Like a mink draped over mahogany, Diana Krall's luxuriously supple alto adorns the vintage songs of romance and longing found on Love Scenes with a palpable aura of glamour and late-night cool. Her ostensibly effortless command of phrasing and intonation, whether the mood is seduction or a sweet sassiness, further fortifies the opinion that the Canadian vocalist-pianist possesses one of the great female jazz voices to surface in the late 1990s. Augmented by spare but skillful instrumentation from bassist Christian McBride and guitarist Russell Malone, Krall sustains a largely quiet (though hardly sleepy) ambience throughout the CD's 12 selections, from Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean (How High Is the Sky)," which she also uses as a showcase for her touch at the keyboard, to Gershwin's "They Can't Take That Away from Me." Her swing is artfully subdued ("All or Nothing at All"), and her wry, expressive approach to "Peel Me a Grape" is pure charm. Yet Krall shines most luminously on languid gems such as "I Don't Stand a Ghost of a Chance with You" and "Garden in the Rain." Anyone in search of an album ideal for watching city lights at 2 a.m. should keep Love Scenes in mind. --Terry Wood

Love everyone of her CD's, this one is my reference CD for listening to Speakers...
Track 10 is one of the best upright bass track I have ever heard.
My favorite engineer, Al Schmitt. What else can I say...

it's good you can under stand what she is saying that in it self is great
JUST THE GREATEST!.......2006-11-02
Diana Krall is the singer's Singer. Plain and simple. More than this, however, the Lady knows her way around the 88's, and puts together the best vocal and piano work since Jeri Southern. Of course Diana Krall is her own singer, but she brings up memories of the likes of Miss Southern, Julie London, April Stevens, and many other Greats from the past. Many of them are gone; we are SO lucky we have Diana Krall. This CD is among her Finest! If YOU like the Best, buy it and treat yourself to a true Artist in every sense of the word!
Great Krall Interpretations of Love Songs.......2006-06-03
Diana Krall proves why she's such a phenomenal jazz singer on this CD.
Her interpretations of Peel Me A Grape and You're Getting To Be A Habit With Me highlight her smoky, understated, but very attractive voice. The entire CD is outstanding, and gives Krall a chance to further impress jazz music lovers, who have made her one of the most loved jazz singers of our generation.
Love Scenes is a winner Don't miss it!
Love Scenes by Diana Krall .......2005-10-12
Diana Krall's voice is very relaxing. When you listen to this CD, have a drink in your hand, sit back and just breathe. It's even better if you have someone you love to lean against on when you're listening to this. But either way, it's a great CD that I think any jazz or adult contemporary listener would love.

Culled from the Columbia Records reissue packages, variously released under the multivolume Quintessential Billie Holiday umbrella, this package goes straight for the love songs, the heart of Holiday. Ranging from such playful lyrics as "Let's Do It" and "Them There Eyes" to such essential Holiday as "You Go to My Head," "The Very Thought of You," and "Easy Living," this set is guaranteed to keep the home fires burning brightly. Lay this one on your lover next Valentine's Day. As was so frequently the case with Holiday, the ensemble support is impeccable, including many of the swingers from Columbia's Greatest Hits package. The bonus here is Count Basie on piano, leading his swinging big band on "They Can't Take That Away from Me." --Willard Jenkins

Classic!.......2007-01-11
Anybody who loves jazz and the blues cannot be without this Billie Holiday CD. I love it. I can listen to it all day. It's a pleasure to hear great jazz and such an incredible voice.
WOW!!.......2006-11-09
This cd was the first Billie Holiday I ever purchased. WOW! She is the greatest, bar none! EVERY serious lover of music needs this work to add to their collection. I had no idea how special she was and how timeless her work. I am a fan for life.
Great Collection of Billie Holiday Songs.......2006-10-06
There are so many fabulous reviews for this CD and I have to agree with them. I've been a Billie Holiday fan for years and own many discs of her music, but I find myself reaching for this one a lot. It's a great collection of songs and her voice is so sweet and true here. She's in top form and the arrangements on the songs are all excellent. Whoever put this CD together knew what they were doing. This is definitely Billie during the earlier part of her career and there's a real lightness to this music. (Her later music is great too, but very different.) Most of the songs on this CD are classics and even if you're unfamiliar with her, you'll probably still recognize many of them. There is some crackling background noise on some of the songs, since they were recorded back in the late thirties/early forties, though it's not that bad and most of the time you barely notice it. Some of the stand outs are "You Go To My Head", "The Very Thought of You", "Let's Do It", "The Way You Look Tonight", just to name a few. I think this would be a great introductory CD for someone who is curious about her and would like to hear some of her music.
Oh, Billie! HOW DIVINE !!!.......2006-08-25
This CD is an excellent collection of great songs performed by the incomparable and legendary Billie Holiday. Billie could conquer any song--from the most vulgar to the most sublime with an electric performance that rivals the best singers of the 20th century.
The CD begins so beautifully with Billie singing "All Of Me" and continues on into "You Go To My Head" by Gillespie and Coots. As with the rest of the songs on this CD, there is some background surface noise as these recordings by Billie were made in the 1930s and the very early 1940s. Nevertheless, there is a certain romantic style to each recording that leaves the listener wanting more after every track.
There songs on this CD are truly timeless; Billie sings such standards as "You Go To My Head," "The Man I Love," "Let's Do It," "The Way You Look Tonight" and "The Very Thought Of You." Don't play this CD for the first time without having time to relax and enjoy it with a glass of your favorite wine--you'll want to listen to it again after you've played it through because it's that beautiful and special.
The liner notes include an essay by Delfeayo Marsalis, the song credits and the dates Billie recorded them, a beautiful black and white photograph of Billie singing at the microphone on stage and the lyrics to "You Go To My Head" and "Easy Living."
I highly recommend this CD for fans of Billie Holiday, classic vocals and the standards of the entire 20th century. Although it is only one CD, it still is a very good representation of Billie's talent. It makes a great starter CD for people who want to find out more about Billie before they purchase box sets, too. A terrific experience to be enjoyed! SMILE
Fine CD.......2006-04-28
This CD is a beautiful selection of classic Holiday. I really enjoy Holiday's voice. It is so natural and simple. Buy it. You won't be disappointed.

A bit sad, but absolutely beautiful.......2007-06-09
Nancy Wilson puts such emotion into this music it's almost as if she's been there, done that. She has other recordings of the title song, "Guess Who I Saw Today" but this is the one that pulls on your heart and makes you dread hearing the sadness of that last line. Nancy Wilson is a gem and you can feel her brilliance in this album.

Absolutely Beautiful.......2006-12-21
I heard the title song 'Guess Who I Saw Today'like fifteen years ago and remembered being totally blown away by the song-but then being a young twenty year old couldn't get myself to actually go and purchase a Nancy Wilson CD. How un-cool. But the song haunted me and recently I decided to give this CD a try...I'm SO glad I did. Nancy Wilson is a class act who has produced wonderful music. This is the CD to settle back with a nice glass of wine and let you mind flow with the music. This may have been my first Nancy Wilson CD but it certainly will not be my last.

Album Description
"The Book of Love" is the story that singer Cheryl Bentyne reads so eloquently on her latest Telarc release. Like love itself, the album follows a trajectory that encompasses an array of emotions - joy, sorrow and every subtle shade in between. Borrowing from a variety of sources, including a few well known selections from the great American songbook, the journey begins with the initial encounter and ends with the inevitable heart-wrenching goodbye.
Customer Reviews:
Songbird extraordinaire.......2007-07-27
As a jazz buff, I had very little exposure to Cheryl Bentyne other than through her stellar work with Manhatten Transfer. Her performance in " The Book of Love" is a revelation on many levels. This collection of beautiful ballads is one of the most poignantly romantic recordings I have heard. The lush arrangements of husband/keyboardist Corey Allen and the backing of the Prague Symphony Orchestra are magical. Ms. Bentyne's vocal quality and range are near perfection--her phrasing and enunciation are models of clarity. She is coquettish without being cloying. Listen to her alluring treatment of Let's fall in love and you too will get weak in the knees. Her classic treatment of "Be My Love" is exceeded only by Wayne Johnson's beautiful acoustic guitar and a jewel of a solo by cellist Armen Ksajikian. The high water mark of the cd in my view is "You taught my heart to sing". This romantic ballad is perfected by Bentyne backed only by husband Corey Allen's piano. The feeling and emotion between the two is palpable. Bentyne and her arranger husband have indeed made beautiful music together. Highly Recommended!
Heavenly.......2006-12-22
I thought Cheryl Bentyne's "Let Me Off Uptown" was one of the top 10 c.d.'s of 2005. Ditto this one viz. 2006.
This is a c.d. of oft-covered standards, all love tunes, organized into "chapters" of various aspects of love (Longing, Flirtation, Lust, Love, Joy, Disillusion, and Loss). All well and good, but what makes this c.d. is the arrangements. These are arrangements that go straight to the heart and soul. They don't pass go; they don't collect $200; they just stick with you on the first and last listens.
There are so many good things about this c.d. that it would make too long a review to catalogue and explain them all. Just consider: The gorgeous cello solo of Armen Ksajikian on "Be My Love"; the equally gorgeous acoustic guitar solo of Wayne Johnson on the same tune; yet another magnificent solo, this one of violinist Charlie Bisharat on "I'm a Fool to Want You"; the totally cool backup of Mark Kibble and Alvin Chea of Take 6 on "The Book of Love"; the sweet duet with John Pizzarelli on "Blue Moon"; the swinging, bluesy bridge on "Let's Do It"; the simple, straight reading of "You Don't Know Me" that brings more tears than the usual overwrought versions of this tune; the gorgeous orchestral harmonies in "You Go To My Head"--not too lush, just right; and probably others I'll catch upon certain relistens to this album.
And then there is Cheryl Bentyne. Why is she never mentioned in critics and readers' polls? Is there a more honey-voiced non-classical singer in the world? I guess the reason for the relative non-recognition is that she is a key voice in the Manhattan Transfer, and the Transfer gets more than its share of accolades. Okay; but since when can a great ensemble singer not be considered a great solo singer as well? Her voice is as smooth as a hot knife through a warm pad of butter. Outside of nat King Cole, I can't think of any singer who sings more smoothly than Cheryl Bentyne.
Bottom line: should you be so lucky as to finagle some total hottie into a hot tub, with the candlelight, bubbles and champagne thing going on, this is the c.d. you want to put into your player. Accept no substitutes. RC
Another great performance.......2006-11-21
I have grown very fond of Cheryl Bentyne. Her voice is so malleable. It can be sharp, high, smoky, playful and quite clear. Her previous CD's are all very very nice, as is this one.
This appears to be her second themed CD, the first being 'Moonlight Serenade'. With guest vocalists John Pizzarelli and Mark Kibble & Alvin Chea of Take 6 fame, she has offered a timeline of the stages of love.
The song choices are very well thought out for the theme and follow well. Starting with 'You Don't Know Me' and finishing with 'Goodbye' and a reprise of 'Book of Love'. This version of 'The Book of Love' is not the doo-wop version. It is a very romantic version written in 1999... very nice fit to this theme.
After 'You Don't Know Me' comes 'Be My Love', both sung in a soft, enchanting manner with great orchestration in the back. 'Blue Moon' is next with John Pizzarelli joining in. Nicely done, slow, romantic version.
Then comes 'Let's Do It', and old Louis Armstrong song that is difficult to make interesting at times. She takes it nice and languid, using her voice to give variety within the music. Nicest version of this song I've heard yet.
'Don't Say A Word' follows... slow, romantic with emphasis on piano in the background. Then 'The Book of Love' with some great, standout vocals from part of 'Take6' harmonizing nicely with Cheryl's voice.
The tracks that follow, 'You Taught My Heart To Sing', 'You Go To My Head', 'Cry Me a River', 'I'm a fool to Want You', 'Goodbye' and 'The Book of Love/Reprise' and all well done. The tempo is easy, soft and mournful at times.
This is a great, romantic CD to put in for those moments of reflection or meditation. No bounce or upbeat here, but certainly not boring in the least.
Cheryl Bentyne is making her own way as a great vocalist sans The Manhattan Transfer and I certainly hope she continues her voyage.

Best Martini Music Ever.......2007-03-08
I recently discovered Jack Jones, his voice is like velvet - perfect for a cocktail party or if you are having a date over for a romantic dinner. Every song is excellent - initially I bought it for wives and lovers - but was amazed by the rest of the CD. Perfection.
Wives & Lovers/Dear Heart Jack Jones CD.......2006-03-20
I bought this originally for the Dear Heart album, and in my opinion, it is the better of the two. The Dear Heart album has a better song choice, although I understand that Wives & Lovers won a Grammy for Jack Jones. Jack Jones is very talented and I thoroughy enjoyed listening to his beautiful, melodic voice.
**********.......2005-10-14
Jack Jones at his very best. What amazes me is how people can say "He sounds better today than ever"!! Have any of the people listened to this CD?
You, the night, the summertime..........2004-01-11
Hey, little girl... Dang, every line just burns its way into your consciousness. This is a classic Jack double set (one of several) and contains many unforgettable songs.
While the Greatest Hits compilation is superb, there are so many stunning songs on this set that weren't even 45s, that you simply cannot get your head around how utterly brilliant this man really is.
It's not just that he has a golden, smooth smooth smooth voice, with an almost operatic range, it's that he is never afraid of taking chances with his phrasing and delivery, which makes for some very exciting performances. What Led Zeppelin's Robert Plant did for Rock vocals, Jack did for the crooners. He just transformed the entire concept.
Added to that, he recorded some of the greatest songs ever written, and did it HIS way. Just pick a song off this powerhouse double set and you'll see what I mean... even the songs off Wives And Lovers alone... Wives and Lovers (of course) Toys In The Attic, Angel Eyes, the haunting Charade and Nina Never Knew, Summertime Promises, his stunningly original cover of Fly Me To The Moon... you get the idea.
This man is one class act, and this is an essential purchase.
The Necessary Jack Jones.......2004-01-01
At the time of this writing, there is still no complete CD collection of Jack Jones' classic Kapp recordings; the only way to get these indispensible albums is on these English imports, each of which features two of the original albums on one CD. I can't stress enough how essential these are to anyone who wants to hear the voice of the century. These are the original, enduring Jack Jones recordings, his lasting contribution to music, the most perfectly enunciated, crystal-toned pieces of heartfelt romance imaginable. Jack Jones is indescribable--he reached perfection so soon, he had nowhere to go beyond that, and has been experimenting for years. Trust the perfect original. The Kapp albums, two of the very best of which are these, are the greatest "pure music" recordings ever made by a pop singer. I love them, and believe you will as well.

If you're looking for beautiful love songs sang by an old pro,
this is it. Englebert has his own style and was true to form
in this cd. I'm not a real fan of his but I bought this as
a gift for someone who was and I ended up listening to it
because of the selection of songs included. If your an
Englebert fan and also if you're not, this will please. My only

Culled largely from Engelbert's fabulous collaboration with arranger/conductor Bebu Silvetti, the 1995 "Love Unchained" album, which has a gorgeous, lush orchestral backing for Engelbert's timeless, extraordinary voice, this is a marvelous collection of mostly classic songs, with choice picks for me being two of my all-time favorite melodies, the beautiful "Love is a Many Splendored Thing", and "Unchained Melody", both sung to perfection by Engelbert. He is 59 here, and there is a world weariness and a mature huskiness added to the glorious sound of his voice, when compared to his hits of the late '60s and '70s, and a depth of heartfelt emotion that goes straight to the heart.
Bebu Silvetti is well known in the world of Latin music, where he creates his instrumental magic for superstars like Luis Miguel and Rocio Durcal. His arrangements are a fantastic blend for Engelbert's style, who with good reason has earned the title of "The King of Romance".
This CD has 9 of the most tender and loving of the 12 songs found on the "Love Unchained" CD (missing from the CD are "Answer Me", "(Sittin' on) the Dock of the Bay", and the upbeat "Such a Night"), and the final track, "There's No Song Like a Slow Song" is from Engelbert's 1996 CD, "After Dark", and is a lilting number with a contemporary country feel, and a spoken verse that is a reminder of that other King of music, Elvis.
This compilation is a winner...perfect for lovers, candlelight dinners, and those ever young at heart. Total playing time for this nicely priced CD is approximately 37 minutes.
Power.......2004-11-14
The power of Engelberts voice is incredible and excellently displayed in this collection of songs. He never ceases to amaze me with his unequaled vocal stamina. Highly recommended! Buy it NOW!
Love Unchained Part Deux.......2002-05-03
Mr. Humperdinck is my favorite singer, therefore I may be biased toward his work. This CD however is cut straight from "Love Unchained" with the exception of the last track, so I feel this review is really about a compilation of classic vocal magic. Englebert sings in three octaves and never seems to run out of voice. I have read where he has been called the voice of the century. Pound for pound you will agree with this assessment after listening to this disc.
Doing justice to the classics.......2002-02-09
Engelbert Humperdinck's long career - now in its fifth decade - is largely down to his versatility as well as his enduring voice. He has retained the impressive vocal range that he first displayed in the 60s with hits including Release Me, The Last Waltz and There Goes My Everything. His loyal fan base continue to buy concert tickets in droves, and he has continued to record new albums at a rate of at least one per year during each of the past 35 years, a statistic that none of his contemporaries from the 60s can claim. Still recording new and original material, Englebert occasionally returns to his musical roots to record classics from the 50s and 60s - the content of this recently-recorded album is one such project. A long-time fan of Nat King Cole, Engelbert's emotional performance of Cole's Too Young is a worthy tribute. Another highlight, and another triumph, is Smoke Gets In Your Eyes - this song is one of popular music's most demanding, requiring superb breath control to sustain the repeated crescendoes that feature throughout the song. Engelbert delivers quality performances on every song, equalling (and sometimes surpassing) the standard set by the original artists. An essential album for Engelbert fans and anyone who enjoys classic 50s and 60s love songs.

Great Combination.......2006-08-18
Ella's incomparable voice paired with the legendary song-writing talents of the musical masters on this album makes for a combination only rivaled by champagne and strawberries, peanut butter and jelly, the black and white cookie - well, you get what a i mean: a timeless classic to be enjoyed by all. Whether the song be light-hearted (Beginning to see the Light) or heart-breaking (Solitude), Ella emobdies the essence of the words and sounds so delicately in her voice. Her notes are effortless. What saddens me, however, is that the musical ideas that Fitzgerald obviously puts forth in this compilation is lost on the modern jazz singers of today. Very rarely do you find a singer with a similar thoughtfulness for the lyrics. If you are looking for a nouveau Fizgerald, look to "Siren Songs" by Gretchen Lieberum. Like Ella, Gretchen is delicate and thoughtful with her music, and performs with an air of sophistication highly uncommmon these days. Pair this compilation with Siren Songs and you'll have an evening filled with timeless classics.
Magic!.......2005-12-07
This is the first of Ella Fitzgerald's CDs I ever owned: it was a gift from my girlfriend. My "musical life" has never been the same since. This is the kind of music that makes me wonder how I could have lived so long without. Ella's voice is magic. All of the Best of Verve Songbooks CDs are pure magic. If you like old-fashioned jazz, and you like great voices, you should buy at least 4 or 5 of Ella and/or Louis Armstrong's CDs. Just listen to the audio samples on Amazon.com, and you will find out why, in case you don't know how great they were. These guys were fantastic artists. They should have had 500 more years to live on this planet, and make it a better place with their voices.
Ella As Smooth As Honey!.......2004-03-30
Another great Ella Collection! This one has a few semi- hard to find tunes from her work with Duke Ellington that are among the disc's best. These are "Love You Madly", "Solitude",and "Prelude to a Kiss". Finding the best of Ella is not easy, given her vast legacy and super- high quality, but this is a good place to start. And since it's a mix of various Ella "Songbooks", the mix of composers like Duke Ellington, Mercwer, Gershwin, Arlen, and Porter is a nice touch too!
Ella is the best!.......2003-11-25
The songs on this one are just as wonderful as the other "song books".
For anyone that has never listened to Ella. This is one to try.
Ella is perfect - as always.......2002-01-07
To me, Ella is one of those one-name superstars. The purity of her voice and her ability to interpret a song makes her simply the best. This collection has some beautiful selections and some amazing performances from Ella. This is by far the best album of hers out there and it's always in my CD player. I can't recommend this selection strongly enough.

Recording for more than 30 years, Maria Muldaur has moved from jug-band music to Tin Pan Alley pop, blues, and jazz. It is the latter two genres that have most defined her output since the 1980s. A Woman Alone With the Blues, from 2003, was Muldaur's tribute to jazz vocalist Peggy Lee, and she's followed that with this set of 10 thematically linked odes to love. It's a testament to the subtle dramatics of her voice that she is equally convincing when singing of love on the rise, or of its melancholy demise. Smartly sequenced and warmly arranged, the disc moves gracefully from the sunshine to the moonlight. From dreamy anticipation to heartache, this is a portrait of the varied and elusive faces of love. --David Greenberger

Sensuous, smart and sexy...WOW!.......2004-12-07
I bought this CD after hearing 'Baby, you're my destiny'- I'm in love and you know how that is, every love song makes sense and appears to be written just for you.. This is such a great collection of songs- she is alternately exuberant, wistful, sexy and rueful. This CD showcases this womans fantastic voice- the quality of the musicians on all the tracks to me are flawless. A great big wonderful CD.
In the Mood.......2004-10-06
Maria Muldaur's creative streak continues with "Love Wants to Dance." The incredible thing that Muldaur makes seem so effortless is making this diverse set of songs sound like they belong together. She sets the mood and draws us into the mood with her. From the opener, "The Lies of Handsome Men," her sultry wistful vocals pulse the emotions out of the lyric, "Somewhere in the corner of my mind, I'm not a fool completely blind. Even though he's hooked me on his line, I find the pleasure's been mine." Benny Goodman's "If Dreams Come True" begins to sound bluegrass with Joe Craven's violin before its uptempo swing gets our feet to tapping. The 7-minute "Love Dance" is as soft and swaying as any torch song that has been lit in the last century. "Come share your secret dreams with me," Muldaur invites on the sparse "Isn't That the Thing to Do?" Bob Dylan's "Moonlight" is remade so completely that one could swear he must have been one of the 1940's best composers. Taj Mahal's "Baby You're My Destiny" is an upbeat thrill as Muldaur croons, "You really mess with me." Harold Arlen's "I've Got a Right to Sing the Blues" is drenched with Jim Rothermel's sexy sax swagger as Muldaur's vocal interplays with the sax in a flirtatious sadness. "I found a shirt you left behind, hidden between some clothes of mine," she again croons with more sad sax weeping gently on "The Strong Stand Alone." Sheila Smith's bright upbeat "Everyday's A New Day" concludes the set. Muldaur continues to push the boundaries by discovering and reinventing excellent material that is enhanced by the singer's vocal embrace. Enjoy!
Muldaur Delivers Another Winner!.......2004-09-14
Maria Muldaur's latest offering, "Love Wants Dance," follows in the footsteps of her wonderful Peggy Lee tribute "A Woman Alone With The Blues." Here we find Muldaur as seductive and sultry as ever. She sings with an ease and carefree quality that reminds one of her earlier works, in particular "Sweet and Slow." Here we find the artist moving in a territory where at this point in her career she excels and cannot be mimicked or really outdone by any other singer.
There is particular care taken in the choice of material and its unified presentation. Muldaur and company move easily from the works of Harold Arlen and Blossom Dearie to songs of Bob Dylan, Taj Mahal and Brenda Burns as if they were all writing with the same pen. It's a great achievement to coherently put together such material without a seam! But then again, Muldaur's been doing such seamless work for years.
It's hard to pick a favorite here since every cut is exquisite, but I would single out " The Lies Of Handsome Men," "Isn't That The Thing To Do?" and "I've Got A Right To Sing The Blues" as particularly special. But it's also hard to not note Mahal's "Baby You're My Destiny," Burn's "The Strong Stand Alone," and Sheila Smith's "Every Day's A New Day."
Muldaur's band here is right in touch with the singer. Danny Caron's guitar work is splendid, and it weaves in and out in a languid style that suits Muldaur's voice and temperament perfectly. Jim Rothermel is also to be commended for some fine clarinet and sax work, especially on "I've Got A Right..."
"Love Wants To Dance" is as fine a recording as Muldaur has ever put out. While its not "Sweet Harmony" or "Richland Woman Blues," it is every bit as good as those recordings. One just has to remember that Maria Muldaur comes in many styles and colors and that from recording to recording she'll throw you a curve ball every time!
