The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Very pleased.......2007-06-10

I wasn't sure what to expect when I bought this CD. True, I could have listened on line before buying but that would have taken the fun out of the purchase. Besides, I really didn't care for the CD the first couple of times I listened but now I really love it. It's not something to listen to all the time but given the right circumstances e.g. a small gathering of friends, it's perfect. If I'd listened to online, I wouldn't have purchased it.

Sumptuous and mellow.......2002-11-28

The six men of the King's Singers present sweet and light-hearted madrigals of such English composers as Morley, Weelkes, Dowland, Wilbye and Byrd. The thirty five selections include "Now is the Month of Maying", "Though Philomela Lost Her Love", "Sing We and Chant It," the celebration of tobacco entitled "Come, Sirrah Jack, Ho!" and a host of other fa-la-la-la-la venues interspersed with wistful laments. I love the rich, sonorous sound of a male vocal ensemble, with countertenors, tenor, baritones and bass, and these six singers do a great job. Occasional instrumental accompaniments by lute and tabor are included, but this group doesn't really need it--I could listen to them for hours all by themselves. Also quite enjoyable, as well as educational, is their earlier release, "The King's Singers' Madrigal History Tour: Italy, England, France, Spain and Germany". For a more risque' take on the vocal music of Renaissance England, you might get a kick out of "The Art of the Bawdy Song" by the Baltimore Consort with the Merry Companions.

One of the Best Collections of English Madrigals.......2002-03-27

Any fan of the King's Singers will regret not having this album in their collection.

This album offers a veritable feast of the choicest English madrigals found on any comparable album. From the obligatory "Now is the Month of Maying" and "Fair Phyllis" to the more obscure "Tan ta ra, cries Mars," there is certainly enough on this album to bring a smile to lovers of Renaissance music - and a spark of recognition to anyone who sang traditional madrigals in high school or university. For serious students of early music, this album comes very highly recommended.

Among the more sonorous offerings on this album, Jones' "Farewell, Dear Love" and Dowland's "Come Again," cannot be ignored. Nor can Bennet's immortal "Weep O mine eyes" be matched more musically than here by the King's Singers.

This album has been played again and again for almost 6 years as both serious listening and background working music. And it has yet to lose its delight.

A Delightful Collection of English Madrigal.......2000-08-16

With 35 tracts to enjoy you're sure to find a couple of favorites. I gave this CD 4 of 5 stars compared to 5 stars for the King's Singers World Madrigal Tour CD. If you prefer all your songs in English, this will be your 5 star CD. Tract 32 "Come again" is my favorite due to the surperb tenor lead and melodic development. Ever since...I was 11, I've been in love with Lesley Gore. I've been a fan from the very beginning. "It's My Party" and "Judy's Turn To Cry" were there for me during the Summer of 1963. I followed her career through every album and every hit. Her voice always magical to me, and those eyes framed by the perfectly golden flipped hair, they were the source of my teenage fantasies. However,poor Lesley has been slighted since the late 60's and it came as a surprise and huge pleasure to me to see and listen her newly acclaimed song collection-"Ever Since". It is such a mature labor of love, featuring a new Lesley, with a rich "life weary" voice, her phrasing so exacting and exquisite, and immaculate production values. Every song is worth a listen. I highly recommend this cd, it is a worthy culmination to one of the great pop icons of the 1960's. Savor it, like a fine glass of wine. Thank you Lesley, your fan forever,

Being too young to really know much about Ms. Gore's early pop career, I got turned onto her music by a friend who took me to one of her live shows. Without the need to compare the old with the new interfering with my experience of her performance, I simply took it for what it is --- brilliant, moving, full of soul! I bought the record, and now it's one of my favorites.

Gore's Grown Up With Style.......2007-04-22

For Lesley Gore, outstanding girl singer of the early 1960's -- "It's My Party," and so forth -- her newish CD, "Ever Since," has been a long time in the making: nearly 40 years. It's been a long time in the waiting for her fans, too. And make no mistake about it, Gore's grown up in the interval. "Ever Since" clearly notes the passage of time, and the trials of being a grownup.

The album has a fresh, jazzy sound, as befits the work of a girl who cut her teeth in the tutelage of jazz great Quincy Jones. On this album, she's working with skilled pianist/producer Blake Morgan. Its title song, "Ever Since" is melodic, a bit melancholy, and can't help but wonder where the years went, while musing on a lifetime of parties. "Cool Web" is just that. "Better Angels," a sophisticated song used on television's "CSI: Miami" was written by Morgan, as was "It's Gone." Gore and her brother Michael wrote the beautiful, Academy Award-winning "Out Here on My Own," for the movie "Fame;" Irene Cara did a memorable job on it, but an older Lesley Gore finds levels in the song a younger woman couldn't hope to deliver. Gore also takes writing credits on the witty "Not The First," "Words We Don't Say," and "We Went So High." Finally, the album delivers a reimagined "You Don't Own Me," her protofeminist anthem of the 1960's, that's almost worth the wait.

Gore's voice reflects the passage of time in its timbre and tone. Her high register is as beautiful as ever it was; she can hit those notes and hold them. Her middle register's a bit mushy. She tends to talk her lower register, but it works. I just saw her in person; she certainly still puts on a great show. Guess we all have to grow up someday; Gore's done it with style.

Hilarious and Witty.......2003-05-20

I found this CD one day in a music store, and picked it up at random - actually, I saw the song title "Slightly Bitchy Philosopher Dream Chick Meets the Insecure Martian Prophet", and had to head straight to the listening station. I bought the CD right away, and never regretted it.

While the lyrics are inarguably adolescent, they're still brilliantly funny. The music behind them can only be described as really fun - Protein is the polar opposite of every self-involved, egotistical, ultra-serious Top 40 band around.

All in all, a great CD.

If your tired of music of late taking itself way too seriously, you should definately own this disc. I think the lyrics have a playful/childish tone yet insightful and philosophical at the same time. "My climb through time to define this design, just takes time and wastes time, its over my head" " The waitress has fangs, in my dream , its so strange, cause the waitress is Jesus, its over my head" - Over my Head - I feel the message of this song is to get busy living and stop trying to guess the meaning of so many riddles. Other lyrics point to the way I felt growing up, but didnt know how to describe. Another plus for me is that I like to own music that nobody I know, has heard about. I wouldnt be surprised if I own thew only copy in town.

Smart, funny lyrics.......1998-11-01

This is one of the best and funniest CDs I have heard, which is saying alot, coming from a collection including everything from Wierd Al to Presidents of the United States of America, to Marcy Playground. This is a great CD, a must have, and I am waiting for something like it to come along. Protein, make another!

A CD you must have.......1998-08-01

Protein has the punk edge of todays popular bands without going too punk. The lyrics are sometimes strange, but definitely catchy. The beat they keep is rocking, especially the bass. I bought this CD after seeing the band live. This band rocks, and I highly recommend adding it to your CD collection!!!!!!!!

Opera in English.......2007-03-19

Barry Banks is certainly a contender for one of the best tenors around. THis is a great example of coloratura and legato line which is very well executed in a rather booming tenor voice. I just saw Mr. Banks in "The Elixer of Love" and he was stupendous. This is a large tenor voce in the theatre which alas is difficult to capture in a studio recording...you have to take my word. THe translations are often odd as they generally are, but this recording is certainly worth having. (although I prefer in the original language)

Mr. Banks has a "heroic lyric tenor" if there is such a category. His fast vibrato and power lend the voice excitement and attention getting presence. I was intrigued by him in his stunning appearance in the Rimsky-Korsakov "Le'Coq d'Or" DVD (a not-to-be-missed experience)-- he was a stand-out there there and I went looking for other things by him. This CD is treasurable in many ways. The repertoire is interesting and the duets add flavor to the whole. The only small complaint I have is that perhaps Mr. Banks lacks just the last bit of emotional connection in his singing. You won't go wrong getting this excellent CD.

Great Gift.......2007-06-20

I just received this CD as a gift. Julianna's voice is sweet and sultry and a pleasure to listen to. I can highly recommend this CD. You might also take a look at the soundtrack to the movie 'Open Range' which she wrote and sang the 'Ending Credits' song for. Many people have bought the soundtrack for that reason alone.

I was turned on to this disc from Julianna's song on the Open Range soundtrack (fantastic!) and had to find out more. After a listen to this CD I was hooked. One of the most talented singer / songwriters I have ever heard. Produced by the just as talented Ethan Johns! What a combination. I hope they do more together.

Ripe, witty, and endlessly playable.......2003-09-08

There is not a bad track on this CD, as far as I'm concerned. It's melodic, eclectic, evocative, and funny, too. Also a bit addictive. Such a rare combination you wonder why you don't get it pressed on you by all your friends. Maybe people didn't know where to file it, because it feels as much jazz as pop. In case that was the problem, I'm writing this review: buy it,--if you like music, you won't regret it.

Fine recital of neglected composer.......2000-10-29

I'd agree with the earlier reviewer that this CD is for those who have already tried Dowland. However Dowland has been fortunate in the recording studio and Campion much neglected (this appears to be the only disc dedicated to him currently available) so Naxos deserve our thanks for having brought Rickards and Linell back together for a second disc. What is particularly encouraging is to find a whole disc of songs, not just a few raisins in a cake of viol music which is how Dowland and his contemporaries are normally represented. Not that I've anything against mixed recitals - the collaborations of Fretwork with Red Byrd are beautiful - but it tends to be the same better known songs.

The first recordings of early English music on the Naxos label (I'm thinking of Summerly's earlier recordings of Byrd, Tomkins, Gibbons) lacked texts, that has been corrected in later releases, including both this disc (timing 52:52), and the earlier Rickards Dowland recital (8.553381, 1997, timing 74:08). Sound on both discs is more than adequate.

Good Performance but the content?.......2000-02-01

I make no claims to being knowledable about the intricacies of this music. But if I were giving stars I'd give the performance four or five and the content...um...that's the hard part.

I bought this out of curiosity. Campion's lyrics turn up occasionally in anthologies of poetry and I was curious to hear the songs. I own Rickards and Linell's "Dowland: Flow my tears and other lute songs" and i play it often so I also wanted to know what Dowland's competition sounded like.

Firstly, the performance is of the same high standard as on the other disk. Which is good. Linell plays well and Rickards' voice is fine. The liner notes provide good background information as well as the words to the songs. The only real complaint I could have about the performance is probably related to production: The lute sounds small, thin and distant compared with, say, Bream's lute on "The golden age of English Lute music" or Lindberg's on "The complete solo lute music". This is true of the pair's Dowland recording as well but it may only be a drawback if you're trying to use the performances as a guide to playing the songs yourself. ( I was).

The real drawback to this recording though is the material. Play the Dowland and you're liable to find yourself humming odd snatches of the songs. Play the Campion and you're liable to have difficulty remembering any of the individual tunes. Nor do the lyrics redeem the music. He probably was a "better " lyric writer than Dowland (whatever that means) but music wise Dowland beats him hollow.

If you're studying music history this might be an interesting collection. But if you're just curious and want an introduction to the songs of the period, go for the Dowland first. You're liable to be left feeling like you could listen to more, and then the Campion becomes interesting as a variation. Buy the Campion first and you're liable to wonder why people get enthusiastic about English lute songs. And that would be a pity and a disservice to Linell and Rickards who do such a good job.

Amazing Soloists, Glorious Sonics, Varied Compositions . ........2004-07-13

This disc is a hard one to review. It might possibly receive 5 stars from someone who is more attuned than I am to some of the selections on this recording. At any rate, it deserves 5 stars for the performances and for the sonics, but I can only give it 4 because I couldn't relate to half of the program.

There's no denying that Samuel Adler is one of the champions of contemporary American music, both Jewish and otherwise. His father was was a highly respected cantor and composer in pre-war Mannheim, and in 1939 the Adler family came to the US because of the persecution of the Jews of Europe. Adler studied composition with Aaron Copland, Paul Hindemith, Walter Piston and Randall Thompson and studied conducting with Serge Koussevitzky. His compositions and his awards are many. Amazon.com lists a dozen or so recordings featuring his works.

My favorite selection on this recording is FIVE SEPHARDIC CHORUSES for six soloists, mixed choir and piano accompaniment. They are cheery, upbeat, joyful, and in my opinion should be included in the repertoire of professional and collegiate choruses everywhere. I'd enjoy singing them if I were a chorus member.

It's unfortunate that only a few Reform synagogues have the resources to perform large-scale works such as Adler's High Holy Day suite "Hinei Yom Hadin" and "Shiru Ladonai," his complete Sabbath evening service. And since we don't have complete recordings of those works, these SELECTED LITURGICAL WORKS will have to suffice. Masterfully performed by the Rochester Singers and Cantors Alberto Mizrahi and Roslyn Jhunever Barak (gorgeous voice), and organist Barbara Harbach. The composer conducts. Lovely music, beautiful singing. Worth the price of this disc.

The rest of the pieces on the disc - NUPTIAL SCENE, EXCERPTS FROM THE BINDING, and SYMPHONY NO. 5: WE ARE ECHOES - fail to engage me emotionally. Nevertheless, I can, and do, appreciate the craftsmanship of the composer and the artistry of the performers. Listening to soprano Phyllis Bryn-Julson navigate the impossibly difficult vocal part on Symphony No. 5 is an "awesome" experience. (". . . the purity of her voice, a three-octave range, and perfect pitch have made her internationally renowned as an interpreter of 20th century music.") However, I need music that appeals to my emotions as well as to my intellect, so I don't think I'll be listening to these three pieces with any regularity in the future. You, however, may feel differently.

Music lovers should be grateful to Milken Archive not only for exposing us to new music and to little-known composers, but also for giving us the opportunity to hear so many excellent musicians. This disc alone features twelve outstanding soloists as well as the Kirkpatrick Choir of Rutgers University, the Rundfunk-Sinfonieorchester Berlin, and The Slovak Radio Symphony Orchestra. All are worthy of our praise and appreciation, as are Lowell Milken and Neil W. Levin of the Milken Archive. I sincerely hope this series is a huge financial AND artistic success.
