The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

4 out of 5 stars still fresh after all these years.......2005-10-01

I owned this album some 20 years ago.. guess that makes me old... Accidentaly ran into it in a shop and bought it. Really happy I did since after more than 20 years all those songs still sound catchy and fresh. If you like Costello, Graham Parker and all those other great 80's pop-post punk singers you will not be disappointed - on the contrary - you'd wish we would hear some more of those forgotten artists on radio and television

5 out of 5 stars Wonderfully Quirky.......2005-01-21

I think that you could never sum up Don Dixon with any one word, but those two words in my title probably come closest. I first heard Praying Mantis (his claim to fame as it were) when I was in college. After the enjoyment I got out of that one song, I decided to look into this guy a bit more. I was pleased with what I found on this album. If you expect songs all sounding like Praying Mantis, then don't bother, but if you want to hear a wide array of music that highlights people playing music to have fun, then this is the album for you.

5 out of 5 stars Old fan of Don Dixon.......2003-07-17

Having been a big fan of Don from his days with Arrogance (never heard of them, if you're not from NC, I'm not surprised), I do not think he can do anything wrong. Don is an amazing singer, bass player and producer (he was REM's first producer). He has worked with such artists as Mike Cross (reccomend him), Marshall Crenshaw, and Hootie and The Blowfish.

4 out of 5 stars Skewed Pop.......2003-06-12

I had never heard of Don Dixon until I saw the Praying Mantis video on MTV back in the mid-eighties, when catchy bubble gum pop was king. I fell in love with the song on the spot, the way you do with a great pop song, and ran out to buy the cassette. The rest of the album disappointed me at first, I just didn't get it. It looked like pop, sounded like pop, but had a different feel to it, like a skewed reflection. The more I listened, the more I liked it. Eventually I couldn't get the tunes out of my head. The real standouts here for me were Southside Girl, the title track, Skin Deep, and Andy-whose subject matter of a gay bathroom cruiser was extremely provocative and honestly a little shocking back then. Don's twangy guitars, warm gravelly voice and infectious, blues-heavy arrangements made up for the bizarreness of his lyrics. Or maybe it was that skewed reflection that hooked me after all, in the end. As CD's became the IN thing, all my tapes got put away. It was years before I heard this album again, but not one went by that I didn't catch myself humming a song from this album at least once. It's an underrated classic.

4 out of 5 stars PRODUCER, MUSICIAN, PERFORMER, VOCALIST, AND SONGWRITER............2002-09-04

Now this is what I call an interesting artist. And I don't use artist lightly. This cat has done it all. ..."Most of the girls like to dance" was Dixon's debut in 1985 as a solo artist. This album was essentialy songs that Dixon raided from the vaults from demos he cut back in the early 80's. So this is kind of an early best of cd. Right out of the chute Dixon had his first single from the first song here called "Praying Mantis". This is a bouncy and catchy little pop number that deserved it's single status. Trouble is, I never heard this song when it came out. Half the reason is because I live in Oklahoma...nuff said. But even if you had some cool radio stations where you lived, chances are this didn't last long. But this song and album, along with Dixon caught on big in Europe at the time. It just never translated to success across the Atlantic. This cd has a few other pop gems like "Southside Girl", "Last Rites" which has a guitar that has a bubbly sound like it's being played underwater..literally. And his very good cover of Nick Lowe's "Skin Deep". A song that really suits Dixon's wonderful Ray Charles like singing voice to a tee. I can't emphasize enough how good a singer he is. Another pop gem off of this is "Swallowing Pride", which is one of my alltime favorite Dixon tunes. This sounds a lot like some of the music that Elvis Costello and some of the early Pub Rockers like Lowe, Billy Bremner, and Graham Parker were making in the early 80's. I guess that's what drew me to this artist's music. Because it doesn't get any better than those guys. This is a good album. It's not great, but it's a good place to start listening to this fine artist....

4 out of 5 stars 1 OF THE BEST REMIX CDS.......2002-06-17

Being a true Pink fan, I waited with high anticipation for the release of this maxi single also along with the fact that MOST GIRLS is one of my favorite songs. Once the CD came out and I bought it, I was kinda surprised that there were only 2 actual remixes of MOST GIRLS but was not at all disappointed once I actually heard them. THe 1st song is one of those great party dance-making ya kinda songs. It is rather long and it changes beats which is amazin. The next remix is not as good as the first but is not bad either. The next 2 songs are 2 of my favorites with the acapella and Instrumental version. I not only appreciate but I respect artists who include Instrumentals and accappellas on their CDs. The last song called THERE YOU GO the remix is something that I had heard a while ago on pop radio and is a damn good remix of a damn good song so gon head and buy this maxi-single.

4 out of 5 stars Something for the DJs..........2002-04-17

If you're a DJ, I would recommend this Maxi CD, it has many tracks to offer, just look at the track listing.

Track 01: Most Girls (Skribble & Anthony Acid Club Mix)(8:54)- Good track mixed by DJ Skribble & Anthony Acid. Great strings & keyboards that would keep the party goin'. No DJ should not go on without this track.

Track 02: Most Girls (Skribble & Anthony Acid's Hard Girls Dub)(7:32)- This track is bad. Soft, not really danceable. You can barely hear Pink's vocals, it's in the background faintly. I recommend you skip this track.

Track 03: Most Girls (Instrumental) (5:03)- An instrumental of Most Girls. Great even without Pink's vocals. Sounds kinda classical, and with listening closely, you could hear most instruments.

Track 04: Most Girls (Acapella) (4:30)- This is another track for those DJs, for remixing though (since it doesn't have any vocal instruments, like acapellas by boy bands.)

Track 05: There You Go (Hani Mixshow Edit)(5:32)- Good, light, clubbish track mixed by Hani. Again something to dance to.

A good Maxi by Pink, recommended to any Pink fans & DJs.

5 out of 5 stars Shorty got everything she need- now that she has this!.......2001-05-21

Uh huh, uh huh! I think that Alecia Moore- A.K.A. Pink is possible the most talented R&B artist out there- outside of Christina, who is a little more pop than R&B, but still. Pink has THE voice. Her portion of the remake of "Lady Marmalade" totally makes the song- her sexy, scratchy voice, and well, let's face it, she just seems to keep looking better with every vid! Plus, her modesty in the behind the scenes footage shows that, as tough as she is, she still has her pride. In this cool song- also with a kickin' video- Pink talks about what she looks for in a guy- she's not most girls, she wants what she wants, and you don't get real love, BEAT IT! Pink is a great role model and a terrific singer. If you're looking for good single, you found it, if you want an amazing album, check out her debut, now hitting 2 million and counting, "Can't Take Me Home." You go, girl!

      5 out of 5 stars A Modern R&B Classic.......2001-03-23

This song is the high light off Pink's debut album "Can't Take Me Home." It's hella catchy. This is a dance song with a lot of rhythm. If you liked her first hit "There You Go", then you will like this. Pink's voice is tight. And even though this doesn't have the album version, the remixes by DJ Skribble (MTV) are just as tight. Besides her CD has a bunch of other great songs, like "Split Personality", "You Make Me Sick", "Private Show" and "Do What U Do" that you NEED to check out.

5 out of 5 stars Another hit single!.......2000-12-25

After the brilliant debut single "There you go"Pink released another excellent tune "most girls" is an excellent song. I just love it it's very catchy tune. Very reccomnded

4 out of 5 stars Shorty Can Remix "There You Go".......2001-03-26

*10 is the highest score on my rating scale and means the song, in my eyes, is a great song. Dance and cruise power refers to the ability of the song to make me want to dance or to pop it in my car radio and go cruising. Creativity refers to the ability of the remixers to add something to the song, to elevate the song to another level.

        1. MOST GIRLS RADIO EDIT--4:10

        2. MOST GIRLS X MEN VOCAL MIX--4:53 This should be titled the Xylophone remix. I'm not sure if it is a keyboard or xylophone that you hear throughout the song. Whichever it is, it takes away from this remix being called a dance remix. Creativity: 6/10, Dance and cruise power: 6/10.

        3. MOST GIRLS X MEN DUBBY--5:18 This song has a house vibe to it. It is fairly upbeat. The remixers echo or reverberate her vocals a few times which is kind of neat. Overall, a good remix. Creativity: 7.5/10, Dance and cruise power: 8/10. 4. THERE YOU GO SOVEREIGN MIX--6:20 If you buy this cd for a remix, this is the song you would be buying the cd for. This is the best remix of any of P!nk's songs that I have heard. Again there is a house flavor to this song. There is some manipulation of her vocals including repetition of key phrases from the song. Creativity: 8.5/10, Dance and cruise power: 8.5/10.

        5. ENHANCED SECTION--If you are a P!nk fan the enhanced section of the cd is well worth the cost of the cd. This part of the cd comes with the "Most Girls" video which is a good video. Additionally, there is an interview section where you can hear P!nk answer about 10 different questions ["Who influenced you musically?, What are your favorite songs on your cd?," etc.]. Lastly, there is a gallery section with several nice pics of P!nk. From my understanding, all you need to view the enhanced section is the cd rom drive, not Real Player or any similar players.

OUTCOME: I would suggest this cd for the Sovereign mix of "There You Go" and the enhanced section which contains the photo gallery, video, biography, and interview section. The remixes of "Most Girls" are fair. The X men remixes have nothing to do with the comic book characters, but is the name of the remixers [in case you are wondering].

Here is a great opera and lieder singer in a light vein. One might suspect that Thomas Hampson, famous for his high seriousness and dramatic projection, is slumming, but his glorious voice, superb vocalism, incredibly clear German diction, and infectious enjoyment give even the corniest arias a persuasive authenticity, despite occasional musical exaggerations and a certain intellectual overrefinement alien to the carefree, spontaneous Viennese idiom. Listeners familiar with these operettas may be surprised to find a baritone singing roles long associated with great tenors such as Richard Tauber and Jan Kiepura, both also operatic stars, but though the range does seem a bit high for Hampson at times, he makes them completely his own in sound, inflection, and spirit. He varies the inevitable reprise of the first verse with great imagination and vocal resourcefulness, including a magical mezza voce and a triumphantly ringing top, and captures the simplicity, piquant charm, humor, and parody of both the words and the melody. The orchestrations tend to underline the corniness of the music, but the playing is terrific. --Edith Eisler

3 out of 5 stars A bit grim and forced.......2005-09-24

Over the past twenty years Hampson has set out to prove that he can sing anything a baritone voice could wrap itself around, from Bach to Broadway. He does amazingly well, but this CD is a miss. Hampson is a lot of things, but light and smiling isn't two of them. He blusters and sometimes shouts, a far cry from the melting insouciance of echt Viennese style.

          5 out of 5 stars A "Must" Have!.......2003-10-27

Just received this glorious CD and believe it's probably the most outstandingly beautiful one I own of Mr Hampson's (and I own many). Each track is an uplifting joy! This is Hampson at his melodious best.

2 out of 5 stars Musicianship, but no sparkle.......2002-12-11

Mr. Hampson spends as much care and and craft on these songs as he would on lieder, but the results were disappointing to me. The zest and sparkle that I expect from Viennese operetta is just not there. So, my vote is for less restraint and musicianship and more "joyful abandon" in performance.

5 out of 5 stars FROM VIENNA WITH LOVE.......2000-10-25

Thomas Hampson takes us on a nostalgic trip to old Vienna as we listen to signifant works of the masters of Viennese operetta. The voice is rich, warm, and unabashedly romantic as he caresses each lyric and musical phrase with obvious affection. His "Auf der Heide bluh'n in die letzten Rosen" by Robert Stoltz and "Du bist die Welt fur mich" by Richard Tauber are tender and heart wrenching. He also embraces works by Lehar, Strauss II, Millocker, Zeller and Kalman with gusto and feeling. Of the dozens of operetta recordings I have heard in the last two or three years, none bring me more satisfaction than this generous collection by Mr. Hampson with its lyrical vocalism and lush orchestration. Just when you think it can't get any better, it does. A true delight for operetta devotees.

4 out of 5 stars Fine singing of German by a non-German.......2000-10-24

I had to take off a star only because German language operetta lyrics are almost always better sung by a singer who speaks German as their natural language. Hampson's performances of an excellent selection of highly enjoyable arias are superb, with the sole, very minor negative of the non-germanic diction. Baritone or tenor, this CD is a fine investment which you will play many times.
