Film scorer Hans Zimmer, who helped pioneer the seamless technological merging of electronic and acoustic instruments in film scoring, has long had an interest in musical fusion. But in scoring director John Woo's action-sopped Tom Cruise star vehicle, Zimmer has concocted a wildly uneven stew of electronica, flamenco, rock, medieval, and world music that's about as subtle as Cruise's career ambitions. There are moments of surprising tranquility (Zimmer's duet with Heitor Periera on the Spanish-guitar-driven "Nyah") amid the pulsing beats and blaring samples, and even a few passages reminiscent of his other summer 2000 blockbuster, Gladiator. But as a musical stew, this one could use another dollop of simple meat and potatoes; it's certainly a long way from The Lion King, The Thin Red Line, As Good As It Gets, or any of his other best scores. --Jerry McCulley

Great.......2007-01-04

Great soundtrack overall with only a few shortcomings. It successfully mixes classic Spanish style with the Mission Impossible theme and Zimmer's traditional "grandiose movie epic" style.

The tracks Hijack, Seville, Injection, and Bare Island are, by far, the best. Among these Injection is probably the most well done and powerful. A good movie soundtrack, by my measure, must not only stand on its own as a good composition, but also bring the plot and emotions of the point in the movie it was played back to you. Injection succeeds at this in a way that few soundtracks can claim.

The only real failings are Bio-Techno (which serves more to grate on the nerves than sound like a well put together composition) and Mano A Mano (while not hard to listen too, it is something of a let down for a final climatic theme in the conflict between Ethan and Ambrose).

Despite these shortcomings I highly recommend the soundtrack for any fan of Mission Impossible or Hans Zimmer's work. 4/5 Stars.

Brilliant but..........2005-09-18

This score is remarkable. It manages to use so many cliched ideas and yet seems so original. Hans ZImmer has done a masterful job on creating such a blockbuster and enjoyable score. My favouriote tracks are "Injection", "Ambrose", "Nyah and Ethan", "Seville" and "Mano A Mano", most of which contain either wonderful spanish flamenco guitar played by Heitor Periera or the sublime vocals of Lisa Gerrard.
My only problem with this score is the MI:2 theme itself which reduces the tension and atmosphere of all the music it comes in contact with. It is one of the most revolting pieces of music I have ever heard!
But you can always do what I did. Rip the music off the Score and edit it not to contain the theme. :)

This is one of those cd's that you never seem to forget. this is my favourite score ever. it has a chilling sence of emotion and gives me goosebumps every time i hear it. close youre eye's and listen to mano a mano. it has an amazing sence of emotoin. anyone who is a fan of the movie or just likes scores should go and buy this masterpeice right now. it's that good!!

Different, fresh, and exciting Zimmer..........2004-01-02

For starters: I wrote a review for this score (along with numerous others) here on Amazon.com about 3 years ago, and if you look carefully, it's like #25 here... As I laugh (or cry) at my naivete (and poor, poor writing skills), I am also bewildered at how I actually gave this score 2 stars. My guess is I never went in with an open mind and gave it a chance.

This is a hugely entergetic score that offers a bit of everything and is probably one of Zimmer's best albums of the 90's. I despised the film when I first saw it (and haven't since), but nonetheless this is a great listening experience. It contains explosive synthesized action tracks like "Hijack", wonderful Hispanic flavored beats and guitar work in "Zap Mama" and "Seville", awe-inspiring choral work as heard in "Bare Island" (the first half of this track is probably one of the best pieces of music Zimmer has ever written), and some completely entrancing music heard in the likes of "Injection", which absolutely soars. In short, a totally diverse musical selection that sounds inspired and exciting.

These past few years haven't been very kind to Zimmer, and, now that I think of it, he hasn't really written this good 'a score since... Well, OK, Black Hawk Down, I suppose, but that's it (and even so, it didn't make for quite the successful album transition). Anyway, if you want some genuinely tasty Zimmer funk, dig in!

I was amazed when i saw the movie..but i was shocked when i heared these soundtraks!!the movie is so great..& hans zimmer also is a great composer that can touch our feelings with his scores...i like him so much!!

Composer/former Buggles keyboardist Hans Zimmer helped pioneer the fusion of traditional orchestral music with synthesized sounds that both seamlessly mock and supplement the traditionally acoustic. What listeners sometimes mistake for a symphony orchestra in full voice is often but shrewdly manipulated digital samples. Thus, this concert performance (recorded at the 2000 Flanders Film Festival) adds a welcome, truly organic dimension to the best of Zimmer's canon. The composer is featured as a performer (with Dirk Brosse conducting the fine efforts of the VRO Flemish Radio Orchestra), as are many of his frequent collaborators; Lisa Gerrard adds her distinctive vocals to the included Gladiator excerpts, while guitarists Pete Haycock and Heitor Pereira add their familiar flourishes to cues from Thelma and Louise and Mission: Impossible 2, respectively. Reworked music from The Lion King and The Power of One supplement the already familiar, but it's Zimmer's haunting, emotionally compelling "Journey to the Line" (from The Thin Red Line score) that is the collection's unlikely high point. --Jerry McCulley

Wing of a Film.......2005-02-14

This is one of my favorite CD's. My car was broken into and my CD holder taken from the visor. This CD is the first one I replaced. If you like movie music, this is the CD for you. From the drama and power of "Gladiator" to the African plain of "The Lion King", Hans Zimmer's music moves the heart. The added bonus of vocals from Lisa Gerrard (his collaborator on the "Gladiator" score) only make this more special.

unique live zimmer compilation.......2004-10-01

This compilation is an excellent primer for anyone wishing to sample some of Zimmer's signature compositions. If anything, it has more of a 'Zimmer and friends jam session' vibe than a true classical concert, but it still works rather well on CD.

The live versions of more 'serious' pieces such as "Am I Not Merciful" and "Journey To The Line" unfortunately don't quite live up to the soul-stirring intensity and clarity of the album versions, however they are still worth listening to if you are a Zimmer enthusiast.

It's the more lively pieces, like "Driving", "Thunderbird" and the hard-to-find "Rain Man Main Theme" which are the standout tracks, and full credit must go to the talented Pete Haycock and Heitor Pereira for their blistering live performances on guitar, which are full of energy and passion.

Indeed, perhaps the most unexpected treat on the CD is the version of MI:2's "Nyah and Ethan", which is a truly stunning arrangement of this spanish-influenced piece. The presence of extra stringed instruments which rise and swell with the melody gives this piece a much fuller, richer and epic feel.

Lebo M performs nicely on 'Lea Halalela', less memorably on 'Busa'; Lisa Gerrard gives an slower, carefully articulated vocal performance on 'Now We Are Free'; and the hard-to-find 'True Romance' theme rounds out the album.

All in all, a neat little album that's worth getting for Zimmer novices and fans alike.

Im george zimmer, no relation. this cd is good quality service, and a good price. if i had a warehouse, i'd fill it with his music. he should be president.

Not All You Could Hope For.......2004-02-29

If you're looking for a collection of Zimmer's work all in one place this is it. But that's all. These are not the best versions of his work you'll find and if you've grown to love some of his music from movie soundtrack CDs, you'll be disappointed. This is LIVE meaning each piece has several seconds of applause at the end. The arrangements are for orchestra so some of the studio techniques which give the music a kick are missing.

For some people, once they're used to one version of a song, variations will never do. If that's you don't waste time on this CD. I'm not such a person yet these live recordings left me cold.

The music for Rainman is a good case in point. I like that the arrangement, unlike the soundtrack CD, is a full 3 minutes of the piece (the soundtrack was split into two shorter pieces) but the music simply doesn't transport me the way the original did. There's less emotion.

If you're into Hans then this is still a must have but is not as satisfying as, say, a compilation of the original works.

MOVING.......2002-12-28

This CD doesn't grab you right away. But after a few times it's hard not listen to it. Very moving CD.

Two tracks I really like.......2007-07-21

The Mission Impossible theme is performed well.
The Fireball theme is actually much improved on this version. I prefer the orchestra and the vocals over the original.

Quantity Over Quality.......2007-01-15

As a musician myself, I know too well that one of the most important ingredients in ANY performance (live or recorded) is passion. The recordings here generally lack the same passion and sheer drama of the originals. Much of the instrumentation has been reduced to a cheezy, thin, plastic synthesized replica. The performances are simply a watered-down lackluster version of the classic originals. If it were not for the sheer volume of tracks compiled here, I would have rated the comp only "one star".

Definitely not as good as the originals. You'll probably notice the slight differences since it's stuff you saw and listened to every week or everyday in reruns growing up, but it's still an amazing collection.

Priceless, at any price.......2007-07-06

Years ago, watching peter Jennings cover the funeral procession of Princess Diana, my soul was captured by some hauntingly beautiful music that at times played in the background. So began my mission to find out what it was, who wrote it and how I could get it. After some correspondence with the network I was put in touch with the woman who "put together" that part of the programming. All she could remember is that it came from the movie "Black Beauty". THEN I found out how many versions of that had been made lol. With determination, I finally found it, and had a local music store order it for me.
There are no words to describe what this music does to me. I did try listening to some of the other tracks, but they didn't even come close. I rate this music right up there with the 1971 score for "Jane Eyre" by John Willams... and that's pretty high :D

I Love Danny Elfman's music so much that I have started my own collection of the soundtracks that he composed. For a while, I was trying to find the "Beetlejuice" theme song from the TV show, but thanks to this release, I finally have it!!! Keep up the good work Elfman!

Music For A Darkened Theater, Vol.2 is a great cd!!! I love all of the tracks on both cd's,but my fav. ones are the t.v. scores and the This Is Halloween demo!!! If you love this,then i recomend looking at all the actually albums on this cd and his other works!!!! good job,Danny Elfman.

Bring on Volume 3.......2005-05-04

The liner notes and "This is Halloween Demo" on this compilation are well worth the CD price by themselves. Danny comments on each of the tracks on the CDs which is a rare and ego-free look at what a composer thinks of his own work.

Edward Scissorhands is magical, Black Beauty is a rollercoaster of emotion, and Dolores Claiborne makes me want to find the nearest piano. This is not a "Most Popular" compilation, rather it aptly showcases Danny Elfman's (and Orchestrator, Steve Bartek's) brilliance and wide range of style.

Every suite has an Elfman signature, such as the layered complexity which never sounds overdone, or the use of a choir as an instrument.

This (and Volume 1) are examples of the work of a modern day composer who consistently stands out as one of the best.

If you like this and have the spare cash, grab the individual scores from some of the movies he has worked on, including "Men In Black", "Spiderman", "Batman", "Batman Returns", "Nightmare Before Christmas", "Edward Scissorhands", "Mars Attacks" and so many more.

This is quite an impressive list of today's modern rock heroes. Limp Bizkit incorporate a sci-fi space groove into their patented rap-metal and deliver the Mission: Impossible 2 theme, "Take a Look Around." Former Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell contributes the Led Zeppelin-influenced "Mission 2000." Pink Floyd's 1975 anti-record industry classic "Have a Cigar" is replicated and then augmented with hard-rock screams and heavy-metal guitars by the Foo Fighters and former Queen guitarist Brian May. Tori Amos's atmospheric "Carnival" nicely complements the straightforward hard rock of Buckcherry. Powderfinger's "Not My Kinda Scene" captures a lazy desert vibe, while Biff Butler navigates the generic industrial-metal wasteland with his band, Apartment 26. For over-the-top mayhem, Rob Zombie's got the market cornered with the sonically impressive "Scum of the Earth." only reason i bought this album is b/c i wanted the metallica song i disappear, but upon playing it all the way through i found out scum of the earth (R. ZOmbie) is one hell of a listen too...but the rest of the cd sucks balls.

A decent mission.......2006-05-12

After coming off the rush that is MI:3 I had to pop this CD back in my player and relive the days when this was all I listened to. I remember when this movie came out and I ran to buy the soundtrack, but you don't care about that so lets get straight to the track listing. The opening track 'Take a Look Around' which is the theme song done by Limp Bizkit is a decent track. Limp was on top of their game back in 2000 and so it's only fitting they rest at the top of the pack. 'I Disappear' is one of the worst tracks Metalica ever released...I mean, they repeat the same words over and over and the song has absolutly nothing worth remembering other than some decent riffs and a kick@$$ music video. Rob Zombie gladdly serves up some brilliant techno-metal with 'Scum of the Earth' and Butthole Surfers come back full force with 'They Came In'. Godsmack serve up another hit as does Apartment 26 with 'Backwards' which is one of the best tracks here. This song is what turned me onto this band...love them now. I'm not a huge fan of the Powderfinger song listed here, but I did check them out after hearing this album and their debut album is actually pretty good. The best track here though is Tori Amos' beautiful and titilizing 'Carnival' which is out of place yet so the right song to include as the album winds down. I love it! All in all, while it has a few rough spots, this is a great album to own and play over and over.

The mission was half possible.......2005-01-20

I got this CD because I wanted to figure out what kind of music I wanted to listen to, and basically discover more bands. I got this when I was in 7th grade I believe so that makes sense. Well what I got here was a mixed batch. Half good music, half crap. Most of the great music lies in the first half of the CD. Now I shall go into the classic breakdown of the record. What I noticed though was that barely any music from here was played in the movie at all (except the Limp Bizkit song)

1. Take a look around by Limp Bizkit: 7/10 In all honesty Limp Bizkit suck, and this song was played constantly throughout the movie, (which bored me bay the way) but this is definitely one of "Da Bizkit's" better songs.
2. I Disappear by Metallica: 9/10 A good song released by Metallica before they released St. Anguish.
3. Scum of the earth by Rob Zombie: 9/10 Great Rob Zombie song, but get his album instead.
4. They Came in by Butthole Surfers: 10/10 This is the song that really got me into the BHS, Now one of my favorite bands of all time, this song is the only song released from their Unreleased Album After the Astronaut so its quite nice to have it as a gem.
5. Rocket Science by the Pimps:8/10 A nice, cool song, but technically nothing special.
6. Have a Cigar by Foo Fighters and Brian May: 8/10A nice Pink Floyd cover
7. Mission 2000 by Chris Cornell: 5/10 I can tolerate this
8. Going Down by Godsmack: 10/10 GREAT!!!!!!
9. What U Lookin' At? By Uncle Kracker (produced by Kid Rock): 0/10 WOW BOTH THESE GUYS SUCK! Why they throw Rock's Name on there is simply for eye candy and it doesn't matter, Uncle Kracker is much like a one hit wonder.
10. Backwards by Apartment 26: 10/10 This song introduced me to Apt. 26 and they rocked. Their Hallucinating CD absolutely Rocked (Unfortunately they seemed to have broken up).
11. Karma by Diffuser: 7/10 it's a fun song but nothing more.

Tracks 12-16 I don't care to talk about or even title them because they are all 0/10!

So there you go. Normally this should earn a 2 star rating but I have to respect it because otherwise I would have never found out about Apartment 26 or been convinced to listen to more Butthole Surfers. Now as for you buying this record, I would suggest just going out and buying the CDs of the bands you like that are on here. If you are looking for a place to start in the world of music like I did, then I would avoid this as it is a mixed bag and no one here seems to like ALL the songs. Hope this helped.

Not the best MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK........2005-01-16

O.K. I bought this album about four years ago. To be honest, I don't like this one that much, to be honest, I don't like any MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK at all. I've got two soundtracks: this one and "BATMAN & ROBIN". After I bought both of them, I decided to stay away from these motion picture soundtracks.
The only good songs on this album are the first three and a couple more, don't worry 'cause I'll state them, the rest of them are pure garbage:

1.- "Limp Bizkit: Take A Look Around (Theme from "M:I-2)".- I think for everyone, this one is the best on this album. I'm not that much of a LIMP BIZKIT fan, but I like a couple of songs from them. But if you want to listen to this one, then I suggest you buy the album "CHOCLATE STARFISH AND THE HOT DOG FLAVORED WATER", that album is way better than this one and it includes on of their best dongs ever including this one.- 4/5.

2.- "Metallica: I Dissapear".- The other great song on this album, not that great, but one of the best.- 4/5.

3.- "Rob Zombie: Scum Of The Earth".- For me, the hardest rock song on this album. Better than "I Dissapear". I like this band more than LIMP BIZKIT. But if you want to listen to this one buy their album "The Sinister Urge". It is way better than this album.- 5/5.

4.- "Butthole Surfers: They Came In".- This song SUCKS.- 0/5.

5.- "The Pimps: Rocket Science".- O.K. Not as bad as others, but I don't like this one that much.- 3/5.

6.- "Foo Fighters and Brian May: Have A Cigar".- I don't like this one at all. Baaad.- 1/5.

7.- "Chris Cornell: Mission 2000".- This one sucks big time. One of the worst.- 0/5.

8.- "Godsmack: Going Down".- Not as bad as others either, but still I don't like it.- 2/5.

See. This soundtrack SUCKS. Now...speaking about the movie...I went to the movies to watch this one, it was full of action and smart scenes. I give the movie: 7/10. But the first one was...WOW...I loved it even though I had eight or nine years when I watched it, I understood it perfectly. The scenes are truly very smart, it has a great content and story, great dialogue and enough action, for me. I know it is abvious tha the second movie has alot more action and chases, but I liked the first better. I give Misson: Impossible a 10/10. I loved that one.
Remember...don't buy this crap, you would be doin' a very very big mistake like I did, if you only want this album because of the theme song from LIMP BIZKIT, buy the album CHOCOLATE STARFISH AND THE HOT DOG FLAVORED WATER instead, that album is way better than this one. If you only want this album because of ROB ZOMBIES's "Scum Of The Earth", which I love by the way, then buy the album: "The Sinister Urge". But whatever you do:

The soundtrack is better than the movie.......2004-02-07

I wasent a huge fan of the movie M:I-2, but the soundtrack is good. There are some great bands on here, including Rob Zombie, Metallica, Foo Fighters, Buckcherry, etc. There are even some non mainstream bands on here like The Pimps and Butthole Surfers(whens the last time you heard about em? Years ago?). Its overall a good soundtack, and even the Limp Bizkit song is decent. Not every song is great, but thankfully most of them are and there isnt really anything on here that is horrible. Some tracks are only found on this soundtrack too(like Metallica's 'I Dissapear'). This is a good soundtrack thats better than the movie.

Granddaddy of the Hollywood studios, Paramount Pictures is rightfully proud of its century of contributions to both American cinema and the art of film scoring. But the first disc of this 43-track double-CD anthology merely hints at the studio's musical peaks, blithely skipping through its first seven decades in just 17 tracks. Indeed, the package as a whole seems more interested in marketing its post-'70s catalog of hits and blockbusters than it does in paying real homage to history and roots. Even rarities like Double Indemnity and The Lost Weekend are served up via modern budget-line rerecordings, as is Ennio Morricone's epochal Once upon a Time in the West). Contemporary recordings of Aaron Copland's rare score to The Heiress and Franz Waxman's great Sunset Blvd. fare better, but soundtrack fans may miss the originals. The studio's rich pop-crossover successes in the '60s are documented via Breakfast at Tiffany's "Moon River" and excerpts from Romeo and Juliet and Love Story, while successful franchises like Star Trek and Raiders also get their due. Too often the '90s-focused second disc only underscores some uncomfortable trends in contemporary scoring--orchestral nervous tics punctuated by booming crescendos, treacly piano Muzak--and makes one wonder if the music of The Rugrats Movie and Lara Croft: Tomb Raider are really film music milestones. --Jerry McCulley

Great Movies have Great Soundtracks!.......2007-05-10

If you love movies and movie music, you can't go wrong with this two cd Paramount Anniversary set.

Only Disc 1 Is Worth Anything.......2006-07-19

Normally I have a lot to say in my reviews, but not this time. The main problem with this collection is that all the most memorable film scores are just on one disc, with the second used mostly to play out stuff from the last ten years that, really, musically isn't very memorable and only includes three pieces anyone will recognize just because, like the movies they come from, they're based on old TV shows - The Addams Family, Star Trek, and Mission: Impossible.

And that brings up another problem. With all due respect to the late Jerry Goldsmith, who has provided some truly great classic movie scores, was it REALLY necessary to include TWO versions of the SAME Star Trek march in this collection? This seems evocative of the milk-it-for-all-its-worth attitude Paramount has had lately toward its now-tarnished crown-jewel franchise. Where's James Horner's theme music from Star Trek II and III? If they're gonna put Star Trek on here twice, they should have provided a little diversity. It wouldn't have taken much, I'm sure.

I'm sure that Paramount's had other films with far more memorable music (even Harold Faltermeyer's Top Gun Anthem could have helped on Disc 2). This just seems like a lazy attempt at something that really could have been great.

More of a propaganda CD.......2002-10-30

There are some really great songs on this 2 CD set. However, those really great songs seem to be lightly interspersed amongst a large number of forgettable songs whose main purpose seems to be to remind you of those movies you enjoy(ed) so much.

It seems a little odd to me that out of 90 years of film making the most memorable scores have been largely released within the last few years. I was pleased to find themes from the Godfather, Indiana Jones and Witness. I was perplexed with the inclusion of songs from Rugrats, both Mission Impossible movies (one would have been more than enough) and Tomb Raider (memorable???).

This is my own personal bias, but I do prefer movie soundtracks that evoke a feeling of excitement. With this collection I just couldn't get excited. I kept finding myself being let down by songs that didn't in some way complement the preceeding song.

There are certainly some great tracks here, but overall I was disappointed. My advise would be to look elsewhere.

Great selection of Film Hits!.......2002-09-25

This one was a pleasant surprise! I thought- how could any CD that had "Baby Elephant Walk" be all that good? This one is. Lots of great scores- classics and a few hidden treasures. After hearing the beautiful title score for "Children of a Lesser God", I had to buy the entire soundtrack - very soothing. There are a few that may seem too overplayed ("Love Story", "Raiders of the Lost Ark",), but most are a welcome addition to any compilation. Try NOT loving "Building the Barn" from "Witness" or the "Hymn to the Fallen" from "Saving Private Ryan". Hours of great listening.

Older recordings, main themes only.......2002-08-27

This is a great album concept, but I really wish Paramount had re-recorded these scores as they deserve to be heard. The tracks range from 1944 to the present, and the older recordings sound just like the cleaned-up older recordings that they are.

I would also personally have enjoyed more "secondary" music themes (otherwise it becomes like reading book summaries that always only quote the opening paragraph), and I could easily have done without the "pop" tunes (like Baby Elephant Walk and the Rugrats theme). In fact, it would have been very nice to listen to an album comprised of tracks chosen for their strong musical value rather than apparently for their box office and/or hit song popularity. But, to be fair, that may be precisely what draws some people to this CD set.

Film score music constitutes the single most significant body of classical music of our time. I hope some of these tracks will entice listeners to buy entire soundtracks and listen to some of these works as a whole.

Since I received my cd, I have listened to it quite often. I like it even more than the soundtracks to the more recent "Mission Impossible" films! It really swings!

I would say that i am fanatic with everything related with the words "TV SERIES","SIXTIES".
This album is a great example that we had great TV SERIES with great music scores produced in the USA -not only in UK.
Jazz music,lounge music,even classic music mixed in a brilliant way in this O.S.T.
In this cd you can hear the original and the best by far,famous version of MISSION IMPOSSIBLE theme.
It is a cd that you will hear from beggining to end,again and again.With how many albums that are produced these days can you do the same?A very few i pressume.

A Great Jazz Album.......2002-06-28

I was turned onto this album while in college in 1969. I've been a jazz freak since childhood and played music professionally since I was 14, and this just blew me away. Yes, this is a soundtrack album, but it's also a great jazz album. Best of all are the absolute heavyweights on the session. Though only some of the players are listed on the cover, I have seen a more complete listing...the best of the best. This big band (with strings and things, like sitar and harpsichord)includes two of the greatest jazz deities, Bud Shank (formerly with Kenton, Shorty Rogers, Shelly Manne ad inf.) on alto and flute, and Stu Williamson (formerly with Herman, Kenton, Frank Rosolino, Shelly Manne, etc.) accompany a band of Olympian musical peers. They play with a combination of musical artistry and screaming precision that I've only heard from assemblies such as Shorty Rogers' Giants, another all star team that included some of the same players here. Though their solos are often short, there's no mistaking the sound of Bud's flute and alto (theme from Mannix, Daktari, etc.) and Stu's trumpet. In fact, it was hearing Stu Williamson for the first time,(Shelly Manne & His Men Vol.4) at 15, that made me forever obcessed with continually improving my improvisation. Though I have always been inspired by the phrasings of Jack Montrose, Art Pepper, Bob Cooper, Bud Shank and Charley Mariano, I was amazed, once, when listening to recordings of myself, to realize how much Stu Williamson has influenced my playing. Possibly the greatest valve trombone player, I consider him the greatest trumpet soloist I have ever heard. They should hve let him do more. Borrowing from the best is the highest compliment you can give.
The main title theme, which is in 5/4 time, offers the composer, himself, Lalo Schiffrin, plenty of room to blow a nice harpsichord solo.
Along with the hard driving main and ending themes and the jazz/rocker "Wide Willy" are two incredibly melodic classics. "Jim on the Move" is a smooth groove, the main melody a blend of Bud Shank's flute and Williamson's muted trumpet. Too bad the solos are so short.
So melodic that it's a tear jerker, the theme for Barbara Bain's character, Cinamon Carter, is "The Lady Was Meant to be Loved". Strings and flute play the initial melody, with Bud Shank (Ah! That sound of "Mannix") picking it up with just the right amount of swing. This a great haunting melody that you can't get out of your head, like Russ Freeman's "THe Wind", Shelly Manne's "Parthenia" and standards like "Yesterdays" and "What's New?"
Possibly the best piece of all is the theme for Martin Landau's character, Rollin Hand. A hard driving jazz waltz, the initial melody is played by a brace of french horns, and it still rocks all the way to the end. Even the string section cooks. The drummer, throughout the album, never gets in the way, but he is constantly there, driving the band like a mad bus driver, going down a mountain, with no brakes and a major caffeine buz. With not a single solo note on this cut, he still drives this waltz with a passion, all the way to the tasty soundrack fade to strings ending.
Though not laced with the greatest number of solos, the pure music, melody and drive make this one of my favorite albums.

Worth the wait.......2002-04-16

Although it took someone awhile to get around to re-issuing Lalo Schifrin's classic soundtrack album from the hit 60's TV show (the first of two ST albums he recorded), the wait was worth it. Here we have not only the great title tune, but alot of great incidental music as well, which Schifrin culled from the background scores he wrote for the weekly adventure. A special bonus are the extra tracks from the followup album, "More music from Mission: Impossible."

Where to find more music by the "No Government" singer.......2005-09-23

To the reviewer who said you'll look in vain for other music by her: not so (if you work at it). She did an album before this and (by 2005) two albums after. And appeared on other albums.

You can get the original, rawer, drum n' bass version of the song "No Government" from the ablum "Now is Early" and several compilations several places, but this album's version is the best one unless you like drum n' bass, and the vocal here is smoother and more "produced".

Lots of Nicolette's music other places has very nice vocals, but the jarring high and varying tempo music with complicated beats behind her voice are distracting unless you ike that sort of thing.

For people who like "No Government" and who don't like fast drum and bass beats with their smooth singing, you've pretty much limited to the songs she sang on Massive Attack's albums. Start with "Three" on the album "Protection".

Good Elfman Tracks.......2005-07-27

I have to warn everbody, you would be much better off buying the original Elfman score, and not buying this version.

However, this CD is the one I got stuck with, and there are a few 5 star songs on the 3 star CD.

First of all, Main Theme, this is a great Techno/Remix version of the Mission Impossible Theme, definately a keeper.

Second, Impossible Mission, is a great, funky militaristic track. It features some cool synth, sweet percussion, and a very cool, atmospheric sounds.

Third, Claire. This is without a doubt one of the top five saddest most beautiful songs ever put on plastic. It rates as the best song on the album, an Elfman classic in the tradition of his Burton scores.

Fourth, Trouble, this is an awesome action song that reminds one of Men In Black. The strange whistling, percussion, brass, and trembling strings really pull you in to the action.

Fifth/Mission Accomplished, this is yet another main theme remix, very listenable, but not as good as the rest.

As for the rest of the album, don't even bother with it.

Mission Accomplished!.......2004-07-01

I liked the movie and the Mission: Impossible theme song so much that when I found this recording in the library while ostensibly doing research for a project, I grabbed it right away and popped it into my CD player. Here is my song-by-song breakdown:
Mission: Impossible Theme: CLASSIC. WONDERFFUL. Just as good as (if not even better than) the beloved "James Bond Theme."
Spying Glass: A weird and wonderful song from Massive Attack. It's wonderful if you're just chilling out, especially after a long, hard day. (Unless you're one of those people who need to burn energy to blow off steam; it is kind of hard to dance to and completely out of place with sports.)
I Spy: This song and its theme of cold-blooded revenge sent shivers down my spine. I liked that. If you don't like your music unsettling, skip this track.
Impossible Mission: Score track. Good, but not a standout.
Headphones: I liked it, as it was soft, ethereal, and, well, I happen to like Bjork.
Weak: Alanis Morissette-style rocky relationship rock with decent vocals. (In case you hadn't noticed, unless she sings softly, Ms. Morissette sings like a dying cat. No offense to her fans, of course.)
On And On: I can't be a fair judge of this one. I can't sit through the uber-mellow intro and I hate having to fast forward.
Claire: A hauntingly pretty score piece.
Dreams: A very nice song if you have, unlike me, heard it less than fifty trillion times.
You, Me, and World War III: A very interesting song. I am not sure what it is about, but it fascinates me enough to listen to it again and again.
So: Maybe I'm a sap, but I like hearing about "some kind of tenderness in your laughter."
Trouble: Wonderfully dramatic score piece. Sort of a mash-up between ordinary spy music and Darth Vader's theme song.
No Government: A spacy, trancy song with tantalizing vocals and even more tantalizing ideals.
Alright: Pretty decent rock song, if awfully generic.
Mission Accomplished: Sort of like a really good remix of the original theme song.
Since there are so many different points of view around, I can't say "this CD is a gift from the heavens" or "this CD sucks like a vacuum cleaner" conclusively. All I will say is what I think: if the soundtrack was meant to be a good, solid collection of great songs, they accomplished their mission!

STOP! This is NOT what you are looking for........2004-06-25

This CD has a handful of the most horrid attrocities ever attemped to be called "music" that I have ever had the unfortunate priveledge of listening to. The first time I saw this movie, I was very young and enjoyed the soundtrack. I recieved the cd as a gift. THIS IS NOT THE MISSION IMPOSSIBLE SOUNDTRACK. It is Music from (COUGH like 3 songs COUGH) and music "inspired by" the film. Now incase you are wondering what kind of music this movie would be likely to "inspire" stop yourself right there and let me tell you the answer. GARBAGE. There is music on this cd that's so mind curdlingly horrid that it makes you want to take two pencils, stick them up your nose, and slam your head down on the desk.(!!!!) It's that bad. Get the REAL soundtrack. I hope you enjoyed my warning, now I have to pull these pencils out of my brain cavity.

A great surprise.......2004-02-25

I think this CD was the first I ever owned. When I first got it, I listened to the theme music and skipped most of the rest. Years later, when I pulled it out and listened to the whole thing, I realized what I had been missing, and went out to find more music by these artists.

The two versions of the M:I theme are great--one is right from the movie and the other is an electronic version. Both are way, way better than the new theme from M:I-2. Then there's a neat, stylish song from Massive Attack. Pulp's "I Spy" is a passionate anthem about revenge--turn up the volume and shout along. Danny Elfman does three other instrumental tracks on the album: "Impossible Mission" is suspenseful but subdued, with lots of interesting percussion; "Claire" is slow and haunting; and "Trouble" is as exciting as all-get-out. Bjork's "Headphones" is still one of my favorites, and the strangest song on the album, really quiet and dreamy. "Weak" is a decent rock song, and "On and On" is sad and mellow rock. If you haven't heard "Dreams" before--well, of course you've heard it before, but it's still one of the best songs ever. Two more great songs are "No Government", with its mysterious vocals and catchy groove, and "Alright", which will raise anyone's spirits.

I don't know what business a lot of this music had appearing in a Mission: Impossible soundtrack, but it works. Go out and buy it today!
