Few bands of the 1960s retained as much a sense of the roots of rock and roll as did Creedence Clearwater Revival. Their music is rife with country, rockabilly, and R&B influences, a combination that produced several hit singles--most of which are present on this collection. These include "I Heard It through the Grapevine," "Lodi," "Up Around the B ," "Who'll Stop the Rain," and of course "Bad Moon Rising." This is an excellent greatest-hits collection, and a perfect introduction to the music of a band that has been enduringly influential. --Genevieve Williams

CCR.......2007-06-28
An excellent greatist hits CD, I used a handful of songs to burn a CD with other related style of music.
great stuff.......2007-06-27
listening to this CD makes you realize how great john fogerty was back in the day. great songs, great sound.
Gets me going in the morning.......2007-06-27
I've been listening to this CD for 2 weeks in my car on the way to work.
Soundtrack of an era.......2007-06-15
This is an excellent compilation of CCR's tunes from the late 60s, early 70s. There's a reason why Credence tunes kept popping up in movies and commercials. It's great music and evocative of the era from which it comes. No need for me to review the individual tunes; anybody with a radio has head most of them. A must-have for any music fan.

Back In Time.......2007-05-16
Close your eyes and you're listening to records again in High School. Just as good as I had remembered. How sad that he died so young, so talented.
Great Album.......2007-03-23
Best compilation of his work that I could find. Excellent price as well.
"It's what we've done/That makes us what we are.".......2007-03-12
Jim Croce was at the peak of his talents when a tragic plane crash ended his life in 1973. The majestic "I Got A Name" had yet to be released, but when it did, it defined Jim Croce's short but brilliant stardom.
"Like a fool I am and I'll always be,
I've got a dream, I've got a dream.
The can change their minds, but they can't change me,
I've got a dream, I've got a dream.
I know I can share it if you want me to,
if you're going my way, I'll go with you."
That "I Got A Dream" was not written by Croce hardly matters...it defined a free spirit that looked for others to join him on his quest. Afterwards, "Time In A Bottle" was plucked for re-issue of from his first album as a memoriam to Croce, and has become a signature song of not just the artist, but the decade he came from.
That debut album, "You Don't Mess Around With Jim," and its title song introduced to Jim Croce by way of his first hit character song. Like so many of his other story songs, Croce managed to perfectly encapsulate blue collar folksongs with a dash of humor. Songs like "Rapid Roy," "Working at The Car Wash Blues" and yet another signature song, "Bad Bad Leroy Brown," were snappy and sing-a-long exact.
There was also that everyman who had just a hint of sadness around the edges. On "Operator," Croce debates the whys and hows of a relationship that has crumbled. He also wasn't always a romantic idealist, as "Lover's Cross" sends an ex-lover off with "I guess you wanted a super guy, or maybe a super God." (The realist is counter-balanced perfectly by the shy encounter in "I'll Have to Say I Love You In A Song.")
Croce's untimely death will always leave a question mark on where his muse would have ultimately led him. He seemed on a course that would have him paralleling the likes of James Taylor, Gordon Lightfoot or Cat Stevens as vanguards of seventies male singer-songwriters. With three albums that have maintained their integrity over 30 years of time's passage, this single disc "Classic Hits" culls together a life's work that will long remind us that Jim Croce became a folk icon not just because of his early departure, but because of the brilliance and accessibility of his work.
Leroy may have been bad but............2007-01-12
Jim Croce was a giant of music who tragically seems to have fallen beneath the cracks. Great CD and one loves YOU DON'T MESS AROUND WITH JIM and BAD BAD LEROY BROWN. We need more music like this and less rap to document that true urban experience.

The popular tracks.......2006-09-29
Many greatest hits compilations by current bands are worthwhile because they owed their success to radio and their best work was released to radio. "Greatest hits" does not always equate with "best of" and this compilation is an excellent example of that. Many of these songs I truly enjoy. Do many songs better than "What A Wonderful World" exist? The man owns "Hello Dolly" and "Mack the Knife," and "La Vie en Rose" is a timeless, beautiful song. However, it is difficult to fathom songs such as "Skokiaan," "The Dummy Song" and "Chloe" were ever hits. They aren't especially good songs and I assume MCA included them because they lacked rights to better material. I agree with the reviewers, who have directed readers to other Satchmo releases. In addition to those recommendations, the one I would suggest is the "Jazz `Round Midnight" series release, simply titled "Louis Armstrong." "All-Time Greatest Hits" isn't a terrible CD, though it does not give a non-fan an idea of just how great some of Mr. Armstrong's music is.
EXCELLENT!.......2006-02-21
This cd has all my favorites! I love Louis, and all his cheesy, but happy songs. It's good car music, and backround music for when your working or eating. I LOVE IT!
Cookie Cutter Commercial.......2006-02-13
I have not listened to this CD. I must agree with another reviewer that Satchel Mouth is one of our lasting cultural icons. There's no need to talk about his-- I was about to say "mastery of the music," but it's more about soul than mastery. The music was just there. My comments have to do with the music selection. These cuts are his greatest hits all right, they're pleasant and enjoyable etc. They are AM Radio Hits on a Disc! If you love Louis' music, I encourage you to call up "Ambassador Satch" and listen to a few of those cuts, too. That music or his "W.C. Handy" disc and some others tell the tale of his music better than Mack the Knife, much as I--and you, no doubt--enjoy it. Give them a spin and enjoy the real roots of Louis. Even the re-mastered "Original Hot Five" and "Hot Seven" discs--cut in the 20s--are great. You might like these "not for everybody" less commercial discs even better!
Satch rocks.......2005-09-21
There's no one like him but this is just a small slice of the man. Next time I'll be looking for a larger perspective. It's ok, the sound is no great shakes but no music collection is complete without an Satch cd.
SATCHMO!.......2005-09-14
Louis Armstrong is one of the greats. He practically invented New Orleans jazz (and now with Katrina, we think about how special this music is). This album has all the best tunes. "What a Wonderful World"- his classic. I like his "Blueberry Hill" even better than Fats Domino's (Or Richie Cunningham's)
This is just great music, especially if you are entertaining a special lady and want to show your sophistication and your tender side.

Amazon.com essential recording
Curiously, yet not surprisingly given the enormity of his sway, Billie Holiday's greatest vocal influence was "Pops"--Louis Armstrong, whose trumpet was his first signature (though he's often credited with being the first great jazz singer as well). One hears Armstrong in Holiday's sense of phrasing, timing, and the warmth she invests in a lyric. This package, containing such touchstone Holiday renderings as "I Cried for You," "Body and Soul," and "When a Woman Loves a Man" (poetic, given the fact that Billie was notoriously unlucky at love), also boasts her signature song, "God Bless the Child." Her accompanists are a hall-of-fame lot, including trumpeters Roy Eldridge and Buck Clayton; saxmen Lester Young (with whom she had a close relationship), Ben Webster, Johnny Hodges, and Harry Carney; drummers Cozy Cole and Jo Jones; bassists John Kirby and Walter Page; and her frequent pianist, Teddy Wilson. --Willard Jenkins
Customer Reviews:
Biilie's phrasing was a heart-to-heart with the whole world--and no one ever wanted to go home.......2007-07-08
Billie Holiday could sing jazz and the blues unlike any other singer. Ever. Her voice was the ultimate instrument which could convey all the sorrows of her personal life as she sang about life, love and the pain of being discriminated against because she was African-American. We will never see another quite like Billie; this CD of thirteen of Billie's greatest hits from Sony doesn't even begin to scrape the surface of what this remarkably talented lady could do.
The CD track set begins with a number that's actually sassy as well as jazzy; Billie sings of how Emily Brown's "comin' to town;" but it's "Miss Brown to you." Listen for Benny Goodman on clarinet and Roy Eldridge on trumpet. Teddy Wilson does a great job on piano, too. Even though Billie was only 20 when this was recorded, she was already working with the best!
"What A Little Moonlight Can Do" gets a breakneck pace and a jazzy interpretation that would make any jazz artist green with envy. Billie's voice is light and clear as a bell; yet she imparts all the right emotions to her audience. Once again, Billie recorded this with The Teddy Wilson Orchestra. Teddy plays piano; Benny Goodman plays clarinet and Roy Eldridge plays trumpet. And ooh, how they jam!
"I Cried For You" gives Billie the chance to sing of how she cried for a man who left her--but she no longer cares for him and she won't waste one minute more worrying about that loser. The musicians work wonders before Billie even comes in; but when Billie comes in the number soars and Billie takes flight! Billie imparts the sense of all the pain in her past and how she's happy to have found a new man who loves her more. Teddy Wilson again plays piano; and listen for Harry Carney on both the clarinet and the baritone saxophone. Excellent!
"Billie's Blues" stuns you with its sublime treatment of the blues; Billie wrote this number and Artie Shaw himself plays clarinet! Billie sings about how her man treats her so poorly; and you believe every word she sings--she's THAT good at sharing her feelings from the depths of her soul.
"I Can't Get Started" is a number recorded live when Billie performed at The Meadowbrook Ballroom in Cedar Grove, New Jersey with Count Basie & His Orchestra. Despite the passage of time and the surface noise on this track, I distinctly feel everything Billie put into this song. Billie was unlucky in love and the pain of this problem helps her to deliver "I Can't Get Started" as if the lyrics were a intimate, personal and very private confession to you from the bottom of her heart. Wow.
"God Bless The Child" was one of Billie's most famous signature songs; and she delivers this with all her might. Billie sings so well because she truly means every word of the lyrics. This is not just another chanteuse singing a ballad; this is Billie Holiday once again sharing her most intimate feelings with her audience. Roy Eldridge plays trumpet and I predict you will enjoy this number very, very much.
"Gloomy Sunday" became associated with many a suicide; anyone deep in despair and hopelessness can identify with "Gloomy Sunday." Billie sings this so well because of the countless times she experienced these very emotions in her private life. "The Very Thought Of You" swings ever so slightly to infuse this ballad with just the right amount of energy and romantic effect. Billie's excellent diction, coupled with her light and clear voice, lets her perform "The Very Thought Of You" with twice the panache that any other singer could ever have infused into it.
The CD track set ends with the classic "Body And Soul." Billie sings of how she wants a man who doesn't love her in return. Billie sings from the bottom of her heart as she draws upon her personal pain from unrequited love. As always, Billie's delivery is flawless.
The liner notes include an informative essay by Timme Rosenkrantz; and the black and white pictures of Holiday are very tastefully arranged. The song credits and recording dates are there for you, too.
We will never again see another Billie Holiday. During her all too brief life she gave us more than most entertainers and "celebrities" do in a full lifetime. We are so much richer for Billie sharing her endless talents with us; and fortunately we can continue to experience her talents on CD for ages to come.
Beautiful.......2007-01-22
Billie Holiday is an amazing artist and I am proud to have her CD.
Fave Jazz Album!.......2005-05-27
Every tune is fab! Thankfully, the remastering has not diminished the old scratchy sound typically found in recordings from this era.
This is why I hate most modern jazz. This has genuine feeling, a raw sound, natural flow, and catchy licks--things lacking these days, IMO.
Pick this up if you are not a huge jazz collector, but just wish to add something worthwile to your otherwise ecclectic collection of music.
Early greats from Lady Day.......2005-04-30
I heard this CD while I was walking around Borders and just had to have it. These are early recordings - the music is fresh and joyous - the vocals are superb. I especially love the recordings of "Miss Brown To You," "What a Little Moonlight Can Do" (a treat), "Some Other Spring" and my very favorite, "I Can't Get Started." I have other Holiday recordings. However, this is the one I play again and again. I only wish that it had "Good Morning Heartache" on it. Oh, well.
A great place to start, an album with a special treat!.......2005-03-11
Almost everything Billie Holiday recorded, and maybe everything Billie recorded before 1941, like these sides, was great. Certainly, this collection doesn't have any of the very important work Billie Did during WWII for Commodore, nor does it have some of th exciting Jazzy recordings Billie did for Verve in the late 1940s and 1950s. Nor are any of the outstanding live performances by Billie for Jazz at the Philharmonic or in her Carneige Hall concerts on this CD.
With Billie who recorded for about 30 years on a lot of labels, the tendency was, particularly back in the days of LPs, for every owner of some Billie material to put out whatever they could crip together as Billie's greatest hits.
I have to say that I was introduced to Billie's greatest work, that in the 1930s, by owning this collection on Vinyl. This is nice fun and engaging music. On some of the great standards, she really makes it. Like all of her recordings for Columba and its ancestors back then, John Hammond Sr, gathers together some of the masters of Black and white swing Jazz to join her. Very shortly after she started recording, the greatest names in Jazz would flock to her sessions and play on her recordings for litte because of the innovation and creativity Billie showed as a jazz creator in her own right.
One special treat here is "I can't get started" with the Count Basie Orchestra. Billie was the first female singer with Count Basie's band, but because she was booked to Columbia and the Count had been shanghied by Decca, there were no studio recordings of Billie singing with the Basie Orchestra. This is an enormous loss to human culture. "I can't get started" is one of the two air checks (recordings made off of radio broadcasts) we have of Billie with the Baseities. The other "Swing it Brother Swing" is available on an album with air checks from a Basie broadcast from the Savoy Ballroom.
I really love the way her singing interplays with the backing particularly from the reed section, and love the sinuous solo Lester takes which is more mellow and romantic than the one he takes in the small group Billie Holiday recording of "I can't get started."
All of this is nice music. If you are not ready to take the plunge and get everything from the 1930s and early 1940s (to be followed by everything from the 1940s and then most of the stuff from the 1950s) this is as good as any place else to start. Nice fun, wonderful music, great jazz in both her voice and in the way that the sidemen swing in her honor.

The Bees Knees.......2007-05-13
This is a great album. It has all of the Mills Bros. Favorites and the recordings are clear and well produced. If you buy one Mills Brothers album, this is the one to have. I'd also recommend Command Performance as a great record.
Classic!.......2006-11-17
I bought this album for my 82 year-old grandmother who hadn't heard this music in decades. Needless to say she loved it. Surprisingly though I love listening to it too. Great voices and innocent writing. It is good to listen to pioneers and see where Black music has gone through the decades. Great buy!
"22 Great Hits by The Mills Brothers".......2005-09-09
I purchased this CD because it included several songs I had wanted for a long time, but upon listening to the entire disc, I was very pleasantly surprised to recognize other songs I liked that I didn't know were by the Mills Brothers, and also some songs I'd never heard at all but liked immediately. The Mills Brothers have such a nice, easy-going style, and the quality of their musicianship comes through in each and every song. The album also covers their very long career - from about 1929 right up through the 1960s - and though the styles may change, the level of their quality is always top-notch. I highly recommend this album to anyone who enjoys songs from those eras.
Not Quite.......2005-02-22
I would like to learn how singers, not just the Mills Brothers, can record songs for a certain record company, collect their royalties and then some years later re-record them (after their old contract is up?) and come up with a tired lackluster "too-good-to-be-true" compilation that doesn't match the first versions at all in performance. But here you have it. If you have no recollection of the originals, these will do for you; if you're looking for the old orchestrations (the guitar should fall in right here) and gusto, forget it. Try another compilation.
familiar melodies, wonderful harmonies.......2004-06-30
The Mills Brothers started back in 1922, and their musical magic lasted through generations of music lovers. This CD was released in 1985, and I imagine the recordings hail from the 1957-81 period, when Herb, Harry, and Don (pictured on the cover) worked as a trio, appearing on popular TV shows and touring the country. Though the sound reflects a little age, it is nevertheless quite good.
In this compilation, you get updated versions of their first huge hit from 1931, "Tiger Rag", which features some terrific scat singing, their biggest mega-hit from '43, "Paper Doll", and their last # 1 hit from '52, "Glow Worm", as well as their last single to hit the charts in 1968, "Cab Driver".
One of my favorite songs is "Daddy's Little Girl", and their rendition is fabulous, and makes the most of its glorious melody and sweet, sentimental lyrics. Other choice tracks are "Lazy River, the wistful "You Always Hurt the One You Love", and "Cooney Island Washboard", which features some superb honkey tonk piano playing.
Smooth and lighthearted, this is truly great American music. The Mills Brothers were musical pioneers, and deserve their legendary status and their title as "America's Musical Ambassadors to the World"
Total running time is 58'40.

For just one number.......2006-11-13
I ordered this CD just to listen to one number on it. However when you listen to Cleo you don't stop at one number. On the 2 CDs you get all of Cleo and the range of her numbers and voice is always outstanding. For long varied listening this is excellent.
Dame Cleo is the tops!!!!!!!!.......1999-09-19
An incredibly versatile singer! Cleo can go from swinging jazz to stately showtunes with amazing ease. This collection showcases all sides. She really swings on the Ellington tunes: "I'm Beginning To See The Light" and "It Don't Mean A Thing" among them. Her scat-singing is on par with Ella and Sarah. Good enough to make a silly song like "Birdsong" listenable. Then she shifts into Sondheim territory and turns in one of the best "Send In The Clowns" I have ever heard. A gifted writer, her "He Was Beautiful" is simply beautiful. She is almost bluesy on the heart-wrenching "I Loves You Porgy" and "Bill" from Showboat is a showstopper.
It is criminal that Cleo is not more universally renowned and revered. I recently saw her perform in Glendale, CA and at 70+ she is still a dynamic, mesmerizing performer. This collection is a great overview of her career and it will undoubtedly whet your appetite for more.
Superb performance in a wide range of music.......1999-09-03
This two-CD set shows the breadth and depth of Cleo Laine's range. While I'd prefer more of her "scat" works in a "Best of..." album, when she does it, it does you (i.e., Turkish Delight). This album is better appreciated after seeing Dame Cleo in concert with her husband and three piece back-up (ala Santa Fe in July). Witnessing her style, grace, the mesh of the ensemble, and the perfection of her performance is a thrill that can draw you into this album and help you fully appreciate the wealth of this music.
She IS beautiful!.......1999-08-20
I can't believe that just a few years ago I never heard of this beautiful lady and today Im big fan of hers, with 40 albums in my collection! I saw her live on two occasion and she was always sensational! This album contains material recoreded for RCA - its the creme of the last 25 years since Dame Cleo became star outside of her native England and the body of work of a mature singer in a full prime. The new songs are duets with her daughter Jacqui, very moving and nice in their way but of course its Cleo that shines here, with suport of some first-rate guests. For those who are interested in her earlier albums I recommend "The British sessions" since its unbelievable strong album and represents Dame Cleo as she was when she was younger and full of fire!
THE VERY BEST OF THE VERY BEST.......1998-10-22
This is so true !!! With tunes like IT DON'T MEAN A THING (do wa do wa do wa) is a real classic and shows off Cleo's vocal range. TURKISH DELIGHT is a real delight, this lady can scat. A little bit of Porgy and Bess is showcased by Gershwin and there is some Sondheim, I REMEMBER and SEND IN THE CLOWNS. This is the Very Best of the Best. Buy this one today !!! And own the Very Best !!! You will enjoy the saxophone solos also, by John Dankworth, (Cleos husband).

Customer Reviews:
The family tradition is strong here.......2004-10-12
Hank's has always shown the influence of his father while being distinct from it. The influence is most obvious in the many covers of his father's songs (albeit done in Junior's own style) and the many songs that are, in one way or other, about his father. On this album, the family influence is stronger than ever. There are covers of Kaw-liga and Move it on over, while there are two songs about his father - The blues man and If you don't like Hank Williams. His father also gets mentioned in Dinosaur.
All those tracks are great but the standout track here is the title track, a superb ballad about how some old habits can be broken more easily than others. Here I am again and Won't it be nice are other excellent ballads. Hank gets on his soapbox in The American way. Hank sings about the south (as he often does) in All in Alabama.
This is yet another classic album from Hank, mixing country, blues and rock in his own unique way.
Best Album.......2003-04-25
This album in my opinion is one of Hank's best. The song "Old Habits" is one of my all time fanorite Hank songs. "Dinosaur" is right next to it. You can't go wrong by buying it. The whole album is great it tells alot about Hank and how he thinks about things. This has to be the appitomy of hank's albums.
This is the real Hank Williams Jr in my opinion.......2003-01-09
It just shows how great he can sing country music when he leaves the rock guitar out. He's good both ways but great this way. I recommend everybody whos a fan of him or country music buy this. Also if you liked the movie Living Proof: The Hank Williams Jr Story and you loved the songs that played in the background then you'll really love it cause its got three songs from the movie on it. 1. Here I am Fallin' Again 2. The Blues Man 3. All in Alabama. All great songs Its simply a GREAT album.
HANK IS THE MAN.......2002-07-14
this is an awsome album.my favorite song is ALL IN ALABAMA.there are no bad songs on this(A HABIT HANK HAS BEEN IN).alot of feeling went into this album.BUY IT,HEAR IT,LOVE IT. its that simple.thanx hank.

whiskey bent & hell bound.......2007-02-24
I real enjoyed listening to this cd. There wasnt one song that I didnt like. If you like hank williams jr. you will like this cd.
Pure Hank.......2005-08-02
This is pure Hank from the days when we all didn't have to worry about being politically correct. It's an oldie but a goodie.
Hank The Great.......2005-03-29
There ain't much to talk about if you'll talk about Hank. His sound is unique and matchless, and this album is one of his diamonds.Listening to this album I can almost see myself in a trashy bar sippin' from my glass of Old Jack. Yeeeowww!! Pure and outlaw country! just the way it should always be.
Great Album!!.......2004-06-10
This is where Hank really starts coming true to form as we know him today! Family tradition was a good album but this one is great! Filled with great hits, any Hank fan will truly appreciate this album which includes Whiskey Bent and Hell Bound, O.D.'d in Denver, etc.
Vintage Hank from 1979.......2004-03-31
While Kenny Rogers (of whom I am also a huge fan) was dominating the commercial aspect of country music with songs such as The Gambler and She believes in me, Hank was doing things his way, just as he always has done since he left MGM, with his unique blend of country, rock and blues. Of course, plenty of others have blended these three, including Elvis in the fifties, but Hank's blend is very much his own.
On this album, the my favorite tracks (but not by much) are the title track, Women I've never had and a brilliant duet with Waylon Jennings, The conversation, about Hank's father. There's also a great revival of White lightning, which was written by the Big Bopper but provided George Jones with a top ten American pop hit. Hank's cover is very different from George's but I love them both. Hank also does an excellent cover of Gregg Allman's Come and go blues.
Considering that Hank never did things the Nashville way, it is perhaps surprising that he had as much success as he did - but the quality of his albums, including this one, ensure that he deserved all the success that he had.

"Classic Hits" from Anka's 1973-1977 period.......2002-03-19
Paul Anka has had a phenomenal career, both as a singer/composer and as a sometime actor during his five plus decades in the entertainment industry. "Classic Hits" contains a sampling of this talented performer's remarkable career, with a majority of these classics recorded during his 1973-1977 tenure with United Artists. Four of the hits contained in this collection feature duets with Odia Coates, including the gospel-like "I Don't Like To Sleep Alone", as well as their number one smash "(You're) Having My Baby" and the smooth "One Man Woman/One Woman Man". "(I Believe) There's Nothing Stronger Than Our Love", another major hit for both Anka and Coates, is included here as well, as is one of Paul's most memorable and beloved hits, complete with a Frank Sinatra-like vocal performance with "Times Of Your Life". "My Best Friend's Wife", although somewhat overrepetitive, is still an enjoyable tune, nevertheless. "Anytime (I'll Be There)" has its melancholy moments, but fits in here with ease. Three "newer" renditions of familiar Anka classics are included here too - "My Way", which has been recorded by dozens of artists, including Sinatra and Elvis Presley. This version is brilliantly played out in grand Paul Anka fashion. The peppy "A Steel Guitar And A Glass Of Wine" and the downtrodden "Let Me Try Again" complete this stellar sample collection, courtesy of an international superstar that is Paul Anka. But, since "Classic Hits" is geared more toward the casual Anka fan, the Anka afficianado will find "30 Years Of Hits" more to their liking, as that compilation contains twice as many songs covering Anka's earlier (and later) period(s). "Classic Hits" is still an essential collection all the while, and thus belongs in any music fan's CD library. Make sure it's included in your purchases today, before it becomes a lost treasure!
