Bassist Ron Carter provided the anchor for Miles Davis's band from 1963 to 1969, becoming an indispensable part of one of the trumpeter's greatest bands. While there's plenty of reflection on Davis's music and personality here, the emphasis is squarely on Carter's own long-standing quartet, featuring pianist Stephen Scott, drummer Payton Crossley and percussionist Roger Squitero. As you'd expect from that line-up the emphasis is often on rhythm, with Carter's warm-toned, resonant bass pulsing at the heart of the music. Davis's fleet "Seven Steps to Heaven" inspires racing invention from Scott and some vibrantly explosive percussion from Squitero, while "My Funny Valentine" has Scott playing with the kind of spare lyricism that was a Davis hallmark, Carter supplying a beautiful chordal accompaniment. There's even a bell-like elegance to the subtle blues-feel of "Bag's Groove." While much of the material alludes directly to Davis's inspiration, the quartet's also reflects one of Davis's own stylistic sources, pianist Ahmad Jamal's trio. --Stuart BroomerCustomer Reviews:
Nothing Special.......2007-07-19
Inspired.......2007-06-25
It's not the project that's strange--Ron Carter was a seminal contributor to Miles' creations during Miles' most fertile period, so accusing him of plagiarism would be ludicrous--what's strange here is the choice of material. These are not Miles' heavy hitters. For the most part, they're not tunes associated exclusively with Miles at all. In fact, the track list would prompt many music lovers to put the CD back on the shelf. This is a badly shop-worn setlist. Who wants to hear another "My Funny Valentine"? What's been done with it since Chet Baker that compelled a second listen? "Someday My Prince Will Come" and "Stella by Starlight"? It sounds like an "as-seen-on-TV" compilation.
But from the first cut, it's apparent that something remarkable is happening on "Dear Miles". "Gone," one of Gil Evans' finest big band arrangements from "Porgy and Bess," is transmuted in its translation to the quartet format to become something wonderful indeed. "My Funny Valentine" gets an overhaul that rediscovers something at the heart of the tune that is beautiful in its simplicity. And then there's "Bag's Groove," a tune that Carter has beautifully reinterpreted before (notably in a duet with Jim Hall), but never to greater effect on this CD. Even "As Time Goes By" becomes something new and vibrant here.
This is Carter's best work since 1999's Latin-inspired "Orfeu," and his greatest traditional small ensemble work since Miles.
A WONDERFUL, SIZZLING MILES DAVIS TRIBUTE BY RON CARTER AND THREE TALENTED FRIENDS........2007-06-20
The 'Pieces De Resistance', the best of the best, begin with a song I listened to six consecutive times before moving on: the 5-minute "Stella by Starlight" which begins with a bridge fragment and is a robust, wonderfully-constructed, touching extended bass solo by the 'bassist-extraordinare' with some tasteful piano, percussion and great brush support. And look for Ron's amazing 'mystery note' near the end, in a performance that mirrors the Miles Davis tempo and atmosphere but stands on it's own; ditto for the tempo shifting "My Funny Valentine". "Gone" has some superlative drumming, stout Carter 'walking', great Scott pianism, and great overall interplay. "Seven Steps To Heaven" starts out in a familiar vein but launches into it's own trajectory from there with Scott absolutely on fire and with some muscular bongo playing by 'conguero' Squitero. The waltz "Some Day My Prince Will Come" starts out where we would expect and Scott turns it funky and bluesy in a great performance that almost sounds 'Brubeck-ian' near the end. There are two Ron Carter compositions: the blazing fast "Cut and Paste" with Crossley showing his 'accent' and solo mastery and Carter giving a bass-walking seminar, and the bluesy, almost "So What"-ish "595" which is a showcase for Ron's writing and arranging plus Squitero's background percussive virtuosity. Don't let the song times dissuade you, each satisfying song gets a thorough examination and exposition. Now 70, a fleet-fingered, highly-inventive Ron Carter is as potent a bassist and as vital a composer and group leader as ever, inspiring those around him as evidenced by this disc. My Highest Recommendation. Five WONDERFUL Stars!!

As fans of Peter Jackson's Lord of the Rings trilogy know, each film exists in two versions: the theatrical one and the extended one that appeared on DVD. This luxurious box set--which also comes with a detailed essay on the movie's musical themes--features the full extended score, so many cues not on the CDs of the individual movies are included. Granted, the majority of listeners will be perfectly happy with the shorter versions of the scores--it's a safe bet that most people can live without hearing, say, Ian McKellen's 35-second-long ditty "The Road Goes Ever On" at the beginning of "Bag End," or Viggo Mortensen's performance of his own composition, "The Song of Lúthien," within the track "The Nazgûl." But if you're a completist and/or a devotee of Howard Shore's pounding tympani and overwhelming choral compositions (featured particularly prominently on disc 3, a large chunk of which is devoted to a battle scene), then this set is a dream come true. Audiophiles should note that the fourth disc, a DVD, offers the score in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Sound. Fire up those speakers so the whole shire can hear. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

Released for the first time on CD, the complete score for the first film in the Lord of the Rings trilogy contains more than 180 minutes of music on three CDs plus a DVD-Audio disc of the entire score in Surround Sound. Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25
It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23
His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.
For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.
Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.
He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.
Nostalgic.......2006-02-20

With his eternally boyish tenor and cheery romantic outlook, John Pizzarelli is a stylistic world apart from Frank Sinatra, he of the manly baritone and dark sensual undercurrents. But like his Italian-American forebear, he's a consummate swinger, and he knows how to make a lyric his own. Comprised mostly of tunes written for the Chairman, Dear Mr. Sinatra is a musical fan letter without the usual schmaltz or reverence. An actively intelligent singer and guitarist, Pizzarelli reshapes the material to fit his personality, whether quietly enunciating "You Make Me Feel So Young," scatting over a brief guitar solo on "How About You?," or making the emotions sneak up on you on a medley of "I See Your Face Before Me" and "In the Wee Small Hours (of the Morning)." He's equally at home with the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra as he is with his working combo, largely because in John Clayton, he has a skilled arranger who is equally open to recasting the songs--dig the jagged rhythms, hesitation effects, and burnished tones on "I've Got You Under My Skin." Even as he asserts his own style, Pizzarelli subtly conveys his affection for Sinatra in his phrasing. The album also boasts an agreeable Frank-like running time of 39 minutes. --Lloyd SachsCustomer Reviews:
That's life, but do it your way, John........2007-05-25
Comparisons can be unflattering, but the point is they should be unnecessary. Instead, Pizzarelli practically invites them with his dedication--on grounds, moreover, that could be used by any number of singers who perform classic Songbook material through sincere and skillful interpretation. That's probably the reason that some listeners of the album feel compelled to question the comparison, whether defending the present effort or finding it wanting in some ways.
Quality over quantity........2007-03-14
John Pizzarelli has been playing jazz guitar with his legendary father, Bucky, since he was 6 years old.
John's latest album is Dear Mr. Sinatra, on which he plays songs written for Ol' Blue Eyes....
The crooner is noted for his sensitive phrasing and powerful interpretative voice, which recall the relaxed stylings of Nat "King" Cole and Chet Baker, as well as for his fluid, inventive guitar playing.
On this album of covers of songs made famous by Frank Sinatra, John Pizzarelli wisely avoids the pitfalls of Ol' Blue Eyes imitations in favor of his own intimate approach, best heard on the set's more relaxed arrangements.
My highlights are the tracks "I've Got You Under My Skin", "Nice and Easy" and "You Make Me Feel So Young".
Both attention-grabbing and supportive, his expertly arranged big band accompaniment likewise evokes the ring-a-ding-ding of the Rat Pack era while steering clear of mere pastiche.
With a total time just under 40 minutes, the program is a little short by CD standards, but the performances by John Pizzarelli and the Clayton-Hamilton Jazz Orchestra in this warm tribute to Frank Sinatra are consistently of high caliber and hit the mark every time.

Tech man Matthew Dear has spent the last several years dipping his toes into pop, and while Asa Breed doesn't exactly dive into the deep end, it gets Dear pretty well soaked. Initially associated with the Richie Hawtin school of Detroit minimalism, he's been diversifying his sound over the course of his prolific recorded output (he also records under the names Jabberjaw and False, among others) since at least 2003's Leave Luck to Heaven. But Breed is more song-oriented and accessible than anything else he's released, even as it rolls out the sharp-edged studio craft that has built Dear's reputation as a producer. Songs like "Pom Pom" are fractured new wave flashbacks while short and seemingly simple songs like "Death to Feelers" get deeply ambient, revealing new layers with repeated listens. Another trick that helps soften the record is the work done on Dear's droning baritone. An acquired taste at best, he wisely chose to give it a sharper electro edge, mixing it up in a Nick-Cave-meets-Gary Numan way as his lyrics bounce between nonsensical and sarcastic. Stripped down and largely acoustic songs like "Midnight Lovers" and "Vine to Vine" only add minimal effects, letting Dear's weird words drive the music forward. While some fans hoping for a proper DJ record might be disappointed, Asa Breed is clearly the work of a man who wants little or nothing to do with what's expected. --Matthew Cooke

Leonard Cohen must be the envy of countless singer-songwriters. Who else has been cozily buffered from the ravages of pop music than this eminent but never particularly prominent Canadian wordsmith? Nearing four decades as a recording artist, Cohen has never left his original label, despite failing to ever register anything resembling a commercial hit. Long ago shed of the "new Dylan" trappings that greeted his first recordings, Cohen now cushions his carefully wrought lyrics in smooth keyboard-and-vocal-heavy arrangements that owe far more to MOR pop and cabaret then folk-rock. His words and delivery have become more nuanced and playful as he's grayed. Listen to the sexy self-deprecation of "Because of" ("Because of a few songs/ Wherein I spoke of their mystery/ Women have been/ Exceptionally kind in my old age") or the weary resolve of his 9-11 statement, "On That Day" ("Did you go crazy or did you report/ On that day they wounded New York?"). Dear Heather, likes its creator, is at once new and old, familiar and fresh. --Steven StolderCustomer Reviews:

In summary: I have to clean my CD, because i had played it over and over, and over and over...and I think it's dirty now...Like they said: "In the repetition you'll find the taste"
Leonard's voice and Anjani's vocals make an amazing contrast. I give this CD a "FIVE" . Some may say because it fits my personality. I love contrast . I like being sad and then happy right after. I like to sooth my soul. I like Leonard Cohen.
Stick to Composing.......2007-01-10
is still of very high quality. Cohen's voice, while never good, is absolutely frightful on this album. It is almost impossible to listen to the CD in one sitting-the strain on the ears is too great.
Reaping and Reporting.......2006-06-26
Now an elder statesman, Cohen is neither afraid of his talent nor afraid to lose it. On this collection he sings the poetry of Lord Byron and Frank Scott and adds a verse to the country music classic, "Tennessee Waltz." He trifles with poetic tropes from unrequited love to nightingales to flowers. Cohen manages humor here through irony, as only a poet can, stopping just short of taking himself seriously.
The poet's life is to dangle willingly from life's apocalyptic edge and report back. Cohen doesn't dangle quite as precariously here as in earlier albums, but he does report with enough spark to make this album a worthy addition to any collection.

Ordered by a judge to turn over the profits from two albums to the first wife he'd left, Marvin Gaye produced this bitter, sad, bewildered masterwork. Over sprawling funk tracks, he questions her, himself, love, family, and, of course, asks, "Why do I have to pay attorney fees?" Both incomparably smooth and incontrovertibly twisted, Here, My Dear is Gaye with the mask off: even the multiple vocal overdubs can't hide his pain and his weariness. --Rickey WrightCustomer Reviews:
love is there so is saddness.......2006-11-10
Soothing for the bewildered & broken-hearted.......2006-06-09
During my trials & tribulations (literally), I was on an emotional rollercoaster of anger, self-doubt, the pangs of disprized love and what not, and absolutely nothing seemed to help. I was devastated and exhausted.
I picked up Gaye's masterpiece by coincidence, as I had seen it featured in the presentation of the all time top 100 hundred rock and pop albums, by one of the UK's largest music magazines. (Possibly Q or Mojo).
I was immediately attracted to it upon happening incidentally upon it in the shelfs of a music store, and started listening.
For all of last summer, I never *stopped* listening to it. I took it with me everywhere. Whenever pains and self-doubts and remnants of profound loving emotions for my ex came along, I put in my discman and was immediately balanced and brought into a pleasing, if somewhat bittersweet, equilibrium.
As noted by some, track no. 11, the 8 m and 12 sec puffed-up sci-fi opus of "A Funky Space Reincarnation" doesn't really belong on this album, and upsets the flow of it. But in the age of CD-players, Ipods etc., one can easily skip it, and I frequently did.
I agree completely that this is one of the top 100 albums of all time, and must definitely be one of the top 10 soul albums of the world history, at any rate.
I recommend it as the perfect antidote to an ugly and/or painful relationship break-up - as have many other reviewers on this product page - and especially in those cases involving court trials and/or lawyers.
This record will save you innumerable hours of pain and anguish, and possibly even drug store tabs.
I do not know how it will come across to someone who as of yet have been spared of harrowing relationship break-ups, and speculate that it might not resonnate fully to such fortunate, youthful people. Hopeless romantics should stay clear of it, and leave it to be cherished by those of us whose doctors would have easily prescribed it had they known it's healing capacities.
For the baggage-laden adults who have been in places where Gaye painfully wails and laments from in this everlasting, allways fresh and soulsoothing opus, I truly recommend this painstaking effort by the late soul-crooner, as his most elaborate, resonnating and to-the-core delivery effort, and as part of an anti-blues ("blue funk") regimen along with DVD's such as Atom Egoyans "Exotica", and the idiosyncratic Jim Carrey-effort of "Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind".
Feel better!
Tell it like it is Marvin.......2006-03-14
Underrated and overlooked.......2006-02-24
Dark Classic.......2005-12-30
Everybody knows the story involving his ex-wife and the court order granting her the proceeds from the album, but it bears repeating just how much nerve it took to title this album "Hear, My Dear" and write the whole thing about their stormy relationship. Throughout the album, Marvin bitingly wonders why he's been forced to part with the fruits of his labor, and there is no denying the frustration that seeps through at every turn - "What could I do? The judge said she got to keep on livin' the way she's accustomed to." Yet, there is no denying the love he once had for Anna, the sense of loss, the anger and self-doubt - pretty much all of the emotions that anyone would go through during a divorce. It's all laid out here, for everyone to hear.
Musically, this is a fantastic album, and Marvin continues to impress me as a composer. The songs are subtly complex, with accents of jazz overtop the mellow yet undeniable funk. His vocals are, as always, bittersweet and smooth as can be. The real reason that "Hear, My Dear" deserves its classic status, though, is because Marvin put together a thematically consistent string of songs that, above all else, are honest. This is one of the most honest albums ever.
The one low point on the album is the somewhat plodding "A Funky Space Reincarnation". Here, Marvin spouts ridiculously goofball sci-fi lyrics that would make George Clinton cringe. All the more jarring is the juxtaposition of the song next to the deeply personal and dark material that surrounds it. One gets the impression that this is what the whole album could have been, and in that regard it does serve to make you even more pleased with what it actually turned out to be.
This one slight misstep aside, "Here, My Dear" represents a great artistic achievement for Marvin Gaye, and for popular music in general. At the same time sad, hopeful, funny and disturbing, it is an essential for any soul or funk fan.

a voice teacher and early music fan.......2007-02-09
The founder of English hymnody is Isaac Watts (1674-1748), whose work in reforming congregational song texts culminated in the publication of his 'Hymns and Spiritual Songs' in 1707. Watts' collection was as complete and comprehensive a set of hymns as had ever been proposed for English worship and it raised the profile of the hymn sufficiently to overcome the prevailing psalmody. The great flowering period of English hymnody began with the work of the Methodist hymn-writers John Wesley (1703-1791) and his brother Charles (1707-1788). The Wesleys gave great prominence to hymns within their Methodist worship and published many books.
The modern hymn book is a collection of hymns drawn from various times and places. This most accomplished recording by St. Paul's Cathedral Choir presents 16 well-loved hymns from 'The New English Hymnal'. A great number of the hymns, which originate from many different eras and traditions, are given an extra musical dimension by John Scott's original descants and thrilling brass arrangements.
Over the years, I have found myself purchasing mostly the recordings of English choirs. They seem to have incredible vocal skills, perfectly executed phrases, flawless diction and some unidentifiable ingredient that makes them very appealing to hear. Of course, I personally enjoy the all male choirs sound; boy sopranos and male altos make the difference. This is a very appealing group of hymns!!!!!

New Years Day has been making quite a lot of noise and touching the hearts of many with their ultra-catchy, anthemic songs that just happen to be loaded with daggers for lyrics. Making them unique in the boy dominated punk scene is the bold presence of 22-year old singer Ash Costello, who provides distinct and empowering vocals to a rock band that can really back it up. The result is "My Dear", the debut album that Alternative Press calls "Punk with a nice Vampira bite," and which prompted AbsolutePunk.com to declare them "A real contender for `Next Big Thing.'" New Years Day will roll out their sharp-spiked pop punk nationwide on this summer's Vans Warped Tour starting on June 28, following dates in April and May opening for Ozma and William Tell. The first single off "My Dear" is the infections pop punk anthem "I Was Right." Its edgy companion video is directed by VMA winner Shane Drake (Panic! At The Disco, Fall Out Boy, Gym Class Heroes) and will help NYD make the leap from MySpace phenomenon to rock stars.
Customer Reviews:
Catchy yet Falls Short a bit..........2007-07-02
Well,Their Both In the Same Music Genre and both have female lead singers..ANYWAYS!
The lead chick Of NYD Is Pretty hot which is a plus and the Music is very upbeat and Pop/punk/Rock And The Lead singer's voice isnt BAD...But it Definately falls short.
Its obvious She doesnt have much of a Vocal Range in any of her songs and Her voice can even come off as slightly annoying to me at times...The cd Is great and All...But the lead singer Has Some Growing to Do Vocally....
Overall Its a good CD and i hope by their Second album She will gain a bit more diversity and whatnot.
Loved it!.......2007-06-27
