that era, and not equaled until the Motown gang and L.A.'s Wrecking Crew hit their stride a few years later. Hats off to the original sound engineers/producers as well as those responsible for the remastering/reissue. You won't find many forty-year-old recordings that sound this good.

Great vocal virtuosity.......2005-04-07
This is a great recording, by two great artists. Carole Farley is the ideal singer for Ned Rorem's songs. She spell out every
word and every nuance, giving each song and every poem their full character. The songs are a revelation. I recommend this recording without hesitation.

Confuzzled.......2004-01-03
While these song are GREAT...I cannot get over Carole Farley; her voice is so affected (kind of like a sprechstimme; overly dramatic...). I love the fact that Rorem himself is playing the piano, and as a singer, the catalogue of songs is good to have...but cant say I could ever manage getting over Farley's affectation. There are far superior recordings out there.
An American Composer of Art Song.......2003-04-02
American popular song, whether standards, show tunes, jazz, blues, or rock, is one of our country's most visible artistic achievements. American classical (or Art) songs are much less known. Ned Rorem (b. 1923) is probably the greatest American composer in this unfamiliar medium. Rorem is sometimes dubbed the "American Schubert."
This disc features 32 of Ned Rorem's songs for voice and piano. Soprano Carole Farley is the accomplished singer, and Ned Rorem himself plays the piano. The disc is special because it features settings of the works of American poets. The CD begins with 9 settings of poems by the mid-twentieth century poet, Theodore Roethke, and concludes with settings of 5 poems by Walt Whitman. The disc also includes settings of poems by William Carlos Williams, Gertrude Stein, and Paul Goodman, among others. Thus the disc combines in a special way American creative effort in poetry and in music.
Rorem's songs are declamatory in style. Typically, the voice line delivers the text of the poetry in a sort of chant. The relationship between the voice line and the piano is far from Schubertian. Generally, the piano takes a separate line and accentuates the voice by means of large chords or by runs or by other comments and punctuation on the voice. The texts are well set and the music is effective. There are some unusual harmonies with jazz and blues influences. Rorem's piano accompanyment on this disc gives the recording a sense of authenticity -- we get a good idea of how the composer wants his songs to be conveyed.
The disc includes excellent program notes and texts of all the songs. Naxos has received deservedly high praise for its "American Classics" series which makes much music written by Americans available on CD at a low price. This disc includes some lovely, little-known songs. It is an excellent introduction to the American art song and to the music of Ned Rorem.
more German than Rorem.......2002-07-20
I've been a Rorem fan since hearing a highschool friend perform some of his work in her college recital. His startling, atonal songs were an instant revelation. For years there were few reliable CDs of his vocal work. A scandal considering his reputation rests more on his art songs and chamber music than on his orchestral pieces. This Naxos entry of a wide overview of his best songs is thus quite welcome, due largely to its availability, wide distribution and professional packaging (he's had some shoddy issues before with incorrect liner notes, etc.; the challenge of the low budget).
I can't call myself an unalloyed fan of soprano Carole Farley however. Her delivery here recalls the speak-singing style of German 12-tone composers (a specialty of hers), and can sound melodramatic, especially when she rushes the more delicate passages.
I prefer Rorem's softer, more melodious French side, the one that descends from Impressionism and is more warmly emotive. While Farley loses the shading of some of the more fragile songs, she is well-suited to the longer, more forceful pieces. I've heard many readings of "Early in the Morning" (one of Rorems most popular songs) by male and female vocalists, and its tale of wistful nostalgia is muted by Farley's direct approach. However, she nails "My Papa's Waltz," a fractured setting for a Roethke poem about a frightened child forced to dance with a drunken father. Here her acting skills come to the fore, and she perfectly captures the tipsy madness of the song. Rorem can be quite theatrical himself on occasion. She does almost as well with "See How they love me," a ballad with a regular pace that allows her assertive style to breathe.
At any rate it's great to hear these lovely songs in a recent (2000) recording, accompanied (rather emphatically, but perhaps he's matching his theatrical singer) by Rorem himself.
The similar Susan Graham album is more to my taste, but this is a more than competent bargain set.
delightful art songs.......2002-01-02
rorem's songs are amazing, and naxos has done well
to group them by poet. the complete settings of roethke
are particularly compelling and edgey.
carole farley's voice is lovely, but her phrasing
and willingness to push her voice seems
a big departure from the styling of art songs i've
heard by poulenc and somers.
this takes some getting used to- at least 3 or 4 complete
listen-throughs in my case. her voice is almost jazzy,
kind of like early recordings by holly cole.
anyway, rorem accompanies her on piano so obviously
this reading fits with his intent; his playing is also delightful.
one small quibble- although there are 32 songs, the CD is
57 minutes- brief by naxos standards.

Nostalgia Trip.......2005-09-24
Helps you remember these great and atmospheric movies. Only Nino Rota writes better movie music.
Sweet and Sublime.......1999-06-13
"La valse de Francois T" makes my heart want to burst. Never has sweet melancholia been so sweetly and lyrically expressed. This entire album is a godsend, but "La valse" - it is something else, far beyond my power to convey.
The aural equivalent of Truffaut's films: humane, touching........1998-10-03
Hitchcock had Bernard Herrmann, and Spielberg has John Williams, and Francois Truffaut had Georges Delerue. "Jules and Jim" jauntily evokes the delicious problems of one woman in love with two men. With "Shoot the Piano Player" you can almost see Charles Aznavour in his seedy Paris cafe. And most gloriously, for Truffaut's Oscar winner as Best Foreign Film, "Day for Night," Delerue composes a chorale that celebrates the endlessly repetitious, endlessly varied rituals of filmmaking. A wonderful collection of themes from nine films (plus "La valse de Francois T."), performed by the London Sinfonietta under the direction of Hugh Wolff.

great cd, passes the time test.......2002-09-27
I bought this cd on a whim, probably in 97, and LOVED it for a couple years, then gave it to a friend who lost it. I've been thinking of it since and went on line to look for it, hence me writing this. I agree with one of the reviews that I read that the Volga song is exceptional... kalinka is great too...
The best collection of this sort of music I have found.......1999-12-12
This collection is superlative. I have not heard the song of the volga boatman performed with such character before.. In fact all the songs are interpreted with unparalleled depth and nuance; notice the attention to detail even in the soft passages. My dad is from Russia, and proclaims it some of the best he has heard anyhwere.

Customer Reviews:
Exquisite, with glimpses of a transcendental beauty.......2003-09-19
I can't believe it. This is the first "Christmas" disc I ever bought and am still regularly listening to ... nine months post-holiday, now!
This collection is replete with sparks of worship and awe. The festive jaunt embarks on a well-executed, majestic baroque piece, slipping into some flitty operatics. The mood shifts from aristocratic regalism to rich, emotive ethnicity in the climactic, folk dance-feel of entries 3 & 4. The transition between the two is gorgeous. {Who compiled this disc? Give that wo/man a raise! I have never heard such juxtapositional mastery on any professional compilation before. Chillout comp "masters", listen and weep!!}
Not only is this CD emotionally satiating with expert arrangement/transitions, it is well-balanced in style: from traditional to experimental, pointed to ethereal, instrumental to acapella ... voices male and female, youthful and mature. The frosty choral majesty of pockets No. 5 and interlude 9 through 13 bestow upon the listener such a sweet uplift into the spirit of praise. This inspirational thrust underlies a generous portion of this disc. For the first time in years I have decided upon a personal "favorite song", and that is #11. The "engagement ring diamond commercial" residue doesn't interfere too much with enjoying the effervescent, Vivaldi-ish No. 15. A few organ pieces are thrown in for good measure (the final, surprising one always evoking a good chuckle).
While there are certainly many standouts I listen to far more regularly than other ballads, this is a solid disc of excellent, well-executed music. My muddled blabbering on here cannot do this CD justice. This is one of the very best CDs in my personal collection. The Hyperion Label should be very proud of this release. If you are seeking a festive potpourri of aural exaltation, the charming incense of Christmas Throughout the Ages will not disappoint.
Incidentally, the track listing on Amazon is currently inaccurate - either that, or they have the wrong title and cover art for their product number here. Yikes! In the interim, go to the Hyperion-Records UK website to see the real list until Amazon rectifies this listing.

Probably of interest to purists & students.......2002-12-05
I sure don't want to imply that this is a poor album. If you like classical music, you'll find much to enrich your soul here. However, when one considers the huge choice of classical Christmas offerings, this one just doesn't strike me as being above average for the genre.
For a larger overview of great classical Christmas music, I think "Christmas Adagios" is much more satisfying. "Christmas With Chanicleer" and "The #1 Christmas Album" are other highly pleasing and comprehensive collections, each with more that is familiar and can be related with.
However, if you have the chance to sample this, do so. But I do advise listening and comparing with other sets before buying.

Widell Lays it down.......2004-03-26
Grab your beach towel, throw on your flip flops, and don't forget to put your Todd Widell CD on your ipod (the beach is no place for a CD player). This is the perfect CD to relax to, but don't pass of Widell's music as just laid back beach music. In his debut album he throws out so many things that are strong themes for younger people, struggling with relationships, flourishing in relationships, doing what you want to be doing with your life... These are just some of the many great things that are brought out in Late Night Saturday. Todd plays a little acoustic and a little electric. If you like Bob Schneider, Pete Yorn, Jack Johnson - even a little Ryan Adams then Widell is your man.
This album rocks.......2004-02-21
A must-have for your road trip collection. Awesome, sing-along, "this is my favorite song" kind of tunes. BUY IT!
Easy listening, relaxed - but there's more there.......2004-02-21
The combination of Todd's voice and the smooth guitar, great backup guitar and drums, provide nice easy listening music. The mood is a mix of folk and jazz, hard to describe, but kind of like when you come across a new Cabernet and are surprised how good it is, even though you've never heard of the label. My favorite song is Seven, partly for the great guitar and partly for what the lyrics mean to me. Give this album a try!
A Texas music fan
One Of The Best Kept Secrets In Music Today!.......2004-01-21
I go to college in central New Jersey. And if you're familiar with the area then you know of a certain "record exchange" that contains some of the best unheard/unknown music ever created.
My friend and I are in this "record exchange," searching through the budget CD's and he comes across Todd Widell's album, "Late Night Saturday." He'd never heard of it, and only bought it because the cover looked cool. We put it in the CD player on the drive back to school, and, oh man, we were swooned into this chilled out musical universe! The album is a gem! Great if you're into the whole "barbecue and sandals on a hot day" routine. Or, perhaps, if you're in the mood for a laid-back atmosphere.
I would highly recommned this to fans of Jack Johnson (I am a Jack fan, myself). It sounds just like Johnson (except a little less "beachy").
Todd Widell - Late Saturday Night.......2003-07-25
Todd Widell's debut effort Late Saturday Night is a must have cd for anyone who enjoys laid back, soulful acoustic rock that blends the sounds of Jack Johnson, Dave Matthews, and Ryan Adams while establishing his own unique style and voice. Late Saturday Night deserves a listen, especially the stand out tracks Left Unseen (#1), Open Your Eyes (#5), and A little Taste (#11). Although an unsigned artist, Late Saturday Night sounds like a disc full of radio singles and Widell seems ready to make an impression in the ever-so-boring world of music these days. Buy this disc now and tell your friends that you knew Todd Widell before he made it big.
