Add Smokey Robinson to the list of sophisticated crooners sidestepping the race to rack up songwriter credits in favor of revisiting standards. Don't add him to the list of well-loved pop statesmen willing to let a team of backing musicians do the heavy lifting, though. With Timeless Love, Smokey situates himself in a candle-lit lounge of the mind: these may be other artists' songs, but he sketches in the details with the very stuff of his soul. Which, as anybody who's ever sung along to "The Tracks of My Tears" knows, is leagues more potent than most. Heart-stabbingly so. In Frank Sinatra's quite capable hands, for example, "Fly Me to the Moon" is a bawdy, puff-chested romp; in Smokey's it's a tender celebration of blinding love (ditto for "I've Got You Under My Skin"). Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time," meanwhile, becomes less brooding and more pleading as he ups the romantic balladeer quotient--there's something in the twists and turns of that gorgeous, trembling tenor. While Smokey, at 67, is still able to run vocal circles around many of the artists more closely associated with these numbers, it's with his own song, "I Love Your Face," that he threatens to do the most damage to the already weak-kneed. Couples in black tie might have been swirling around him as he recorded this disc: dim the lights and sway accordingly. --Tammy La Gorce

5 out of 5 stars Sets it's own standard..........2007-06-11

This does not play well as background music. You simply want to stop and listen to every note.

I have other versions of these classics, including recordings by Sinatra and Torme as well as others, and I appreciate their ability to evoke specific feelings of time and place with their versions of these durable standards. Smokey's own interpretations are personal, intimate and romantic. You can tell that he wants to sing these songs, that they have somehow touched him deeply and he wants to tell their stories in his own voice. His versions have the ability to fire your imagination with romantic notions.

I was initially reluctant to purchase this recording based on other reviews, but find that now that I have, I reach for it again and again.

Smokey's version of the classics really doesn't need comparison to anyone else's interpretations of these timeless jewels, his is unique and beautiful in its own right.

2 out of 5 stars Not even a good attempt........2007-04-11

When will artist realize you can't change the old classics. The only successfull R&B group to sing the classic "Night and day" to their own beat was the Temptations CD "What women want" the best rendition I have ever heard. Smokey does have the voice for these kinds of songs. Another good CD with classics is Willie Nelson's Stardust.

3 out of 5 stars Smokey is Timeless yet misplaced.......2007-04-01

Smokey's voice is exquisitely, melodiously, beautiful, but I did not enjoy listening to him sing songs I associate with other artists especially Frank Sinatra. I now know I only enjoy Smokey singing his signature songs from my past, just like he did in the 2006 concert of his that I attended. Had I listened to any of the cuts before purchasing the CD, I would not have purchased it.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Just Keeps Getting Better!.......2007-03-18

I've been a Smokey fan for most of my life and I truly appreciate the genius of both the man and his music. I expected this CD to be good because over the years, I have learned to expect nothing less from him. However, the word "good" doesn't even come close to describing the experience of listening to this music. It's an incredible compilation of songs to which he lends his special touch and the result is truly amazing. I have often thought after listening to one of his songs that he can't possibly get any better, but Smokey continues to deliver music that touches the heart, the mind and the spirit in a way that others can only aspire to achieve.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.......2007-01-10

Smokey sings the standards with a pleasant and slight difference. All the cuts are so very good, the very best being "I Love Your Face".

5 out of 5 stars Andy Griffith---not just Sheriff Taylor and Matlock.......2007-01-10

All of the hymns Andy sings are older hymns which my mother enjoys. He has a great voice, and he sings selections suited to his voice.

5 out of 5 stars If feelings and belief can be carried on music, this is it........2004-02-11

In his golden years, Andy Griffith has bestowed a tremendous gift upon us in his "I Love To Tell The Story" collection. I've heard critics complain that he does not offer the slick polish of a young man's voice, but I wouldn't trade the sincere feeling and heart-touching depth Andy Griffith can put across for anything. There's a lifetime of warmth that resonates through his voice in these beautiful old songs. Creating such meaning with voice comes from time spent living. Listening makes me wish I'd grown up in his part of the south. This is my second of Andy's CD's, the first was The Christmas Guest (truly superb - a must have). I Love To Tell The Story arrived only a few days ago but has already logged many hours playing. If I had to choose favorites on this cd, (two of them tied for absolute favorite) they would be (1A) Precious Memories: gentle sweet and peaceful (1B) Sweet Prospect: both tenderly reverent and compelling; makes an excellent showcase for the gentle power of Andy's classical trained voice. (2) Softly and Tenderly: lovely, heartfelt and moving (3) How Great Thou Art: like listening to his sincere private conversation with his maker (4) Amazing Grace: stirring rendition. All together it is a beautiful collection, well executed, classically. This is not flash, this is substance. This will be in my collection always, played often.

5 out of 5 stars Author of The Dead Angel loves to sing along with Andy........2003-12-23

As a member of a musical family (even my detective in TDA sings) that still gathers at the piano to sing many favorite songs, including the good ol' hymns of yesteryear, I love Andy's CDs. When I need a lift, I pop one into the CD player...car or home...and sing away. They're great to use for family get-togethers when there's no piano handy. Andy's background musicians are also superb. I cherish Andy's CDs that I own. Keep singin' and recordin', Andy! We can feel your sincerity in each number.

5 out of 5 stars Sing them over again to me.......2003-10-08

Hymn-singing doesn't get much better than this. Andy Griffith, who has entertained audiences for decades, proves once more to be an engaging, thoroughly enjoyable performer.

The arrangements give vocal and instrumental support but never overpower Griffith's honest and straight-forward delivery or detract from the simplicity of these traditional tunes.

Actually, I was amazed at how good Griffith sounded. This is not a young man. Yet, his voice sounds remarkably fresh. His rhythm and pitch are exemplary and his vibrato and general tone are amazingly smooth and even throughout his range. Even more important, he delivers the text clearly.

The hymn choices and combinations are excellent. All are standards and should be familiar to anyone who grew up in a Southern church. I was particularly tickled with the combination of "Sweet Hour of Prayer" and "What a Friend we have in Jesus" -- the first two hymns I ever learned to play. From the vigorous "Shall We Gather at the River/Will the Circle be Unbroken" combination to the reflective "Wayfaring Stranger" this is a tour de force from a great performer.

If you like the inspiration of hymns, this is one for you. (And if you like this, you will also probably like Griffith's Christmas album "Christmas Guest" -- available September 2003.)

5 out of 5 stars I can't recommend it enough!.......2003-09-15

In this wonderful CD, acting legend and singer Andy Griffith (b.1926) sings a selection of the hymns that have inspired him throughout his life. Few know that Mr. Griffith's first career choice had been to be an opera singer, and that he graduated from the University of North Carolina with a degree in music. Deeply religious, he had originally enrolled as a pre-divinity student, and though he switched over to drama, he never completely lost that first love.

This CD contains twenty-five classic Christian hymns, sung in Mr. Griffith's distinctive voice. Shall We Gather at the River flows into Will the Circle Be Unbroken, as he takes us along down memory lane to the great hymns of yesterday. I found this to be a great CD, one that gets better with each listening. (My favorite song is Wayfaring Stranger, which Mr. Griffith makes a very moving song to listen to.) It is a great CD to relax to, and just be carried off. I can't recommend it enough!

"Amazing", "Exquisite", "Gorgeous", and "Very Highly Recommended" are some of the words used by New Age diva Kathy Parsons in her review of Michael Dulin's piano and keyboard CD, "Timeless", on the Equity Digital label. Following two previous chart-topping solo releases of original tunes, with "Timeless" pianist/composer Dulin turns his attention to reinventing the classics - 11 of your favorite classic melodies, to be exact, transformed by Dulin into what will surely become your favorite "New Age" classics. This CD is vintage Dulin, with lots of original touches, and that polished and sensual sound that has made his music so popular. "Timeless" is a must-have for fans of New Age, Contemporary Instrumental, OR classical music.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Classic!!.......2004-11-11

Michael Dulin brings New Age genre to its Classical roots with his 2004 release, "Timeless". Dulin provides us with a wonderful selection of tracks written by some of the greatest composers of all time. Listeners not familiar with the Classical geniuses of the 18th and 19th Century will be surprised with some of the compositions that we hear everyday in use with TV commercials and movies. Composers such as Debussy (Clair de Lune), Beethoven (The Emperor's Adagio), Bach (Prelude) and many others. My personal favorite is Simply Satie by French composer Erik Satie. (I've always wondered who composed this music because I heard the group, Blood, Sweat & Tears and Saxophonist Gato Barbieri perform this same melody on their albums.) Once again, as he did with previous CD reviewed by us, Dulin showcases his great talents as an arranger and pianist. His strong aesthetic attention to detail in the production is a testament to this outstanding recording. I recommend this CD to anyone who would like to rediscover the Classics.

5 out of 5 stars Great early album.......2003-08-10

The style of this album varies between traditional country and bluegrass, with steel guitar, electric guitar, drums and piano augmenting the standard bluegrass instruments. This sounds like a lot of instruments but they aren't all used throughout the album. Rhonda played the mandolin and fiddle as well as singing, so was very busy when recording this album.

Most of the songs are covers but none of the songs are especially well known. Reba McEntire's fan will recognize I'm not that lonely yet, while Keith Whitley had previously recorded Birmingham turnaround. I do my crying at night is a Lefty Frizzell oldie, while the title track was originally recorded by the McCarters, a brilliant but almost forgotten trio of sisters, on their album The gift.

This is yet another classic from Rhonda, though not her absolute best.

5 out of 5 stars Rhonda Vincent in her natural grace.......2003-08-08

Rhonda's starting to finally get the recognition she's been deserving. After an earnest effort in her thirties to make music fit for airplay, she's come back strong to the mountain music her family raised her to play. But long before the atomic drum tracks and the duets with Randy Travis, Rhonda produced four acoustic albums for Rebel, each one a balanced, unselfconscious gem of country and hillbilly song, each one WAY too country for New Country. There's nothing arty or clever about any of the four CDs, which, for pure country satisfaction, puts it ahead of the work of such serious artists as Gillian Welch or Laurie Lewis. I had the honor and pleasure of meeting the artist twice - once before I heard her sing, and once after. I can attest that her straightforward musical expression is sincere and without ulterior motive. It seems to me she would sing in a deserted canyon just to hear her voice bounce off the rocks.

5 out of 5 stars Where has this great voice been hiding?.......2002-03-30

My wife and I are COUNTRY fans and have been disappointed with the music that is being made lately. I just happened to come across this cd while listening to bluegrass cd's. I ordered it, and it arrived today. I wish I had known about Rhonda's music before today. I haven't heard this type of sound for many years and have missed it very much. I've ordered more of her cd's, and I hope they are as enjoyable as this one.

3 out of 5 stars Not her best work.......2001-08-09

Fans of Rhonda's award-winning recent work may be slightly disappointed with this offering from 1991.There are just a few too many slow tracks, and the material goes from bluegrass to steel-backed country with few outright winners in either category. The singing is not up to her usual standard ,with a few suspect notes. The uptempo numbers fare best, especially the Alison Krauss-backed "Lucinda" and "Bobby and Sarah". The title track lacks the polish of the version recorded by the McCarter sisters a couple of years earlier(now, criminally,no longer available on cd)and her version of "Birmingham Turnaround" also has been much more successfully recorded by the late great Keith Whitley.Banjo freaks can try to distinguish between Bela Fleck and Alison Brown who provide the main impetus to the stronger tracks.Vincent plays mandolin and fiddle on this album, and wrote the unremarkable instumental "Cherry Jubilee" that closes the set. Brother Darrin, and father Johnny, help out with harmony vocals.

          5 out of 5 stars Rhonda's Third Solo Release.......1999-11-30

If you're looking for great Bluegrass music, look no more. You've found it right here on this CD. From the opening track "Birmingham Turnaround" to the last track "Cherry Jubilee", there is NOT one bad song in the bunch... Rhonda is an down to earth singer. She is also a fantasic musician. 4 out of 5 stars Lovely Folk/Americana with strings.......2002-02-03

James William Hindle delivers beautiful arrangements accompanied by a lovely voice. I put it on and was instantly swept into his delicate world. Recommended for those who enjoy Elliot Smith, Red House Painters, Nick Drake...
