5 out of 5 stars Great Sampling Collection.......2007-07-29

Over the past thirty years, my father and I have been collecting film music on various formats--vinyl, tape, reel-to-reel, CD, recording it from the movie, even. This collection is a great starter for someone who wants to start owning movie music. Lots of big hitters, including Hermann, Barry, Conti, Mancini, and Goldsmith as well as some contemporary scores that are great, too. This is the type of collection I would make for a friend who asks "what scores should I start with?"

4 out of 5 stars Six Decades of Film Music.......2007-05-13

This is film music for the classical music lover. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra presents excellent arrangements of a number of classic film themes (although several pieces of the 56 film classics selected for this 4 CD set are not orchestral arrangements, but rather specialty arrangements). Besides great film composers such as John Williams, Elmer Bernstein, Ennio Morricone, and James Horner, classical composers such as Richard Strauss and Pietro Mascagni make an appearance. On several of the numbers the Crouch End Festival Chorus adds the human voice to the power of the full symphonic orchestra to create true movie magic. If you like the sound of a full symphony orchestra playing some of the most recognized themes ever written, you'll love these CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent collection with fine performances.......2007-03-28

Silva Screen Records, based in England, has been issuing some fine collections of film scores, more in one box than we have the right to expect. This four-CD box contains scores by many of the best writers, including Max Steiner, Bernard Herrmann, Dimitri Tomkin, Kenneth J. Alford (The Bridge on the River Kwai), Elmer Bernstein, Maurice Jarre, Ennio Marricone, John Barry, Nino Rota, John Williams, James Horner, and more. We can all think of additional film scores we wished were included, but then there's no way this collection could be all-inclusive. The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra, supplemented by Crouch End Festival Chorus on some numbers, does a very competent job...The liner notes give the basic information without any commentary, and as far as I can see, contain only one error. Am I wrong or are tracks 9 and 10 on the fourth CD mislabeled? Track 9, which runs 7:33, seems to have the excitement of "Pirates of the Caribbean" (which I did not see) and track 10, which runs 4:22, the more sedate "The Girl with the Pearl Earring (which I also did not see). Listings seem to have them reversed.

5 out of 5 stars "essential film scores from 1939 to 2004 ~ Incredible Music".......2005-05-16

When I think of the "Golden Age" of Hollywood, many composers come to mind...you gave the usher your ticket in the theater and sat down, knowingly you were going to get your moneys worth...when the curtain opened and you heard those first few notes...you sat back, watched and listened as the film score and orchestra worked their magic...now we have the ultimate from Silva Screen Classics "The Incredible Film Music Box", featuring a four disc set of the essential film scores of the past 60 years...covering several decades from 1939 through and up to the present 2004

There are compilations and then there are "Compilations" beginning with a classic that even the youngsters today recognize "GONE WITH THE WIND" (1939) (Max Steiner), sweeping score that captures the tragic history of the South during the Civil War, one great cue after another, it doesn't get any better than this, nominated by the Academy for Best Original Score...and closing on Disc 4 with "THE INCREDIBLES" (2004) (Michael Giacchino), the big hit in computer animation from Walt Disney & Pixar that once again pit Super-Heroes against the forces of evil...our family of five Supers prove crime doesn't pay, but box-office receipts do...gotta love it!

Silva Screen Classics as usual, has put quality into this 4-CD-Set featuring The City Of Prague Philarmonic Orchestra and the Crouch End Festival Chorus conducted by Kenneth Alwyn, Bill Ashton, Paul Bateman, James Fitzpatrick, Mario Klemens, Derek Wadsworth, and Nic Raine. Recorded in "Dolby Surround" with the new technology of "HDCD", this is a "film-score-buffs" dream, one to treasure now and years to come.

Some selections are missing, but when you think of what Silva has included, it is impossible to please everyone...was happy to see "TOUCH OF EVIL" (1958) from composer Henry Mancini, as I feel this composer deserves all the recognition that has been overlooked recently in the music world...This collection is aimed directly at the "Serious Film Score" music fans and collectors...Silva is as always, perfect in every way...just the way we like 'em!

Given the two belated live-action sequels and numerous other TV and video spinoffs spawned by Disney's charming 1961 animated original, the Dalmatian count is more like 1,001 by now. This reissued soundtrack (admirably restored in the late '90s by producer Randy Thornton) showcases the original orchestral film cues of George Bruns to good effect. While the composer's bright, lively work was largely fragmentary (originally written as punctuation for the film's turns of action and comedy), its components have been skillfully sequenced and gently edited here for a more cohesive listening experience. The film's most memorable musical moments remain Mel Levin's delightful trio of songs, "Kanine Krunchies," "Dalmatian Plantation," and, of course, the classic villainess romp "Cruella DeVil." Bonus cuts include both a bluesy piano rendition and Levin's decidedly goofy piano/vocal demo of the latter tune. A great primer to Disney's animation underscore philosophy, seasoned with one of the studio's most memorable songs. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars Best of Shearing AND Kings Singers.......2002-05-26

This is a fantastic recording. There are interesting arrangements from some of the best popular music arrangers, including Richard Rodney Bennett, Paul Hart and Daryl Runswick, not to mention Shearing's great new 5/4 version of his best-loved song Lullaby of Birdland, which begins with a jazz version of Brahms' Lullaby.

The Kings Singers are in fine form, with their flawless intonation and meticulous attention to creating a great sound.

Each track features just the sextet, Shearing and a double bass (played by Neil Swainson), except for One For My Baby, which adds John Harle on saxophone. That track is one of the three terrific Daryl Runswick arrangements included on the album.

Other stand-outs are:

The-Half-of-It-Dearie Blues, which sounds very similar to their much earlier version of it, i.e. sensitive and sensuous.
Gershwin's The Real American Folk Song (is a rag)
Daryl Runswick's interpretations of I Got Rhythm and Anyplace I Hang My Hat
Over the Rainbow

It is worth getting Amazon to hunt for this album for you: it is one of the very best of many fine albums the performers have made. Getting them together for this disc was a first-class idea.

Album Description

Released by ROIR as cassette-only in 1987 under the title “Mekons New York”, this completely remastered CD, with 2 bonus tracks, is a musical sound document of the Mekons 1986 - 1987 road tour of the USA. This recording includes mostly live club date songs, ad libs, vaudeville sound-bytes and back of the van ribaldry and banter. “New York” drew amazing plaudits from the press and fans.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars High energy and Low fidelity.......2006-10-07

I dislike this album for the same reason you might love it. Its sloppy drunk and lo-fi. It is indeed the wrong place to acquaint yourself with the Mekons. Not for the uninitiated.

The 20 bit remastering assures you that you're hearing all the limitations of the original recordings. You know, if you place a turd in a crystal vase, it's still a turd.
Most of the tracks sound like they were made on a cassette recorder placed on a table in the middle of the room.

I don't doubt this album is loved by some Mekon fans. It has a raw immediacy that is so intimate that you can feel the hangovers. One quality that I love about the Mekons is that they have fun and there is plenty of evidence of that on this disc.

If the "up all night drunken Britt" aspect of the Mekons appeals to you, this is for you. If you're like me and prefer the later studio offerings such as Curse of the Mekons and Journey to the End of Night, it might not be.

5 out of 5 stars The tape is worn, the cd is new, I'm just not human anymore.......2001-01-31

I was jumping like a frog when I saw that the Mekons had released New York on CD. The tape is absolutely precious to me for the simple reason that so few Mekons albums allow you to see the band at it's *personal* best. This is live, grungy, dirty, distressed, far-from-the-studio stuff and beyond that it is honest as hell. Hear the audience, hear Jon's sarcasm, but most of all hear the absolute beauty that is the Mekons.

This album probably won't be good introduction to the Mekons for your straight-laced geek friends, but if you know what to expect then by all means grab it. The Mekons have truly brought us to heaven and back. Screw it if I'm not a critic.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars English is an asset and a drawback.......2004-07-20

The best thing about this recording of Carmen is the libretto. Conductor David Parry penned this facile and dramatic English translation. He avoids the pitfalls of literal translation to achieve an idiomatic flow that matches the rhythm of the original lyrics. I use this as a reference libretto for any of the French Carmens.

Unfortunately, the performance suffers from being sung in English. The singers declaim their parts with such proper British diction that Carmen comes across as a school marm. The spoken dialog is delivered beat for deliberate beat and is dripping with reverb. It makes the plaza, tavern and mountain pass all sound like a sewer pipe.

This is a good first Carmen for someone trying to understand the work. The libretto itself is a good investment for further listening. For an enjoyable performance with an emphasis on character and action, I recommend Regina Resnik on the London Double Decker set.

5 out of 5 stars You Will Love Opera After Hearing Carmen In English.......2004-02-09

What a perfect introduction to opera. This newly released recording will surely get you hooked into opera. Carmen, a French opera by Georges Bizet, is the most recognizable and most popular in the opera world. It's famous melodies- the overture, the Habanera, The Toreador Song have all been featured in everything from cellular phone ring tones to Superbowl Commercial (last year's Superbowl with The "Opera In English" label has been making Italian operas into English for a number of years now. Also on the market are Verdi's La Traviata in English (with soprano Valerie Masterson as Violetta) Handel's Julius Caesar with Janet Baker and even Wagner's epic Ring Of The Nibeling sung in English. This is a terrific recording and I highly recommend it if you want to get into opera. Listen to this version first and then try the real, original French version Bizet had written. Patricia Bardon is sensational, sexy and dramatic as Carmen.

The real strength of this version is the dynamic drama. With the advantage of being sung in English, we get better insight on characters' emotions and motives, and we understand the drama a lot better. Carmen is all about great drama. Bizet drew the plot from the French writer Prosper Merimee's dark short story. Carmen is the ultimate femme fatale- a devil-may-care, sexy Gypsy living in Spain, seduces the conservatively raised soldier Don Jose, stealing him away from his fiancee, the passive Micaela, living a life of underground smuggling and rowdy taverns. "Habanera" and "The Gypsy Song and Dance" are very expressive of Carmen's extraordinarily liberal lifestyle. Don Jose, however, has fallen deeply in love- as he shows us in his song/aria "The Flower Song". But Carmen soon becomes tired of his constancy. Don Jose wants a committed, monogamous relationship with Carmen. But Carmen will not submit to love, since she is first and foremost a carnal creature. Eventually, she falls for the handsome Toreador Escamillo. Don Jose, consumed by jealousy, stabs Carmen at a bullfight after Carmen declares her love for Escamillo and rejects Don Jose's love. Don Jose's crazed, obscessive personality shines through in the English version as well. This tragedy has been done in English before so don't think this is the first time. Back in the 50's, there was a film, starring black actors "Carmen Jones" which was treated the same way as this opera- more like an English Broadway musical and with the dubbed singing voice of Marilyn Horne as Carmen. All in all, this recording is excellent.

5 out of 5 stars A wholly credible "Carmen" -- finally!.......2003-09-17

This recording really sells "Carmen" as a drama. Although I have two other recordings of this opera and have seen it performed several times, it never quite worked for me dramatically. But thanks to the fine performances, conducting, and translation here, I've become a "Carmen" convert. Producing a good English-language performance of a foreign opera, especially a warhorse like "Carmen," is much more difficult than it might appear. You need performers who not only can sing the parts (of course) but also can sing *English* and make it halfway intelligible and make it sound like English and make it dramatically convincing to English-speakers. The singers on this recording do an excellent job all around. Don't be put off if you don't recognize their names -- they are up to the task musically and (especially) in their acting. Admittedly, as with *all* English-language recordings, some passages are very hard to understand without reading along, but most of the time the words are clear and effective. I would recommend this recording to any opera beginner or opera lover, even those who normally turn up their noses at performances in translation.

4 out of 5 stars I love Carmen!.......2003-08-15

I do. I can think of no other opera with more melodic inventiveness, and few others with so sure a dramatic pulse. Carmen is popular and it thrills me to say that it is also a very good opera - not always true of popular things.

And what of this recording? Carmen sits well in English, so it is good to hear in translation, although some of the detais in the text jar. Escamillo refers to Jose as "my dear", which sounds rather peculiar, and the guide's line to Micaela: "it's not exactly inviting, is it?" sounds distinctly Middle England rather than Rural Spain. Some of the performers, not least Carmen herself, make the words work, although there are long tracts, especially with the chorus, where the language is distinctly indistinct.

The soloists are, by and large, strong. Patricia Bardon's deep, Handel-friendly voice adapts well to Carmen and she colours the music with phenomenal detail, sounding sexy and provocative from the start with an edge of pride and anger that emerges as the show goes on. She is out of her depth above the stave, though, and some extra top notes in the second act don't show her off to her best advantage. I have previously said that Julian Gavin is poorly served by recordings, though here he sounds much more even and gives a thrilling and musical performance (but his wooden spoken lines let him down). Mary Plazas is a lovely Micaela, rich-voiced and sincere (and word-perfect), but Garry Magee sounds miscast as Escamillo, lacking the ballast at the bottom of the voice to do justice to this tricky role.

The supporting cast is good (Mary Hegarty seems to do nothing but Frasquita these days!) but the really treasurable thing is the conducting. Stepping out of Italian Ottocento, David Parry turns his hand to this French Comedie with an appropriate lightness of touch. His pacing and handling of the set pieces is exemplary and the enrtractes go with a real swing.

A pleasure, then, for the Carmen naive or a novelty for the Carmen-acquainted. I nearly wrote Carmen-weary - but I don't think it's possible.

INSTRUMENTAL!! Don't expect vocals. Other than that, it is a nice collection.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable by itself.......2000-03-30

The music is beautiful just for listening. The first CD could be used in a wedding. The 2nd CD contains instrumental versions of the songs which is soothing and peaceful; it could also be used in a wedding, but not for a reception. I did not buy this to use in a wedding - just for the music and I was not disappointed. It's a nice background for meditation, or remembering your own wedding. I just bought a second one for some friends who are getting married. And the price is right.

2 out of 5 stars Classical CD is great, but the other one is horrible........1999-11-17

The first CD is filled with popular classic wedding songs and is really good, but the last CD is music that would make your guests think they were trapped in an elevator filled with easy listening music. I cannot understand why someone would compile those songs for a wedding!

4 out of 5 stars Bachman rocks!.......2006-01-10

Randy Bachman delivers a sound similar to BTO with a few more diverse songs, and the lyrics are a bit more personal, more introspective. The musicianship on this CD is first-rate, from the lead guitar to the backing vocals. Neil Young makes an appearance on "Prairie Town", and you even get two versions of this song - one rocks while the other is mellow. "Tailspin" will actually remind you of ZZ Top, and who among us can't relate to being "Overworked and Underpaid"? All in all, a very solid and worthwhile CD.

5 out of 5 stars One of Canada's finest..........2005-02-08

Randy Bachman, prairie legend, writer and co-writer of some of the finest music Canada has put on the map now for four-plus decades, came out with this excellent CD in the early 90s, years after leaving Bachman-Turner Overdrive and before the REAL Guess Who would reunite. This album is full of great surprises, including one tune written by his son and future star Tal Bachman (who's just released his second album, by the way). This stuff is easily up there with BTO's best including the single Prairie Town, done as a straight-out rocker with a guest appearance from Neil Young, and as a ballad with Cowboy Junkies singer Margo Timmins. The rest of it is meat-and-potatoes rock & rool like "Underworked and Overpaid", the title track, and many other tracks. Enjoyable from start to finish. While Randy may not have a voice like his partners Messrs. Cummings or Turner, it suits the material just fine. Bachman has the chops and the ability to turn out stuff that just feels right the first time you hear it...one listen to this CD and you'll know why he's been around as long as he has. This is convertible-top-down, pedal-to-the-metal, takin'-care-of-business (sorry, couldn't resist) Canadian rock and roll the way it should be from one of its true masters. Don't pass this one by!

4 out of 5 stars Any road you want..........2001-07-26

I have only just relistened to the the "Any Road Up" portion of this disc and it brought back a lot of great memories for me. I saw SGB with the WHO in a little gymnasium in Sindlefingen, Germany back in 76. The show was amazing!!! Gibbons rocked and his version of Watching the River Flow was stupendous. At the time that their album "Down In The Bunker" was released he was being touted as a "British Bob Seger" which I feel did him a real disservice. Seger had started the sharp decline into AOR mediocrity which he has since continued but Gibbons was still vital, rockin and relevant. The Real Shame was that he was never accepted stateside because at the time he was needed on american radio. Just a note he has an album/cd available thru import of dylan covers which are great. YOU MUST BUY THIS CD IF YOU VALUE GOOD,SMART, HONEST, ROCK N ROLL!!!

5 out of 5 stars Steve Gibbons.......2000-12-03

I agree with Ralph; "Down in the Bunker" should be re-released. The music is real 'Rock and Roll'. Steve Gibbons reminds me of Chuck Berry and Jerry Lee Lewis. His music has an undercurrent of humor. He does not take himself; or his music too seriously. UNDER-Appreciated is the term that springs to mind. I saw the Kingsmen in 1965. They offered the same type of irreverance as the Steve Gibbons Band. "Louie, Louie" and "Down in the Bunker" are like cousins; they evoke smiles, double entendres and just plain Feel Good ! I'm buying this CD ! And, I want more.

4 out of 5 stars Double Dose Dynamite.......2000-06-29

Like so many British rockers of the mid-seventies, Gibbons grew up influenced by fifties r&r and British skiffle. His long, hard work gigging up & down pubs adding hue to his rock. This double CD courtesy Road Goes On Forever teams up two great Gibbons albums on a double CD set that's surprisingly affordable and still enjoyable after all these years (both albums had seen limited North American release on MCA at the time). Like Dire Straits, the guitars tend to be bendable and fluid, the vocals a little grimy and unpolished, the production edgy and bright. But these are all pluses, especially on cuts like "Spark Of Love", "Rollin'", "Now You Know Me" and "Till The Fire Burns Out". Both CDs also boast bonus tracks (five in all) that sound like they fit right in. Like Sniff N'The Tears and Ducks Deluxe, Steve Gibbons serves up great British-flavored rock that's winning and heartening to hear. Fans won't be disappointed. Now, is there any chance somebody will reissue DOWN IN THE BUNKER, Steve's superb 1978 album?

5 out of 5 stars A Must buy for the video alone.......2004-03-23

Was tipped off about this CD-Single by Chris Carter, host of the L.A. radio show Breakfast with the Beatles and it has fast become my favorite piece of Beatle media from the past couple of years. Music tracks are straight off of the Brainwashed CD (another must buy),but it is the Video for Any Road that is the necessity here. The best Beatle (not just solo) video ever done. I have shown it to everyone I know and will continue to do so in years to come. THIS ONE IS A MUST FOR ANYONE WHO MISSES GEORGE.

5 out of 5 stars Thank You George.......2003-12-31

Being an import single I was having a hard time finding this CD in my local stores. I bought a second one through Amazon for a Christmas Present for a dear friend.

I don't know if George had a hand in making the Any Road video, but it is an amazing video.

I would like to see the video of "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea" come out, which was shown partially on the Brainwashed DVD

    4 out of 5 stars Good stuff.......2003-12-27

After George Harrison reissued his classic album All Things Must Pass, rumors spread that he was recording a new album. Unfortunately, he died of brain cancer on November 29, 2001, and these rumors were forgotten. But, in 2002, these rumors were turned into solid fact - the new album, Brainwashed, was finally released. Harrison's Traveling Wilburys bandmate and former Electric Light Orchestra frontman Jeff Lynne helped to complete the album following his death. And one of the singles to be released from the album was Any Road. Read on for my review of this single.

The single A-Side, Any Road is an upbeat number which was the opening track on the Brainwashed album. It's one of the few songs from the album where Harrison's voice doesn't sound horribly distorted from his diminishing condition. The B-Side, Marwa Blues, is an excellent instrumental. I'm surprised George didn't do more instrumentals, because he's one of the greatest guitarists of all time. The single also features some bonus material you can view if you put the CD in your computer.

These are two excellent songs and the bonus enhanced CD footage is nice, however if you're like me and you only buy CDs for the music, this is unnecessary; all of the MUSIC on here is available on the Brainwashed album. I suggest shelling out the extra cash for the album. Also, since this is an import single (NOT sold in America), it just isn't worth hunting down unless you're a George Harrison completist. That's not to say this is bad stuff, though - it's excellent.

    5 out of 5 stars A Great Song on a Great Album.......2003-10-09

I am pleased that this record was released as a single. In a proper radio market it is definitely a top 40 hit. But today there seems to be no rhyme or reason to what is a hit. This song sits alongside any of his best. It will not disappoint. Arguably his best opener on any of his albums.

5 out of 5 stars Great Album for George Fans!!!.......2003-06-08

This is a great album The only thing wrong was it wasn't longer but hey it's a single. The Enhanced version is wonderful to. It shows a previous history of Harrisons career as a Beatle with flashes of Yellow Submarine and Him in his Solo career doing interviews with Any Road music playing in the back-ground. A+++!
