Bassist Charlie Haden was an integral part of Ornette Coleman's pioneering avant-garde groups in the '50s and '60s and led his own equally forward-thinking Liberation Music Orchestra. His ensemble Quartet West, with tenor saxophonist Ernie Watts, drummer Larance Marable, and pianist Alan Broadbent, revealed a sentimental side of his musical personality that surprised many. This recording, with string arrangements by Broadbent, sounds like a soundtrack to a Raymond Chandler film as Haden's sturdy bass tones make him a worthy supporting actor. But although Shirley Horn's ethereal voice sparkles on "Lonely Town," "In Love in Vain," and "I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out of My Life," and crooner Bill Henderson's towering pipes are radiant on "Why Did I Choose You," "Ruth's Waltz," "You My Love," and "Easy on the Heart," all of the material is in pretty much the same ballad tempo, which, compounded by the time length of the CD, robs it of the romantic resonance it could truly shine on the listener. --Eugene Holley Jr.
Customer Reviews:
Age breeds a shining moment.......2003-11-20
The criticisms miss the point. This is an effort that does a rare thing - it brings together men and women who can put the experience of life to judicious use in their art. Unlike listening to the deterioration other performers have faced, in later years, at the hands of studio production teams that no longer know what to do with them, Charlie Haden has found a way to create a beautiful volume of space in which to let the years of these venerated performers shine through. It is in this space you shall hear the notes of lives lived and savored.
Nice but dismissable........2001-08-09
Haden's pleasant miscellany of neglected but deserving ballads is indeed a mixed bag, but somehow his focus, purpose, and method elude this listener. Neophyte writers are frequently enjoined to compose with a sharp, definitive, unified "thesis." Haden could have used a bit of coaching along these lines before producing this collection. Even drawing upon a common composer (as opposed to ranging from Kern to Rachmaninoff to public domain) might have provided the needed coherence to the project.
In any case, it's always a welcome experience to hear Shirley Horn; the revival of a touching ballad like "In Love in Vain" merits our appreciation; and though I was never a big fan of Bill Henderson (an acquired taste), he deserves to be recorded based on the evidence of this recording.
In sum, this album is more than anything else a "sampler" and should have been priced accordingly.
Disappointing by Quartet West standards.......2001-05-09
The outstanding Quartet West album is 'Always Say Goodbye'. On that CD, Broadbent demonstrates his skills at orchestral arrangement, and Haden deftly selects great oldies to intermingle with some of his own superb compositions. Haden also takes some historic performances -- such as Jo Stafford on vocals -- to bring a resonance to the new covers. The experiment was very successful.
You can see the logic behind this subsequent album: instead of using dusty old recordings, why don't we use today's state-of-the-art production to capture the voices of several current artists? And why don't we let Alan orchestrate the whole album?
The trouble is that the orchestration, beautiful though it is throughout, constrains the band terribly. And the vocals swamp the album. (Actually the Jo Stafford track on 'Always Say Goodbye' is one of the weakest on the album.) They say that the saxophone is the instrument closest to the human voice, and it is Ernie Watts who suffers most on this album, The sax is simply crowded out by all the singing. It is only on the stand-out track, 'Prelude en la mineur', an instrumental re-working of a Ravel piece, that Watts finally gets a chance to let rip.
Shirley Horn's vocals are fine, particularly on 'Lonely Town'. But I simply cannot listen to any of the tracks containing Bill Henderson's voice, and sadly, there are four of them.
The most touching song is the last one, where Haden himself bravely takes the vocal lead. It's a song his mother used to sing on the radio, back in the early 1940s, when the entire Haden family would appear on KWTO Springfield. It is a farewell to the dead, and also a reassurance that one day they will meet again.
If you want a quick survey of this CD, check out tracks #1, #9 and #13. It's a long way from the days of Haden's playing with Ornette Coleman and the Liberation Orchestra, and it's very mellow.
If you breathe and have ears, buy this record!.......2001-04-15
I first heard of Charlie Haden on Dublin's best radio music show - The Mystery Train presented by John Kelly on RTE Radio 1. I bought this CD and it has never been off my current play list. This is beautiful music that touches the heart. Listen to Wayfaring Stranger, Lonely Town, I'm Gonna Laugh You Right Out Of My Life, or Ruth's Walz after a tough day at the office or jammed in traffic and you will be back in touch with the good things in life. As someone who has evolved though Thin Lizzy, The Eagles, Eric Clapton, Queen, U2, Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong, BB King, Grant Green etc, Charlie Haden is proof of my graduation. After since buying other and even better Haden CD's, I am looking forward to seeing him in concert with Quartet West here in Dublin on April 29. BUY IT NOW!
A Night and a Lonely Town.......2000-05-24
Despite its problems, I think this album still deserves a five-star rating. Seemingly inspired by the music of moody classic cinema, a listener might well envision a seedy nightclub in a fog-swept black & white San Francisco of the 1940s or a tearful Ingrid Bergman about to board a twin-propellor leaving Rick and Casablanca behind her forever.
Regardless of which side of the Atlantic you envision on your moody musical journey, this is definitely a lounging type of music, perfect for lazy Sunday afternoons, after-theatre drives around town on warm summer evenings, warm candle-lit baths, or romantic dinners for two. The beautifully romantic ballads range from the longing "Lonely Town" to the mostly-resolute "I'm Going to Laugh You Right Out of My Life" to the quietly complacent "The Folks Who Live on the Hill." Interspersed with these great standards, however, are wonderful instrumental pieces which frame the remaining vocals with stunningly dramatic moods.
The only flaw is the rather unappealing voice of Bill Henderson, who seems to be suffering from a weak set of lungs, if not from lack of enthusiasm. Henderson seems to strive for the vocal capabilities of Shirley Horn, who sings on 1, 4, 7 and 10, but is incapable of achieving those same dramatic pitches of his fellow artist. Nevertheless, he does an adequate job on "Ruth's Waltz" and "Easy on the Heart" even if "Why Did I Choose You" is downright painful to listen to. Haden, who sings on 13, seems similarly incapable of reaching Horn's heights, but "Wayfaring Stranger," the traditional song he chose to render, is capable of carrying itself with the slow somber tone it evokes in the listener.
Regardless of its faults, this remains a beautiful album. I definitely recommend it to anyone who loves the kind of sit-at-home music it captures so very well in its beautifully jazzy tunes that are, at the very least, easy on the ears.

"Hollywood's greatest high sea adventure scores".......2001-11-30
Some of the best scores to come out of Hollywood, were of buried treasure and pirates...an example would be early classics such as ~ "CAPTAIN BLOOD"(Korngold)..."THE SEA HAWK"(Korngold)..."THE BUCCANEER"(Elmer Bernstein)..."ADVENTURES OF DON JUAN"(Max Steiner), this score is a personal favorite of mine, featuring Errol Flynn in the romantic lead, when he appeared on the Silver Screen all eyes were on him, when leaving the theatre all the boys would be practicing their swordplay.
Other stand outs are ~ "THE SEVENTH VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(Bernard Herrmann)..."THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD"(Miklos Rozsa)...and this one I remember so well as a youngster ~ "THE CRIMSON PIRATE"(William Alwyn), which portrays the Jolly Roger, who was never so jolly, until Burt Lancaster arrived on the scene, Alwyn's score mixed with Lancaster's devil-may-car attitude captures the mood of every young boys dream of high adventure on the seas and pirate treasure.
Silva Screen has come up with "Screen Classics Scores", and The City Of Prague Philharmonic, conducted by Paul Bateman delivers the goods in high fashion... a "True Swashbuckler Adventure", and one you shouldn't miss!

A great collection of some classic "pirate" themes........1999-11-16
This CD takes you back to the era of the true swashbuckler. From Errol Flynn to Captain Hook, the essence of the high seas is captured in these selections. The level of performance is adequate but the true value of this CD is the wonderful themes chosen for this project.

Kunzel A Consistent Winner.......2007-07-12
I have yet to find anything that Kunzel does on CD that lacks imagination and quality. His renditions are excellent. Mastering quality is outstanding - leading to a most excellent product on just about any stereo system. I would have to say that "Kunzel" on the label is equal to the quality you would expect from RCA "Red Seal" products.

"when sword-play & heroes filled the silver screen".......2001-07-11
On a scale of five stars for performance...five for quality of recording...this CD comes up aces all around...featuring "The City Of Prague Philharmonic"...conducted by Paul Bateman...have once again risen to the occasion...hit the mark..."THE MARK OF ZORRO!"
Of course there are stand outs ~ "MARK OF ZORRO", the unforgettable theme by composer Alfred Newman, is high on the list of "film-score-buff" collectors...instantly recognizable..."THE SWORDSMAN OF SIENA-PRELUDE", Italian composer Mario Nascimbene score is graceful and exhilarating with melody..."ROBIN & MARIAN SUITE", outstanding composition by John Barry is so overwhelming with melody...themes flow like a clear clean sparkling stream.
Silva Screen Records America remains the leader when it comes to soundtrack quality and content...an enjoyable CD, even if you have never seen any of the films...when we talk about "film classics"...this is what we're talking about.

Pretty darn good, at least for a Silva compilation CD........1999-05-31
Getting right to the numbers. On a scale of five and rounding up, I'd rate the CD at four stars: three (Bateman) and five (Raine) for performance; three for compilation selections; and four for sound quality). If I use a "Silva-only compilations rating system," this CD gets five stars out of five (extremely few Silva compilations rise above one star using this system). Rather than a "Z" on the front of the box, it should be a "RH" for "The Mark of Robin Hood"--8% of the CD has to do with a single Zorro score; 44% covers many (but not all) silver-screen RHs. Perhaps most aggrievedly missing, is Mel Brooks' Robin Hood: Men In Tights (1993-USA)--it should have been included if only for the chorus selection that clarifies the film's title! Despite what it says on the back of the box, Mr. Bateman does not conduct all sections; Mr Nic Raine conducts a suite from The Duelists (1977-UK). Like Mr. Charles Gerhardt, any film score conducted by Mr. Raine (he has done many on Silva) should be bought instantly--they're among the best recordings available today! Finally, unlike virtually all other Silva releases, you don't need a jewelers eye piece to read what's on the CD, the conductor's name, or the name of the orchestra--but that eye piece still comes in handy when you try to read the CD booklet!

Pure Energy.......2000-09-17
What an incredible recording! What energy, what a fantastic voice! The songs, many of which are rarely recorded, are presented in a wonderful upbeat and stylish mood. It's almost impossible not to love this CD. Her tributes to the greats of the silver screen are very witty and yet not overly campy. Judy manages to almost one up Carmen Miranda, with her Carmen Tribute. I must say I never really liked the song "Thanks alot, but no thanks" until I heard Judy's version. This CD will leave you exhausted but with lots of happy memories. It will also leave you wishing that Judy Kaye recorded more often!!

With Love.......2001-08-22
I didn't think I'd like this CD when I received it because of the vocals. I had imagened it would have been only instrumental. When I checked out what artists were singing on it, it was like a "Who's Who" and I'm very pleased. If you want a variety of some of the greatest voices in your collection, here it is. #1..."Vesti la guibba" from I Pagliacci was very well projected by Franco Corelli. #2..."Intermezzo" from Cavalleria Rusticana was beautiful. Seemed to lift and suspend you in the air surrounded by music. It just ended too soon. #3..."Sola, perduta e abbandonata" from Manon Lescaut was clear and a little powerful at times. #4..."Una Furtiva lagrima" from L'Elisir d' Amore with Nicolai Gedda's voice seemed foirced at times but was very well done. #5..."Sempre libera" from La Traviata with Victoria De Los Angeles seemed to lound in comparison to Carlo Del Monte who appeared to be further away than ususl in this duet. #6..."Flower Duet" from Lakme'. The harmoney between these two women blended just right. Neither tried to overpower the other. #7..."O mio babbino caro" again with Victoria De Los Angeles. She hit the high notes with grace and it was conforting not to hear screeming on high notes. #8..."Questa o quella" from Rigoletto was very clear and vibrantly sung by Giuseppe Di Stefano. #9..."Nessun dorma" from Turnadot was sung with the great voice of Jose Carreras. It went along beautifully and then seemed to just end. #10...Una voce poco fa" from The Barber Of Seville sung by the great Maria Callas her voice was vibrant although at times the music overpowered her. #11..."Un bel di" from Madam Butterfly. Renata Scotto sang even the high notes delicate, yet powerful with the tragic taking place in the song and music. I felt as if I wanted to cry with her, it was so well done. #12..."Mon couer s'ouvre a ta voix" from Sampson and Dalila is sweeping and flowing like taking a journey through time and space with great tenderness of the blending of their voices, but it just ended without waraning. #13..."O soave fanciulla" from La Boheme. La Boheme the first Opera I ever purchased at 16 years old with money from my first job. Of coarse I liked this one. #14..."Ebben? Ne andro lontana" from La Wally is very moveing with Ghena Dimitrova singing in a clear voice. My first time hearing her and a pleasure. The CD ended here, like the end of a perfect day.

All of Betty's fans should buy this!.......2005-09-16
Betty Grable was one of the most popular actresses of the 1940s and unlike many other stars she could really sing! This is a terrific collection of her songs. Many of them are live performances you won't find anywhere else. A couple of highlights are Betty's sweet version of Cuddle Up A Little Closer and a duet with Dick Powell. I play this CD all the time. If you're a fan of Betty you need to get this one!
Betty Grable Sings 13 out of 14 songs!!.......2004-05-30
Most Betty Grable fans will know that she and Alice Faye were prevented from recording commercially by the conditions in their respective contracts at Twentieth Century Fox Studios. Collector's Choice has compiled and released a collection of Grable vocals mostly taken from radio appearances from the 1940s with "What Did I Do?" seeming to be from an appearance on Bing Crosby's radio show in the early 1950s. There are also several soundtrack items and here is where the compilers make a serious error. Betty Grable did sing "You Do" in the film "Mother Wore Tights" BUT the version here is the track used in the scene in which Mona Freeman sings "You Do". Other than that, this is a very welcome and valuable release. The radio tracks attest to the the fact that Grable sang as well on radio as she did in films and no enhancing of her vocals was ever done. It is a pleasure to listen to her sing songs that she introduced as well as songs introduced by Alice Faye and Ginger Rogers. Grable fans would do well to invest in this one!

Great Cabaret Salute!.......2004-04-25
Great songs by a great vocalist and and arranger. This CD epitomizes what live cabaret if all about!
A GREAT CABARET SALUTE!.......2004-04-25
Disregard reviewer from GA (who gave this CD a 1 star). Probably doesn't get out much. KT Sullivan's LADIES OF THE SILVER SCREEN is the epitome of what live cabaret music is all about...great selections of songs sung with style and wit and wonderful arrangements by the brilliant pianist, James Followell. KT Sullivan knows how to communicate with an audience and does a great tribute to the silver screen stars!
Worst CD I own.......2002-12-29
KT Sullivan has the worst disc I own. Her voice is not what it was and the material is so "cute" that I could not listen to the entire disc. I tried and tried but it was unbelievable and I finally had to stop. Anyone who wants it is more than welcome to my copy. Its that bad!!
