A Chorus Line may be better known, but Dreamgirls was a towering achievement for director Michael Bennett. Loosely based on the Supremes' story, the 1982 musical told a typical show-biz tale of fame, backbiting, and survival. As is often the case for one-night only events, the cast in this concert version (recorded in New York on September 24, 2001) is led by an eye-popping assortment of Broadway powerhouses: Lillias White (The Life), Audra McDonald (Ragtime, Marie Christine), and Heather Headley (Ragtime). McDonald reveals a previously undisclosed comic streak, while Headley confirms her status as a rising star. Reprising the role of Effie Melody White (created by Jennifer Holliday), White belts the classic "And I Am Telling You I'm Not Going." But the beauty of Dreamgirls is that it's so packed with catchy, Motown-influenced R&B numbers that each lead can sink her teeth into some prime material and get a turn in the spotlight. This double-CD set really makes you wish you'd been there when the show was recorded: you can hear the crowd going berserk at times, and the temptation is strong to do the same thing in the comfort of your living room. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

1 out of 5 stars Dreamgirls 2001.......2007-06-27

This was the worst reproduction of Dreamgirls that I ever heard. I was so disappointed the CD went into the garbage. This is one CD that I would not sell to the public because I expect so much and get so little.

4 out of 5 stars Not the real "DREAM" experience.......2007-04-04

Forget about the film sountrack. Get this CD set. And it's far better than the original cast recording which goes lacking. More songs and more everything that makes a live performance just what it is. Live (compared to film where anything can be done to enhance a performance!) -- the energy, the excitement and the performances make this a rare treat for anyone wanting to share in the real DREAM experience.

Isn't a full Broadway revival long over due. But wait: I've heard rumors that a rvial may be "in the works. I certainly hope so. Maybe this time it will receive the Tony award it deserved in the first place.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely brilliant!.......2007-01-28

There is atleast 5 new songs on this album that were not in the movie! These girls kill it I mean they are just amazing singers, and this all live! This is needed for any Dreamgirls fanatic like me! You are gonna love it! Enjoy! love live laugh :)

5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!!!!!.......2006-12-04

As a theatre lover, this recording is amazing. I actually prefer this recording to the OBC. Sheryl Lee Ralph is okay, but can't touch Audra's Deena. The first time I heard Ms. White's "And I Am Telling You..", goosbumps all over my body. The only weak cast member in my opinon is Heather Headly. Vocally, she just isn't there. Too much Aida, not enough Dreamgirls. But all in all, a great live recording of a great show.

5 out of 5 stars One Night Only .......2006-07-19

I was lucky enough to attend this One Night Only concert performance of Dreamgirls and it was a night I will never forget!! The cast was brilliant and the cd is as good if not better than the Broadway cast recording because it is the entire show not just the songs. Bravo to everyone involved !!!

3 out of 5 stars could've been better with more jam and lewis songs.......2006-07-21

I will start by saying that ralph took a bold move on this cd and to this day why wasn't jam and lewis more involved on this lp. I understand ralph wanted to do more producing and writing but at the end of the day it's all about record sales and just think if jam and lewis had been in complete control of this album ralph might not had come back to new edition. The chemistry that they have together is magical and on this album you can tell what jam and lewis did and what they didn't do. Now that being said ralph is not r. kelly or anything but there are a few tracks on this album that he did a pretty good job on and those tracks are (graveyard),(shaky ground),and (your touch)now these tracks should've been added to an all jam and lewis project and the rest of those tracks were not worth throwing out there to the public. But lucky for new edition that ralph busted on this effort and he needed his boys again and this album was only an experiment that just didn't work.

5 out of 5 stars True Artist is RT aka "The Rizzo".......2004-08-31

First...Ralph became the most respectable "true" member of NE.
With that said, "Its Goin' Down" is a solid piece of early-mid 90's R&B. RT writes, and produces most of what makes up the albums best parts. His words are nothing special, but when you hear it, you'll know its from his heart & soul.

"Its goin' Down" is much harder than "Ralph Tresvant" his first album...so if you enjoy RT's sound/delivery, you'll love this one. "Its Goin' Down" also has a West Coast feel to the production. Which most of the album was recorded in SF/Bay area. Check out "Rizzo the Mack" on his 2nd and last solo effort;)

3 out of 5 stars A solid, underrated effort for this boy band alumnus.........2004-08-09

Ralph Tresvant already had the benefit of being the frontman for New Edition, but strangely, it didn't seem to help to propel him into solo stardom the same way.. his first solo LP went platinum, but crossover attention was minimal.. there was even less Urban Airplay by the time this 2nd LP came around.. SOUNDSCAN was inaugurated, which gave albums less chart time, to be sure.. the production is mostly handled by TRESVANT himself, and he is surprisingly able.. abetted on a few cuts by Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis.. One wonders what could have been achieved with a complete Jam/Lewis project.. But by then, a new generation of R&B stylists, influenced as much by rap as classic soul, came to prominence: Aaron Hall (from the now defunct Guy), Jodeci, Boyz II Men, R. Kelly, and a host of early 90's clones that soon disappeared (Intro, Lo-Key?, UNV, Shai...); hence, the market was quite glutted.. MCA didn't seem to promote this LP too much, as it arrived in stores with little fanfare.. and during Christmastime, to boot.. I'm not sure if he toured, but if he did, it apparently didn't boost sales too much beyond Gold status, where it stalled.. on a more cynical level, could the name "Tresvant" be too left-field for pop audiences and jaded radio programmers to catch on to? Getting a stage name or relying just on "Ralph" would have been silly, though..

The bad thing is, Tresvant has never been known for the misadventures and legal problems of his bandmate Bobby Brown.. but he never achieved the solo fame that Brown had for a brief time in the late 80's..
At least New Edition is planning a reunion album (without Brown) for 2004, co-produced by Sean "P-Diddy" Combs...

1 out of 5 stars A waste of time and money..........2004-04-27

I anxiously awaited Ralph's sophmore album and rushed out to by "It's Goin' Down" the day it was released. What a waste of time it was. Considering that there was a three year period between this album and his first, I expected more instead of this haphazard mess. The songs were poorly produced and lacking in lyrical content. The best part of this album is when it's finished playing. I can't say enough how disappointed I was. "It's Goin' Down" is definitely not Ralph at his best.

4 out of 5 stars Very bold effort.......2004-01-27

Ralph took up most of the work as far as productiona and writing on this lp. Gotta respect that, would have preferred more songs written and produced by established producers and writers but gotta give Ralph respect for coming out the way he did after all the critical acclaim of his debut. A true leader. Now Who's the Mack!

5 out of 5 stars Melanie is the best!!!.......2003-12-27

I don't know why I took so long to buy this single or any of Melanie's other singles.I think Melanie is the best artist out there, I've loved her and her music since her spice girl days. This album is great.I really love "Angel on my Shoulder," its a nice touching song.I would also recommend buying the Goin' Down CD 2(if you don't already have it) because "I Want You Back" is the greatest song ever. It's my fave and if you haven't heard it, you should.

5 out of 5 stars You gotta have it!.......2002-03-20

This Single Rocks!!! Melanie C has always been my favorite Spice girl I just love her voice and her lyrics are just amazing!
1. Goin' down--This is one of my favorite songs of all time! It embodies the pure wrath and frustration of a break up. With a beat strong enough to knock the walls down. This is the radio version and the difference is in the vocals, she sounds like she's singing it normally instead of the album version where she sounds like she's on a mega-phone.
2. Ga Ga--same great album version. I love this song. Its another great relationship disaster song.
3. Angel on my shoulder--Very Mellow and light hearted as far as the beat is concerned. The lyrics are very sweet and smart. Now that I think of it-This song is not too far off from 'feel the sun' yet not as deep.

5 out of 5 stars The great outcome of anger...........2001-11-27

Unlike some people I think Melanie C's "Goin Down" is an awesome song.I never thought I would hear a Spice Girl sing music like this ever. This is an awesome song. The lyrics are simply brilliant. The other songs on here are "Ga Ga" and the b-side "Angel On My Shoulder"."Ga Ga" can also be found on Mel's wonderful debut CD."Ga Ga" is yet another well written song and is very catchy and not as angry as "Goin Down"."Angel On My Shoulder" is the singles b-side.I bought this import for this song.It is such a beautiful and sweet song.I don't understand why this one wasn't on the album. This single is so awesome.Everyone who likes Mel's debut album should definatly own this.

5 out of 5 stars Where Did This Come From.......2001-02-02

Melanie C in my opinion has always had the best voice out of the spice girls and going it alone was always going to be a wise decision, as too is the choice to release a track like this. Going down is the only track like this on her album and its a shame. Mel C has shown that she can cover a whole range of different types of songs and be good at them all. Well done Melanie!!

2 out of 5 stars Goin' Down To The Dump!.......2000-06-28

When you think of Spice Girls, you think of light and bouncy teeny-boppers. You don't think of a punk rocker cursing in her music. Goin' Down is a punk song (or noise if you'd like) that basically describes her and getting her revenge. Ga Ga, well just look at the title, it sounds dumb, it is dumb. It's a very skill-less song. Angel On My Shoulder on the other hand, is a light SPICE GIRLS like ballad. The melodic beat consists of two sounds...and they're on off beats. There is an interlude chorus, it's kinda like a Nintendo like noise when you would win that first level of Mega Man, it then turns into a ballad again, kind of sounds like I Turn To You, off of her solo debut album. The song basically describes a hard time in Melanie's life, where she looked to an angel, but she never found the angel. She knew though, the angel wasn't far from her shoulder, and knew it was always with her everyday. I don't suggest this Single, however, if you collect the ever-popular B-sides, I suggest this song. *I AM A Melanie C. FAN*

A whole disc of choral arrangements of folk tunes could be too much--except in this case, the choir is the excellent Cambridge Singers, and the well-chosen arrangements cover a variety of composers and styles. Among the arrangers are Rutter, Vaughan Williams, and Daryl Runswick; the repertoire includes a hauntingly gorgeous "She moved through the fair" and 23 other selections. --David Vernier

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Typical of Cambridge Singers--A good thing.......2005-06-14

This is very typical of John Rutter and the Cambridge Singers. Superbly performed, meaning not too forceful or too delicate. Diction and tone excellent. The folk song is not necessairly as entertaining or enjoyable as some of their other repertoire, nor is it as meaningful, but it still a powerful listening experience. The money for this recording will be well spent. The arrangements, well chosen, showcase beautiful, evocative choral singing. Vaughan Williams' arrangements are best, and he is well known for his arrangements of folk songs. Rutter's are good, but his harmonies are too often predictable or saccharine.

Best are: Dashing away with the smoothing iron (5), The Dark Eyed Sailor (10), The Girl I Left Behind Me (12), Just as the tide was flowing (13), O waly, waly (15)

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully Lyrical Folk Melodies a la Rutter.......2000-09-28

This is a collection of Irish, Scottish, and English folk songs beautifully caressed by The Cambridge Singers under the masterful direction of John Rutter. He seems to possess an uncanny ability to create a uniquely lush and lyrical sound with a choir.

In listening to these songs, I find that they have the capacity to simultaneously evoke feelings of melancholy and joy, and, ultimately leave me to conclude that I have been visited by sheer beauty.

5 out of 5 stars The Lark touches my own heart!.......2000-04-27

In this review I am going to be exceptionally candid! This CD is a wonderfully arranged and performed set of traditional songs that will be treasured by any lover of this delicate yet vigorous music. I was a child of post war England in a poor suburb of South East England and our music teacher used to make us sing these songs which came from The National Song Book and from the folk song collectors, notably Vaughan Williams who put so much of this national flavor into his two collections, 'The English Hymnal' and 'Songs of Praise'. Before our generation the BBC had set up a radio programme called 'Listen with Mother' which we followed the established tradition of listening to them in those years of austerity (its funny you know, but we did not seem to get bored like they do today) on November evenings when the pea souper fogs swirled around the blue mercury lamps as the coal glowed orange in the grate. This music transported us to May mornings, harvesting, landscapes peopled with grenadiers, young love sick swains tip toeing in forbidden rooms at night etc. from these bleak afternoons and gave us the promise of the return of the season when we will be able to walk the Downs under blue skies once more. They also made us think that we were part of a continuum of being young, loving, having children and growing old and dying on this misty offshore island as hundred of generations had done before us. This self-consciousness of these characteristics that made us English and in their understated passion they revealed to us the promises of adulthood together with its victories, disillusionments and inevitable tragedies. Alas, the powers that dictate the conventional wisdom today have consigned these songs to the trash basket of history in the name of multiculturalism and globalism. The songs are not sung today as they appear too ethnocentric in a pluralistic society for our contemporary captains of society. This is a shame for those of us with no real English blood could still participate and enjoy these lovely songs that summon up the freshness of a spring morning or the pangs of a spurned lover in a few lines of beautifully stated verse. These are universal feelings that just happened to be in an English setting, which was where we were! The arrangements here are sublime, particularly 'She moved through the Fair' which always moves me to tears. The subject 'What are the English?' is a current topic for the UK is still settling down after Devolution and finding its own identity. They could do worse than playing 'The Lark in the Clear Air' to answer this question tout court. Please buy, but be warned: this stuff can be dangerously upsetting in its waves of nostalgia. It is like meeting a long lost (and forgotten) friend. That is an (almost lost) part of yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Rolicking English folk music.......1999-06-13

Beautifully sung under Rutter's usual masterful directions. Dashing Away with the Smoothing Iron and the Dark Eyed Sailor were my favorites.

    5 out of 5 stars Great Song!.......2007-07-24

Good music, good melody, and a nice sound for a modern rock track. It's catchy and hard to get out of your head at times, and I mean that in a good way. Five stars for a fantastic song!

1 out of 5 stars Sugar we're going down anththeehe..........2006-07-25

That's what I hear. Fall-Out Boy is stupid and incredibly overhyped. The lead singer sounds like a drowning cat.

I say, skip this and buy a CD by an artist with talent (and no, I don't mean Ashlee Simpson).

    4 out of 5 stars wow.......2006-03-02

its amazing, you probably haven't bought the album, or single, and you're going to criticize it because of its listing as punk rock. fall out boy is a great band, and has always put energy and made their shows fun, and are devoted to their fans. the album from under the cork tree is a great album, and the song sugar, although overplayed, is an awesome song. It's so disappointing when people have to put labels on music and say its bad and it has to be a certain way to gain that title.
