Though this release carries the deceptive subtitle Another Record by Ry Cooder, the virtuosic guitarist and ethnomusicological adventurer has never released another album quite like this. And neither has anyone else. After brilliant side trips into the music of pre-Castro Cuba and pre-baseball Chavez Ravine, Cooder returns to the Depression-era and Dust Bowl ballads that marked his earliest solo releases of the 1970s. Yet most of this material is original, offering a populist parable of three fellow travelers: Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse, and the Reverend Tom Toad. The tradition of putting pointed social commentary in the mouths of animals extends from Animal Farm to Pogo, and Buddy seems like a feline cross between Woody Guthrie and Joe Hill--a troubadour of union solidarity, interspecies brotherhood, and radical populism. Though Cooder's cartoon vocals occasionally sound a little mannered, the music throughout ranks with his best, as he reunites with conjunto accordion master Flaco Jimenez and soul singers Terry Evans and Bobby King, enlists banjo brothers Pete and Mike Seeger, and receives inspired support from the Chieftains' Paddy Moloney, pianist Van Dyke Parks, and drummers Jim Keltner and (his son) Joachim Cooder. Whether he's channeling his inner Chet Baker on "Green Dog" or closing with the utopian vision of "There's a Bright Side Somewhere," Cooder shows more sides of his multifaceted music than he has on any previous release. --Don McLeeseAlbum Description
On My Name Is Buddy, Ry Cooder revisits, in a new set of original material, the sound and feeling of the "dust bowl songs" he first explored more than three decades ago on such groundbreaking albums as his self-titled 1970 debut and 1971's In The Purple Valley. In fact, he's joined by old friends like pianist Van Dyke Parks and drummer Jim Keltner who were with him at the start of his extraordinary, ultimately globe-spanning musical odyssey, which has yielded him six Grammy Awards to date, several more nominations, and perennial acclaim. My Name Is Buddy is also a journey, a phantasmagorical rendering in music, words and pictures of the travels of three unlikely cohorts - Buddy Red Cat, Lefty Mouse and Reverend Tom Toad - as they meander through the west "in the days of labor, big bosses, farm failures, strikes, company cops, sundown towns, hobos and trains...the America of yesteryear." For this allegorical tale, Cooder marshals all his remarkable skills as a producer, arranger, songwriter, soundtrack composer and musicologist. (The Christian Science Monitor recently dubbed him "a modern-day Alan Lomax.") My Name Is Buddy recalls Woody Guthrie's Bound for Glory - that is, if it had been enacted by the articulate animal characters of Walt Kelly's classic comic Pogo. Cooder conjures up the dark shadows of an earlier time to wryly comment on the political and social issues of the present. As back-story to his songs, Cooder has written short stories for each one and they're accompanied by evocative illustrations from noted San Antonio-based painter and muralist Vincent Valdez, all of which are included in a specially designed package.Customer Reviews:
Good--but it doesn't hold together for me as well as the reviews described.......2007-07-12
I cannot fault the musicianship and the storyline is fascinating. Anyone who has a past anchored in the Dust Bowl area will identify with the stories---Cooder must have done his research from testimonials of folks who'd been there. If you are interested in this topic, the Oklahoma Historical Society has an extensive oral history collection, plus there were many interviews conducted by the WPA during the Depression. (The Indian Pioneer Histories)
One thing, I'm happy I got this CD used. I'd probably rate it less if I'd paid $16.99 for it and seen the 'eco packaging' already raveling at the edges. Yes, I'd like friendlier CD covers, but please can we at least get archival quality here? I do plan on keeping this CD.
...it wasn't that long ago...........2007-06-18
Ry Cooder seems to be able to find the wonderful diversity of our world lurking under the notes. He plays and out comes ...the heat of the desert as desperation in Paris, Texas, ...the saucy spirit of persistence in Buena Vista Social Club, the fun "Oh I forgot how happy music makes me" in Chicken Skin Music. There are so many. And whats amazing is that there is hardly an album or soundtrack that you don't listen to - I mean really listen.
This is another amazing effort. Full of depression and unionizations references. There is Buddy (the buddy system), Lefty (left - get it), J. Edgar the pig (you can do this one yourself). Characters, good and bad, the truck drivers, the Klan (Republiklans), the poll police (the man) and the wonderful farmer's daughter.
I think the message could have been stronger. Pete Seeger is definitely part of the inspiration. He was master of the alagory - but he had to be. Those were the days when the man would pop out of nowhere and you would be gone (maybe lost to the coyotes). Seeger let his listener pull the power of the issue out of his prose. Ry Cooder could have been abit more "in our face" with these issues. 'Chavez Ravine' proves he has a punch.
But - fear not - this is too good to pull back a star. Listen to it and tell the younger folks that there were times when it was hard - really hard - to find the bright side.
Sorry Ry..........2007-06-12
Now, let's hear from more of those folks who couldn't write a negative review if their life depended on it....Those are the ones that always wind up at the top of Amazon's Customer reviews.
ry cooder at his best.......2007-06-08
Ry's own voice.......................................2007-05-31
(a) sings in a style I remember him most for, that is, in a straightforward unstrained manner, as he did on his earlier albums that I admired so much, and
(b) brings back to the arena some political folk sentiments, so we have some Woody Guthrie/Pete Seeger sprinklings along the way.
And he also brings along something rather new for him, a concept album built along a developing lyrical theme. So we have a story line that runs the length of the album.
As always, excellent sidemen and women bring invaluable contributions. But my first thiought on hearing this was that Ry was letting his own voice take its rightful place in the mix again, not so much at the expense of spotlighting his string playing and the guests.

Robert Cray says that Buddy Guy's guitar solos sound like laughter from space, but they can also peal like the cries of lost souls attempting to cross the River Styx. If these 47 songs on three CDs plus a DVD boasting a new 75-minute documentary and six performances from the Montreux Jazz Festival prove anything, it's that Guy is one of the most dynamic, diverse, expressionistic, and emotional guitarists--in any genre. The set neatly examines the 70-year-old Chicago blues legend's half-century career, starting with a ragged but soulful "The Way You Been Treating Me" cut in 1957 at a radio station in Guy's native Louisiana that finds him developing his searing, exploratory style. A year later, he's in Chicago working with tunesmith Willie Dixon, and the rest is history (chronicled in Anthony DeCurtis's excellent lines notes) that leads from the glory days of Chess Records to Guy's early breakout recordings for Vanguard to his modern-day mastery. The most recent recordings often find him working with acolytes: Eric Clapton, Jeff Beck, Keb' Mo', Jonny Lang, Bonnie Raitt, Keith Richards, and John Mayer (who duets with Guy on the unreleased "I'd Rather Be Blind, Crippled & Crazy"). B.B. King, who along with Guitar Slim was Guy's most important early influence, also joins Clapton and Guy on a stirring acoustic version of John Lee Hooker's "Crawlin' Kingsnake." This set makes the argument for Guy's ever-continuing growth as a musician--not only as a player whose frenzy, improvisational instincts, and tonal control keep stretching with age, but as a stylist who was unafraid to put aside his trademark electric approach in 2003 to make the acoustic Blues Singer (represented here by "Bad Life Blues" and the Hooker tune) and to embrace primal North Mississippi juke joint music with Sweet Tea, which lends this set a pair of Junior Kimbrough covers. Guy's sole artistic weakness is his songwriting. He's never been prolific, and even in the '60s his lyrics drew on well-established clichés. But, as these performances attest, his playing's never been less than daring--and his voice knows every nuance of heartache and joy. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:

This Buddy Guy DVD is a Must!.......2007-04-16
"Messin' with the Kid" and "Come On This House" are also gems from Montreux in 1978. On the first two tunes in 1974 they were essentially backing Muddy Waters (as they did in the 1950s) but here they are stars in their own right after the release of their early 1970s hit LP. It is great and features "Fast Fingers" Jimmy Dawkins on second Guitar (his only ever early video clip as far as I know! He is also featured on the recent Delmark release "Tail Dragger"). He plays a better solo on "Messin' With The Kid" than Buddy!
"Sweet Little Angel", a Robert Nighthawk hit and B.B. King tune recorded many times (B.B.'s most famous version: "Live At The Regal")has been done many times by Buddy too. This one is done at Montreux in 1992. I like his version on the "Real Deal" DVD with the SNL Band. This however, is also a strong version.
"Damn Right, I Got The Blues" is from Buddy's comeback period commencing in the early 1990s when there was a short Blues Revival period following the death of SRV. We are still at Montreux in 1998 and the band cooks for this performance. It is great.
"Drowning On Dry Land", "Tramp",and "Mustang Sally" are from Montreux again in 2002. It is important to note that these are NOT the performances issued last year with the Carlos Santana package. These are good, but in all honesty, the band on the Santana set is much better, for one thing the keyboardist from Otis Rush's band is magnificent. Buddy does the Buddy thing at the end and sings without a mike when it fails.
The final two performances are acoustic, something he has added to his shows since the middle 1990s. The performance of "What I'd Say", since Ray Charles has died, is particularly interesting. The solo acoustic "Louise McGhee" from 2004 closes the set.
The 75 minute documentary with this DVD is also a must to see. OK, most of it we have heard many times over the years on other releases, about going to Chicago (he remembers the day in September), and meeting Muddy Waters who fed him and so on. This is all well done and presented and you can watch this many times. The snippets of performances are what really shines here. "Red House" with Joe Satriani is cool and the clips of him (I think it's at Antones!!! In Dallas!) of "The Things I Used to Do" and others we wish they would release that whole set!!!!
Interesting final note: this DVD like so many Blues DVDs in the last 5 years or so (AFBF 3 Vols; Albert King in Sweden and more)was produced by Janie Hendrix and Experience Hendrix Productions. Janie Hendrix is not Jimi's daughter if you are interested. Jimi's father Al remarried and Janie was his stepdaughter from his second marriage.
BUDDY GUY DVD MUST HAVE FOR ALL FANS.......2007-04-16

Buddy Holly appeared, burned like a flare for a year and a half, and disappeared, leaving behind nothing that wasn't heartfelt. Listening to "Peggy Sue," "Well...All Right," "Words of Love," and, especially, "Everyday" (voice, acoustic guitar, bass, celesta, knee-slaps...perfect!), one can't help but marvel at the lyrical openness, the taste, and the restraint of the music. Those are qualities generally learned over time, which, of course, was in short supply for Holly, who died five months into his 22nd year. Buddy Holly isn't generally thought of as a sage, but you can learn a lot from these songs. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:
If yer a Holly Fan, you NEED THIS COLLECTION!.......2007-06-08
If you haven't heard Buddy Holly, get this CD to see what you're missing and why he was taken WAY TOO EARLY in his life.

Brilliant.......2007-05-11
Most fans know that a couple of months before his tragic and untimely death, Holly recorded a practice tape in his apartment, which was later found and the songs were dubbed and released as singles in the 1960s. What some people don't realize is that Norman Petty (Holly's ex-manager) did is own versions of these songs which, in my opinion, were much nearer to how the songs would have ended up had Buddy Holly lived to record them himself. These were also released in the 60s but weren't as popular as other versions. I first heard Petty's versions in the late 80s and have been trying to get them on CD ever since, so you can imagine my absolute delight, when these are the versions of What to Do; Crying, Waiting, Hoping; Peggy Sue Got Married and Learning the Game that came blasting out of my stereo upon playing this CD.
As well as some of the big hits, there are some of Holly's lesser known songs, which is the reason I purchased the CD. Yes, there are many brilliant songs that could have also been included here, but with someone with the talent that Buddy Holly had, I guess there's always going to be someone disappointed that a particular song isn't included.
In my opinion, this CD is a MUST HAVE for any Buddy Holly fan.
Why Re-dubbed Tracks?.......2007-04-17
Take it from a Buddy Holly freak..........2007-03-20
The music never fades away.......2007-03-07
The first few tracks of the first disc are covered with energy-driven rockabilly flair and Elvis-like vocals. From the instrumental "Holly Hop," "Rock Around With Ollie Vee," and a rendition of Chuck Berry's "Brown Eyed Handsome Man," Buddy gets the listener's feet tapping. However, it is his "That'll Be the Day" and "Peggy Sue" that many are familiar with. But listening to his "Words of Love," one can see that Holly was indeed with the Beatles when they recorded their version on Beatles For Sale as well as "Crying, Waiting, Hoping" on their BBC live recording.
The second disc sounds the most timeless. Several of the songs have a folk-like quality, "Well Alright" and "Wishing." "Think it Over" has the Buddy Holly hiccup-vocal trait and pounding piano solo. And "Early in the Morning" is the most soulful track on the album, where Holly sings praise with intense energy and execution. But the highlight of this disc thus far is the legendary and sentimental "True Love Ways."
In essence, Buddy Holly and his counterpart and influence, Elvis Presley, were the predecessors of rock and roll music, but Holly's contribution to this genre of music helped to influence young musicians. Hence this is definitely a collection that all rock and roll fans should own as well as those who enjoy listening to how popular music has evolved.

The title's baloney. Sure, some of Buddy Guy's most blistering guitar playing has been captured on his '90s recordings for Silvertone, but with albums like Muddy Waters's 1964 Folk Singer and his own 1967 solo debut A Man & the Blues on his résumé, Guy's status as a Chicago blues giant was assured long before his 1991 comeback Damn Right, I've Got the Blues. Nonetheless, that tune, the instrumental tribute "Remembering Stevie" (for the late guitar-slinger Vaughan), "Five Long Years," and the previously unissued "Miss Ida B" testify that at age 65 Guy still possesses rare depth and fire. His singing is big and soulful, capable of cheerleading a party or hurtling down to the depths of Delta blues heartache. His six-stringing remains wildly inventive and unpredictable, even on slight numbers like "She's a Superstar." And the inclusion of blatant stabs at the pop charts such as his "Midnight Train" duet with Jonny Lang take nothing away from the passion he puts into true blues performances like "I Need Your Love So Bad" and "Innocent Man," leftovers from earlier sessions that surface here. Baddest or not, this CD spotlights one of our greatest bluesmen in fine form. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:

The Chicago blues legend's recent divorce is weighing on his mind, if "Somebody's Been Sleeping in My Bed" and "Now You're Gone" are to be believed. That's bad for Buddy Guy, but good for his fans, who, on these contemplative, regretful numbers, get treated to some of Guy's most sweetly improvisational and melodic guitar since his '60s hallmark A Man and the Blues. There's slash 'n' burn, too, as he gunfights with Carlos Santana on "I Put a Spell on You" and squeezes pure heart from his strings teaming with John Mayer on "I've Got Dreams to Remember." Guy also plays prettily and trades vocals with Tracy Chapman on a rote but right "Ain't No Sunshine," although Robert Randolph and Keith Richards are slight on "Lay Lady Lay" and "The Price You Gotta Pay," respectively. Guy hasn't cut this many classics in a while, but he channels enough raw, emotional sensitivity to make the oldies sound like they're pumping fresh blood. --Ted DrozdowskiCustomer Reviews:

If "Sweet Tea," Buddy's much-heralded previous album, was the raw, tortured sound of an ancient bluesman wrestling with the devil and evil women, his latest release finds him in sunnier spirits -- sort of.
He's still ruing lost loves, of course, both on the opening track, "Now You're Gone," and later on with the anxious "Somebody's Been Sleeping In My Bed." But then he's off like a hound dog, attacking Wilson Pickett's "Ninety Nine and One Half" and "What Kind of Woman Is This" with incredible fire. Both songs are filled with grooves from a bygone era and worth multiple listens.
Razor-sharp solos cut through most of the songs, including the rollicking "On A Saturday Night" and the Carlos Santana joint wah-wah fest that is "I Put A Spell On You."
The second half of the album regretfully meanders. A duet with Tracy Chapman on "Ain't No Sunshine" inexplicably fails to catch fire, and Buddy clearly stumbles on a mawkish cover of "Lay Lady Lay" and "I've Got Dreams to Remember." Minor quibbles, though. Buddy's inviting us in for a jam session, and it would foolish to turn him down.
Smoother Guy Tells Us To "Bring 'Em In".......2007-06-04
Guy does some interesting covers, and has some high-powered guest stars on this record. He covers "I Put A Spell On You," "Lay Lady Lay(Guy covers Dylan?)" "Cheaper To Keep Her," and " Do Your Thing." Joining him ove various cuts are Carlos Santana, Keith Richards, and John Mayer.
Guy's playing is a lot more subdued on this record, but it's no less compelling or thrilling. Guy always delivers the goods, and "Bring 'Em In" is no exception. This is definitely worth checking out.
