Some Great Songs.......2004-03-21

This band broke up a few years back. I think they were Georgetown University graduates. They played in a bunch of bars in DC and then spread out traveling around. They produced three really quality songs "Katie's a No Show." "Disappointing Mary," and "Back on Earth."

If you like Sister Hazel, Dave Matthews, Matchbox Twenty, and this genre of music, you will enjoy the "Back on Earth" CD.

We used to have a great radio station here called XFM that played cool indie stuff and this late-night disc jockey named Nigel of the Airwaves spun the hell out of "Eternal Love," the second best tune on this CD, IMNSHO ("Peacetime [Reprise]" is my fave). When I first heard it, I was snogging my boyfriend in his beat-up Citroen on the third floor of the Croydon Municipal Parking Garage (for the best view of the South Bank at night) and I got so excited that I nearly impaled myself on the leathercoated gear shift. When Nigel O.T.A. announced the name of the band, I jotted it down on the nearest scrap of paper -- a Frobisher & Gleason raspberry-flavored ice lolly wrapper, to be exact -- and returned to the task at hand. My boyfriend didn't understand why I was so excited -- he thought it all a bit "twee" -- but, then, he prefers acid garage, electronica, all that stuff with drums that go "poo". The other man in my life -- my Dad (an ex-hippie and professor of cybernetics at Leicester Tech) -- has no such pretensions. After I got the Valentine Smith CD from Amazon.com and put it on endless "repeat" on my CD player (where it displaced my beloved copy of Stealers Wheel's "Greatest Hits"), Dad overheard the jangly strains of "Lord, She Bores Me" and said he hadn't heard such mindbending sounds since the days he wore flowered pants and grooved under vomit-inducing strobe lights at the UFO Club. Personally, Valentine Smith remind me of more modern music, especially the Creation bands. Say Teenage Fanclub on a quiet day, or St.Etienne on a loud one. Except that Valentine Smith place far more importance on song craftsmanship than any other contemporary band I can think of. Part Jimmy Webb, part Elvis Costello, their transcendent melodies transport you, while their incisive lyrics make sure you don't float too far up, up, and away.

So, I bought the CD and it was really good.At a different time in my life I would have flipped but today I am craving a new sound. It's not their fault, the songs all have a chorus that stick in my head like so many Paul Mcartney tunes.And the guitars,bass,and drums all make music instead of pounding out a mindless grooooooove.But,ya know I am a bit done with this kind of"smart" pop songwriting style, Two Turn Tables and a microphone.Embrace the future boys harmony and melody are a thing of the past.I am on to your manipulative ways ..get the song out of my head!!

I stay up late on sunday nights, its my special time to decompress,light candles and open my self up to the only independent DJ in New York City.Surprise me ,turn me on,educate me,I yearn and many times he does and I am.In my bath, my husband is with the kids and it happens.I have heard them before on these nights but not for a while.Valentine Smith have remained a wonderful,mysterious,surprise.I dont know what they look like, I have never seen them,and until I searched for them on Amazon I did not know how to buy their record. It arrived in my mail today.I will be saving it for Sunday night..with my glass of wine..and supreme expectations.

Best band I've seen in years.......1999-03-07

Valentine Smith is simply a great band. All of their CDs are worthwhile, but "Valentine Smith" is their best and most consistent. They are frequently described as a pop band, but they rock much more than that label would indicate. There is not a weak song on the CD. They play well, sing well, and write intelligent, funny songs with great melodies. They are also a superb live band. They should become hugely successful, if in no other way, by word of mouth alone.

I drove about 150 miles two weeks ago to see these guys at Fez in New York City. I had never seen them before and was so moved by this record that I made up my mind to make this trip.I guess that the fact that I am writing this is example enough that I was terribly excited and moved.On this CD Valentine Smith create a world with a pop melodisism that stays in my head the way that a great Monkees or beach Boys song always have.Any way I'm a big fan and wish for more people to enjoy this record.

Local talent.......2003-08-08

I must admit first off that I am a brand new fan of Lylah since seeing them play at the Warped Tour here in Las Cruces, NM. I have only lived here in Las Cruces for three years and never experienced a local band with amazing talent before. Their songs are very mature and the content of the lyrics are written very well. I am also wishing that Lylah would release a full-length CD soon to better display their incredible talent. Buy the CD and help spread the word and support our local band.

DreamRock Beginning.......2003-03-22

The Lifeless Valentine Ep, shows how much lylah has evolved over the past three years, from norman's beginnings with the bands swim and supersoul (check these bands out) his musical ability has come a long way. I live in las cruces, New Mexico which is more or less where the band is from, el paso being just a few minutes down the highway, that is where they perform most. I have seen the shows and own everything from the swim cd to supersoul- to the many lylah ep's over the last three years and i have to say by far this is the strongest i have ever heard them. I would just like to see a full length album from the band with full cover art, lyrics and all. Check out other lylah related bands on mp3.com. (swimmusic) (supersoul)-- these are the search keys.
