Turtle Music and 2 Zevon Songs.......2001-11-15

Part of a 5 CD box set with almost everything good by the Turtles in their pre-TurtleMothers period, this CD also features 2 Warren Zevon composed songs -- "Outside Chance" and "Like the Seasons" Both are excellent and a must have for any Zevon fan.

When I first heard "Happy Together" I thought it was a great song and had to get the 45. I flipped over the record to at least listen once to the flip side and fell in love with "Like the Seasons." It was a good match for a 45, two songs about losing a girl that you know you will never get back again.

Enjoy the collection for what it is, a fine collection of great music that was not a chart-topper.

This cd just isn't like the others. It did not fit my tast and I think I wasted my money on it. It is the worst of the turtles.

Wonderful collection of early works for the saxophone.......2004-02-26

On his latest release that was actually recorded in 1998, Claude Delangle has chosen to play several early French pieces all written in the 19th century when the saxophone was stirring a lot of excitement in composers all around Europe, for this disc, particularly in France. On this record, he plays soprano, alto, tenor, and baritone. Keeping with the title of the album, Delangle plays on an historic alto saxophone made at the turn of the century (around 1899) to Adolphe Sax's specifications. What amazed me about this is that first of all, he keeps it perfectly in tune, not an easy thing to do, and second of all, he still has that very colorful French tone that we have all come to love about him. For the pieces that are not for alto, he plays on current Selmer instruments. The performances are top notch and played with the style of the time of the compositions, with a little bit of contemporary French stylistic ideas of vibrato, phrasing and tone color. This is definitely worth picking up as Delangle plays the works of Singelee, Demersseman, Savari, Genin, Klose, and Chic masterfully. Highest Recommendation.

Turtles Concept Failed.......2004-04-03

I assume this album was originally meant as some kind of parody of the "Battle of the Bands" concept. Maybe an excuse for covering different styles that would not be logical to touch on an ordinary album-concept.

The idea may be good enough on its own; the big problem here is that very few of these songs are good enough to stand alone, which make them pretty uninteresting here 35 years later.

Fortunately there are a few exceptoins. I somehow always found "Chief Kamanawanalea" pretty funny. And of course the McGuinn/Clark cover "You Showed Me" which has almost become a pop-classic.

"Elenore" is a good pop song, nothing more. The same can be said about the bonus tracks "She`s My Girl", another hit-single from this period, and "Sound Asleep"

Except for the mono versions of "Elenore" and "You Showed Me" the rest of the bonus tracks are pretty poor.

I would recommend a Tutles best of compilation instead of this tiresome original.

A Great Battle! And The Winner....By A Knockout...The Fans!.......2002-09-26

The Repertoire issue of the CD has the same lineup as "The Turtles Present The Battle of The Bands". However this German Import version of the CD has endowed us with 8 great bonus tracks--including "She's My Girl", "Umbassa The Dragon", "Sound Asleep"-a great single, and "The Story of Rock and Roll".

This album is great--hands down. Is it the best? It's a tie between this one and "Turtle Soup"--the group's 1969 Swan Song.
The sound quality is well above average stereo. "Oh Daddy", and "Buzz Saw" are great songs, and show the group's versatility. They came a long way from "Happy Together" and "She'd Rather Be With Me"(although those are great songs as well--and not to be overlooked by any means). The group's cleverness is apparent in songs such as "Food" and "I'm Chief Kamanawanalea (We're The Royal Macademia Nuts)", and they pay their homage (an understatement) to the Beach Boys with the rockin tune "Surfer Dan" (the flip of "Elenore"). To Quote the Turtles--"The Last Thing I Remember", I was a Turtles fan--"The First Thing I Knew" was--I love this album. Enjoy it!

Buy it before it's GONE forever!.......2002-08-31

Let me first say that this is definately the best concept album AND Turtles album ever released. The Repertoire release of this album contains a great selection of bonus tracks (and the only compact disc appearance of "Umbassa And The Dragon"). However, the tape-drag at the beginning of "Oh, Daddy" and the fact that the stereo tracks are more "centered" (not as hard left/right as the way they are found on the Laserlight and Rhino multi-disc sets) stop this from being the definitive CD version.

I haven't heard the Sundazed version yet to see if these problems were corrected. All nit-picking aside, I hear Repertoire is out of business and any Turtles fan would be wise to pick this up while there's still a chance.

The greatest clarinetist ever, his technique is mind-blowing, the man has no break. there are endless pages of sixteenth notes and not one flaw in the playing.
