Thanks Dad!.......2001-08-22
My father has played Accordian since he was a very small child. He played in a polka band when he became old enough to play in bars. After hours he would go down town and sit in with the local jazz musicians. My father always had some vinyl of some great player on the turn table most every night while i was growing up. Monk, Diz, Bird, Miles and Art. It may seem funny sounding to you, But Art Van Damme is the king of his instrument and just as great an artist. He could play great ballads like Miles. Dizzying hot upbeat tunes like Bird or foot taping latin beats like Dizzy. I personally am greatful I had a chance to know who he was and am Very glad his work is coming out on CD.
"The hippest cat ever to swing an accordian".......2001-01-20
Wow! For those for whom the accordian primarily conjures up thoughts of Weird Al or polka music, take one listen to the man the folks at Space Age Pop Music call "the hippest cat ever to swing an accordian" and you'll never think of the accordian in the same way again. I can only echo the words of reviewer Fred C. Dorn (regarding another Art Van Damme CD, "Once Over Lightly/Manhattan Time"): "Art Van Damme is to the accordian as Dave Brubeck is to the piano." This is one swingin' CD!

Not a dud record from Ernestine and George.......2004-01-04
I always loved pianist George Shearing's impressionistic pianism that is both distinctive and possesses the best qualities of Ahmad Jamal and fellow Brit Marian McPartland. So it was a surprise knowing that he did a duet album (almost a duet, the other members of the rhythm section offer discreet support) with Seattle-based Ernestine Anderson. Now, I love Ernestine Anderson ever since she decided to come back to the jazz recording scene in 1977. She just released very fine vocal jazz albums in the Concord catalog year after year. And her voice may not be versatile, but the wonders she can do with the limited range. She is unpretentious when she sings the Jule Styne "The Things We Did Last Summer" that touches you in invisible ways. She can still sing "Body and Soul" without invoking other torch singers who did that song before her. As usual, her sense of swing is in sync with Shearing. This album is consistently good that its hard to recommend this album in particular without urging others to explore her back catalogs which show a consistent and fine musicianship from her band and from a voice so direct and unadorned, it speaks from a depth of experience and love for the music.
Essential Ernestine..........2000-06-30
Ernestine Anderson is as swingin' as ever on these remarkable duets with George Shearing at the piano. Highlights include "I Won't Dance", "The Best Thing For You", "I'll Take Romance", and the gorgeous ballad "Body & Soul." All of the performances on this spectacular session are great.

an absolute knockout!!.......2007-04-05
I guess it doesn't matter how old Ella and Duke were at this recording.. If you close your eyes when listening to this CD you'd swear this was the fabulous fifties.... They are both at the best of their game at the time.... I've listened to this CD so much it's probably worn out!!@
Don't hesitate to get this one.... it's fabulous......
Two Perfect Swingers!.......2004-07-14
Please, don't let the cover picture fool you about this album--Ella is full of life on this album and enjoying every moment of her singing. Her voice is not as pure as it was in her golden years, but she demonstrates excellent control of her abilities to put a more soulful, emotional and powerful "bump" on her songs. This is the perfect voice for the blues songs she sings, which are backed by the infallible Count Basie and his orchestra. Ella and the orchestra have fun trading battles, and this album (a recording of a Swiss concert) is full of life, swing, heart, and that big band pomp. Just please--don't get scared away by her apparent age on the cover and my previous words that could betray me in the eyes of the previewer--this is an unbelievable album and you will definitely play this over and over. Ella chose music to suit her changing voice perfectly, and her new takes on songs like "Sweet Georgia Brown" will fulfill your swinging needs! Enjoy!
Great Swinging Ella & Basie.......2000-03-23
Is this Ella's best album? No, but it's still very good. What does it have going for it? Good old standards along with a couple of new songs, Basie's tight and muscular big band, and Ella singing and swinging her way through it in style. This was recorded in 1979, so Ella's voice is not quite as supple as it was in her prime. But as long as she and Basie can swing, everything's ok. In fact, I love this CD!

Customer Reviews:
Deserves Listening To!.......2003-01-22
This is one of three cds completed by this duet.......duet not really descriptive enough of the very contemporary sounds that result. Eddie Monteiro plays a MIDI Controller Cavichord accordian that provides a wide variety of sounds (not your "Lady Of Spain" type of thing!). Coupled with the very appealing vocals of Nancy Marano with backing vocals of Eddie, the results are astounding! The duo also does some relaxed but superb scatting as well.
Jobim, Alan and Marilyn Bergman, and Johnny Mandel compositions are included as well as several standards such as "Autumn Nocturne", "Skylark", "That's All" and "A Sleepin' Bee". Flugelhornist Claudio Roditi appears on "Love Dance" while pianist Roger Kellaway and baritone saxist Gerry Mulligan are heard on individual tracks of their own compositions.
This is really a very appealing album that will become a favorite within your collection.
a happy madness.......2002-03-23
i was just browsing to see if this duo has any other stuff out there. this is one of those rare cds which i'd buy anything new and am so glad to see there are more out there!...they swing, scat, ballad and bossa nova with the best of them. i love art van damme but eddie can jam w/the best of them. he has flying fingers and the quickest mouth that can keep up w/ella any day. what a pallate of musical sounds he can emote from this accordion...this is NOT your dad's polka that you remember. this guy is a virtuoso. a better singer you can't ask for from nancy. together a perfect pair. their cohesiveness in all they do belie many years of working together. great song selections too! lyrical & musical. wow, a smoker. enjoy this little known duo...wish there were 6 stars

Album Description
Danielle Westphal's new CD, "High Standards," which was officially released June 3, 2002, to a sold-out audience at Blues Alley, in Washington, D.C., has been collecting some great reviews. The recording, produced, arranged, and mixed by Dan Reynolds, is a wonderful collection of 17 standards that range from toe-tapping big band favorites to smooth bossa beats, rounded out by beautiful ballads -- including two sung in French. Mike Joyce of The Washington Post says, Danielle "brings an innocent zest" to the CDs tunes and Dave Nathan of All Music Guide, says, "her diction is perfect
and keen sense of timing
adds freshness" to this "scintillating maiden album." Dan Reynolds' piano accompaniment, Peter Revell's acoustic bass and Mike DeLisa's drums add the perfect jazz momentum to this collection of standards from the Great American Songbook.

Awesome Song.......2004-06-04
I Promised myself is my favorite song, ive always liked the ateens but after hearing this song, i had to go out and get thier other cd's, its so great, i really hope this isnt thier last together, ive loved em since i was a kid but got out of the whole pop thing as i got odler but its sooo good.
WOW.......2004-01-23
O my gosh! My favorite A*Teens song will always be Halfway Around the World, but this song is totally amazing!! There is not one thing about this song that i don't like.
1. A Perfect Match (Radio Edit)- I also have the origional version of this from New Arrival, and I must say, they made some GREAT improvements.
2. A Perfect Match (Extended Version)- Extending it only made it even better! O my gosh!
3. A Perfect Match- (Tranceglobal Club Mix)- Words cannot even express how totally unbelievable this remix sounds. My mouth was hanging open the first time I heard it!!!!!!!!!!!!
4. Singled Out- I like the song, they probly could have picked a better song to end the up beat cd with...
BUY IT NOW! You will NOT regret it!
The Perfect Match to adde to your music collection.......2003-08-19
OK, you got Pop Til You Drop and New Arrival. Why in the world would you pick up this single? Because this single contains a different version of "Perfect Match", the video/radio version. The song sounds much more alive and energetic than the album version. And no, the "Radio Version" is not a dance remix, just an updated, improved version of the song.
Watch the "Perfect Match" video at A-teens.com then decide if this single is worth buying.
~Perfect~.......2003-06-05
"A Perfect Match" is the first single released off of New Arrival (which is the Euro version of Pop Til' You Drop). The Single/Video version is diff. from the album version, and it is really awesome! The song still flows the same, and all the parts are in the same spots. There is just more to the song now, more background music, more sound effects and what not, and it is really great! I really love this song, and the video to it is just plain GREAT!
This single is worth importing, and you'll fall in love with the song!
I believe this single is the Maxi Single, and contains:
1. A Perfect Match (Radio/Video Version)
2. A Perfect Match (Extended Version)
3. A Perfect Match (TranceGlobal Club Mix)
4. Singled Out [From Pop 'Til You Drop]
