MTV Compilation: 20 Years of Pop Music

MTV's compilation, 20 Years of Pop Music, attempts to cover the major stars and subgenres of MTV's history--a task much more suited to a three-disc box set than one 15-track disc. The disc's greatest weakness is four oddly selected tracks from the 1980s. Of all of Madonna's contributions to the early '80s pop scene, they pick "Borderline" over "Lucky Star" or "Burning Up for Your Love." The Beastie Boys' cut, "No Sleep Till Brooklyn," is strong, but not as well-known as "You Gotta Fight (For Your Right to Party)." The Whitney Houston and Red Hot Chili Peppers tracks are not the songs you were hoping for, and how could you celebrate '80s pop without Michael Jackson or Prince? But the 1990s are well covered, with a few unexpected gems thrown in: When was the last time you heard En Vogue's "Free Your Mind" or Weezer's "Buddy Holly"? All in all, this is a good disc for a road trip or a low-key cocktail party, but if you're looking for a real blast from the past, look elsewhere. --Courtney Kemp

1 out of 5 stars One star is GENEROUS.......2001-11-22

How to describe what's wrong with this cd. In a word, everything. Although MTV took on the uneviable task of trying to jam 20 years' worth of pop onto a 15 track cd, and on sheer song value they do an okay job, it's just not what I expected. Leaving out key artists, which have been mentioned in other reviews, essentially forgetting about 80s music (I know the fashion was bad, but I have some great childhood memories of the songs), and playing up too much to certain genres (what ever happened to the rock performers of the early to mid-80s??) ruined all chance of me actually buying this "compilation" after listening to a friend's copy for two weeks (hey, I gave it more than one spin, okay?). I guess it just goes to show how far MTV is falling from the station that once played videos 24/7 and revolutionized the music world, to something that panders only to specific groups at certain times and has the attention span of gnat.

Maybe a better idea would have been to release a cd of the performances from the 20th anniversary special that aired on TV-I would have appreciated it, and bought it, since it did have such a great diversity of acts. At least then I would have Billy Idol's fantastic performance of "Rebel Yell" with Steve Stevens, one of the songs that defined pop/rock/new wave music in the early 80s and got great play. (This, in my opinion, was the best performance of the night--the 40 year old showed the kiddies how to truly *rock* the house).

This is supposed to represent 20 years of Pop music?? Almost all of these are from the past decade. The CD is full of TRL junk, not traditional pop! Typical of MTV to cater to their 13 year old audience and only include recent stuff. Where's all the 80's stuff that really made MTV popular to begin with? MTV has done a disservice to all the artists who came before Christina who actually have talent besides having a prtty face! Of course since MTV now plays videos about a whole 2 hours a day and fills the rest of their programming with terrible shows (like the Really Fake World), the whole thing seems rather pointless anyway.

1 out of 5 stars god help mtv.......2001-08-05

i thought 20 years of mtv would inculde such artists as prince, nirvana, pearl jam, guns and roses, cyndi lauper, but instead i got fluff, full of very forgetable songs, these artists isn't what mtv was built on, its what mtv's down fall lies in.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Idea, but could be better.......2001-07-28

The music on this CD is fine. No problems there. The only drawback that keeps it from being 5 stars is that with 20 years to cover, they should have put 20 songs on it! In an Era where the "Now" series can put out 19-track retrospectives of the last few months, would it have been too much to ask for 5 more songs? My additions: "Better Days" Citizen King, "Smile", Vitamin C, "Sunglasses at Night" Corey Hart, "Rain or Shine" Five Star, and to be obscure, "Youre a Zombie" Artist unknown, but big during the MTV glory year of 83-84. Maybe a volume 2 in the future?

2 out of 5 stars This CD is messed up..........2001-07-21

This album isn't even pop, it has a few songs like "Waterfalls", "I Wanna Dance With Somebody", "That's The Way Love Goes", "Borderline", "No Sleep Till Brooklyn", "I Want It That Way", "Genie In A Bottle" but the rest is just a joke, they arn't even popular songs. Who ever picked this track listin need a bop in the head.
