Spanish Harlem Orchestra's United We Swing does more than just make you want to dance. The joyous collection will likely incite a full-scale house party, complete with flowy dresses, sparkly jewelry, and silky, unbuttoned shirts. The disc plays like an actual live performance, a tight mix of passion and precision. Bandleader Oscar Hernandez even introduces the entire outfit on the opening track. Horns blare, percussion pulses, and a voice of choruses guides several numbers. If nothing else, take a listen to the trio of "Sacala Bailar," "Ahora Si," and "Que Bonito," which comes midway through the disc, for an idea of SHO's sparkling seamlessness. "Danzon For My Father" is a touching instrumental tribute, and the bilingual "Late in the Evening-Tarde en la Noche" features an inspired guest spot by Paul Simon, who matches the group's swelling enthusiasm. Swing does just that--and so much more. --Joey Guerra

4 out of 5 stars You have no option but to dance.......2007-05-23

Since their arrival in 2000, Spanish Harlem Orchestra (SHO) has established itself as a standard bearer of contemporary Latin music. Directed by world-renowned pianist, arranger, and producer Oscar Hernández, the thirteen-member all-star ensemble has reintroduced the classic sounds of New York City Salsa to music lovers worldwide. United We Swing, SHO's third album, is a stunning follow-up to their 2004 Grammy award-winning album Across 110th St., and their 2002 Grammy nominated debut, Un Gran Día En El Barrio.

On United We Swing, Spanish Harlem Orchestra continues in the same classic-meets-contemporary sound, but with refreshing originality. Nine of the songs are original compositions grounded in the unique identity the band has forged based on the musical legacy of El Barrio, a pulsating Eastside community in NYC located to the south of 125th St that gave rise to Boogaloo, Latin Soul, and Salsa.

5 out of 5 stars A Mature Sam Cooke.......2007-07-26

I can categorically say this album was the cream of Sam Cooke. The reason for saying this, is to counteract the previous comment made by A. Sturley. Sam did not change his voice for this concert. Sam was getting more mature. His voice was breaking. Which I preferred. Had he lived longer, he would'nt be too far of Bobby Womack or a more polished soul singer. Also him moving with the times, who knows how he would really sound like had he lived longer. A. Sturley, if you do not believe me,buy and listen to the album (Keep Moving On).Both albums will always make music listeners take notes. The One Night Stand: Live at the Harlem Square Club was Sam Cooke delivering at his very best!

5 out of 5 stars An Unforgettable Live Album.......2007-04-17

This album is a priceless gem that you will treasure forever! Sam Cooke metaphorically rolls up his sleeves and really works up a sweat in this amazing live concert at the Harlem Square Club, giving an earthy, gritty performance that is spellbinding. Sam's delivery crackles with raw energy! He belts out the songs with an emotional intensity and sense of urgency that whips his audience into euphoric frenzy.

Some favourite, well-loved songs (such as "Cupid," "Chain Gang," "Bring it on Home to Me," etc.) have been thumpingly and effectively re-worked to give them an edginess which causes the temperature to soar in that highly charged, festive atmosphere.

You can feel the electricity in the air! Sam teases and cajoles an attentive and adoring audience who eagerly comply with the call to party. The tempo intensifies and reaches a crescendo at the end of a totally exhilarating and riveting musical experience!

5 out of 5 stars One of the greatest live performances.......2007-01-12

Sam Cooke delivers an unbelievable performance in this one. When I first got it, it was difficult for me to appreciate this live album. But as time passed by, the more it grew on me. And now, it's truly one of my favorite albums. Any soul music fan has to have this one.

The way Sam Cooke works the crowd is a thing of beauty. Those people that attended this performance are some lucky folks. He gives it his all and the crowd appreciates it. My personal favorite was "Chain Gang" because of the way he works the crowd at the end and because his voice is just electrifying with his "oh yeah" screams. Sam Cooke may not be my favorite artist but I believe he's the greatest artist of all-time. This record is one of the many testaments of that.

5 out of 5 stars ONE OF THE BEST ALBUMS EVER!.......2006-11-21

This is soul at its very best! No matter how many times I listen to this album, I NEVER get tired of it. Sam Cooke went on to inspire thousands of musicians and, after hearing this album, you'll know why. Since the new movie "Ali," starring Will Smith, has been released on DVD and VHS, a lot of people wonder about the beginning where the actor portraying Sam Cooke is performing. Well, this recording is exactly where they got the idea for the beginning of the film.
Of course, my favorite is "Bring It On Home To Me." Sam delivers his music with all the fervor of a gospel sermon and beat of a pop/doo wop song. Then, there are also the usual hits, from "Cupid" to "Twistin' The Night Away."
If you're looking for a soul album to start a collection, this IS the ONE!!! It'll keep you moving!!! The sound is no longer mono, making it all the more enjoyable. The fact that Sam could get the place jumpin' is exactly why he was such a great entertainer. You can feel the high energy and the fun of that evening back in 1963 oozing out of the stereo every time you listen to this album. James Brown may be the Godfather of soul, but Sam Cooke is the father!!!

5 out of 5 stars should get more than 5 stars!.......2006-08-19

This is the live album to outdo all other live albums. I am a head banging, rock and roller, guitar nut and this is still the best live album ever!

The main reason that it is great is b/c Sam Cooke works the audience. The cd builds up steam as the songs go by. This is a snowball rolling down a hill that gets bigger and bigger.

He talks to the audience, works the ladies, entices the men, pumps up his band, etc. The songs are almost a "best of" situation. Chain gang, having a party, twisting are all awesome!

You know how great the cd is? The recording has serious limitations. There are no highs and no lows. Horns, guitar, bass, drums are all mixed way towards the back but Cooke's singing and talking are way towards the front. It does not matter and should not influence anyone's listening pleasure.

A great comparison is to Otis Redding live at the Whiskey a Go Go. That is a good concert, fantastic sound recording and the band seriously rocks. This blows that away.

This is not only the best concert cd but also, it is obvious how other entertainers and djs modeled themselves afer Sam Cooke's style.

What a shame that this tremendous performer died in his prime.

Whoever reads this take note...I am no soul music fanatic. I am a Lez Zep. Who, Nirvana, guitarnut type of guy. THAT is how powerful that this work is b/c it most definetly rocks more than "live at leeds", "get your ya yas out", "Song remains the same", etc.

Harlem World describes a hedonistic lifestyle infomercialist Tom Vu would envy. Girls, riches, mo' money, mo' problems--it's all part of the game when you're Sean "Puffy" Combs's protégé, Mase. With his distinctive, narcoleptic vocals, Mase paints vivid pictures of singular Mase-ian problems on the dance-floor hits "Feel So Good," "Cheat On U," and "Wanna Hurt Mase?" Harlem World seems like a nice shiny package of proven hit making; problem is, Mase packs the charisma of Matt Dillon (always promising, but always the supporting actor). He has trouble keeping Harlem World interesting, hence the preponderance of guests, including Busta Rhymes, Lil' Kim, Jay-Z, Total, and Puffy, of course. Good news: the Puff Daddy chop shop is open for beat recycling, and Harlem World will ring more than a few bells of recognition. Not-so-good news: Puffy's style of commercial rap is dependent on charisma (see the Notorious B.I.G. and Lil' Kim), and Mase is running on empty. --Todd Inoue

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Celebration: Kathleen Battle.......2007-01-19

what can i say about the best of the best? As always, Miss Battle makes me wonder how anyone else would dare to sing this music after her rendition. A beautiful CD

5 out of 5 stars One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22

I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.

5 out of 5 stars A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13

If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.

Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.

With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.

5 out of 5 stars Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28

I probably have 50 Christmas albums. I love many of them. This is my favorite. Leaves me astounded and breathless every time I enjoy it.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Joy.......2003-12-07

In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.

I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.

The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.

Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.

This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

Wow, what an album! No fillers all killers, the roots sound of Africa merged with todays modern production styles. A nice funky sensibility, hip hop, house, drum and bass with the soul of Africa. I've been caning this album and it works on the dance floor, trust me - just buy it..

Wonderful music- it is truly a blending of all different styles of music with a a beat that is so contagious it'll make you smile all day long. Not one track disappoints!Looking forward to their next cd.

5 out of 5 stars Hop skip and jump.......2007-02-17

This upbeat fusion of Ehtiopia world beat and Hip-hop leaves you breathless from the outset and never lets go. The opening track Bole to Harlem sets a wonderful danceable tone. One of the biggest complaints about hip hop are the repetitive and redundant themes. Its hard to not enjoy the blended rhythms of hip hop combined with bole. THis is a cd you will play and before you know it, its all you want to listen to.

4 out of 5 stars Stomp to Bole to Harlem - Gring on volume #2.......2007-01-19

Since Mother Nature does not have a download, Dave's globe trotting rhythms can get the message across for her that we are all connected.
This CR kicks of strong with track one that will refuse to leave your brain, luckily the other tracks take you on a ride around Bole and Harlem occasionally hinting back to track one.

We all know that Harlem was the home of the fabled African-American renaissance of the '20s and the birthplace of bebop in the '40s. But it was also the spawning ground for Latin jazz, the boogalo, and the Hispanic musical lingua franca also known as salsa. The title of this CD, which translates as "A Great Day in the Neighborhood," was inspired by the famous '50s jazz portrait by photographer Art Kane. It aurally illustrates the overlooked contributions of the Puerto Rican musicians from Spanish Harlem who created salsa and kept Cuban music alive in America during the early years of the Cuban embargo. With the talented Rubén Blades pianist Oscar Hernandez serving as musical director, this band of NYC's top Latin musicians (featuring bongo drummer Bobby Allende, bassist Rubén Rodriguez, singers Jimmy Sabater and Herman Oliveira, and trumpeter Ray Vega) lay down some serious, no-nonsense salsa dura grooves. This clave-powered crash course features some heavyweight selections, including Tito Puente's "Mama Guela," the enchanting Pedro Flores bolero "Obsesión," and the Willie Colón/Hector Lavoe classic "La Llego la Banda." The mambo, cha-cha-cha rumba, and guajira are blended together in a zesty musical dish by these Puerto Ricans in the Big Apple, and it's a dish best served on the dance floor. --Eugene Holley, Jr.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars I am going to dead this stupid argument!.......2005-03-13

It's one thing to be proud of one's nationality and heiritage but this is just stupid. As a so called "African-American", I don't know a Cha Cha Cha from a Mozambique but I know good music and this album is pretty good, although I have heard better. Unless you trace your family back to Quuen Isabella or some other Spanish royalty, chances are neither you nor I will pass the infamous "brown paper bag test" (well at least I know I won't, yeah for melanin). Therefore it's pointless to feed into the whole divide and conquer thing.
In the documentary which accompanies the excellent performance film "Calle 54", Bebo and Chucho Valdes, Richie Gonzalez, Michel Camilo, Eliane Elias, and even Chano Dominguez all say that 'Africa is the Grandfather of Latin Jazz'. In case you lost count, that's two Cubans, a Puerto Rican, a Dominican, a Brazilian and a Spainard (thrown in for good measure) all saying the same thing so what are we arguing about. We know that the majority of the "ritmos" that make up what we today call Salsa came from what "re-emerged" and "melded" in Cuba. These styles were brought to New York, met with some Bomba, Plena and probably a little, Merengue and Bachata (and don't forget the Blues, Swing and Soul)and eventually became the "sauce" that we now call "Salsa".
So instead of you guys fighting, you should be happy that your ancestors were ablle to keep more of their own unique traditions and music (unlike my own) and give the world such a rich palette of culture and music. So don't let the pride blind you to the truth.
By the way, this CD is worth the price for "Obssesion" alone, as one reviewer pointed out.

2 out of 5 stars Basic and unmoving. Unoriginal........2004-12-23

With the caliber of musicians playing on this album, I expected a hard hitting original. Instead we get re-arranged covers and lots of "filler" salsa. No surprises here. The classic salsa albums are worth your cash but if you are curious, you'll play this one once.

5 out of 5 stars Solid Throughout.......2004-11-21

Not sure that the controversy in the other reviews below does much to help the potential CD purchaser to make a choice, This is very solid NY salsa with tight ensemble playing, great soloists and good vocals. I don't really think there is a bad cut on the CD. The musical forms that comprise salsa are all well represented and the musicianship is top notch. You can't go wrong buying this. I listen to it often.

3 out of 5 stars Nuyorican vs Cuban - There is a difference.......2004-07-04

First of all, on the record, it's a decent album. But the new album - Across 110 st - is better. But the bolero "Obsesion" is done perfectly and is worth the CD just for that. Further "Vale Mas Un Guaguanco" is slamming. Again though, the new album is better, if only it has Ruben Blades on 4 tracks.

Also, comparing Buena Vista Social Club (BVSC) to Spanish Harlem orchestra is like comparing Apples to Oranges. BVSC are firmly rooted in the Cuban "salsa" tradition, whereas SHO are rooted in the Nuyorican tradition. There is a distinct difference (read below). Also complaining about the voices of Ferrer and Portuondo is silly because they are both elderly and there best days are behind them. There is no way they could sound as good as younger singers in their prime.

Now, on this Puerto Rican - Cuban feud. I think I can speak ojectively because my father is Spanish, my mother Peruvian, and I was born in Australia. I have no alegiance to either side (except that I do prefer Nuyorican-salsa dura to Cuban salsa-guaguanco, etc) . Also I am 27 but am a lover of Latin American music in general and I devour it.

So here it is. The Cubans no doubt invented forms that would lead and formed the base of salsa - for example Guaguanco, Montuno, etc - but they did not invent salsa. Salsa is the music that came out of New York in the late 60's and 70's (and indeed the term didn't even get used to describe the music until mid 70's). Nobody was calling Cuban music "salsa" prior to the 70's. Salsa was used to describe the music coming from New York (and the Puerto Rican community) and the Fania label as well as the stuff on the Tico and Inca labels. Then it got adopted by every other music with a clave and is even used to describe certain manufactured pop artists (whom I won't name).

On the music itself, listen to a Sonora Matancera record and then compare it to Sonora Poncena. They are different forms of music. It's like comparing Benny Goodman to Count Basie. The fact is the "salsa" music coming out of New York/Puerto Rico in the 70's was a hybrid of Cuban music, funk, jazz, and soul. It was much more open to influence and is much more dynamic - Nuyorican salsa is disco whereas Cuban is ballroom. Willie Colon even chopped up the sacred clave so that it was almost unrecognizable, a Cuban would never have done that.

One last gripe, I keep hearing how Salsa Timba is so fresh and new and how they are mixing R&B and jazz with salsa (they don't even do it very well). What's so new about it? Wasn't this what salsa was in the 70's from New York. I challenge anyone to listen to Hector Lavoe's La Voz album (as well as countless of Colon, Barretto, Palmieri, Blades tracks) from the mid 70's and tell me that the album isn't littered with funk, soul, and jazz references from the beginning to the end.

I give love to both salsa communities (Puerto Rica and Cuba) but its about time Cubans stopped saying that Nuyorican salsa is just a badly made version of Cuban music. The Nuyoricans took Cuban music to a whole new level of experimentation and energy and created a new form that should be recognised.

Finally, it's amazing how little recognition is given to the Latino community of New York for creating salsa. It is a forgotten story and a little known fact (even amongst some latinos). I speak to Australian's (even some latino-Autralians) who wouldn't have the first clue about how important New York Puerto Ricans were to salsa history. They just assume its all from Cuba and its all the same music. From what I understand its a similar issue in the US where latino contribution to music and culture is not understood or acknowledged. When pop artists get called salsa you know there is a problem.

5 out of 5 stars An Absolutely must have....Latin/Jazz album of considerable brilliance!!!.......2006-06-23

If (Like me), you're only familiar will Eddie Palmieri (or "Charlie Palmieri"), via either's solo work, this will come as something as a slight shock, recorded originally in back in the 70's with a full band, This recording has been given a new lease of life, by the recent re-release of this seminal cd. This has the opportunity of inticing a new slew of fans, such is the brilliantly performed and arranged material here, that anyone with a passing interest in Latin, Funk, and Afro-Cuban Jazz, simply must check this out.

The Running time is only a partly 30 mins, but such complaints do prove to be somewhat redundant, as one listen to the performances contained here, will make such quibbles regarding its length seem foolish. This is the perfect example of the sound of Latin Americans migrating to North America, and becoming influenced by ther new surroundings and forming groups, and then performing/recording expressive and passionate music that not only touches upon the roots of latin music, but sounds like it was influenced by Black music such and R&B and early Soul. Because there is so much energy, modal musical shapes, rhythmic precision and melodic arrangements, that it's truly a wonder that this Cd, hasn't had the widespread recognition and praises heaped upon it, like some of the more universally recognised Jazz/Latin albums out there.

The Percussion throughout is sublime, and it highlights Eddie & Charlie's composition and arrangement skills to the fore, and if you've never given Eddie's (or indeed Charlies) other work the time of day, then I assure you, after listening to this staggering work, you'll certainly be inclined to seek out more of their work. As it takes on an almost experimental and improvisational feeling, moving effortlessly from mood, groove, feel and texture. multi-dimensional percussion sections, coupled with brass-heavy horn sections, and carefree guitar and ethereal keyboard work. Not that this album is anything less than accessible, which it frequently is...it's just that, this feels like a Special moment in time, when all the musicians are perfectly in synch with each other and remain musically locked into each other then and are Instinctually feeding off each other, you should take this opportunity to hear a exceptional one-off spectaclular performance, fron a band that would never (seemingly) follow up this landmark album. And it's a classic, not just purely for how breathtaking brilliant it was, but also for the fact that some 30 years later, it still sounds as innovative and essential as it did in the 70's. A must have release

5 out of 5 stars "If heaven exists, he'll be playing at the gates...".......2006-03-09

If heaven really exixts, Reverend Gary Davis will be playing at the gates to welcome us all in. Man!! Only a blind man could finger a guitar the way this man did. At some point the material becomes secondary to the performance of this incredible gifted musician and singer. This is music from the very core of one's being. Though there isn't a bad cut on the album, my favorite's are "Let Us Get Together" and "I Belong To The Band," to mention a few.

This is the music that influenced some of the greats, I recommend it highly.

4 out of 5 stars "Blues" finds its hope in "Faith" via blind guitarist..........2003-01-05

Gary Davis was born blind, black, and broke in South Carolina in 1896. Big obstacles, but he also was blessed with talent and got paid for his guitar-pickin' by the time he was a teen. Ordained as a minister at age 36, he changed his song inventory to Gospel and hymns exclusively. He ended up in NYC, performing at mostly Black churches and on the streets. In the late '50's, the "Folk Revival" of blessed memory provided him a brief celebrity beyond those venues. This album was recorded in 1960 at the Jersey jazz studio of the legendary engineer Rudy Van Gelder. You get 44 minutes of soul survival stuff here, and any blues buff ought to own it. The more casual fan may have to listen a few times to really like Gary's vocals, but his guitar work is fun from the first chord. The recording quality is excellent. To me, the only flaw is that each song would have benefitted from one fewer sung verse, and one more instrumental passage. It's not that Gary's voice is any more rough than other bluesmen. The problem is that the lyrics of these church songs belabor the point and get a bit repetitious. Still, he was one of the best of his kind. Imagine him at 64, alone in the recording booth for three hours, doing 20 songs, of which these are supposedly the best takes of the best 12. He had not recorded anything in four years: in fact, he had only recorded in 1935, '54 and '56 prior to this August 24, 1960 session. On that day, Kennedy and Nixon were running for president, the Pittsburgh Pirates and the Yankees were heading toward a classic World Series, and I was living about 40 miles south of the studio, getting ready to begin 11th grade. Rev. Davis was doing something more important: preserving the Black church songs of early 20th century for posterity.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Davis Introduction Available.......2001-07-21

My collection includes all of The Reverend's recorded works. If you are going to buy just one Davis disc -- or if you are looking for a good introduction to this Blues/Ragtime master, "Harlem Street Singer" is unquestionably the best choice. The recording captures Davis at his most passionate vocally and at this top of his game as a gutarist. A lot of his early work suffers from poor recording technology, however this disc sounds like it was cut in a 21st Century studio.

I'm not a religious person, but Davis' music is almost enough to send me running to church. The piercing conviction of the lyrics and sycopated guitar in Twelve Gates, Great Change and Samson and Deliah still send chills of guilt up my spine.

5 out of 5 stars As good as it gets........1999-09-06

If you enjoy both blues and gospel music, you will discover on this CD that for Reverend Davis there is no distinction between the two forms. Samson and Delilah and Death don't Have No Mercy were tunes that influenced The Grateful Dead and other Rock bands, but here you get the full, original impact of these songs.

Reverend Davis was without question one of the greatest blues guitar stylists ever, and this album captures some of his strongest recorded work. The importance and beauty of this recording cannot be overemphasized!

5 out of 5 stars best nocturne.......2006-07-09

I thought this was a great CD, especially Harlem Nocturne. I play piano and so this is by far the best rendition of that song I've ever heard. My father in 1990 thought this
was the best rend. he'd heard too-he grew up with Louis Armstrong playing music in his house in chicago in the 30's. The whole CD is easy and Great!

2 out of 5 stars Cup of Kofi, Cream and Sugar.......2005-06-28

This is easy listening "jazz." Too close to Kenny G and Michael Feinstein for my tastes. It's played expertly, but the music never challenges, never takes you on a journey. It will offend no one, but frankly I don't even want this in the background when I'm dining. I'd sooner grab an old Tom Scott album. Many many find this soothing and relaxing, and I cannot argue with that. But if your taste runs toward Coltrane, or the Brecker Brothers, or Wynton Marsalis, you will find this cup of Kofi to be pretty weak.

4 out of 5 stars Good jazz composition by an Achimotan from Ghana. .......2004-10-07

I first saw Kofi play on a TV show called Weekend rendezous sometime in 1991, supposedly a year after releasing this album.
The tracks I heard moved me very much and it took me a year to get the LP recorded on Tape. I later had the CD and played the track Lady Sits Alone in a nite club. The people who danced to it never believed a Ghanaian composed the song. All the tracks are catchy and especially Elmina and Harlem Nocturne's acoustic grand piano works are superb. The CD is a must buy............

3 out of 5 stars harlem nocturne by Kofi.......2002-08-17

I am a 50 + music lover of all types of stuff. Although this cd has been out for years I doubt that many have heard it because it is a little obscure. While driving around southern california one day I heard this version of Harlem Nocturne on a local jazz station. It had to be the very best version I have ever heard. I could not get it out of my head so I ordered my own cd and relish bringing it over to my friends homes to play and say to them "listen to this, it will knock your socks off". This cd is a great gift idea for your music lover friends.

4 out of 5 stars Terrific Smooth Jazz Album for Easy-Listening.......1998-06-19

Kofi provides a variety of keyboard sounds that are nicely blended with saks, brass, bass and percussion. This album provides a stimulating background for relaxing, or, for spinning on the CD-ROM while working at the computer.

The only reason that I had for not giving this collection a 5-star-rating was, that the vocals were a little on the lame side. That may just be my perception, however, since my taste runs pretty strictly towards instrumental jazz.

If you like Kofi, and/or, if you like smooth jazz, you will not be disappointed by this album. His cool rendition of the haunting theme in "Harlem Nocturne" is worth the price of the CD all by itself! Enjoy.

Amazon.com essential recording

Most of Sam Cooke's pop hits were sugary, blanched affairs. This album was the real deal, giving us the church-reared R&B singer who liked to tear up the clubs along the Southern chitlin circuit. Recorded in Florida in 1963, Live at the Harlem Square captures the man at his sanctified, sandpapered best--the voice worshipped by disciples from Otis Redding to Rod Stewart. No syrupy glissandos or polite Hollywood chorales here: this is sweat-drenched, back-to-basics R&B, with Sam tearing up "Feel It" and "Chain Gang," and rasping his way through "Somebody Have Mercy" and "Bring It on Home to Me." This set only makes it seem sadder that Cooke never lived to reign in the soul era he inaugurated. --Barney Hoskyns

4 out of 5 stars Cooke cooks.......2007-06-18

I gave this a 4 only because it's a live album [which I didn't pay enough attention to when buying] and I'm not a big fan of live albums. If you're into live albums, this would be a 5 for sure. Sam's rapport with the crowd in between songs is excellent too. The most famous songs [must be famous because I know them tho Sam was murdered years before I was born] are here: Chain Gang, Cupid, Twisting Night Away, Having a Party, and some others too. All in all, a good way to spend almost an hour. Who knows what Sam could've done if he hadn't been killed when only in his 30s?

5 out of 5 stars The BEST.......2006-08-31

Many consider this to be the best live soul recording made to date. After listening to this album, you will know why this is the case. I have NEVER heard energy from a recorded live performance like the energy that is bottled up in these recorded songs. Sam Cooke was as good a soul singer as there ever was and we are so lucky to have a glimpse into how good he was, even if we weren't around to witness it in his heyday. You can close your eyes and really feel like you were in that club in Miami in 1963 -- it's a magical thing. Get this and you won't be sorry!

5 out of 5 stars oh God.......2006-07-19

The Sam Cooke of Live at the Harlem Square Club always does the right thing. He believes that people are basically good, and that everything's going to turn out okay. He believes in humanity, and with the audience singing along all over this album, you almost get the idea that humanity is backing him up on that. If you want to hear an honestly hopeful album, then buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars The young man you've all been waiting for, Mister Soul!.......2006-01-24

Sam Cooke is revered as the definitive soul singer. This is a great recording of Sam in concert at a black nightclub. Sam holds the audience in the palm of his hand for the whole show. He sings in a grittier, more "urban" style than he used on his hit records. Amazingly, this great recording was unreleased at the time it was recorded, and didn't come out til over 20 years later. But it's available now, and all Sam Cooke fans should get it.

5 out of 5 stars Almost churchy!.......2006-01-11

It's too bad that Sam Cooke died so young because he could have been a great gospel singer. His songs were heavy laden with church music rhythm. The song "Feel It" will just about make you get up and start shouting. Even though the lyrics to his R & B songs are secular, you can feel an inspirational spirit underneath. It's weird! But if you listen to his songs you will know what I am talking about because you will feel something strange in your soul. It's like he had the soul of a preacher, but was swayed over to R & B. Kind of like Al Green. And the house band of King Curtis and Co. could have rocked any charismatic church!
