Every Part Of Me

Every Part Of Me

Editorial Reviews

Product Description
R&B/Hip-Hop/Pop hybrid. Taking the best song writing and style elements from artists such as Jon B, TLC, Usher, and R. Kelly. A CD that has avoided the typical R&B pitfall of only having one good song and 12 others that are knock-offs of that one song or 12 songs that are "fillers" with no thought or staying power.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The greatest songs ever?.......2007-07-26

I heard 'clear or cloudy', from this recording, on the radio recently and had to purchase it. It is strange but it is the sort of song that makes life prior to listening to it different from life after. I find it sad that so many people haven't heard it. There are also many other wonderful works in this collection. Given you get twelve well recorded CDs with top quality performances, this has to be one of the bargains of the age.

Please buy it.

5 out of 5 stars A musical treasure-box.......2006-09-10

Both the music and this actual product are masterpieces. John Dowland's collected works here - covering 12 compact discs - exhibit the depth and power of this composer, a composer who many now regard as suffering from clinical depression. I doubt that the issue of the diagnosis of Dowland's depression can ever be settled, however, it is certainly obvious from his music, so completely on display here, that he was a man with very dark depths and corners in his mind. Dowland's various manifestations and "takes" on his own tune, "Flow my tears"/"Lachrimae" are here. This tune has haunted me ever since I first heard it when I was a child. It seems to sum up Dowland's feelings - at least Dowland seems to have thought so.

The First, Second, Third and Fourth Bookes of Songes, A Musicall Banquet, the keyboard transcriptions, all the lute music, consort music are here and virtually everything else written or supposedly written by John Dowland. Anthony Rooley and The Consort of Musicke perform this music with style and feeling throughout. This 12 CD set is something of a monument to the ensemble - I only wish they'd finished their collection of Monteverdi madrigals, which was equally good (La Venexiana are currently doing a magnificent job of recording all Monteverdi's books of madrigals for the GLOSSA label).

This is an expensive set, however, you will probably never need to buy another John Dowland CD again after buying and listening to this collection.

I bought this CD set on a mild Summer evening of 1998 and listened to it while sitting in my sun room - which a glorious orange sunset in progress, and a glass of wine. It brought back so many memories.

5 out of 5 stars a beautiful journey into melancholy.......2001-06-15

I'm amazed at how many people tend to associate John Dowland's music with a tragic sense of drama. While no doubt this is art highly based on sadness, the "tragic" sense of it is more a legacy from the Romantic period. During the Renaissance, however, sadness was undestood as a very aesthetic way of approaching life. That is also the reason why Shakespeare's tragedies appear more sophisticated than his comedies.

Dowland, a contemporary of Shakespeare, discovered that meditating on a sad theme is, at the same time, a way of discovering a special beauty that we tend to avoid (maybe because of the "tragic" heritage of the Romantics). So, in the end, meditating on sadness is an uplifting experience! This box set is a journey into melancholy that includes songs, chamber music, pieces for lute, some rare sacred music and -as a highlight- Dowland's beautiful collection of seven pieces for viola which he called "Lachrimae" (Tears).

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-15

Perfection in delivery and hauntingly beautiful tone quality mark this performance of some glorious holy week music. The Choir of King's College is made up of approximately 30 members, 16 are the young boy choristers and 14 are the undergraduates, who are referred to as Scholars. This particular disc shows 2 different recording times:The Tallis selections comprising the first half of the record were recorded in 1981; the second half (of varied composers )was recorded in 1977. So we cannot be sure that all the personnel were the same, not that it really matters, because it is all so very excellent. HOwever, I think that the Tallis half sounds like only the Scholars were singing, because there are no boy sopranos, as in the 2nd half. Be that as it may, I'll comment on just a few of the works that I particularly enjoyed.
ALL OF THE TALLIS: "The Lamentations of Jeremiah" are usually transmitted as a single piece in most contemporary manuscripts, but they are really two separate compositions in different modes. Tallis and his contemporary John Sheppard were the only 2 English composers of the time to compose hymn settings of any quality. It has been suggested that they had it in mind to compose a cycle of settings for Mary Tudor's chapel. "O Nata lux" may belong to this Marian set. It is almost entirely homophonic, and relies rhetorically upon a flexible declamatory style. " Salvator Mundi" is one of Tallis's best-known motets. The masterly treatment of imitative writing is combined with a fine sense of structure and balance, achieved through repetition, to give a sense of large-scale design, a feature characteristic of Tallis's best large-scale compositions. And the most beautiful anthem on the disc: Tallis's "If Ye Love Me".
So much wonderful music, exquisitely sung; a delcious Easter treat!
I would like to mention to any Michael Chance fans who read this, he is definitely singing on this recording. In the first half it is very obvious, but I do think he is also on the 2nd half. He would have been with King's at this time. Just some trivia for those who are interested.

4 out of 5 stars What you would expect from Kings.......2005-03-23

This is a good recording--you wouldn't expect anything else from this choir. They just sing really well. Diction, tone, everything. Just great performance.

I disagree, as I usually do with Kings, with some of the repertoire selected. The Tallis Lamentations at the beginnning are sung well, but, quite honestly, I usually skip them because they're boring and I want to listen to a variety of pieces on the recording. The Lotti and Sheppard are also disastrous, not because of the performance, just because, in my opinion, they are disastrous as music anyway.

The hymns are probably the best music on this recording. They exemplify the true passion of the season. The other motets (besides the Lamentations) by Tallis are excellent. Leighton's "Let all the world", while I hate singing it, is an effective way to close the recording.

Overall, a good addition to your music library, but not a necessary one.

4 out of 5 stars Lovely til the end........2004-03-13

The music on this cd brings home the beauty of the loftiest, most beautiful cathedrals of Europe, and is fitting of the subject matter therein: the death and resurection of Christ. The only thing I have to complain about is the last selection. TERRIBLE! Forgive me, but I tried to listen to it with open mind and open heart... but everytime, the word terrible came to mind. I would try to keep my twitching fingers away from the skip buttom; but again, every time, I found my arm going straight for it. The last selection sounds like a horrible, tragicly corny and rediculous church-circus joke. The rest of the cd is gorgious. I'm just not into that new-age sound-- or whatever it's supposed to be. Did I mention that the last selection on this cd is repulsive? If I didn't, well, let me say that it stinks!!! Buy the cd anyway, and do like I do and skip the last selection... unless of course you have found a way to tollerate it.

5 out of 5 stars Vintage King's!.......2001-10-30

Superb ensemble singing from simply one of the finest choirs in the world. Philip Ledger's tenure at king's was relatively short but he produced a sublime sound from the choir. Then are many jewels on this disc from Lotti's 'Crucifixus' to the simply beautiful interpretation of Orlando Gibbon's 'Drop, drop slow tears'
Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars King's College Choir Proves Its Mastery Again.......2001-03-20

I have been extremely hungry to hear English Tudor composers lately and came across this CD. Since it contained works by Tallis, Morley, Gibbons, Taverner and Sheppard, was sung by my favorite choir, and was very reasonably priced, I figured I had nothing to lose. Everything else on the disc was frosting on the cake.

I am especially delighted with the attention to program on this CD. From following Tallis's lavishly dense "Lamentations" with his thrillingly sparse "O Nata Lux" (full of tasty cross relations), to following Taverner's "Dum transisset Sabbatum I" with the well known Easter hymn, "Jesus Christ is risen today," careful attention is given to pacing and contrast over the generous 73 min 18 sec of the recording.

If I were to select two items worthy of special note, I'd point you to Lotti's "Crucifixus" and Kenneth Leighton's "Let all the world in every corner sing." The first is certainly the most exquisite use of dissonance I've ever heard in a Baroque choral work. Burney records in his 1770 diaries that the Italian choir brought him to tears when it nailed the entries on dissonant suspensions, and this recording shows you exactly what he was talking about. In the context of this program, Leighton's anthem is also a thrilling piece of work. Though decidedly modern, it uses modern organ and choral writing to the service of the text. Never do I pull back and think, "Is this weirdness for weirdness' sake?" -- as I do when listening to the works of many moderns, and Gesualdo, for that matter. It is a thrilling ride on the crest of a wave of sound that brings the entire program of King's College Choir's "Music for Holy Week" to an exhilarating conclusion. (I don't know any other work by him. Surely this isn't unique in his catalog.)

Even if you have no idea what smooth jazz is, "Every Part of Me" offers the type of music that makes you supremely glad you listened. Buy this CD for anyone who appreciates beautiful, instrumental songs with an enticing piano flavor. Make no mistake, this is not elevator music. Every track is a vibrant work of emotion and masterful sound. Simply oustanding on every level.

5 out of 5 stars Smoothjazz.com Review.......2005-09-16

One of the things I really like about keyboardist William Woods' work is the musical integrity and class he brings to his albums. Take his third release, EVERY PART OF ME as a case in point. All eleven superb tracks are quality originals, he's assembled an all-star group of sidemen for the session (guitarist Denny Jiosa, bassist Chris Kent, percussionist Glen Caruba, and drummer Raymond Massey), and retained one of my favorite producers, Michael Moryc, to work hand-in-hand with Denny Jiosa...and the results speak for themselves. This disc is an outstanding, world-class excursion into contemporary jazz, offering memorable melodies delivered with understated, introspective elegance. The tracks I personally keep coming back to are the first Smooth Jazz radio single, "Alive, Living in Jersey" and the catchy "Whadja Expect?" I also really like the very lyrical title track (definitely the album's standout ballad) and the intriguing "Out of the Woodwork." There's really no need to cherry-pick the tunes on this album, though, as every one of them is a solid, first-rate performance. I definitely have to mention what I think is unique about William Woods...his dual careers, as a jazz pianist and radiation oncologist. Tying this all together is the fact that 50% of the proceeds from the sales of EVERY PART OF ME go to the American Cancer Society. You buy the CD, enjoy superb Smooth Jazz, and you help fight cancer. Now there's a win-win situation if ever there was one! ~Scott O'Brien

This single is good. And this girl can SANG..not sing but SANG...Its ashame her label didnt promote her the way the should've.With a talent like this and these songs are great she should've went further than this.I only heard of this song because i caught it on BET one day.I neve rheard it on the radio or after that first time. What amkes me sad about it when i bough tthis single it wa son sale at the music store for 49 cents!!!!When i went to pay for it, it rung up as only 1 cent.I PAYED A PENNY FOR HER CD!!!It shoulda costed more than that. The lead song on here is great it has that poppy. soulful feel to it.IT shoulda been radio friendly. The other two are classic and great ."Every Part Of Me" she sang very well and it should be a single. "All By Myself" is a song she sang on Americal Idol and of course we all know that one.People go buy it ,this is a good single and i havent even heard the album yet.Trust me i am going to buy it and youll see my review in a bit....

Latoya's voice is so wonderful, I hope the full CD, Love & Life is better. I was not aware there were only 3 songs on this CD. I think she should have been the "Idol" but America didn't see it that way. She is so good on love songs and ballads, this is her true gift. She has the ability to let us dream, when she sings the good stuff. I wish her all the luck in the world. She is lovely and so gifted.

4 out of 5 stars The Real American Idol.......2005-10-27

I have been anxiously awaiting Latoya London's debut album and I have not been disappointed. On American Idol, she demonstrated a range of styles and vocal abilities that was by far the best of the bunch. However, American Idol is a popularity contest so...

If you are looking for good R&B music then you've found it! Latoya does not disappoint. "How I love the Rain" is my favorite.

I love the album!

4 out of 5 stars A fine taste of what's to come from this woman........2005-10-04

All I can say is that this CD is awesome. I adore the lyrical content on this song and it's nothing but a breath of fresh air for female R&B. Just in time when a lot of female-driven songs were about nothing but "he done me wrong" and "I kicked him to the curb". This tune shows that women like her has nothin' but respect for the male species and knows that good men are in existence. Aside from the lyrical content, the music is on point and will either make you dance or nod your head. Give it a listen.

5 out of 5 stars LaToya London.......2005-09-12

This CD is fantastic! No matter how many times I reply "All By Myself" I still get goosebumps! Am anxiously awaiting the full album release on September 20. We can't get enough of LaToya!

Album Description

R&B/Hip-Hop/Pop hybrid. Taking the best song writing and style elements from artists such as Jon B, TLC, Usher, and R. Kelly. A CD that has avoided the typical R&B pitfall of only having one good song and 12 others that are knock-offs of that one song or 12 songs that are "fillers" with no thought or staying power.

Once I put the CD in I couldn't stop listening. It is one of those CDs that you put in and let go. Girls I've had listen to it love it. I play is when ever there's a girl in the car and absolutely play it when she's at the crib. There isn't a song I don't like. "Dreamin Of" and "Show Me The Way" are my favorites; but "Dumb Ones" and "Won't Tell" are both pretty catchy. Its got that Pop feel with an R&B groove to get your body movin. This album has taken my game to the next level. See how it improves yours; and ladies if your man doesn't get it then treat yourself to JOAQUIN's seductive ways with "Every Part of Me", "Alternative", and "Meet Me At The Bay."

Carlonie Cobb's voice is absolutely awesome, but she comes across as still being a real person. Her lyrics remind me of those by Jill Phillips-- real words of love for Jesus and a real connection to the truth of humanity. The song about Hosea is one of the best songs I have heard in years. If I can ever find another Caroline Cobb CD, I will buy that son of a gun in a heartbeat.
