The "Golden Age" referred to here spans The Jazz Singer and the advent of the talkies to the death throes of the old studio system in the 1960s. So vast was the era's musical landscape that even this 42-track, double-disc anthology can't encompass all its peaks. Not surprisingly, the bulk of this collection originated with the Tiffany's of the screen musical, M-G-M, a body of work whose riches here encompass both pop-cultural bedrock ("Over the Rainbow," "Singin' in the Rain," "There's No Business Like Show Business," etc.) and some less familiar, if equally delightful star turns: Clark Gable gamely "Puttin' On the Ritz"; the sassy, 1948 original of "The Lady Is a Tramp" by Lena Horne; and a loopy duet of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" by Esther Williams and Ricardo Montalban. Fred Astaire's elegant, epochal reign at RKO and M-G-M is represented by "Night and Day," "Let's Face the Music and Dance," and three others, while Metro mainstays Gene Kelly and Judy Garland share equal time and billing. It's not perfect--Cagney's "Yankee Doodle Boy" and/or some Sinatra seem more logical choices than the odd "bonus" duet of Casablanca's "As Time Goes By" and "Lara's Theme" from Dr. Zhivago that close out disc one--but it's a stunning, surprisingly comprehensive primer on the Hollywood film musical nonetheless. --Jerry McCulley

5 out of 5 stars They were right--there is NO business like the show business they did way back when !!!.......2006-11-18

Everything that happens in life
Can happen in a show
You can make 'em laugh
You can make 'em cry
Anything
Anything can go....

The clown with his pants falling down
Or the dance that's a dream of romance
Or the scene where the villain is mean
That's entertainment!

The lights on the lady in tights
Or the bride with the guy on the side
Or the ball where she gives him her all
That's entertainment!

The plot and the hot simply teeming with $ex
A gay divorcee who is after her ex
It could be Oedipus Rex
Where a chap kills his father
And causes a lot of bother

The clerk who is thrown out of work
By the boss who is thrown for a loss
By the skirt who is doing him dirt

The world is a stage,
The stage is a world of entertainment!

This two CD set amply proves that the musical melodies and lyrics from the golden age of the Hollywood musical remain unsurpassed to this day. This generous two CD set offers 42 incredible songs from Hollywood classic musicals. Most of these fine numbers are indeed from MGM, as Amazon correctly notes; but there are some RKO numbers and even a little from Warner Brothers. Thank goodness, though, that most of these songs came from MGM movies; MGM was the only studio that could boast that it truly had "more stars than there are in the heavens."

I love so many songs on these two CDs. Of course, there's the unforgettable classic "Over The Rainbow" sung by Judy Garland; she also performs "Easter Parade" and "Get Happy" on this two CD set and she carries most of the tune for "I Got Rhythm" even though Mickey Rooney helps her a little. I love "Baby, It's Cold Outside" for its' romantic overtones; and Lena Horne's "The Lady Is A Tramp" is flawless! We also get a rare chance to hear Clark Gable sing in "Puttin' On The Ritz;" and Bing Crosby's "Going Hollywood" may be brief but it's a fun song anyway.

There are two "bonus" tracks on the first CD: "As Time Goes By" from Casablanca and "Lara's Theme" from Doctor Zhivago. "As Time Goes By" is a good choice; it is another unsurpassed classic song that brings back memories and touches even the hardest of hearts. "Lara's Theme," however, is from the mid 1960s and I don't consider this period to be part of the "golden age" of Hollywood musicals.

The liner notes are excellent and they offer wonderful photos of the stars as well. The cover art is well done and the reverse cover art tells which movie each song is from and who is performing each song. Moreover, the quality of the sound is excellent especially when you consider that these numbers were recorded quite a few decades ago.

In short, this superlative two CD highlights the glory of the Hollywood musical when a certain type of sophistication dominated professional movie production. I highly recommend this CD for fans of Hollywood musicals, classic pop vocals and fans of the artists and actors who perform on this two CD set.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best cds I ever bought. .......2006-06-07

What an amazon collection of songs! This is bar none my favorite cd just because of the variety and the quality of songs on it. I love music from this era, and this cd is the perfect companion to my life. Love it! Buy it, you won't regret it for a moment!

1 out of 5 stars Never Sounded Better.......2006-03-16

Apart from the great selection of soundtracks, what really makes this compilation top value is the quality of the sound processing. Executed with finesse, these tracks sound better than when first issued and many are unedited, fuller versions: like "Singing In The Rain", for example. Throw in the great price, and this double disc set is a "must have" for all lovers of classic movie music.

It was once said by the songwriters of that era - "There are two artists you want perform your songs on the big screen, they are Fred Astaire and Judy Garland they sing it just the way we wrote it, for which you will have a guaranteed hit on your hands"...well, this collections certainly has some merit to that statement...because with Judy Garland and Fred Astaire performing seven songs each, there must be something to it.

This collection of musicals still has the magic that we remember from those bygone years...but as long as we have the labels and networks who play and show these wonderful films of yesteryear, they will never be forgotten...hats off to Rhino Records, George Feltenstein (producer) and Doug Schwartz (engineer) and Turner Classic Movies for sharing those 42 selections from 42 films...celebrating decades of the tunes and artists that gave it their all...from what it commonly called "The Hollywood Dream Factory"...The Golden Age of Hollywood Musicals is still among us...gotta love it!

3 out of 5 stars Who Buy Such Disk?.......2007-01-13

I read once that those aged over 60 are the collection buyers. Believe me that this is correct. The point is that this CD has such good music that I am proud being in that age.

5 out of 5 stars It's the tops.......2006-11-06

Excellent overview of Berlin classics sung by fabulous stars of period eras.

5 out of 5 stars This CD is the best!.......2002-01-18

Whatever style of music you like or whatever mood you are in, this CD compilation has it all. It is soothing, consoling, inspiring and just plain encouraging.

I picked up my copy at a used CD place but I have urged many other people to pick it up. It just plain feels good to take it in. It will make you glad to be alive.

5 out of 5 stars Another Solid Capitol Issue.......2001-11-05

These "Capitol Sings" CDs are terrific surveys of the works of the great American songwriters, and the Irving Berlin disc is one of the best. Standout performances include Kay Starr's "You're Just In Love," Betty Hutton's up-tempo "Blue Skies," and Peggy Lee's "Cheek To Cheek." There are also some lovely Nat King Cole numbers, and a seldom-heard Bobby Darrin swinger ("All By Myself"). A great addition to any collection of 20th-century standards.

4 out of 5 stars A wonderful tribute album.......2000-06-21

I usually steer clear of tribute albums -- with very few notable exceptions (the "Two Rooms" tribute to Elton John & Bernie Taupin springs to mind), they always fall flat. But how delightful that Capitol Records has culled from their extensive catalog some of the very best examples of Irving Berlin material recorded by some of their classic vocal artists, most notably the great Judy Garland. This album is worth the price of purchase just for Judy's rendition of "Puttin' on the Ritz" alone.

If you're a fan of Judy Garland or of Irving Berlin, be sure to check this album out.... and add it to your collection! You won't be disappointed, since at this price, it's a REAL steal!

Eric Kunzel and the Cincinnati Pops have done it again. This is a spectacular collection. It makes you feel like getting dressed up with a lot of glitz and glam and going dancing. Though I must admit that Fredrica Von Stade's rendition of "Somewhere Over the Rainbow" will definitely touch your heart.

Quality music at a great price, this collection features 20 tracks including 'How Deep Is The Ocean', 'No Strings', 'Puttin' On The Ritz' & 'Heatwave'. The Swingles have, unusually, incorporated electric keyboards, horns and drums into their usually acappella approach, resulting in some thoroughly modern interpretations of Berlin's classics. 2 out of 5 stars Doesn't work for me........2006-05-04

I LOVE the Swingle Singers. The first time I heard them sing Bach back in the 60's I was driving a car and I was so blown away that I had to pull off the road. And I LOVE Irving Berlin's music; his message is simple and direct and tuneful. And therein lies the rub. To me, the jazz vocal styles, the contemporary harmonies and the whimsical utterances of the Swingle Singers go together with Irving Berlin's music like oil and water; they just don't mix. The words and melodies are those of Irving Berlin but the end result isn't Irving Berlin. Admittedly this is one man's opinion, and others might take great pleasure in the Swingle Singers' unfailing virtuosity and inventiveness. But if you anticipate the straighforward tunes and emotional directness in Berlin's music, you are apt to be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars *****-- and many more stars after that..........2007-03-03

Needless to say, I love Taco's work, and this is definitely an ideal introduction to his material, if you're unable to find his original albums. (In the case of those, "After Eight" and "Let's Face The Music" are the natural highlights). "Puttin' On The Ritz" is a great song, and deservedly made the mythic Irving Berlin a success again, becoming a Top 10 hit in 1983 and making Berlin the oldest living songwriter to have a hit on the pop charts. Anyway, aside from bringing more attention to America's best songwriter, Taco was just a fantastic singer/songwriter on his own. The selection here is nice, and even mixes things up a bit at the end with "Superphysical Ressurrection" (from 1984) and "Got To Be Your Lover" (1989). If you're open-minded to alternate renditions of the old standards, then by all means get this album, and become a fan for life!

5 out of 5 stars don't have it but want to.......2006-03-05

I have heard the songs on this album. I have a cassette that does have lassiters theme on it. I like it. I also like superphysical resurection. Sadly that old worn out cassette is all of his I own. I bought it at a local music store on it's closeout table. I wish I had this album and plan to someday. Taco's work is indeed a novelty because his style and his choice of "era." It's not an era many in the 80's or today relate to. I however am one of the few who do and love his work from puttin on the Ritz (the first of his work I heard-I have or at least had the 45 of puttin on the ritz somewhere.) to Superphysical ressurection his most contemporary work as far as I'm concerned. There is an innocency that you don't find in most music artists. His themes are a throwback to a time when there were fewer threats to our sanity and better days were just around the corner.

4 out of 5 stars The best of the "Best Of"s........2005-07-19

Taco's recording career went a lot further than "Puttin' On The Ritz", although without any of the success of that single. Although a massive chart presence in a number of countries, "Ritz" was seen as a novelty record, and truthfully it was. However, Taco continued, seemingly reaching for that greater success, but never getting beyond the cult fan base that he has garnered for himself.

Most of his work is out of print now; although he has at least four albums that have been released on compact disc, only two best-of compilations are readily available today. This collection wisely focuses mostly on his first two records, "After Eight" and "Let's Face the Music". Both of these records are Taco's best work, mixing campy remakes with originals that were written in the same style. "Let's Face the Music [And Dance]" is as good as "Puttin' On The Ritz", and items such as "Winchester Cathedral" and "Cheek To Cheek" have an undeniable buoyancy.

Most of the songs in this collection are Taco's covers, which is a shame because he has written (along with his songwriting team) some good stuff. Check out "After Eight", a weird ditty about a gigolo who sponges off of his girlfriend, a waitress named Kate. I guarantee it will stick with you after you hear it, if only because you'll be going "Huh?" That's the weird thing about Taco's music; either you get it, or you don't. You'd be right in calling it cheesy, but it's totally unlike anything else on the market. Like the music of ABBA (although obviously without the mass appeal of their work), Taco's music exists solely unto itself.

It's a shame that some of Taco's best tracks were left off of this collection. One of his originals, "Lassiter's Theme: Beware of the Winners", is an excellent track that was written with prolific film composer Ken Thorne for the 1984 movie "Lassiter" starring Tom Selleck. Sadly, it's left off of this CD, seemingly in favor of two obscure tracks. "Superphysical Resurrection" is apparently another original track that only appeared in the form of a single, and the less said about this number the better. "Got To Be Your Lover" is a much later single that came in the late 80s and was clearly an attempt to score a hit based on the Stock Aiken Waterman craze that was going on at the time; it's a memorable track, but it seems like Rick Astley could be singing it instead of Taco.

You can't go wrong with a little bit of TACO in your life. Even if you are dressed up like a million dollar trooper. And you are trying hard to look like Gary Cooper. TACO is the way to go in life. His best song is Putting On The Ritz. Pay no attention to the TACO dissers. They don't know that much anyway.

Oh Taco. If only we all had your sense of rhythmic style and grace and woodsman like masculanity, we wouldn't be trouble with all those fakers like 2Pac, 50 Cent, Randy Savage, and Falko. Taco is an inspiration to all those who enjoy contemporary, and up to date, music, ice cream, and long walks on the beach. This music can turn any situation into a romantic situation. "On the Ritz" is by far one of the most influential songs of our time, and "Over the Rainbow" started the whole remix fad. P-Diddy, you ain't got nothing on TACO!!!

During my audition at UNT (where Lynn Teaches) I bought this CD, and I have not been able to listen to anything else (besides Fred Hamilton's "All Things Are New"). Every single song features each member of the trio. He works with a fantastic drummer and an uncommonly good pianist. The up-tempo peices will get you motivated and the ballads will inspire you to dive deep into the theoretical aspects of the song. I recommend this weather you are a beginning jazz player or an experienced one. Either way, you will learn something.
