No one will lament the passing of the boy band phenomenon; now the American Idol runner-up Clay Aiken has released his first album. He's picked up right where 'N Sync and the Backstreet Boys left off, not only borrowing Andreas Carlsson, the Swedish songsmith who penned some of their biggest hits (also using the services of other well-known popmeisters like Desmond Child and Cathy Dennis), but turning out the same type of impeccable over-produced and seamless creations that the Orlando pop mafia rode up the charts at the dawn of the millennium. Several years into the new millennium it seems like there's still quite a bit of life left in that zeitgeist, since Aiken's Measure of a Man debuted at number one on the Billboard charts. Well crafted and well sung, but at times lacking discernable personality or endearing idiosyncrasies, many of Aiken's tunes sound the same, whether he's lamenting the lack of love in his life ("Invisible"), reveling in it ("Perfect Day"), or supporting his fellow man ("I Will Carry You"). As a made-for-TV pop star, it'll be interesting to see how Measure of a Man measures up in the years to come. --Jaan Uhelszki

1 out of 5 stars I'm not one to usually complain, but this CD sucks!.......2007-06-21

Why did I buy it, you might ask? Because Clay has a wonderful voice, that's why! I heard Bridge Over Troubled Water and was blown away. I had to have this CD. But it's garbage. I thought Jewel's Pieces Of You CD was bad. At least she had a couple of songs that saved it from being a pointless, mindless waste of time. This CD has one and I mean ONE song that is tolerable and that's Measure Of A Man. But to be honest, I didn't sit through one song here because I couldn't. The lyrics that they had written for Clay were OK but none of it seemed believable when he sang to me. Nothing. OK, maybe Invisible was but I still didn't like that song either. I have no problem with adult contemporary (if that's what you call this) because Mariah used to do wonders with it. However, Clay didn't pull it off at all. And this CD barely does anything to showcase his voice. All there seemed to be was mindless, pointless dribble coming from the stereo for the twenty minutes I spent skipping through this CD. It is completely unlistenable!

You can buy it, but don't say I didn't warn you!

5 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC!!!.......2007-05-11

I love this cd. Clay Aiken is wonderfully talented and has an awesome voice. I highly recommend this-all the songs are great!!!

5 out of 5 stars This artist has been horribly mis-managed........2007-04-08

Clay Aiken is truly a gifted singer and entertainer. He has such a fantastic voice and mesmerizing stage presence. The only reason I can see as to why he isn't more popular or releasing new material has to be because of poor management. He needs to clean house- fire all his "people" and start over from scratch. He deserves better- and so do his legions of loyal fans.

Having now gotten off my soapbox, I can now offer up my opinion on this album. I must say that this is a great debut album. Clays vocals are showcased very well and several of the songs really touched me deeply. Having had a similar "non-relationship" with my biological father, I can only imagine the pain and regret he feels when singing 'Solitaire' and 'Measure of a Man'.
I highly recommend this to anyone- whether you're an Aiken fan or not. But having listened to his great voice, I don't know how you could walk away and not appreciate this man's talent.

5 out of 5 stars CLAY IS A-OK!.......2007-02-05

I LIKE TO LISTEN TO SONG SAMPLES BEFORE I ORDER ANY CD FROM AN ARTIST I'M NOT FAMILIAR WITH. LIKED CLAY AIKEN'S VOICE. THIS IS A GREAT CD. I HAVE TWO CD'S OF CLAY, AND LIKE THEM BOTH.

4 out of 5 stars I Must Commend Clay For Not Going Hip/Hop.......2007-01-16

This guy is much wiser than the other American Idol folks. He knows his voice, obviously likes a good lyric and melody and didn't want to waste time putting a lot of "fillers" on his album.

Obviously, the record companies convinced both Fantasia Barrino and Ruben Studdard that they MUST be hip/hop in order to sell records (forget the fact that they can REALLY sing!) Their albums sound just like the rest of that boring hip/hop junk. What a shame!

Hip/hop wasn't what got them the title of "American Idol". I remember one contestant who came out and did a hip/hop number and was promptly voted off the next week. AI always chooses strong songs that make sense, not the moronic hip/hop stuff. Hooray to Clay for knowing his voice and keeping his taste in tact.

5 out of 5 stars Instruments of the Orchestra - Great Reference Material!.......2007-04-04

This set lends itself to greatly enhancing one's knowledge of the orchestra, instruments in it, and their usage. I am a huge music buff, and I still picked up a great deal I previously did not know. I highly recommend this for all who wish to understand the origin of music, as well as the processes that are employed to create music!

5 out of 5 stars Beginner or Expert.......2007-03-12

This CD is excellent for the beginner or expert! To be able to haear the instrumets separately and then together really provides a good education. and/or refresher. The book thaty comes with the CD is alomost worth the price by itself!

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Enjoyable.......2006-11-20

Whether you're a music novice or pro, "The instruments of the Orchestra" is a very worthwhile purchase. The 7 CDs, with a total of 8 hours, are expertly narrated by Jeremy Siepmann. He's a great speaker, very much like the late Leonard Bernstein was. Mr. Siepmann takes you on an unforgetable musical journey covering the origins and use of the various orchestral instruments throughout musical history. The balance between his narration and a wealth of musical examples, which range from snippets to entire movements, is superb. The comprehensive enclosed booklet is excellent and faithfully follows the 7 CDs in content. Even with my 40+ years of music training I still learned new things from this wonderful collection. Considering the excellence of the content, and a cost that translates to about $5 per disc, this collection is a great value. Grab it, you won't regret that you did. Five solid stars!

3 out of 5 stars Frank's view.......2006-08-19

This boxed set of CD's with booklet achieved all I had hoped that it would. There are good samples of individual instruments and well done commentary on each. The only drawback was that some of the samples were too brief and could have been longer, hoiwever I guess this fits in with time constraints of the medium. It has given me a lot of clues as to future purchases of CD's for listening to individual instruments. Altogeth a satisfactory purchase and a welcome addition to my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Intro for Those Not Familiar with the Orchestra.......2003-11-08

I've listened to classical music for years and am interested in composition. I bought this CD set to learn how an orchestra and its instruments work. I thought the CDs would be a nice but boring lecture. They aren't! Not only are they FUN but they are informative as well. I learned a huge amount from each CD and couldn't wait to listen to the next one.

The narrator and writer is a great speaker and holds your attention well. He is definitely knowledgeable. He provides musical examples for each point he makes, so you get to "hear" what he just talked about. I'd say the CDs are about 65% music and 35% narration. You'll learn about the range of instruments, some history, different ways to play them, how they sound, and how they are used in the orchestra. This CD set was a great learning experience and is sold at such a low price!

I recommend this CD for those who want to learn about classical music and those who know about it but are interested in learning more about the inner workings of an orchestra. You'll learn much useful information. For instance, the Rite of Spring (with that eerie start) is written for bassoon! I never knew a bassoon could sound like that but now I do.

The one complaint I have is the last CD. This deals with the orchestra. I wanted more of a tour of how the orchestra has been used through history up to the present. Instead, it was a tour of how different groups of instruments sound. I thought it could have been better. The other 6 CDs are excellent.

I'm not a big country music fan but once in a while I like it and this CD is good. I bought it for the song "Love At The End Of The Road." Other than that, I'm not really qualified to evaluate a country music CD.

This is the best CD you'll ever buy. There is a song on here titled "Nobody Knows." It was remade by someone else. I want this song extremely bad but can't seem to find it anywhere or find who the artist is. Any help would be greatly excepted. thanks Rebecca

I'm sure you must have found out by now that Babyface did the most popular version of "Nobody Knows." If not, well I hear it all the time on LOVE 94, a smooth-jazz station in Miami but available on the Internet to be listened to. Good luck.

5 out of 5 stars A great country voice.......2000-12-17

Kevin Sharp is a true survivor and an inspiration to all those battling cancer. His cover of Tony Rich's "Nobody Knows" is really good with a touch of country. He has a good country sound, and the songs on this cd range from ballads to up-tempo numbers. I recommend this album to anyone who enjoy country artists like Colin Raye or John Michael Montgomery. One of the highlights on this album is the gorgeous romantic ballad "There's only you".

3 out of 5 stars Good performances but an unnecessary musical.......2004-04-26

Winner of the 1974 Tony Award for Best Musical (an admittedly slow season for new musicals) this show is fine example of the trend of taking successful plays and turning them into musicals. The result in this case is acceptable but nothing special has been added by musicalizing the play. That said, at least this show doesn't cheapen the source material. The performances are all fine especially Virginia Capers as Mama and Joe Morton as Walter Lee. As always, Sony has done a splendid remastering job, restoring a song that had been left off the original Lp due to timing restraints ("Booze"... although the synopsis, reprinted from the LP jacket, makes no mention of the tune.) The booklet has some interesting notes about the creation of the show. It also reprints the show's logo which makes it look like one of those inane 1960s musical comedies instead of a serious musical play. I prefer the original play (and the movie) which remain powerful enough wthout songs.

4 out of 5 stars Raisin is almost operatic.......2003-05-24

Listening to this CD we once again get to know Lorraine Hansberry... but from a different perspective. To render "Raisin in the Sun" to a musical play did her justice. This recording is superb. The liner notes do not help understand the musical plotting and I wish they did.

4 out of 5 stars Underrated throbbing score!.......2000-11-21

I own the original LP of this show and played it until it is now close to wearing out. An absolutely incredible cast brings the Raisin in the Sun story to vivid musical life. Harold Wheeler did the orchestrations and the score moves and pulses with feeling and life.

    5 out of 5 stars A Comic-Opera Treasure!.......2007-01-28

Dittersdorf is a sort of working-man's Mozart; in fact, this opera sounds similar to some of Mozart's early operas. But Mozart sought to break the rules and to explore new musical ideas; Dittersdorf is not an innovator...yet he is no less a master! This performance, too, is a materpiece of refined (not always!) comedy; the arias include some extremely difficult vocal leaps and trills, yet the primary joy is the witty verse. W.H. Auden (no less!) ramrodded this translation to English. And Anna Russell, famed for her "Analysis of Wagner's Ring Cycle" steals every scene she's in! Ad-libbing shamelessly, her introductory aria, all by itself, is worth more than the purchase price!

5 out of 5 stars an obscure delight!.......2002-07-31

Eleanor Steber's image on the cover of this set caught my eye while rummaging through the cut-out bins of San Francisco on a recent opera whirlwind. What a lost treasure this performance is - recorded "LIVE" in NYC 1965! All the principles shine, their energy ebullient. Don't hesitate, buy it and smile before it disappears.

1 out of 5 stars America's exploitation of the ignorant........2006-08-25

Is it possible we could sink any lower? A guy that before show looked like a mad scientist is dressed up like a guy from Queer eye for the straight guy. Then he goes out and sells his soul to TV america where tons of brainless teeny boppers call in on their cell phones to vote for their favorite cover singer (I say this because none of them are required to have original material all that is needed is the ability to sing) after the winner is chosen, they are given the oppurtunity to do a handful of crappy cover songs, coincendentally none of these songs were good when they came I dont understand how they would be any better when some other person sings them. So finally I give it one star. Uninspired corporate amrerican trash. Grats Clay your a tool.

        5 out of 5 stars Sensational !!!.......2005-01-09

This outstanding Bonus Track CD by the multi-talented CLAY AIKEN is the best and the greatest and the most enjoyable, exciting, and entertaining Bonus Track CD I have ever listened to, bought, and owned. I have been listening to it everyday on my CD player since when it arrived at amazon.com. Clay Aiken's singing has so much emotion, passion, and power. No other American Idol contestant has ever come close to Clay Aiken's talent and no other American Idol contestant ever will because Clay Aiken's singing is so unique and is in a class by himself. Clay Aiken's voice is so mesmerizing that it takes you to another place; it is one-of-a-kind.
