One of the most common complaints about musicals is that the books are flimsy pretexts from which to hang numbers. Wicked runs into the opposite problem: it has a great plot, but too often the songs just get in the way. Based on Gregory Maguire's novel of the same name, Wicked tells us what happened between Glinda the Good and Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, before Dorothy showed up in Oz. And the show is lucky to boast a pair of ace leading women in the main roles. As Glinda, Kristin Chenoweth delivers a sensational star turn, displaying a crystal-pure voice and sharp comic timing; Idina Menzel lends her powerful pipes to the tricky role of Elphaba. Unfortunately, you wish they had better material to work with. Stephen Schwartz's pop score is often dragged down by overly synthetic orchestrations and sentimental lyrics (think Chicken Soup for the Witch). Still, at its best Wicked is a seductive slice of popular entertainment that could well give a younger audience a lasting taste for musical theater. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

The CD comes with the lyrics as well as the other important information for each song (producer, etc). If you haven't already seen Wicked, you may have trouble following what the show is about just from listening to the soundtrack-- you will get a feel for it but reading the Grimmerie (the Wicked book- also sold on Amazon) or seeing Wicked either on or off Broadway will make you fall in love faster with this soundtrack-

My sisters refuse to read the book they are afraid it will take away from the show. I say they are dead wrong and the book and music reviewed ahead of time will definitely enhance the theater experience. You decide, either way it's a great read, 5 stars for the generation who grew up with the Wizard of OZ classic.

The cast recording for the Broadway musical of John Waters's 1988 paean to dance, music, big beautiful women, and integration is a sheer delight. It's wonderfully upbeat all the way through, with a classic feel that's in keeping with the story's setting in the early 1960s. The characters come alive in these songs, from Marissa Jaret Winokur's (Tracy Turnblad) opening lines in "Good Morning Baltimore" to the stunningly upbeat finale, "You Can't Stop the Beat." The music is by Marc Shaiman, whose recent projects include South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, as well as a number of film soundtracks, and his compositions are simultaneously solid and exuberant. Shaiman and Scott Wittman's lyrics brim over with the unreserved passions and primary-color emotions that made the film so successful. Regardless of one's familiarity with the story or the stage production, it's hard to avoid the appeal of this recording; even the less cheerful songs are awash in bright colors, without disrespect for their subjects. --Genevieve WilliamsCustomer Reviews:

My New Obsession.......2007-02-07
From the great opener 'Good Morning Baltimore' to the best closing song I've ever heard, 'You Can't Stop the Beat', this recording is a gem.
One of my favorite songs on this soundtrack is 'The Nicest Kids in Town'. It has that kind of beat that's hard to not dance to. Another favorite is 'Mama, I'm A Big Girl Now'. It reminds me of the songs of Leslie Gore. My favorite line comes from Amber von Tussle "Once upon a time I used to dress up Ken/but now that I'm a woman I like bigger men/And I don't need a Barbie doll to show me how".
'(The Legend of)Miss Baltimore Crabs' is a glorious song for the villain. With wonderful drumming and violins in the background, Velma von Tussel has a great solo song.
'It Takes Two' is such a great slow song. I can just imagine a 1960's prom. Everyone slow dancing and the lights low. A band set up on the stage. I can't help sing along.
'Welcome to the 60's' is another wonderful song. It seems to be everyone's favorite. It's one of mine too. Harvey Fierstein is great as Edna.
'Big, Blonde, & Beautiful' is another good song. A good message to all big girls to be proud of yourself. Ignore what everyone says about you and strut. "Bring on that pecan pie/pour some sugar on it/Sugar don't be shy"
'(You're) Timeless to Me' is such a cute song between Wilbur and Edna.
'Without Love' is my number one favorite on this recording. Link proclaiming his love to Tracy who's locked up in solitary confinement and Seaweed proclaiming his love to Penny who's tied up on her bed. "Darling I'll be yours forever/'cause I never wanna be/Without love/so darling throw away the key"
'I Know Where I've Been' is a glorious gospel song. Sung by Motormouth Maybelle about her experiences and having learned from them.
'Cooties' is such a childish sounding song but it's the kind of song that should have it's own dance. It's too much fun.
The little song that follows 'You Can't Stop the Beat' is so funny and dark. I don't know the name, I just refer to as 'Blood on the Pavement'. "Don't drink and drive/please keep your head/Or come graduation day/you'll be dead".
I recommend this soundtrack to everyone. It's the kind of soundtrack that doesn't sound like a musical soundtrack.

As gleefully silly yet wickedly smart as the beloved British comedy troupe and their 1975 cinematic savaging of the Arthurian legend that inspired it, this adaptation of Monty Python and the Holy Grail by MP's Eric Idle and longtime musical co-conspirator John Du Prez has much more on its feverish agenda than merely trashing King Arthur and firmly upending his Round Table. The film's plot remains largely intact, but its core songs ("Knights of the Round Table," "Brave Sir Robin") and comic thrust have been both expanded and satirically redirected, a musical comedy shotgun that takes dizzy aim at pop culture in general, and Broadway in particular. After typically Pythonesque distractions that somehow find us in "Finland..," stars David Hyde-Pierce, Tim Curry, Hank Azaria and company get busy conjuring the Lady of the Lake with the unlikely help of "Laker Girls..," while cast members Sara Ramirez and Christopher Sieber deliciously skewer contemporary Broadway cliches via the loopy showstopper "The Song That Goes Like This," a tune whose reprise also deliciously sends up every overwrought stage diva from Merman to Minelli. Idle has shrewdly ripped off--well, interpolated--Life of Brian's "Always Look On the Bright Side" for the new show, and even a snatch of "The Lumberjack Song" in "He Is Not Dead Yet." "You Won't Succeed on Broadway" reveals the frankly Semitic secret to stage success, and the French get can-canned on "Run Away!" Meanwhile, our bravest knight is de-closeted on the Manilow-mauling "His Name is Lancelot" before the familiar sound of clomping coconut shells brings down the curtain on the season's goofiest if satirically dead-on comic delight. --Jerry McCulley

P.S. I love the songs that reference "The song that goes like this." This is supposed to be repetitive to mock its self and Broadway. It is also more comprehensive than some may lead you to believe... however just remember its called `Spamalot' not `Holy Grail' so don't expect too many Holy Grail references.

Coldplay required a lifetime to make their wonderfully assured debut, Parachutes. But it took less than two years for the moody British quartet to deliver a masterful follow-up. As a band, Coldplay have advanced to a stage where they outshine nearly every one of their rivals in terms of imagination and emotional pull. A Rush of Blood to the Head is a soulful, exhilarating journey, moving from the cathartic rock of "Politik" to the hushed tones of "Green Eyes" without once breaking its mesmerizing spell. Singer Chris Martin takes his voice on soaring flights, reaching places only Jeff Buckley previously dared to go. And the music is nearly flawless, a persuasive cross between Pink Floyd and the Verve. Even if they haven't come up with another "Yellow," you would be hard-pressed to care. This is exquisite stuff. --Aidin VaziriAmazon.com

Put together by Abba's own Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, Mamma Mia! manages to cram over 20 of the Swedish supergroup's songs into a threadbare plot. It goes a little like this: Young Sophie is getting married and she's trying to identify which of three men is her father. That's about it. Wisely, the musical doesn't mess around with the songs, save for the insertion of some dialogue or for having some of them performed by a man (it works amazingly well). Abba fans will jump on this import of the London production, but traditional fans of musical theater should consider it as well. After all, Andersson and Ulvaeus's songs have always felt as if they were more than isolated pop gems and actually belonged to a longer narrative. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:

Music doesn't come more touching than this. With their debut single alone, the emotion-fortified "Shiver," Coldplay prove they can shift between elated and crushed in a breath, as singer Chris Martin pours out music's oldest chestnut (unconditional yet unrequited love) with the shakiest of voices and a backdrop of epic guitars. For 10 tracks on Parachutes, he adds newfound meaning to the most tired and overused rock sentiments--love found, love lost, love unrequited--over acoustic guitars and emotionally fraught rock. And for once, all the clichés ring true because Chris Martin genuinely sounds like a man picking over the bones of his life, coming up with just as many reasons to be cheerful as seriously depressed. Not that Parachutes is a depressing album--there's too much conviction to the guitars and hope in Martin's words for that. Instead it's a beautifully tender balance that comes as close to perfection as anything that's come before it. --Dan GennoeAmazon.com

Parachutes.......2007-04-05
The album has a reserved, modest alternative rock sound that relies on acoustic guitars and keyboards just as much as it does electric guitars and drum rhythms. There aren't many layers or complexity to the ten tracks on Parachutes; they are beautifully simple. Chris Martin will probably never top his vocals on this album. It is his most vivid and honest delivery. One key aspect of Coldplay's music that has never gone well with me is the lyrics, and more specifically their topics. And Coldplay haven't seemed to move from where they started, but that isn't a real weak point for Parachutes, considering that this is where they started.
"Don't Panic" is one of the best songs on the album, both in terms of sound and lyrics, but when the electric guitar comes in you can immediately taste the Radiohead. "Shiver" is a much more "Coldplay" song that has a very endearing, melodic sound to it, and the fact that it isn't in 4/4 shows that Coldplay aren't just talented. But the lyrics - being about a girl - dull this display of intellect and creativity. They more than make up for it on "Spies," a darker-sounding drum-heavy piece that is surely metaphorical about life's worries, drug use, or maybe even communist China. "Sparks" is a beautiful, almost lounge-like piece that is fitting to be about a girl. Both "Yellow" and "Trouble" are overrated, but still very good songs that work perfectly on this album. "High Speed" is another very enjoyable Radiohead-flavored song that contains a lot of atmospheric guitar-work and a grooving bass line. "We Never Change" is perhaps the best song on the album, and is certainly the most expressive and meaningful. "Everything's Not Lost" is the perfect track to close out Parachutes, with its "this could go on forever" guitar and bass riffs and vocals.
The songs in and of themselves aren't particularly brilliant or overwhelming, but the whole is much greater than the sum of its parts. The album cannot be expressed in a song or two like your average pop album. It's not exactly a "Dark Side Of The Moon"-type of album either, but everything works so well from beginning to end that it is in a sense exactly that kind of album.

It's not that surprising that Rent, a successful musical with a strong youth following, would have transferred from the New York stage to film. What is remarkable is that the material has aged very well and that most of the original cast have made the trip to the silver screen. This is no small feat since nearly ten years have elapsed since the show's Off-Broadway debut and the film's release. When it opened in 1996, Jonathan Larson's rock musical based on neobohemian life in the gritty East Village felt a bit hackneyed at times; now, Rent feels more like a Broadway fantasy about life on the edge, and that new element actually works in the show's favor. The two cast additions--Rosario Dawson (replacing Daphne Rubin-Vega as Mimi) and Tracie Thomas (replacing Fredi Walker as Joanne)--act well and with emotion, but aren't quite powerful enough. They are eclipsed by vets such as Anthony Rapp, Idina Menzel, Wilson Jermaine Heredia, and Taye Diggs, who of course had the chance to perfect their roles on stage and can also be heard on the original cast recording. It's a pleasure to hear these stalwarts New York performers strut their stuff again. This soundtrack will please the show's fans, and probably attract new ones. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description
One of the longest-running shows (since 1996) in the history of Broadway, and one of its most beloved, RENT was the winner of the Pulitzer Prize for Drama and four Tony Awards, including Best Musical. Based on Puccini's classic opera "La Boheme," Jonathan Larson's revolutionary rock opera tells the story of a group of bohemians struggling for success and acceptance while enduring the obstacles of poverty, illness and the AIDS epidemic in New York's gritty East Village. Now the powerful musical marks its 10th year on stage by coming to the big screen, accompanied by RENT The Motion Picture Soundtrack, produced by Rob Cavallo (Green Day, Goo Goo Dolls, Alanis Morissette).Customer Reviews:

I have never been that big on musicals, but when the movie first came out my friend dragged me to the movies with him to see the movie, and right away I fell in love with it...and for the next week I had the songs stuck in my head, they just wouldn't go away...they haunted me in my sleep, but in a good way...I fall in love with all the music, so i had to get this soundtrack so I would be able to listen to these wonderful songs all the time, especially till the movie came out onto dvd, which i also own and love to death. The songs are so addictive...I am actually listening to the soundtrack as I'm writing this review, I can't pick out one song that is my favorite, I love all of them. If i had to choice "Will I" or "Without You". "Will I" is such a touching song on its own, but when its patterned with the movie it hit me hard, great song, it brings tears to my eyes when i listen it. And the same goes with "Without You" its just a very touching song and it connects with my life. Overall one of the best soundtracks I have ever heard.

Reykjavík-based noise quartet Sigur Rós are the biggest band in their native Iceland, which should say much, much more about the collective insanity of that earthquake-ridden, blizzard-beaten crag of an island than anything to do with Sigur Rós's sound. But in their music, Sigur Rós reflect all the breathtaking glory of the Icelandic wastes--a fairy-tale explosion of unhinged elemental majesty that's finally crystallized here, their debut European release. Poised somewhere between the haunting soundscapes of Labradford and the lilting Celtic falsetto of Enya, Agaetis Byrjun is a truly breathtaking listen. Frontman Jon Por Birgisson sings in a language that Sigur Rós dub "Hopelandic"--an otherworldly mutation of Icelandic, sung in the falsetto cadence of angels; similarly, he plays his guitar with a violin bow, opening the floodgates for brilliant waves of feedback. And while it's the opening "Svefn-G-Englar" that's Sigur Rós' moment to date, there's far more that they have to offer; listen to the pomp and flourish of a full orchestra on "Flugufrelsarinn," or the awe-inspiring near-religious mantra of "Ny Batteri." --Amazon.co.ukAlbum Description

AMAZING MUSIC BEYOND THE COMPREHENSION OF SOME POP MUSIC CRITICS MINDS.......2007-06-22
---adjective DISAPPROVING
---trying to appear or sound more important or clever than you are,
especially in matters of art and literature:
---a pretentious art critic
---The novel deals with grand themes, but is never heavy or pretentious.
-- characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
-- making an exaggerated outward show; ostentatious
I've heard this word all my life because apparently I like a lot of music that is "pretentious." The last time I heard it used was recently on a radio special about the 40th anniversary for The Beatles Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, which one critic decried as "the beginning of pretentiousness in pop music". And this for an album that is consistently at the top of almost every list as the most important album ever made-- I guess a LOT of people like pretentious art.
What these critics are saying is that pop and rock musicians that have other musical influences (i.e., world music, classical music, jazz music) are somehow falsely trying to BE world musicians, classical musicians, and jazz musicians by using those influences. Or that lyricist that have other influences (i.e., poetry) are trying to BE poets. In reality, all they are is open-minded pop and rock musicians, willing to experiment with skills they have that lie beyond the boundaries of early rock styles (i.e., Eddie Cochran, Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc.).
I'm not sure why it makes you pretentious simply because you have musical skills beyond pop and rock, but I can't imagine a more boring scenario than a genre that didn't grow or challenge itself. In reality, this is how the language of an art form evolves. The heyday for what Sigur Ros is trying to do was between 1967-1977, when progressive rock was literally a top ten chart topping phenomenon.
In the end, this is all "pretentious" means when used by such critics: they don't like the styles of music that exist midway between folk and classical, or rock and jazz, or whatever and whatever. I love music rooted in pop, rock, and folk that is embellished by all sorts of influences from more complicated genres. I love the fact that a song can swing from a gentle little folk tune to a complicated instrumental movement. I also love the storytelling aspect of longer pieces of music and concept albums-- it gives the lyricist more time to stretch out and explore a theme. These artists are not trying to be something that they are not, they are being exactly what they ARE: pop artists with ears open to other influences. This happened as soon as Paul McCartney (in 1967) came into the studio after hearing a classical work with a Bach trumpet, and he wrote and plopped a similar trumpet arrangement in "Penny Lane." It happened when Brian Wilson crumbled the Beach Boys formulaic song structure (1966) and started to record his collage piece SMiLE. And then for ten odd years after, much of the best of rock music had similar boundary-breaking tendencies.
Sigur Ros is very much in the art-rock category. You can see their lead singer from one or two vantage points (albeit extreme ones): either he is the most otherworldly supremely beautiful gift to pop music that has ever happened, or he is a pretentious pseudo-opera singer. And really, which vantage you choose depends on whether or not you are moved by his work. You can tell which camp I fit in-- I think he's one of the most important pop artists on the planet, and you'd have to be crazy not to at least give him a chance to work his magic on you. Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth VincentelliCustomer Reviews:
Excellent Musical, But Product Quality - Eh.......2007-07-15
My problem was not with the quality of the cd, but with the plastic case. The cd cases always come cracked. Although it doesn't affect the quality of the cd itself, it's rather disheartening that Amazon charges customers for its poor shipping.

Into Broadway's creative vacuum of revivals, movie adaptations, and Hollywood star vehicles comes Rent, the story of squatters, junkies, performance artists, struggling musicians, drag queens, aspiring filmmakers, and HIV-positives (and you thought Miss Saigon's helicopter landing was cool). Undoubtedly among the defining pop cultural events of 1996, Rent has already won four Tony awards and a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. More importantly, it threatens to bring substance back to the Great White Way.Transposing Puccini's 100-year-old opera La Bohème into modern day Bohemia (19th-century Paris's Left Bank becomes late-20th-century New York's East Village where the scourge of tuberculosis becomes the plague of AIDS) Rent celebrates life among the young, sick, and unconventional. While Broadway shows are hardly the place for authentic portrayals of the latest marginalized hipsters, composer Jonathan Larson (who died at age 36, days before his musical opened) managed to sculpt vivid characters and scenes that bring Avenue A as close as it will ever come to 42nd Street. And by telling a socially relevant story of living without the guarantee of a future (renting, that is), Larson does his own little bit to define an X'ed generation. At worst, Rent is the Hair of the '90s.
For the majority of us who won't be seeing Rent anytime soon, the Original Cast Recording is more than just an after-show souvenir. Well-packaged with a complete libretto, the two-CD set is a worthwhile album separate of live performance. Full of songs that are funny and catchy, inspiring and touching, smart and hip and not overly sentimental, Rent mixes showtune pop with elements of rock, R&B, dance, gospel, and tango to make one of the best albums of the year--certainly the best rock opera in decades. La vie bohème, indeed. --Roni Sarig

I'm Hooked!.......2007-05-01
I was the first in line when the movie came out and had a heartfelt emotional experience. And now it has finally happened...
I just saw the show for the first time on April 28th, 2007 and may I say GO SEE IT! The songs have not lost any relevance in the last 11 years. The cast of the tour is great and I hope one day to see the original cast perform.
Thank you Jonathan Larson! God speed and I love you :-)

Amazing.......2007-01-12
I have always thought that the comparations between "Rent" and "Hair" are totally unfair. In "Rent" we have a full cast with real and meaningful people without the false truths and lies that were around in the late 1960. Jonathan Larson is the Balzac of Generation X.
