What fun! This soundtrack of the film adaptation of the Broadway musical overflows with glossy, ol' fashioned '60s-style pep. It won't win any awards for innovation, but it may well be one of the most feel-good releases of the year. While not quite as super-energetic as the original Broadway cast, the new crew ain't too shabby: Nikki Blonsky delivers as Tracy Turnblad and Zac Efron (High School Musical) makes for a devoted boyfriend, and the supporting cast gleefully embraces the show's silly-but-generous spirit. John Travolta (who gets to utter the particularly ironic line "it's been years since someone asked me to dance") goes drag as Tracy's mom, Edna, while Michelle Pfeiffer's slight stiffness is appropriate for her uptight character, especially on the cha-cha "(The Legend of) Miss Baltimore Crabs." After Mama Morton in Chicago, Queen Latifah puts in another brassy turn as Motormouth Maybelle ("Big, Blonde and Beautiful," which is then reprised by Travolta and Pfeiffer). Energetic, Fun Album.......2007-08-01

Though it may be slightly inferior to the Broadway Cast Recording, this album of "Hairspray" is spectacularly tuneful. The singing, with the exception of Michelle Pfeiffer (who does act wonderfully in the show), is top notch, especially Nikki Blonsky and Queen Latifah and the music, of course, is about the catchiest composed here in fresh new arrangements. Still, the talent of the Broadway cast was more consistently wonderful. But that doesn't stop one from enjoying the greatness that is this album. Some songs just make even those who can't dance want to, like "Good Morning Baltimore" (1), "Ladies Choice" (6), "Welcome to the 60s" (8), "Run and Tell That" (9) and "You Can't Stop the Beat" (16). Other highlights are "I Can Hear the Bells" (5), "Without Love" (14), and the best song of the CD Queen Latifah's superb "I Know Where I've Been" (13).

Awesome Soundtrack!.......2007-07-31

This soundtrack is one that is extremly well done!! I usually steer away from soundtracks because they don't capture the magic that is the movie, but after I saw this movie I decided to take a chance on this one! This is definitly one of the few of the soundtracks I have heard that is truly as good as the movie!

The tracks to hear are Welcome To The 60's, Big Blond and Beautiful, and Ladies Choice! Those songs have so much power and on different levels it it truly awesome!

This is an outstanding CD from an outstanding musical film!

I totally loved the movie. "Hairspray" makes a seamless, wonderful transfer from the Broadway stage to the silver screen.

The soundtrack perfectly captures the film, including all the music and snippets of dialogue, creating a complete satisfying experience.

It is impossible to overstate what a find Nikki Blonsky is. Watching her is like shaking a bottle of Pepsi, and waiting for it to fizz. Bubbly is an understatement. Her vocal performance matches her screen performance beat for beat.

"Good Morning Baltimore" launches us into this very specific (60's, working-class, Baltimore) era, using hysterical lyrics and time-capsule-like music.

The music of "Hairspray" sounds like every single early 60's pop song you can name off the top of your head dumped into a blender, and then poured over a CD. Motown, Brill Building, surf, Spector, Stax, Sinatra, girl groups, doo-wop...seriously...it's all here.

It's like one day,you unexpectedly have the best chocolate milk shake you've EVER tasted. You had tons of 'em before, but MAN was that one good!

Same here. Instantly familiar yet wholly original and of the utmost quality. The tunes are more infectious than head lice at preschool. The lyrics are smarter than you are.

Anyways...back to Blonsky. Her showcase songs, "Baltimore" & "I Can Hear The Bells" , along with her cast pieces like "Without Love" and "You Can't Stop The Beat" reveal her to be a world class entertainer. Her character's personality spills out of your speakers like the foam of a root beer float filled too full.

The entire cast is a dream. James Marsden (Cyclops? Really? Is that you?) fully imbues his plastic Corny Collins character with a winking shine; he knows he's considered superficial but he also know he isn't.

Zac Efron will get all the tweens/teens aflutter, but he's great. Honestly. "Ladies' Choice" positively thunders out of my car stereo, and is merely one of several, cardiac-arrhythmia-inducing energizing moments during the show.

Queen Latifah, as usual, is nothing but pure class. She as regal as her name. Powerful vocals without being overpowering.

And what about Travolta? He's terrific in the movie. As Tracy's mom, Edna, he goes for something different than the previous incarnations. Before, they were clearly big men in drag. Loud ad abrasive. Here, Travolta goes for a different tack. It's clearly Travolta, but his Edna has this pig-eyed sweetness, this down-trodden nobility, that I haven't seen before. It works like gangbusters. His vocal input here is limited, and that's perfectly OK.

Michelle Pfeiffer represents evil in this movie, and it comes across in her "Miss Baltimore Crabs" song. Listen, I love Miss Pfeiffer. She's my favorite. I'm her number one fan. Love her to death. I would lie down in front of a moving train for her.
But she's positively horrible here...and in the best possible way. She is so good at being so bad, her input here is unpleasant. Which is a roundabout high compliment. I never have to listen to her songs again. I'll just go back to "Ladyhawke" or "Baker Boys."

The REAL find her might be Elijah Kelley. During the film, you can't take your eyes off of him. On this soundtrack, he soars. Every time he shows up, you KNOW it. "Run and Tell That" is frankly amazing. It moves and grooves with such delightful energy, you cannot avoid doing that weird looking dance you do while sitting in your car with your seatbelt on.

The best moment, of dozens, is "You Can't Stop The Beat." When I say people were dancing as we left the movie theater, that is not hyperbole or exaggeration. It is fact. It is what people were doing, filing out the exits.
They were dancing.

To this song.

An unbridled tornado of musical electricity, "You Can't Stop..." shake you from your very foundations, finding some deep, repressed desire to shake your booty that may have been hidden long along, and brings it, uncontrollably, to the surface. I felt like somebody clamped a car battery to my tail bone. The ensemble singing will lift you off of your chair (I'm warning you: pull over if you listen to this in your car), and the band exhibits such crisp, tight musicianship, coupled with a healthy, wild abandon...it is futile to resist.

The ending is simply thrilling with the stop-start chorus and explosive band breaks.

I'm spent just RECALLING the experience!

One other thing. Definitely check out the last song on the disc. "Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now" is a song from the original show that didn't make it into the film. Rikki Lake (from the original non-musical film), Marissa Jaret Winokur (the original Broadway Tracy Turnblad) and Nikki Blonsky come together to do a hilarious, fun, riotous version of this very funny song. There's a brief, hysterical vocal cameo by...well...I'll save THAT for you to discover on your own.

A higher recommendation does not exist. Thanks for taking the time to read this...

Bagpipes, a song written as the soundtrack to a Michel Gondry music video, Patti Page's musical shadow, and Jack and Meg co-narrating a scavenger's rummages: It must be time for Icky Thump, the many-flavored riposte to 2006's Get Behind Me Satan. I really wanted to like this. Jack's fine. Meg needs more practice. Good vocals, better guitar, but very poor percussion/rhythm. I find myself skipping forward a lot, and then ejecting within minutes.

I'd been thinking of picking up a White Stripes CD for some time and finally got this one. I love it! Several songs have clear Led Zep influence (my favorite all time band). The things that Jack White does with his guitar are incredible.

The Traveling Wilburys were one of the few supergroups that lived up to their promise, because they didn't try to. Things started inauspiciously when George Harrison, needing a B-side for a 1988 single, called in friends Jeff Lynne, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, and Roy Orbison for assistance. Two albums later--the second without Orbison, who had passed away shortly after the first was released--the loose-knit collective had recorded material that was as durable, and occasionally eclipsed, the participants' legendary solo work. The Wilburys succeeded due to a genial and contagious camaraderie that permeates both discs. What could have been a train wreck of ego clashes instead resulted in a frothy meeting of the minds. These guys are having a blast, trading lead vocals and harmonies on energetic folk-rock, quirky rockabilly, and Beatlesque pop that shimmers with the respect and esteem the members clearly hold for each other. Harrison and Lynne's rather slick production polishes off edges that might better have been left unvarnished, but there's no denying the loosey-goosey craftsmanship at work in tunes such as "Handle with Care," "End of the Line," and a striking Orbison performance on "Not Alone Anymore" that ranks with any of his finest. Both albums were million-sellers, but oddly went out of print for about a decade until Rhino resurrected them, adding two rare tracks per disc as well as a DVD of music videos and a band documentary. I love the music of The Travelling Wilburys on the two discs here. I also enjoyed watching the videos on the DVD. "Handle With Care" and "End Of The Line" are my favorite tracks. I love George Harrison singing lead vocals on these classic tunes. "She's My Baby" is an excellent rock and roll song. I love Jeff Lynne's electric guitar playing on this track. "The Wilbury Twist" is a fun upbeat track. I love Tom's Petty's vocals. Not Alone Any More is another highlight here. Roy Orbison's voice is so heartfelt on this track. Bob Dylan shines on the tracks "Inside Out" on "Dirty World". He is the member of the group I knew least about. He is a very good singer. "New Blue Moon" is a perfect example of how well these musicians sound together. This is fun music.

I admit it, I discounted George as the lesser talent of all the Beatles, but I was sadly mistaken,and missed appreciating his talent for collaboration and production until now. He showcases the fine talents of Petty, Orbison,and Dylan with his own and with his and Lynn's talent as songwriters. This remastering has the truly finest sound ever to grace my premium auto sound system.

THIS IS WITHOUT A DOUBT A FIVE STAR COLLECTION. BUT, DOES ANYONE KNOW WHAT HAPPENED TO THE VINYL ISSUE THAT WAS SUPPOSED TO COME OUT? IN THE ORIGINAL PRESS RELEASE IT SAID THAT A VINYL VERSION WITH 3 LPS WAS GOING TO BE RELEASED. THE THIRD LP WAS GOING TO CONSIST ENTIRELY OF ALTERNATE TAKES THAT WEREN'T INCLUDED ON THE 2 CD/DVD SET. IT WAS ALSO GOING TO INCLUDE A BONUS POSTER AND BOOKLET. THANKS.

Amy Winehouse's second album, Back to Black, is one of the finest soul albums, British or otherwise, to come out for years. Frank, her first album, was a sparse and stripped-down affair; Back to Black, meanwhile, is neither of these things. This time around, she's taken her inspiration from some of the classic 1960's girl groups like the Supremes and the Shangri-Las, a sound particularly suited to her textured vocal delivery, while adding a contemporary songwriting sensibility. I love this CD. I can't stop listening to it. Amy's sound is so unique. Her voice is absolutely intoxicating. The mix of old style with new elements makes for interesting music and the lyrics really kick you in the pants. I highly recommend this CD for anyone that is looking for something different.

What I always wanted oldies to sound like........2007-07-31

Amy Winehouse has realized something that had always been in the back of my mind--I've always liked the sound of 60s R&B, but thought that it was a dead form that would never catch up with harder, contemporary sensibilities--at least without spoofing or just outright covering old songs. She's done it, and done it right--staying true to the sound rather than staying at an arm's length for irony's sake. Is it possible to make a wholly modern record from a retro sound while staying sincere and not mocking the source? Back to Black is proof that you can.

Something Very Different.......2007-07-29

I was in San Francisco , in a cd store of all places..go figure , and they were playing this cd.
At first i thought it was a very old re issue from the 50's Motown era, but when the guy at the counter said it was new and a hot seller i decided to listen.
First i heard Rehab , a pretty fun and amusing way to talk about bad habits..should be Lindsay Lohan's theme song.
Then came You Know I'm No Good, which i totally related to...lol.
Needless to say i went back home to boring Connecticut , and ordered it from Amazon, at half the price!
I have to say while Ms Winehouse is very young, she has a nice singing style that makes you think of 50's Motown and Jazz..and once more she does it pretty well!
Some of the songs have strong lyrics, but are not clearly noticed unless you really listen hard to the track , many are just plain fun , and have a good beat.
My very favorite song on this cd is when Amy slows it way down to do a torchy type ballad called Love Is A Losing Game.. This song is awesome! and Amy's vocals make you melt with feeling!
This young woman is clearly destined for much greater things.
The funny thing is she sounds like a black diva yet she is from the UK, and i was told is quite Jewish!
More power to her i say!
In fact Amy is quite pretty if you can get a glimpse of her without the rats nest hairpiece, gaudy makeup, and one too many tats.
I in no way insult her , but know she would clean up very well as she starts to mature and get beyond the youth oriented market i am sure her label has her set on.
This cd is pretty good and Amy's distinctive style is surely worth a listen!

Because it would be un-Prince-like to release a new studio album without kicking up a little controversy first, the Artist Formerly Known As a Cool-Looking Symbol gave away copies of Planet Earth with a British news tabloid weeks before its U.S. release. Among the reasons he shouldn't have: nobody who catches wind of the peerless funk-rock-soul he lays out on these 10 tracks--least of all longtime fans--would think twice about shelling out for it. A big chunk of the appeal is that Prince finds his way back to his guitar here. ...because we're the only ones that will put up with such mediocre tripe from a man who knows better. First let me say that I love Prince, even when I chunk money down for stuff that should have never had a price tag on it. Not everything that pops in your head needs to be set to music. Overall, I like three songs on this: Guitar, Somewhere here on earth and Mr. Goodnight. Lyric wise: I could have written The one U want to C-probably like in the Junior High. Prince is very good writing senusal lyrics, but whenever he starts his political agenda stuff, it suddenly sounds juvenile and campy. Like: Planet Earth and Resolutions. He truely could have kept : All the midnights in the world. It's only tolerable because it's so short. While he's waxing proses about the problem with wars and people, I think the problem with telling certain people that they are musical geniuses is that they start slacking off and start pasting weak lyrics on recycled beats. Sorry, but some of these songs sound eerily familar. Still, I'm a sucker for my 80s icon and I'll continue to follow his music journey. Overall, get for your collection, but try to get yourself one of those free copies if you can.

Bottom line, it's a good CD........2007-07-31

Ever since Musicology, all of Prince's albums have either been considered his return to form or another disappointment. To me, it's just unfair to compare 2007 prince to 1985 prince.

He's released so many albums and has so much material still locked up in the vault, you can't blame the guy for running low on ideas. All of the past greats still recording, from Paul McCartney to Stevie Wonder, aren't even coming close to their primes.

So instead of using the "Purple Rain was 5 stars, so Planet Earth gets 3" approach, I chose to judge it for what it is. All 10 songs are iPod worthy, and like 3121 and Musicology, this one has a couple truly Prince-calibur tracks mixed in. Some complain about the bad pacing, but this format makes you want to listen all the way through and gives the feeling of a true album, instead of a collection of songs.

A lot of reviewers will tell you simply to listen to his past work instead, but true fans can appreciate this just as a fresh Prince album that's among the best of the year and can be listened to front to back.

Like another reviewer mentioned, due to critical praises I expected a lot more from Prince's latest CD, but was let down. I like a couple of the songs, but I'm not crazy about them, which for a crazy Prince fan like me, is a big downer. Oh well, thankfully I have all his previous other great stuff to listen to (which I'm doing right now).

This is the best over-all album I've heard of Prince since his ground-breaking 'Purple Rain' quite a few years ago. From the title of the album, I thought it would be an earth theme package but it's anything but - although the title song is a great piece of work in itself. Something on this album for everyone. Some ballads, others racier tunes. Extreme good orchestra rifts with piano, guitars and sax. Any of these selections could be a hit and almost made for FM radio. My favorite album of the year so far.

Tweens aren't often heralded for their good judgment and excellent taste (Heelys--hello), but if any young starlet can redeem them, it's Hannah Montana. On this, the second soundtrack from the Disney Channel series, Miley Cyrus takes her cues from her TV alter ego, who has an alter ego of her own: Disc 1 features Miley as Hannah, hair-tossing pop princess by weekend, likable schoolgirl by weekday (see "Old Blue Jeans" and "True Friends" to get a sense of each episode's un-cloying sweetness). But disc 2 is the start of something new, as her friends over on the High School Musical set might say: Miley sings strictly as her spunky, truth-telling self. This yields a number of pepped-up pop tracks bound to vibrate through the walls of pink bedrooms everywhere--"See You Again" is a boy-centric song instantly relatable to anyone who's ever been in seventh grade and suffered a bout of bashfulness, "East Northumberland High" puts a punk spin on an I'm-just-not-into-you tale, and "Clear" bounces on a reggae beat while canceling any doubt about our heroine's ability to stand up for herself. The second CD by Hannah Montana / debut of Miley Cyrus doesn't disappoint, but doesn't live up to the expectations that I had for it; for me because there were just so many songs. The Hannah Montana side is definitely the preferred one, though, although Miley's side can be charming at times.

My track-by-track synopsis:

Disc 1 | Hannah Montana

1.) We Got The Party With Us [8/10]: This song definitely grew on me; I didn't like it at first, because it wasn't as 'rockish', as I would've expected her album opener for me. But it is a good song.

2.) Nobody's Perfect [10/10]: This is one of the album's strongest tracks, in my opinion. It conveys a good message for everyone, and is pleasing to listen to. There are little touches of a violin playing that adds a nice touch to it. The chorus is catchy, and will get you singing along to it all day.

3.) Make Some Noise [10/10]: Cheesy? Yes. But it is inspirational. It's songs like this that kids should listen too, telling them to believe in themselves, instead of the heartbreak, that boy doesn't like me stuff that is heard on the radio 24 /7.

4.) Rockstar [9/10]: It's very catchy. It has an extremely peppy tune that will cheer you up when you're down.
The lyrics are also, I must say, adorable.

5.) Old Blue Jeans [7/10]: The seven is just for the message it says, otherwise this song just doesn't appeal to me at all.

6.) Life's What You Make It [10/10]: This is another one of the strongest tracks. It's the whole deal, good melody, good lyrics, good message, it's basically goodxalot.

7.) One in A Million [10/10]: I personally think this song is beautiful. The melody is simply gorgeous. I usually compare this to If We Were A Movie from her previous soundtrack, so while this isn't nearly as creative as that one (I'm assuming because this one is a cover anyway), I'm glad that this love song turned out beautifully. My personal favorite.

8.) Bigger Than Us [8/10]: They made her voice sound nice and sweet in this one. But, (episode reference), in one of the episodes that I happened to see, it centered around this song, and they made it seem like such a hit, but while the message is pure, it's not that great. Good nonetheless though.

9.) You And Me Together [8/10]: Again, very catchy. Again, good message. But it's nothing extremely special.

10.) True Friend [8/10]: It's undoubtedly a cute song that all 'BFFs' will hear, and it's sweet, but I just don't know what I don't like about this and the previous song. Vocals maybe?

Disc 2 | Miley Cyrus

1.) See You Again [8/10]: The chorus, I love. Otherwise, it's very bland. Not the best way to start her album off.

2.) Eastnorthumberland High [10/10]: This is one of my favorites on her album. It has a ridiculously catchy beat, and it's refreshing, new, for the topic its about.

3.) Let's Dance [9/10]: It's not a bad song at all, but she should leave the 'rapping' to the rappers. It doesn't suit her or the song.

4.) G.N.O-Girl's Night Out [9/10]: Good chorus, good lyrics. It's a good song for when you're just sick of boys and want to go out and have fun.

5. / 7.) Right Here/ Start All Over [5/10]: I just don't like them. Lyrics do matter, and these have the lyrics, but these songs just don't have the 'whole package' with a catchy hook or anything. And while good hooks aren't necessary, when your voice is nothing special, or strong, in that case, they are.

6.) As I Am [8/10]: Pretty song; the guy described is the guy all girls should find.

8.) Clear [8/10]: It's very...tropical; which surprisingly suits the song very, very well, seeing it's about finally seeing how things are going in a relationship, making it 'clear'.

9.) Good and Broken [9/10]: Another one of my favorites, it's a good song.

10.) I Miss You [10/10]: Good way to end the album. The version heard on the show was a lot prettier, but this one is still sweet anyway.

Final thoughts: It's not a bad CD, but I think it would've been better if they were released separately. 20 songs is a lot to listen to in one listening. Otherwise, above solid effort.

This is a young girl with quite a voice. My daughter (10) and her friends know every song by heart. Personally, I love the GNO (Girls Night Out) song best. Good Rock and Roll beat without heavy metal. Obviously Miley is a CW crossover hit as well.

Sorry gal, this girl's going to be around for a LONNNNGGGGG time. She's got talent and has everything working for her: good backing by Disney, great parents, music and entertainment contacts and simply put her TALENT. For such a young kid, she's amazingly balanced.

Even those allergic to musicals may be won over by Once, a tender-hearted Irish romance with songs by Czech Republic-born Markéta Irglová and Frames frontman Glen Hansard. (The film's director, John Carney, actually used to play bass in the group.) The trick here is that Irglová and Hansard also play the leads; because their characters are shown busking, writing music, or rehearsing, the songs are smoothly integrated in the film. The overall acoustic mood won't surprise fans of the Frames--some tracks ("Say It to Me," "When Your Mind's Made Up") have even popped up on the band's albums, though the arrangements are more pared-down here, befitting the scruffy, street-musician setting. Being the lesser-known entity, Irglová feels like a revelation; she sounds a bit like a folkie Björk on "If You Want Me," and her song "The Hill" is downright heartbreaking. Irglová and Hansard had already made the 2006 album The Swell Seasontogether, so their collaboration here feels really organic--they sound particularly good together on the title track, for instance. Great Pic, great music.......2007-08-01

Normally I don't bother to review things, but this music and movie are so special, I want to help promote them both. I've seen the movie three times and there were only a handful of people in the theater on any of the three occasions. Way too bad - especially when so much garbage out there gets huge numbers. Anyway, I've become a new fan of both the Frames and Glen Hansard. The music he and Merketa make together is exceptional. Everyone I've turned on to them has loved it. Just wish they were getting a bigger audience - they certainly deserve it! Buy the CD, you won't be disappointed.

Inseperable from the movie.......2007-07-30

For some reason subsequent listening to the track outside the movie are not as powerful. The film itself and the sountrack together are very moving but without it I'm not sure the sound track is as cohesive. Still, it's faultless, beautiful acoustic soundtrack.

The two scenes from the movie that are still haunting are the songs "If you want me" and "Say it to me now". I would actually suggest getting the DVD for the full experience. Awesome stuff.

If I could give it more stars I would. Went into see this movie that my husband had picked out. He said it was described as an unusual musical. That's all I knew. I loved this movie so much. Couldn't get the tunes out of my head. Went home right after the movie and bought the CD on Amazon. Went to see it again and brought my brother-in-law and his wife to see it. They loved it. I had already bought two CD's (planned on giving them one) even before they had seen the movie. This is one of those inexpensive movies that become an incredible hit. Trust me, go and see it.

Given the chart success of their Grammy-winning country single "Who Says You Can't Go Home," it's no surprise Bon Jovi upped the ante by recording an entire album paying homage to Nashville. Multiple Layers of Sound He Created.......2007-08-01

There's one thing I want to say, so I'll be brave. Basically, I don't know how many times I kept on trying and kept on failing and failing and trying and failing in order to make certain dream come true. Sometimes it's better to sink than to swim. Thankfully, Bon Jovi doesn't subscribe to this advice. I was once told in confidence that he does, but this propitious slab proves that his artistic compass could indeed see land. Tracks like "Vanishing Horse" and "Ditching a Plane For Cat Food" are the immediate standouts, highlighting Bon's enthusiasm for the novelty hits of yesteryear. But "jack'round" music is not the only boring part here. Bon begins to put all his eggs in the most fearsome basket of all by track 3, the thunderous and ivy-covered "False Hope." I thought that was the most awesome song there was at the time. It is an anti-Irish diatribe in the spirit of "Firecrotch" from his 1976 masterpiece "Pussy Heaven," but this time the unsuspecting targets are Chinese railroad workers of the late 1800's. Heartfelt verses give way to the rousing, chanted chorus of "go home or effing die!" Over and over. Yeah. Sometimes I hear a CD and I think that nothing could ever be as good as this. Well, that's what I thought about this one. "Final Approach" is the best song. It's a heavy rocker in the spirit of Century or Robust Rufus, and probably the most emotionally-healthy breakup song I've heard to date. And I've heard a lot of emotionally-healthy breakup songs. I assume this was written to deal with the death and Co-dine overdose of Bon's second wife, Marie, in August. I was made to understand that he was so excited by her magnetism and the intensity of her speech methods, but especially by the power of the images she was capturing in her "beat poetry." Then the whole damn thing basically all goes downhill from there. Awesome record, though. Bon Jovi has done it again........2007-07-30

Wasn't sure how I'd like this CD, but after seeing Bon Jovi sing some of the songs on TV I ordered it. I was very pleasantly surprised. I like most of the songs on the CD. The quality of the CD is excellent. The duet between Jon Bon Jovi and Leann Rimes is amazing and is now one of my favorite songs.

I loved it; vocals and instrumentals were strong. My personal favorite is "One Step Closer", but I loved all the tracks. If Bon Jovi is selling out, then I am going with them!

Astounding debut album.......2007-08-01

This album gets 4 stars because the engineers tried too hard to drown out Mr. Potts in the second selection. I also wish there had been at least one more real opera hit. "Nessun Dorma" is sung really well, including a small chorus in the interlude of the aria. The balance of the album is Italian (or Spanish) schlock. Good schlock, please understand, but standard pop stuff. Sort of a solo version of "Il Divo."

The difference here is Potts himself. His voice is ever so slightly reedy. He does have the timbre and size of voice to pull off his signature tune, "Nessun Dorma", but I'd hate to see him try the entire opera. Unlike say Mario Lanza, when he tackles the more intimate songs, he lets the focus shift away from all-out operatic singing. yet he never gets the "microphone" voice that Boccelli uses at times. Potts is just able to tune his sound to the material at hand. He is always connected emotionally, too, which some greater singers than he is can't say. I have many complete operas in my collection, and yet I bought this album because I found his performing to be quite moving. Pity Paul Potts? Never! He is a real singer and not the product of some over processed sound machine.

I just received my Paul Potts CD and absolutely love each arrangement - listening to him brings tears to my eyes. After watching him on YouTube, I can visualize his wonderful eyes with such intense focus, and he always steps back and bows to his audience with great sincerity and humility. I received my CD today and Paul is fabulous. I don't care if there are those out there who say he is untrained, has a language problem, or whatever. I lived in Italy five years and his Italian sounds just fine to me. We have you now Paul and you aren't getting away. I don't see you selling phones again anytime soon.

Actually, I'm surprised they got this one out so quickly after his incredible win on Britain's Got Talent. If you are waiting to buy this in the United States, I believe it isn't due for release till Sept but I just couldn't wait.

I know there will be critics of Potts (each to his or her own) but I think the great strength of this CD is that it may (finally) bring opera to the masses again and perhaps that is why they stuck with so many classic works. Potts does a fine job, at least as well (or better) than his performances on television. For those who are longtime opera lovers, they may find fault with some of his notes or delivery but please consider that this man does not have a long career backed by professional production and that the CD was put out rather quickly.

PLEASE BE AWARE THE SONGS ARE SUNG IN ITALIAN. For me, that makes the CD even more special because I can focus on the emotion and not the lyrics.

Here are my favorites and my thoughts:
Nessun Dorma - the song that stunned the world. It says something that this rather humble man's performance was forwarded to people via email, on video sites and had a record number of viewings - and for opera, not even rock or country music! Definitely a surprise that the average person took to this so well, except that his voice was (and IS) truly stunning. This piece is hauntingly lovely.

Con de Partiro (Time To Say Goodbye) - I wish he'd sung without so much accompaniment but other than that, I have no complaints. A love song that I could listen to again and again.

I'm one of the 8 million plus viewers of Paul Potts on youtube and I pre-ordered his CD from amazon right after I heard him. I just received it today and am totally blown away by his magnificent voice. The included songs will be familiar to most people, some opera, some popular and all just a total joy to listen to.

I will be anxiously awaiting his future CD's.

Judging by the themes of anger and betrayal that dominate Kelly Clarkson's third disc, My December, perhaps 'Jagged Little Idol' would have been a more telling title. According to interviews, the massively successful artist wanted more creative control with her music going forward; as a result, unlike her previous CDs, Clarkson contributes as a songwriter on every track. The final product is not nearly as catchy as Breakaway, but is far more introspective and honest. My December's overall sound brings a harder musical style than fans might expect, with acerbic lyrics to match; the disc's first single "Never Again"--a dark rock song slamming her ex-boyfriend--is certainly a tip-off. The compelling chorus of "Hole" finds Clarkson singing "There's a hole/inside of me/it's so damn cold/slowly killing me" over a melody that is far more Tool than top-40. "Haunted" and "Judas" are wrought-over tracks that veer into Evanescence territory, while the wonderfully sparse "Maybe" is a highlight within which Clarkson's pleading voice is perfectly showcased. My December's final listed track, "Irvine" (prior to the hidden bluesy acoustic ballad "Chivas") sounds far more Cat Power-meets-Corinne Bailey Rae than Clarkson, but it is certainly one of the most captivating songs on the disc, and serves as yet another reminder of just how versatile her voice is. Fans of her previous radio-friendly releases may well be divided on her new direction, but it appears to be the path Clarkson is likely to continue to travel. --Denise Sheppard

Kelly's album...not her best but not bad.......2007-08-01

I was excited when Kelly's new album was coming out. I love her music and have followed her from Idol till now. Kelly is still having growing pains in trying to find herself as an artist. Although it is easy to take help from Clive Davis...Kelly chose to carve her own path artistically with this record. Kelly falls slightly short overall, but her efforts are to be commended. She has experienced true success quickly and a little bit of reality check may be what helps her find her balance as an artist. I predict her next album will be better as most of us learn from our mistakes and take our successes and improve upon them.

Kelly is such a talented and beautiful girl. This album is good, but not her best. I think she sounds like she is screaming alot and many of the songs sound the same. It's a sad album - maybe she needed to get some things off her mind?

i don't care what anyone says, this girl can sing!!! Her vocal range on this CD is amazing, gritty,very nice to rock to. I think this is her best CD- it's her all the way through. The slow build-ups through some of the songs just make the energy she sings with even better. it's been in my CD player since it came out, I still listen to it every day. GREAT JOB KELLY!!!

Even Kelly's grown out of this. But it's still good........2007-07-31

It's clear what the rumors are about, and there is good reason why the record company didn't want this released. Kelly's bitter here, much like a high school junior would be bitter if the senior boy she was crushed up on turned out to be dating the prom queen. And this CD is the pop rock equivalent of the scribblings in that girl's diary, complete with roughly-drawn effigies of crush and girlfriend. And yet, just as there is a cringing pleasure in re-reading those journal entries once you've gone out in the world and steeled yourself against such tragedies, there is a whole lot of fun in hearing Kelly using her pipes to bring real drama to what was probably a very short period in her young, otherwise charmed life.

I'm enough of a fan to have tracked down a Q&A with her talking about how she has moved on personally from the place where these songs were written, and that her performance of these songs are now a bit of theater. It's a relief, because this stuff is pretty angry. It would be a shame to think that she didn't fuel this project with real grief, but it would be worse to think that she was still wallowing in it. Good thing she let it out and let it go in such a listenable way.
