That Duke Ellington transcended all partitions of the music world is inarguable. Red Hot + Indigo nails this point home for a series of new generations, doing so in a way that the ever-elegant Duke would dig. The most frequent contributors are Medeski Martin & Wood, clocking in with six tracks, including the horn-enriched, churning opener, "Acht O'Clock Rock" and Duke's staple riff piece, "C Jam Blues." The trio's mix of soul-jazz steepings and jam-band looseness abets them wonderfully when guests such as trombonists Art Baron and guitarist Kenny Burrell join them. Stepping also to the fore is a group of stunning interpreters. Mary J. Blige nearly bellows "Do Nothing 'til You Hear from Me" in a spare, retro-soul groove. Black Star collaborates with bass great Ron Carter for a blazing social-critique reading of "Money Jungle," and Melky Sedeck percolates a sultry "Mood Indigo" that reiterates a semi-constant retro vibe that runs throughout these 17 tracks. MMW keep "Creole Love Call" within its original, shuffling framework, just as Kenny Burrell does on "In a Sentimental Mood." There's a lot of stretching, though, too: D'Angelo (on keyboards) and the Roots intermingle minimal melody statements and a punching rap throwdown on "Caravan." Terry Callier extends "Satin Doll" with his effusively broad, deep vocal, and Les Nubians give "Come Sunday" an aptly soothing spiritual edge that's irresistible. An expansive exercise in musical cartography, Red Hot + Indigo draws a map of musical cultures here, from kickin' hip-hop to slinking guitar grooves to deep-sea dub. In doing so, they show contours of Ellington that seem both unimaginable and perfect at once. --Andrew Bartlett

2 out of 5 stars Could Be Better.......2003-01-29

This CD has a number of great songs from Lavay Smith and Bill Elliot, as well as other up-and-coming swing bands. However, it could be a lot better than it is. The cover of One Hand In My Pocket made me sick... Alanis Morrisette just doesn't transfer to swing. The mixes of classic swing songs like Jump, Jive and Wail and Blue Skies just don't do the originals (or quality Brian Setzer remakes, in JJ&W's case) justice. This is a good CD to buy if you're looking to experience a variety of new bands, but don't buy it if you're simply looking for a decent version of the classics this CD boasts.

4 out of 5 stars a must listen to cd. it will make you Jump Jive An' Wail.......1999-10-05

My favorite song on the whole thing is Jump Jive An Wail I have that song stuck in my head the day!

3 out of 5 stars There's Some Great Bands On This CD!.......1999-08-13

I got this CD for a graduation present and absolutely loved some of the songs!! Some of my favorites are "Caldonia" which has a great tenor and bari sax solo, "Mildred Won't You Behave", and "Blue Skies" which is a kind-of laid-back carefree song. You have to buy the CD to see for yourself though. You won't regret it!!

5 out of 5 stars Looking for a CD to start your collection-HERE YOU GO.......1999-02-22

This compilation features some of the excellent swingers of today like Royal Crown Revue, Indigo Swing, and Lavay Smith, as well as up and coming acts like the Dino Martini's. If you're looking to start a collection, but are unsure of who to get, start with this one--it's a sound investment and I DIG IT. (I should know--I'm a DJ on a college radio station. My show features swing music). 2 of my Favorite tracks: Bill Elliott Swing Orch- Mildred won't you behave, and One hand in my pocket-Dino Martinis

4 out of 5 stars Good Big Band Sound.......1999-02-03

I listened to most of this CD while in a music store. What I liked about it is that it incorporates the many facets of the Big Band era -- not just the typical swing that has been inundating us lately. I've listened to swing music since I was born (my father grew up in the Big Band era) and this reminds me a lot of what he had me listening to. The Sing, Sing, Sing remake is good, but nothing beats Benny Goodman's version. All-in-all, this is a great mix of sound. A lot of fun!

5 out of 5 stars A must-have for Medeski, Martin and Wood fans.......2007-01-18

For those of us who love Medeski, Martin and Wood, this is a must-have. Even though MMW is only listed on a few tracks, they are the back-up band for a number of other tracks. This is MMW at their groovy best. Plus, having some good work by other Jazz notables like Kenny Burrell is also very nice.

4 out of 5 stars jazZy &hip hOp..whatta combination.......2002-03-05

this was a good choice...since it also benefits AIDS. so its like a double bonus!..Some of my favorite artists are on this tribute to the Duke!..Roots, Amel, Kweli & Mos..its a good cd, it's real chill. Sophisticated Lady w/Amel is nicely done. Her voice just pushes it over the edge! her voice, very beutiful.
This cd if full of jazz talents & great vocals. sweep this up!

5 out of 5 stars CD IS A MUST HAVE!.......2001-04-20

I bought this cd because i found out that dangelo would be doing a song with the roots, and i figured that the rest of the album who be filler like most compilation albums have become, but boy was i wrong.Since i got this cd i have not been able to turn it off. This cd really flows together and that is because it stays true to jazz even though it is done in hip hop style. The album sucessfully captures the sprit of Duke Ellington and i personally will be looking for the next installment of the series. This shows that an album with many artist can work if done the right way.
