Thematically, director Robert Altman's career sometimes seems an endless series of left turns into the unexpected; the one constant has been a rich and rewarding attention to the intricacies of character development and interaction. Composer Patrick Doyle underscores Gosford Park's Merchant-Ivory/Agatha Christie/Altman-wit fusion and '30s British upper-class setting with a score that's period spot-on, character-rich, and often sadly evocative. Doyle's restraint is masterful, often leaning on piano, accordion, and small string arrangements that emphasize the characters' intimacies and the film's drawing room settings. Key to the story are a handful of prewar songs by Ivor Novello (who's also a character in the film), ranging from the sprightly humor of "And Her Mother Came Too" and "What a Duke Should Be" to the romantic schmaltz of "I Can Give You the Starlight" and "Why Isn't It You?" The latter is performed here at the piano (and, remarkably, live before the cameras) by Jeremy Northam. Leavened by a small jazz ensemble and a few darkly ominous cues, Doyle's score is an understated gem. --Jerry McCulley

The original music is creative and very listenable. It is typical of popular music of the 1930s. This CD is highly recommended to those people who enjoy music from the 1920s and 1930s.

Better than the movie.......2004-12-08

Many people, I believe, buy a soundtrack because they are mesmerized by the movie and want to extend the experience by listening to something that reminds them of it. But "Gosford Park" is hardly that kind of movie. It is brilliant and atmospheric as it analyzes the British class system, but that's hardly the kind of thing that wins the heart. The soundtrack of this movie was my favorite CD from last year, and the reasons I liked it had nothing to do with the movie.

Why is this music so compelling and winning?

First, it is fun to discover the marvellous talent of Ivor Norvello. His music is half of the charm of the soundtrack. Some songs are funny ("Her mother came too"), some beautiful ("I can give you the starlight") and some poignant ("The land of might have been"). I had not encountered Norvello before this film. Jeremy Northam's perfect delivery of Norvello's songs would not leave me after I'd seen the film. Days later, I found the songs had taken up residence in the back of my head, insisting that I go back to the soundtrack to make them a permanent part of my musical life.

Second, there is the charm of the orchestral music composed by Patrick Doyle. Sometimes people wonder "why aren't they writing beautiful classical music any more?" Well, they are. It goes into soundtracks, however, rather than being commissioned by orchestras. The test for the quality of Doyle's compositions is that you don't need to refer to the film to appreciate this music. It simply charms and intrigues us with its own merits.

My third reason for loving this CD is too personal to mention here.

I give this CD my highest personal recommendation.

I don't mind the repeating themes, but the CD is too short!.......2004-06-08

Unlike many reviewers here, I didn't buy the CD to hear the Ivor Novello songs or Jeremy Northam's voice. I actually liked the instrumental tracks, and never actually thought I'd like to listen to something played on an accordion.

However, Mr. Doyle's music portrays the lethargy of the snobby Upstairs very well to the contrast of the relative energy of Novello's songs, which the Downstairs servants enjoy, but the Upstairs people can't stand.

My dislikes about the CD include the female singer who can't really sing and the length of the CD. Some of these cues are only about a minute long. WHY pay so much money for such a short CD??? Why not add more music??

Overall though, if you liked either Doyle's music or Novello's songs (hopefully the listener will like both), it's a CD worth getting.

Excellent Mix.......2003-04-23

I fell in love with this soundtrack when I watched Gosford Park in the cinemas.

Sometimes period music, sometimes mystery music, sometime personal music. Jeremy Northam's songs are simply delicious and I love hearing them.

I liken the style (not type) of mix to You've Got Mail.

Heaps of fun and lovely to listen to.

When I saw the movie at the theater I kept thinking I've got to have the soundtrack to this movie because it is so beautiful. I also really enjoyed the sung songs 6.And Her Mother Came Too, 10.I Can Give You The Starlight, 11.What A Duke Should Be, 16. Only For A While, 20. The Way It's Meant To Be, 24. The Land That Might-Have-Been!! I think that Patrick Doyle did a wonderful job of scoring this movie the just fits right in with it all, I only wish there was more to listen to!! I highly recommend this album to everyone who liked the movie and people who love great soundtracks, you will not be sorry if you buy this!!!!

This album is Cafe Noir's best recording in my opinion. There is song after song of great and memorable music. The guitar work is amazing, and the compositional style is highly refined. There is so much subtle beauty in this album, as well as an infectious flare. I love this album, and I hate that the group seemingly wont be making any more music.

Melancholy the way it used to be ..........2003-04-08

Waltz King is definitely my favourite CD: the melody of the songs, the viruosity of the musicians and above all the melancholic yet happy sounds of the violin... For a moment you will think you are listening to a beautiful Hungarian gypsy song, while on the other, the serene sounds will remind you of Chopin.

Ah, I just love Cafe Noir. I remember them from Dallas, way back in the '80s. At any rate, if you are looking for intelligent, European-sounding background music for your next cocktail party, this is it. Even the singing is low-key and melancholy.

Cafe Noir's self-titled first CD is an instrumental modern classic of gypsy 'n' classical musics... BUT this CD is a disappointment to my ears as i do not enjoy the singer or his lyrics or his compositions on this CD & other Cafe Noir CDs... i bought it & quickly sold it at my local used CD store...

Good but not Live.......2000-01-22

The CD is good, but not nearly as good as I was wishing for. It just didn't have the same style as the live performance I bought it at did. While it is still really cool, you have to see this group perform live. They are absolutely fantastic and like nothing I've ever heard before.

Excellent Rock and Roll.......2006-07-05

I was amazed to find this sleeper. I heard the first track on a compilation of songs and looked to see if I could find it on Amazon. Out of print and only available used, I figured, 'What the Heck, It's only seventy-two cents".
WOW! Not a bad song on it. I highly recommend to any one who likes early Black Crows or Alanis Morisette. What a sleeper ! Makes for great driving down the highway CD.
Gotta give her 5 stars.

Background Music for Living.......2007-04-23

This CD leaves me feeling peaceful and calm. I listen to it when I'm studying, cooking dinner, or reading on the sofa. It is truly lovely music and I like to think that if my life were a movie, this is the soundtrack upon which it would play.

Good symphonic prog from France.......2007-06-06

I really enjoy the music from the French prog/experimental scene and find the intense emotion of the French bands very appealing - some may find it overly dramatic, but it works for me. This somewhat obscure 1975 album by Carpe Diem is yet another great release from the French scene and presents a great mix of proggy ensemble work, cool synthesizer sounds, and great arrangements. In terms of influences, I can hear some English prog, but I can not nail it down to a single band so I won't. Suffice it to say that this music is very much in the symphonic prog vein.

The lineup on En Regardant Passer le Temps included Christian Truchi (ARP String Ensemble, electric piano, modified Farfisa organ, vocals); Gilbert Abbennati (electric guitar and acoustic guitar); Alain Berge (electric bass guitar); Alain Faraut (drums and percussion); and Claude-Marius David (soprano saxophone; flute; percussion). I have to admit that I love the subtle keyboard work on this album - the modified Farfisa organ sound is highly reminiscent of the sound that fellow French prog band Ange got. Christian seemed more interested in creating atmospheres than highly virtuosic scalar runs. Overall this is a group of great players and there is excellent individual playing and ensemble work. The few vocal passages that are present are very good (and in French).

Musically, this is full blown symphonic prog that is not unlike a lot of the stuff that was coming out of England at the time, although there is the distinctive stamp of the French prog scene on the music. The four tracks range in length from 3'48 to 12'50" and the overall sound is very full, with wonderful keyboard textures and great arrangements. The more pastoral moments on the album feature flute and quiet electric guitar - OK I will admit that the pastoral sections remind me a bit of early Genesis. When the band gets going full steam however, that is when things get really exciting. In general, these guys could write pretty interesting pieces and there are some very nice melodies and good use of dynamics.

Musea did a pretty good job of remastering this album and there are loads of liner notes. The sound quality is not bad at all - the original album used 16-track recording. Remarkably, the album was recorded over a ten day period and produced by the band with help from a recording engineer.

All in all this is a pretty good album of somewhat obscure symphonic prog from the French scene and is recommended. Other great prog/experimental albums from France include two spacey synth-heavy albums by Pulsar (Strands of the Future (1976); and Halloween (1977); a few heavier albums by Ange (Au dela du delire (1974); and Emile Jacotey (1975); and at the complete opposite end of the spectrum are a few albums by the avant-garde chamber progressive group Magma (Magma Live (1975); and Udu Wudu (1976). Magma is not for the faint of heart and presents a truly original contribution to progressive rock as a genre.

Elaborate and sophisticated space rock.......2006-03-17

Carpe Diem is a band that completely captures my imagination. This, their debut album from 1975 is one of the finest French progressive albums from the 1970's that I have heard. They are particularly fine in developing and arranging their material and are superb musicians concentrating on developing the inner balance of their material and revealing a sophisticated logic in their song construction. It is essential that the listener should listen to this several times as there is a dialectical logic to the melodic and harmonic structure of the songs; building their melodic accomplishments in a continuous and evolving symphonic expression.The band 'Yes' were masters of this art, and they seem to have found the secret and intelligence to propel what appears to be a simple and engaging riff into a grandeloquent expression. Instrumental interaction is superb and each instrument is assigned a virtuous and demanding role unfolding in a variegated texture of rich harmonic colors.Although they lacked the dynamics of Yes, Carpe Diem were basically an elaborate space-rock band; and initial comparisons to Daevid Allen era Gong are not unfounded, with some psychedelic guitar, keyboard, and synth swirling out of the basic song structure into space rock dimensions, and the saxophone resemblence to Didier Malherbe is uncanny. But Carpe Diem is a much more sophisticated band, relying not so much on improvisation and psychedelic effects as on complicated frameworks within which to elaborate a kind of conceptual hallucination.
This mostly instrumental album is a superb example of French progressive music and one of my personal favorites.

More musical than standard new age.......1999-11-17

It's a terrible injustice that Dahlander is so little known. "Arbuckle Sunrise" is as close to perfect a song as I've ever heard. This is a stronger collection than his first, and includes a cover song--First Gymnopedie--which is devastating. Dahlander obviously relishes the power of music to be both utterly simple and overwhelmingly emotional at the same time. I like this much, much better than George Winston and Liz Story, who are better known.

Carpe Diem is a towering achievement. In an age when even the lamest nu-metal bands sound like the devil stubbing his toe in the depths of hell, the true yardstick of quality isn't anger or aggression, but precision. Sacramento four-piece Will Haven--who've toured with the Deftones and Limp Bizkit and been feted by Slipknot--know exactly how to turn a whisper into a scream. Drawing on a set of influences that stretch beyond metal into the taut dynamics of hardcore, Carpe Diem is a punishing yet exhilarating journey into the heart of noise. Simple melodies are set aside for grooves and riffs that have a lurching elasticity, while singer Grady Avenell murders his own larynx in the quest for catharsis. "Saga" and "Alpha Man" are perfectly realized examples of post-nu-metal hardcore, and "Bats" even drifts in a brief moment of Labradford-style post-rock before leaping back into the fray. I really do not understand why Will Haven never got the attention they deserved. Crap bands like Simple Plan get plenty of attention, and yet bands such as this don't, really. I guess that's the way of the world. If it's catchy, then it's good. But make a person actually try and THINK when they listen to the songs themselves, and it becomes too much. MTV can't handle it, they rarely play any videos and if they do it's mostly (c)rap and other gibberish. These guys actually have talent and if you have a good and un-poserish ear for music, check Will Haven out.

No, no, no, no, no........2005-05-25

Will Haven began as a fairly promising band. Their self-titled EP was a blend of effect-laden nu metal riffery and west coast hardcore. Their first full-length album, El Diablo, expanded upon the sound of their EP. Then came WHVN, a hit-or-miss album full of very samey, repetitive songwriting with the exception of a few standout tracks ("Jaworski" and the following track, "Slopez," come to mind). Following WHVN, it was clear the band was beginning to lose its cohesion. Following the split of their original drummer, guitarist Jeff Irwin expressed in interviews that the band was supposedly unhappy with the results of WHVN, while vocalist Grady Avenell's opinions about the album seemed to suggest that he and Jeff weren't even in the same band.

Then came Carpe Diem, the sound of a once-promising band settling into safe, unadventurous songwriting (I don't think there's one song on this CD that doesn't feature that same triplet drumbeat coupled with a one-note chugging guitar riff), multitracked guitars (there must be at least 8 guitar tracks -- compare the slick production to the gritty sound of the first few albums), and tired, old lyrical content. Soon after Carpe Diem was released, Will Haven called it quits.

I find the best use of this CD is as a coaster.

Highly Recommended.......2005-03-03

This CD is very highly recommended, not just to Will Haven fans, but to those who want to experience them for the first time. If you're new to Will Haven, i'd say get this first and go backwards from there. This isn't as experimental as their previous album "WHVN", but it's still very worthy.

The only bad thing, as other reviewers have stated, is the repetitiveness of some songs. I actually don't find the riffs repetitive, personally i feel that on some songs the drumming doesn't, or hardly, changes a beat. It just stays the same. The riffs on the other hand, are extremely clean and heavy. Will Haven have a distinctive guitar sound that no one else i can think of has.

Starting off the album pretty slow and dark with "S.H.R", the first time you listen to it you aren't expecting the kick in the face "Saga" throws at you. From there, one of the best tracks on here by far, "Carpe Diem", comes on and it's brutally heavy. Grady Avanell is quite possibly the best screamer for this type of music, this genre, that i can think of. And the riff on "Carpe Diem", as i said, is plain brutal.

"Bats" is quite long at 7:28mins, but is still very listenable and leads into "Dressed in Night Clothes" perfectly. "Dressed in Night Clothes" is headbanging almost straight-away. At about the 2 minute mark, it just rips into a trademark Will Haven down-tuned riff. "Dolph Lundgren" (Named after the crap actor, for a joke i think..) is possibly the heaviest song, all the way through, on this album. Although one of the shortest at 3:22mins.

The next track "Finest Our", another reviewer i read said was the hidden gem on this album, and i'd have to agree. It's great to listen to. At first listen you'd probably think that you'd skip it, the next time you listen to the album, but this song actually grows on you. And the eerie, echo-like, screaming vocals by Grady towards the end of this almost 5 minute song, are great and fit perfectly. "Alpha Male" the next track, is yet again one of the heaviest songs on this CD. If you read the lyrics, and i've read interviews with the band, this song is actually about Jocks, and Jock Mentality.

"Miguel" is a very clean track, much like all of these songs, and is very heavy as well. At about the 1 minute mark, it kicks into another down-tuned "Dun Dun Dun DunDun" riff. The song is one of the longest songs on here too. "Moving To Montana" is the final track, and is the longest. The final riff goes for about 2 minutes. Sure, that does sound repetitive, but it totally fits in with the song. And it's a great riff as well. The song finishes, and then there's silence..But if you fast forward a little bit, you get another "song" which i don't think has a name. But it's much in the same vein as "S.H.R", the first song. It's as haunting, but without the punch of "Saga" at the end of it.

By now, if you are a fan of the Hardcore/Metal genre, and haven't heard of Will Haven..you should absolutely check this CD out. It's definitely the easiest, of their 3 albums, to get into for newcomers. From there, you can then get into and appreciate the experimental "Static" sounds of the previous album, and probably in my opinion their best album, "WHVN". And then to their debut album, "El Diablo", which is also good with some of their classic songs such as "I've Seen My Fate" and "Stick Up Kid" to "Ego's Game" and "Foreign Film". And then there is their DvD named "Foreign Films" which is also pretty good, and obviously a must-have for fans of this, sadly now defunct, band.

All in all, this is extremely very highly recommended, and i doubt if you enjoy listening to clean, heavy riffs with brutal screaming, that you'll hate this record. It's a very worthy album by Will Haven, as are their other 2 albums, and is a must-have for fans of the band. Newcomers to the band..Enjoy.

Great CD..........2003-08-12

This is a very good Hardcore/metal CD. Most of the songs are very heavy and have strong melodies even without hammering the drums or breaking the strings, you can feel it. Maybe the only bat thing bout this CD is that some of the somgs are very similiar between them, and that makes some songs kinda boring, but it definitely is a MUST HAVE...

are missing.Will Haven plays haunting metal.These guys are great.
The vocals will knock you out of your seat.With 3 CD's under their belts.Any dark metal fans will go crazy over this CD.They
are another band that you have to hear to believe.Will Haven will
fill that hardcore ich.All 3 CD's they have recorded-WHVN-

Hauntingly beautiful.......2004-04-27

I absolutely love this CD. I first discovered this group on some compilation album that featured "Tut Hi Tschi, Man Hi Tschi" and I became obsessed to find the album, which was no easy task, as it was fairly obscure even then. I believe I bought it from Amazon, unsure it was the right one. What a joy to have it, though. The musicians are virtuosi, the compositions are joyful and varied, and the melodies are memorable. It's a captivating mix of Gypsy folk, classical and Texas swing. Django Reinhart and Stephane Grappelli certainly made their stamp on the group, but so have Bob Wills, Chopin and Raymond Scott. Highly recommended.

Superb Modern Gipsi-Style Music !!!!.......2002-07-01

this is a great modern gipsi style music CD !!! very progressive gipsi-styled swing in the style of Romane [IMO, gypsy jazz guitars' best modern composer ] along with interesting interpretations of Villa Lobos' Bachanai Braziliana & Paganini's 24th caprice... not really mainstream gypsy music BUT amazing violin playing by Gale Hess [ one of the best post-Grappelli classicly inspired violinists i've heard ] & the guitarists on this CD can really swing... if you have adventurous ears & love modern gipsi music- this is a great instrumental CD for you

Café Noir's music is eclecticism at its best. The band's music is esoteric and eccentric---and at the same time, it's exciting and inviting. With roots in Django's swing, the Austin, Texas, group has pushed the limits of Gypsy jazz. This, the band's first, self-titled CD was released on Carpe Diem Records in 1988, and featured an eclectic mix of originals, a musette piece by Tony Moreno and Joe Colombo, and a Paganini theme. Notice was served that Café Noir was up to something new. All of Café Noir's releases are immensely creative albums from a talented group of musicians seeking to extend Gypsy jazz--and music in general--to its furthest extremes.
