Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great to Hear All those great Voices from the Past.......2007-07-05

I just wanted to confirm what the first reviewer had to say about this CD. To hear Ethyl Merman, Mary Martin, Andrea McCardle etc. singing their trademark songs brought a lot of memories from the mid-centry musical theater back again. The last song by Glynis Johns is especially poignant.
You certainly can't beat the price!

5 out of 5 stars A Good One!.......2006-11-10

This is a very good CD, mostly because it's the original artists. I've had some that were re-recorded by no name artists that were ghastly. This one is a really good one--including the sound quality. If I had one wish, I would wish it were longer!

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

5 out of 5 stars Live traditional country recordings.......2007-05-16

Please note that this is a re-issue of a CD previously tithed I'm not that lonely.

Reba has, for a long time, been one the finest singers in country music and these live recordings provide yet further proof, as if that were needed. They were recorded at Doc Severinsen's Music Showplace in Oklahoma City. No date is given but it is likely to be around 1985, given the track selection. Around that time, Reba's recordings were firmly rooted in tradition and that is reflected in these recordings. Pop fans will find nothing of interest here.

Many of the songs are those that Reba recorded during her years on Mercury. Her first MCA album, Just a little love, is represented by five tracks and there is just one more recent song - Red roses won't work now, from Have I got a deal for you? It is, of course, possible that she was singing this in concert for a while before she recorded it in the studio.

There are three songs here that have never appeared on any of Reba's studio albums, these being Up where we belong (a cover of the Joe Cocker and Jennifer Warnes classic), Islands in the stream (a cover of the Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton classic) and Open road (Hot rod guitar), a song that I've not come across elsewhere. The first two are duets featuring an un-credited male vocalist. Elsewhere, the album is filled with live versions of her early hits and album tracks including Can't even get the blues, You lift me up to heaven, Today all over again and Just a little love.

Reba's dedicated fans will no doubt want this anyway, but as an introduction to her early music, this is also excellent.

3 out of 5 stars Reba - Just a Little Love.......2006-02-24

I am a huge Reba fan but unfortunately I was not overly impressed with this cd. There were a few good songs but most were just mediocre.

Album Description

More marches, waltzes, and fox trots in this recording of the New Verbeeck Band Organ at Seabreeze Park in Upstate New York. On a hill above scenic Lake Ontario, the music of the band organ can be heard on the breezes drifting over the blue water. Twenty-three tunes bring back the sounds of summer from Seabreeze Park - the whirling carousel and prancing horses spin around to the music of childhood, and this fabulous recording captures the wonderful memories. Grab the popcorn, and come for a ride! This completely digital recording is crystal clear and an oversized insert includes pictures and fond memories of Merrick Price - to whom the album is dedicated. The last song was recorded on the carousel while it was moving - an innovative idea that captures the sensation of really being on the ride is enhanced by wearing headphones. This piece of Americana in music - a must for the audio collector, carousel enthusiast, or fan of mechanical music, is a one-of-a-kind gift item.

3 out of 5 stars carousel.......2007-01-03

Carousel Memories does not have the luster that I had expected. The music is not as clear as I would have liked, however, it does have some good qualities that make it worth while to listen.

5 out of 5 stars The Ideal Merry-Go-Round.......2005-07-18

This is a recording by and for merry-go-round lovers. It assembles 23 tracks of mostly characteristic carousel music, played upon a newly constructed band organ handmade by Belgian Johnny Verbeeck to replicate the old Wurlitzer 165 destroyed by a fire around 1995. The fire also claimed most of the carousel itself, which was rebuilt using some restored parts from the original (PTC#36). The recording site is Seabreeze Park on Lake Ontario in upper New York.

In another review I mentioned that that CD offered a partial and rather idealized carousel experience, for it could only provide the sound, and that sound was much more refined and free of ambient noise than would be encountered during an actual carousel ride. That comment applies as well to this recording, and perhaps more so, for the band organ in a typical operating carousel never sounded so good as the one here. This instrument has a remarkably lovely, sweet tone and, being brand new, is in perfect condition. The rolls used were obtained from no less a source than the Library of Congress, and represent a very choice selection.

The music itself includes mostly waltzes, marches, polkas, and one-time popular songs, such as Beer Barrel Polka, Sweet Rosie O'Grady, Liberty Bell, and Scatter-Brain. Less to be expected, but supremely apt, is the fine waltz from Richard Rodger's overture to the musical show Carousel. This last was experimentally recorded on the moving carousel, and thus provides an especially realistic auditory image.

For merry-go-round and band organ enthusiasts this recording might well occupy a place of honor in their CD collection. For those who desire a more realistic, though less ideal, recording I would recommend the old 1973 Takoma Records release "Last Chance on the Merry-Go-Round" (# A 1038), which I believe is no longer in the catalog. (Takoma Records was acquired in 1995 by Fantasy Records.) My personal copy of A 1038 is an LP, and I suspect no CD version was ever released. That recording was made at the carousel on the pier at Santa Monica, California, shortly before the pier was to be demolished. (Thus the title of the recording.) Since it was made while the carousel was actually in operation, the sounds of bystanders and children, along with the carousel drive motor are included. I don't know what ever became of that carousel or its band organ, but would guess they were moved to some collection somewhere. In any case, I have fond memories of wandering along the pier on a fine Saturday afternoon and watching and listening to the carousel and its excited young customers.

5 out of 5 stars SHE MADE ME CRY!!!.......2005-09-23

She indeed made me cry on three songs: The title cut, "He Broke Your Memory Last Night" and "If Only" one of the saddest songs I've ever heard. Reba did everything brilliantly on this CD.

5 out of 5 stars IF REBA WENT POP THEN THIS IS THE BEST OF IT!!.......2005-09-23

If Reba was going to go the pop route, this is a good example of it!! The songs are just the right blend of traditional country with contemporary production and her voice is great! Having good material always helps. This is one of her best! Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars TAKE ME BACK TO 1984 PLEASE.......2005-09-22

Actually I wasn't born yet in 1984 but when you're a Reba McEntire fan you want all of her music. In discovering her older stuff I am knocked over by the songs she used to sing and wonder why she doesn't do stuff like this any more. Except for maybe two or three songs on here, this album is a lot better than any of her new stuff. I especially like "You Are Always There For Me" and "I'm Gettin' Over You". But also noteworthy is the title track and "He Broke Your Memry Last Night". I listen to this one all the time because I really like it.

5 out of 5 stars COME AND FEEL THE LOVE!!!.......2005-09-22

This is a beautiful album!! Especially the song "Just a LIttle Love", a great tune that surpasses anything she did before or since. Its my favorite Reba song and one I wish she would sing at her concerts!! I remember going to a concert of hers back when this CD was released and she sang this...and oh, what a performance!!!

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF REBAS MOST ENGAGING CDS!!.......2005-09-22

Even the cover of the CD is beautiful!! Reba is not an especially attractive woman but made up correctly she is beautiful!! But this isn't what this review is about. Its about what is inside. What's inside is Reba doing what she does best and that is singing her heart out with good material and honest lyrics and tasteful production!! This one is a keeper!

4 out of 5 stars Disney.......2004-11-30

This cd is really good, i love all the songs. Ariel has always been my favourite disney classic. I only have one problem, the singers arn't the actual singers that were in the films, and thats abit of a dissapointment for me. I would recommend this cd but not to people who actually want to listen to the actual people.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Orchestrals.......2002-02-11

What's best about Disney's animated features, is that they contain amazing orchestral scores and songs. With this CD, one can hear the nuances of the full orchestral scores of 4 of Disney's most popular features, as played and by a full symphony and chorus.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Release of a two-fer.......2004-11-20

The person who wrote the review below is wrong : the "Alone" album was recorded and released in mono sound, in 1957. "Judy in Love" was Garland's first album recorded and released in stereo, in 1958.

The sound on this disc is spectacular. The original session tapes were used, for the best sound possible. It is glorious sound here, folks.

Pehaps the person that wrote the review below is thinking of the previous two-fer of "Judy in Love" from England, a few years back, paired with the "Judy" album. That CD sounded very flat and dry.

Get this new and improved disc, and you'll love it.

5 out of 5 stars Finally "Alone" on CD!.......2003-10-01

I just received this Judy "double bill" and I can only say it's GREAT!! "Alone" was always one of my favorite Judy albums, and I am more than pleased to have it on CD now. The sound is not stereo, as another reviewer point out, but it never was recorded in stereo. I have the old vinyl, and that's mono too, but also pretty worn, after all these years. The liner notes actually are pretty good too. The original covers are reproduced, with the original liner notes reprinted, AND some fresh liner notes about this re-issue. There, you can read that the "alone" recordings are from 1957, and that "Judy in Love" is from 1958, and was her first stereo album for Capitol.

So why is "alone" my favorite Judy album? Maybe simply because it was one of my first encounters with Judy, when I was 17 years old. I didn't realize at the time that the selection of songs is pretty unusual. It's not the repertoire she sang a lot in her live and TV shows. I love the mostly subdued pathos on this album, although she does belt it out occasionally, in her own inimitable way. The songs are about 'surviving on your own', and some times about finding your inner strength, in a bittersweet way. The album is not very cheerful, but it does make me feel good, in a sentimental way. The arrangements are very good, just right, in the 'proper' fifties style. The strings have a very warm quality, which wasn't always the case in those days. There is also a beautiful large choir singing in the background on some tracks.
Some of the songs are very unknown, which makes this album special too. Happy New Year, for instance, is a beautiful torch song, written over a very slow version of Old Lang Syne in minor key; a real gem of a song! Blue Prelude is also a great song, so don't be discouraged by the titles you may not know.
All in all, a 'must have' for any Judy fan, but also a wonderful introduction if you want to get acquainted with Judy's singing. "Judy in Love" is an excellent example of her warm joyful singing, while "Alone" gives you all those wonderful torch songs. A balanced package, with a passionate Judy in great voice!!

1 out of 5 stars Terrible sound and terrible packaging.......2003-06-27

Let me rant. This CD has 2 albums on it. 1 is mono and the other stereo!? I have these albums on records and they are both stereo. I feel ripped off. Also, these albums do not sound anywhere like the records in quality. In fact, they sound very boring and lacking of any sort of life. Judy did very big, exciting production numbers and the sound on this CD makes them sound stale and dead. I returned this CD and demanded my money back. The store clerk said I wasn't the only one. Thumbs way down.

5 out of 5 stars JUDY AT HER BEST with SPECTACULAR SOUND!.......2002-05-11

JUDY IN LOVE is perhaps Garland's greatest studio album. A superb collaboration with Judy in wonderful voice, and arranger Nelson Riddle at the top of his form. Inexplicably, this album is only now making its CD debut in the U.S. Capitol Records seemingly had no interest in releasing it themselves, so they've sublicensed it to S&P Records, who have done a terrific mixing and remastering job. Comparing the sound to a recent UK import is overwhelmingly impressive. The UK release sounds mediocre, and this new issue belies its having been recorded 44 years ago.
JUDY IN LOVE is paired with her monaural ballad album ALONE, which was arranged and conducted by Gordon Jenkins. The two albums together are a distinct contrast and yet only show the versatility and mastery of Garland. The highlight of the ALONE tracks is Jenkins' schmaltzy, yet irresistable I'VE GOT A RIGHT TO SING THE BLUES. ALONE was previously issued on CD by Capitol years ago, but has been long out of print, so this collection is a dream come true for Garland fans.

The 5 Star rating is for the recordings and the way they've been beautifully produced. It does not, however, represent a true rating for the package itself, which has been saddled with awful,
amateurish liner notes which are so poorly written that it's a blatant insult to Garland. What a shame the producers who took such care in creating such a great sounding album, didn't bring the same kind of excellence to the accompanying package. This should not detract anyone from buying this CD, but buyers looking for an interesting commentary on the legendary lady and these specific tracks will have to go elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Garland the Great.......2002-05-02

A beautiful compilation of two classic, original "Judy" albums. These are two of the six studio albums she recorded for Capitol in the fifties, and these are probably the best. While Judy's vocal tone is not at its best on "Judy in Love", the song selections and her interprative genius make up for the slight vocal imperfections. "More Than You Know", "I Am Loved" and "By Myself" are absolute delights, and are clearly definitive versions of these songs. In addition, the ballads shine with passion and tenderness. "Alone" is mostly filled with similarly tender songs, and on this one Garland is in fine, full voice throughout. "Little Girl Blue" is a particular standout, and the addition of the never before released "Then You've Never Been Blue" is a special treat for fans and newcomers. Popular singing doesn't come any better than this.

Featuring gospel singer Chris Willis, with hints of Ibiza house and deep soul, David Guetta's "Just A Little More Love" was a huge dance hit in 2001, and now it's the showpiece title track for the DJ's second full-length release. Love is filled with crackling, electro-tinged grooves, and uses an element of glitzy cheese to give the record a silly, anything-goes club vibe. Made for parties, Guetta's work is endlessly positive, ranging from the sublime, Stardust-like "People Come, People Go," to his riff on David Bowie's "Just For One Day (Heroes)." A collection of singles like this can sound thrown together, and you can hear when Guetta is coasting ("Give Me Something (Deep In My Heart)," for example). But these songs really are meant to be heard as part of a larger set, on wax just pulled out of a crate. Even the most inept DJ would have an easy time getting people dancing with this compilation in their arsenal, and depending on the dance floor's pulse, any one of these tracks could be the night's high point. --Matthew Cooke

4 out of 5 stars A Funky Dance Album To Have.......2006-09-06

David Guetta is a French Dj and Remixer that's been around for quite awhile now, but this was actually his first album, released in 2004 despite countless of singles and remixes already. The music here is more commercial then actual house music though, we got soul singers Chris Willis and Barbara Tucker and the music is a mix between diffrenet genre's like House, Soul, Electro and Pop that isn't afraid of sampling old stuff, Not surprising that Mr. Guetta scored several club hits from this album. "Just A Little More Love" was a hit in 2001 and a highlight here. "Love, Don't Let Me Go" another hit single in a simular mood 'that blends soul and dance, the exellent "Give Me Something (Deep In My Heart)" that blends 70's disco with modern house. "Just For One Day (Heroes)" a ripp-off from David Bowie's classic. "Sexy 17" that infact sound like 80's Prince singing. Towards the end of the set there are several less commercial songs, house and electro instrumentals that would have suited well on a Daft Punk or Cassius album. On this american release there are several remixes, + there are 2 versions of "Just a Little More Love" instead of the song "You" that is part of the original Euro release and "Just For One Day" instead of "Atomic Food". For all dance fans, I think this is a must have. Considering that there a few really good dance albums out there and Guetta is a very talented and original dj, you must check this one out, if you liked Modjo, Cassius or even early Roger Sanchez, you'll like David Guetta too. 4/5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Great French House!.......2005-05-03

Although this CD is over 2 years old I recently bought it and I am totally loving it as it is an awesome CD. Every track one after the other is beautifully produced and laid out. There's something about French house music and electronica that I can't get enough of. From Dimitry From Paris, Daft Punk, Cassius, Bob Sinclair and a slew of others that keep producing wonderful dance music that have retro feels to them. I especially love Give Me Something (Deep In My Heart) with the great vocals of Barbara Tucker on this album as well as the title song and Just For One Day (Heroes). Anyway check out the album and go buy it.

    5 out of 5 stars Dance with a soul--feel the love!!!!!.......2004-12-15

This is a brilliant compilation cd, whether its meant to be heard as part of a DJ club set, or just something you pop into the player when you want to hear happy, well-done, varied, and party atmosphere House. Every song is good, and some are incredible. All I had heard before getting this disc was "Just A Little More Love" via Ministry of Sound Hot 100, and I have been really impressed with it. The beat is all cub, but the lyrics are all intelligence with heart (not about drugs or sex, the two club lyric standbys that get old *quick*).

If you have doubts, chuck them and buy it!!

    5 out of 5 stars YES!!!.......2004-04-01

    This album is hottttt!!
I especially love the songs with Barbara Tucker, such as "It's Alright" and "Give me Something." Hello, it's the story of my life. Give me something... or nothing at all.
    Preach it!

4 out of 5 stars Interesting twists on dance/electronic.......2004-02-12

I first heard of Parisian DJ David Guetta (a fixture in Ibiza and Paris) on the "Pioneer: The Album Vol. 3" while living in Spain (Ibiza CDs are EVERYWHERE) with his fabulous single "Love Don't Let Me Go." After a long wait, "Just A Little More Love" is being released in North America---it's ABOUT TIME!!!. His album is a pleasing blend of styles and moods, all of it intensely danceable.

The main highlight for me was not only Guetta's fantastic mixing, but the soulful, searing vocals by gospel phenom Chris Willis (backing vocalist for Amy Grant ,CeCe Winans, Twilla Paris, Garth Brooks, and Dolly Parton among others) that made the album come alive. "Just A Little More Love" sounds like a throwback to the heyday of the `80s, with elements of funk and disco scattered throughout the driving beats. The album spawned a number of singles, including Ibiza megahit "Love Don't Let Me Go."

This North American release features an altered tracklist from the European debut, adding the Just For One Day (Heroes) remix from Guetta's new album F*** Me I'm Famous (named after an Ibiza tradition), cuts several others (Chris Willis' You, Atomic Food), and substitutes edits for several (Just a Little More Love Elektro edit, Distortion vocal edit, Just a Little More Love Wally Lopez remix edit). The majority of the thirteen songs are vocal-driven, with the exception of 133 and Lately, both instrumentals. Themes range from the noble: social reform (Can't U Feel The Change), self-empowerment (It's Alright), love and desire (the campy Sexy 17, People Come, People Go, Give Me Something, the riveting Love Don't Let Me Go, You Are The Music) and just plain fun (Distortion).

This North American release is much more geared for club play with the addition of Just For One Day and the edits/remixes. A danceable feast for the ears and refreshingly original. Remember to check out Guetta's new album F*** Me I'm Famous as well.

Music of the West and the Western movies, sung and played by the remarkable Nickel Creek Band, consisting of Chris Thile ( age 12 and now with 2 solo bluegrass mandolin albums by the age of 18), Sara Watkins (age 11 at the time),Sean Watkins (age 15), and Scott Thile (Chris' dad.) Great, vivid interpretations of America's cowboy standards, sung and played by children. Kids love to hear other kids singing, and adults will be entertained, and astonished by the singing and playing abilities of the Nickel Creek Band. (By the way, 6 years later, they're still together, and making a bluegrass (newgrass) record of their own music, produced by bluegrass great Alison Krauss.

5 out of 5 stars Great CD for Little Kids.......2007-06-08

It is not often that one can hear their favorite band singing as little kids. That is exactly what you get on this CD. Nickel Creek, known for it's folksy, soft melodies made this CD when they were all between 10 and 14. Now, if you are not into little kids singing high notes, then maybe this CD isn't for you. My niece and nephew love it. They even want to be cowboys someday too! If you love Nickel Creek, its worth it to get this CD.

4 out of 5 stars Nickel Creek were already brilliant musicians as pre-teens.......2007-02-14

This CD is for the Nickel Creek fan who

A)already has all the other cds, and
    B) Enjoys the "traditional Country/Western roots" that their music evolved from...or
C)is a parent or grandparent wanting some 'safe' and fun music to share with kids with NO element of today's 'trashy' side....

They are doing classic "gene Autry' style cowboy tunes from an era long since past....the band members are all between 10 and 12 years old on this album.(except a dad who helps out) Their performance is consistently flashy and their playing and singing could only be called 'virtuoso'.....Keep in mind, however that this is Nickel Creek BEFORE they were heavily influenced by everyone from Radiohead to the Beatles.......this is music for KIDS to enjoy, but it is neither modern/current, nor does it bear resemblance to the latest bluegrass/modern rock hybrid that we SOOOOOO love them for.

2 out of 5 stars Nickel Creek Origins..........2007-01-20

I purchased this CD shortly after finding out that Nickel Creek would be disolving their union as a band. I hoped that this collection would be suitable for both myself (as a strong supporter of Nickel Creek) and my two children. This CD honestly fails to deliver a suitable substitution for the music that Nickel Creek produced over the past 7 years. Although, I guess that was an unrealistic expectation to have for this CD. You have to keep in mind that the members of Nickel Creek were just children themselves when they released this CD. I don't believe that they had found their true musical identity, and they obviously wouldn't have reached their full musical potential yet. This CD isn't really the best for a todler either, so I have to say that this purchase was a let down overall.

Considering their ages when this disc was recorded....there is only one word to describe "AMAZING"

5 out of 5 stars Great cd for kids!.......2007-01-03

My 6 year old nephew loved this cd, but I have another 5 year old nephew that didn't like the "I want to be a cowboy's sweetheart" and gave his away!!!
The whole cd will not make mom go crazy listening to it over and over.
Well, maybe the 100th time will make her crazy, but the rest of the time she will sing along!
