Common wisdom holds that debut albums have an autobiographical slant, so it's hard to believe that Justin Timberlake's first non-'N Sync outing doesn't purloin much of its subject matter from the singer's breakup with Britney Spears. Half the songs are about the abrupt severing of a romance and the singer's rather hard-hearted stance. Sure, he may have been the wronged party, but that doesn't excuse the inflexible emotional posture revealed in "Cry Me a River," "Never Again," and the sniping "Last Night." But Timberlake apparently thinks it does, since he christened his record Justified. He also seems to enjoy boasting about the swinging single life, with many of the songs here almost gratuitously lascivious. Asides like "I could think of a couple positions for you" from "Right for Me" and "Better have you naked by the end of this song" from "Rock Your Body" will catapult the singer right off Radio Disney. But Timberlake shines when he moonwalks into more adult terrain, turning his back on the innocent dance pop that put 'N Sync on the charts. With the help of hip-hop producers Pharrell Williams and Chad Hugo of the Neptunes, Timbaland, and P. Diddy, Timberlake has turned out a remarkably cohesive and sophisticated slice of club-friendly R&B. --Jaan Uhelszki

NSYNC BROKE THE ICE FOR JUSTIN. THIS CD PROVES HIS CAPABILITIES. I LOVE EVERY SONG ON THIS CD. MY FAVORITE IS "CRY ME A RIVER". I THINK IF JUSTIN WAS TO PUT OUT 10 MORE CDS THIS ONE WILL ALWAYS BE HIS BEST. GOOD WORK JUSTIN.

4 out of 5 stars Still Bangin'.......2007-04-27

It's 2007 and Justified still gets considerable play in car. This CD rocks from track 1 - uh, skip tracks 10 and 11 - to track 13. Take It From Here is my absolute favorite song on this disc. The production is sharp, each song has a groove of its own and it's lyrically slick. Hey, Cry Me River was the break-up anthem of that year! I'm a Justin fan - you either love him or hate him.

5 out of 5 stars You've got to give Timberlake credit, he really knows how to sing.......2007-04-22

Justin to me represents the quintessential pop star/singer..
the guy really knows how to sing.. I respect that and I think
Rock Your Body is one of the best R&B tracks anyone has created..
well.. in a really long time. He's a great singer. I listen to him
because of his voice

A crazy experiment in music-industry manipulation, the KLF remain one of dance's more groundbreaking acts. Having already scored hits as the Jams and the Timelords, Bill Drummond and Jimi Cauty christened the KLF with Who Killed the Jams? Though they were originally considered part of England's acid-house scene, the KLF's high-energy mix of disco-diva vocals, rapping, breaks, and samples was truly club-friendly pop. The White Room contains three of the group's greatest moments, the top 10 hits "What Time Is Love?," "Last Train to Transcentral," and "3 A.M. Eternal." Amid their success, Drummond and Cauty retired from the music industry, deleting their back catalogue in the process. The White Room is a fitting (if somewhat short) epitaph that stands the test of time. Its futuristic musical themes are somewhat silly, but genuine musicianship makes the songs themselves quality fun. --Liisa Ladouceur

5 out of 5 stars Great Band.......2007-05-16

This has always been one of my most favorite CDs. I was leaving in France when it came out. I was always disappointed that it was not as popular here in the states.

3 out of 5 stars Not a bad influential acid house album, but it's so cheesy and unaccessible that most non-acid house fans simply won't like it.......2006-01-04

This was a very influential acid house album in its day, but it hasn't aged well at all. It's not terrible, but most people simply will hate it. It's DEFINITELY acid house - you either like it or you dont (though some songs contain some interesting instrumentation ideas. As a whole, though, it's hard to listen to and very much a guilty pleasure). I can't imagine that most people would have fun dancing to this as that's essentialy all it's good for. I'm pretty confident in saying the only song most people will enjoy is the first one (which really starts about a minute into the song - it's still a VERY guilty pleasure). The rest are pretty hard to listen to, even IF parts of the songs are interesting (usually the electronic bits). I would've given it 2.5 stars, but its historical influence pushes it to a 3. Not recommended unless you're interested in the history of acid house or if you're just a die-hard acid house fan.

Highlights include:
"What Time Is Love? (LP Mix)"
"Make It Rain" (certain parts of it)
"3 A.M. Eternal (Live)" (certain parts of it)
"Church Of The KLF" (some of the electronic parts are interesting)
"Last Train To Transcentral (LP Mix)" (parts of it)
"The White Room" (SMALL parts of it)
"No More Tears" (it's not bad)

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest music industry jokes has turned into a truly classic LP ..........2005-08-14

If you ran into James Cauthy & Bill Drummond today, they would probably tell you how much they hated the KLF (which stood for the Kopyright Liberation Front). After releasing "The History of the Jams a.k.a. the Timelords" LP on TVT (which features sample theivery that rivals the Beastie Boys' "Paul's Botique") and realising a #1 hit song ("Doctorin' the Tardis"), he two musical pranksters wanted to release a pop album, just to see how easy it is to win a #1 single. And you know what? They did just that.

If one listens to "the White Room" today, it's obvious that they were intentionally trying to make the most ridiculous album they could think up of. (Recall, they even released a book before this album's release entitled "The Manual: How to Make #1 Singles With the Least Amount of Effort"). This is a full-on yet masterfully constructed prank. Just listen to the lyrics of the version of "Justified & Ancient" that closes the LP (the one WITHOUT Tammy Wynette): "They're justified & they're ancient / And they know what time is love / Rockman, he's just made of bricks / and Kingboy loves his screws / The JAMS don't need no master plan / To do whatever, whatever they can / Oooh nah-nahnahnahnah" This is not high art by any means. Yet, the more one sees that it's a joke, the funnier the album gets.

But the music? For just about being 15 years old at this point, it holds up REMARKABLY well. Opening track "What Time is Love?", after the brief mellow chorus of "Justified & Ancient", a sample of MC5's "Kick Out the Jams" kicks in, and then full-on techno keyboards start up (which sounds like the theme that guys who made the "Mortal Kombat" theme blatantly stole from). It's a dance-floor grinder in the highest order, and harder than any of the songs on the album.

"Last Train to Transcentral" continues on the electro-dance-burner trend. "3 A.M. Eternal," though good, isn't even one of the best singles on the album. Though the radio singles are no doubt fascinating (and hearing Tammy Wynette, a country starlet, sing jibberish like "All Bound for Mu Mu Land" is very amusing), songs like the title track get lost in the mix. And "The White Room" is a fantastically catchy piece of work, featuring mellow almost monologue-ish verses (which somehow sound like Chris Martin nowadays), and an irresistable oboe (!) rythym line. Even the 4-chord keyboard melody of "Make It Rain" manages to make its catchy way into your head. And to balance it all out, the mellow "Build a Fire" makes surprisingly effective use of slide guitars for the penultimate chill-out song on the LP.

It's an odd contradiction of an album. For something that was made as a total joke and only to make money, it holds up to the test of time amazingly well. Sure, they may be waiting for World Peace before they record again ... but, for all we know, this could be just another elaborate joke ...

5 out of 5 stars Definitive dance music.......2005-06-14

It has to be said, although many have done so already, that the KLF's 1992 LP The White Room is probably the best dance music album ever recorded. Splitting its nine tracks between chart-friendly techno and blissed-out ambient, the disc covers a diverse range of styles which serves to make it all the more essential.

Bill Drummond and Jimmy Cauty were obviously well ahead of their time, and their popularity in the UK proves that (only five singles released, charting at 5, 1, 2, 2 and 4 respectively). They disbanded on 5 May 1992, and took their entire back catalogue with them, which included the legendary Black Room LP.

The highlights on this album are obviously the three dance singles, of which Last Train to Trancentral is the best. But the other cuts, such as Justified and Ancient, shouldn't be ignored.

This album is such a masterpiece, I've had to give it five stars-- the only time I've ever done so.

5 out of 5 stars Great Dance Classic!.......2005-01-20

Hey
the packaging is very missleading! I thought it was going to be two cds but then discovered that they added the single to JUSTIFIED AND ANCIENT onto the White Room Album which i thought was so cool! So i don't have to have two cds and keep trading.
I bought this cd for the JUSTIFIED & ANCIENT song but then found out that there are some great dance tunes along with some slow grooves. BUILD A FIRE is a great song to chill to. The other singles WHAT TIME IS LOVE?, 3 A.M. ETERNAL, LAST TRAIN TO TRANCENTRAL are very good and bring me back to the days in Bismarck. So if you remember when you first heard these song then they'll take you back!
My love though is JUSTIFIED & ANCIENT
STAND BY THE JAMS 7" (this is the radio edit and is only 3 min long)
STAND BY THE JAMS 12" (this is a longer version with a break that i think is very cool a guy comes on and explains about the Justified and ancient traveling in their ice cream van very cool)
ALL BOUND FOR MU MU LAND (this has Tammy singing the Chorus but Maxine Harvey sings the lyrics. This is 7 min long also. Very cool)
LET THEM EAT ICE CREAM (this is like a dub version it has the guitar form the song and the hype men talking but no words just the music)
All in all i love this cd!

5 out of 5 stars All Bound For Mu Mu Land!!.......2005-02-03

Hey i remember hearing this in an arcade the mall and i used to play it out! I think some kids even got mad but I didn't care. What i really loved about this song was the bass in the bridge part. That booming beat was infectious with me and i still can't get over it. If you ever heard this song, hear it on a quality stereo with subwoofers and TURN THAT MOTHER UP! cause this song should be played at MAX! YEAH!
I also thought it was cool that Tammy Wynette sang on it. Very cool move for her. I never really understood the song and still don't but man when i hear that bass line it just takes me back!
I've never heard a song like this one since. And probably never will. RIP Tammy and ROCK ON KLF!

5 out of 5 stars The last and oddest hit by Tammy Wynette with the KLF.......2004-03-16

In an interview, Bill Drummond of the KLF said he was very much influenced by U.S. country and blues music as he grew up in England. His favorite performer was Tammy Wynette.

Now ol' Bill Drummond didn't exactly crank out country OR blues -in fact he created some serious punk/acid house and later dance music. Here is where the story gets sketchy. Either Bill Drummond called Tammy Wynette, or Tammy Wynette's manager called Drummond.

Regardless, what happened was a collaboration that had implications of the most bizarre kind. Tammy Wynette, one of the greatest American country singers ever performed the vocals on one of the most seriously silly of all dance songs: "Justified and Ancient".

Just who are these Mu Mu's? And why do they drive an Ice cream van?

Regardless, Tammy Wynette found her largest popular audience in performing this song and sadly died soon thereafer. However, we can look upon this song with fondness as a performer who wanted to reach out beyond her roots and her bread and butter - to take a chance - and WHAT a CHANCE it WAS!

Thanks for the fun Tammy!

Justin is THE MAN when it comes to music and style. He has it all: a pretty girlfriend, platinum sales, critical RESPECT, and so forth. I'm lovin' this album! It's the greatest record of 2002, and maybe even of all time.

    1 out of 5 stars Horrible songs.......2005-06-25

Buying this album was no doubt a total mistake. This music is nothing like the stuff my mom always played, which was popular when she was my age, and I don't even like it. None of the songs are enjoyable, and some even creep me out. Here is a song-by-song review, so you'll know what I mean.

Senorita - A little annoying, but not the worst

Like I Love You - Very jumpy. Not my kind of song.

(Oh no) What You Got - Too many electronic sounds and no real instruments. Not the kind of thing I enjoy.

Take It from Here - This is the best song on the CD. It's actually pretty good for the kind of song it is. But still nowhere near as good as my mother's songs!

Cry Me a River - I don't know what to say about this song. My brother hates it, so I guess I have to hate it too.

Rock your Body - The beat definitely makes this my last choice of music to listen to.

Nothing Else - I don't like the high-pitched sounds in the background during the chorus.

Last Night - This track perfectly illustrates an example of not-so-nice music.

Still on My Brain - I have tried to enjoy this song. But I couldn't. Especially since it also has a title that I don't like very much.

(And She Said) Take Me Now - Worst song on the album! This song really creeps me out!

Right For Me - Second worst song! The least musical of them all!

Let's Take a Ride - I don't know...the tune is bad, but I think it's the jumping beat in the background that is the worst part.

Never Again - I was surprised when I heard this. This song is totally different from the others! Good for what it is, but not GOOD good.

    2 out of 5 stars MJT........2004-06-11

I've never been one to jump on a bandwagon, so maybe that helps to describe my initial loathing for this album. However upon listening to this album, my leap from the band wagon just seemed to be easier.
After working in a record store for 2 years and having this album shoved down my throat day in day out since its release, my contempt has only grown.
I find this album to be offensive, (to music, mostly), overplayed and over gratified. I think this album has no depth, or anything that makes you want to stay up all night listening to it, unless you're on drugs, or horribly drunk and wanting to "get it on" with your ugly roommate.
However I do give props to JT for successfully ripping off everything Michel Jackson has ever done, and some how claiming it for his own.
And, I do have to admit the one song with male/female parts makes me jump around and dance like an idiot (providing I'm one drugs or booze).

1 out of 5 stars Out of Sync.......2003-12-24

Justin honey, stay with what you know works N'sync works even though those song were fast wearing, this CD is pitifulk an absoulute disgrace I mean was he beat with the Michael Jackson stick or something? I admire your fellow bandmates at least they know in their heart that their white this music is purely saddening a complete waste of $20

    5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-08-12

An AMAZING album, something for everyone. Like I Love You, Last Night and Rock Your Body will certainly drop a beat and are great cruisin' tunes, but for me the album is all about Justin's break-up with Britney, and the heartfelt lyrics behind Still On My Brain and Never Again - anyone who has ever had their heart broken will understand everything he says. A mature record from a boy with the voice of an angel. BUY.

            5 out of 5 stars He's definitly 'JUSTIFIED'.......2003-03-03

What can I say? Justin Timberlake's most anticipated album of 2002 is definitly one worth the wait. The musical content is remarkable. Every song tells a story, that you just can't help but dance to. Some songs even make you cry!. Not many people can go from pop to urban music. But Justin Timberlake definitly did an amazing job. This is one of very few albums that you don't have to keep pressing the "next" button. You actually like every song. The producers in the album did a great job. I tip my hat off to Timberland, The Neptunes, and Brian McKnight. They have done Justin Justice. Which makes him TOTALLY 'JUSTIFIED'.

            5 out of 5 stars wow!.......2002-12-28

Justin Timberlake has certainly been Justified...
His album is fabolous, though he loose's point's with line's like "your out of this world but your not green" he gain's them all back with songs like: 'Cry Me A River', 'Last Night', 'Never Again ', Rock you body' ,and 'Like I Love You'....etc
Go on with you bad self Justin
Nsync was holding you back (so was Britney)

            5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2002-12-03

The Edition of the CD that came out in the UK, also had "Worthy Of" and I would have to admit that this album is absolutely great. Justin makes the transition from group member to solo star effortlessly! The album, in some respects, still maintains the NSYNC elements but there is still 99% just Justin. This album, is definitely worth a listen, by men and women, old and young! Justin manages to transcend from pop to R&B with ease which is a great combination.
