Izzy's Album is not Awe-Inspiring.......2006-12-13

I really agonized over this review for a couple of days concerning what I would say about this album. I've read many reviews of this album, and all of the reviews gave In Awe of You a positive review. I wonder if these reviewers listened to the same CD I did, because I found this debut lacking in so many ways. I can't deny that Izzy is a good looking man of God. He kind of reminds me of Donell Jones, with that hat and leather jacket. Unfortunately, Izzy's CD cover is about the best thing going for him, musically. From the first, second, and third listen, Izzy is not distinguishable from any other newfangled gospel artist or mainstream R&B don. I don't like comparing gospel artists to secular ones, but Izzy sounds like Usher-lite to me--with a weaker voice (if that's possible) and weaker production.

Upon the fifth listen, "Destiny" is starting to sound good. Izzy's vocals are earnest, but just don't reach the convincing intensity that the song aspires to. In fact, his background singers, who are a bit shrill, out sing him in the end.

Largely, Izzy shines the most on the choruses, perhaps because the addition of other vocals bolsters his thin voice. I'm no musical technician (I did play piano for a number of years though), but Awe's production seems to lack something. At times it just sounds chintzy, like the sound effects in "You Are." The phantom "awws" remind me of the muffled sounds of a baby or cat crying in the background. The Gospel Flava review stated that most of the songwriting and production were in Izzy's hands. If so, that explains it. Maybe he wanted to save $.

"In Awe Of You" and "Never Let Go Your Hand" are the "worshipful" cuts on the album. Again, you need more than a pretty piano and clichéd lyrics to convey the emotion of utter awe and reverence to the Lord. Staying on key helps too--at least for the listener. Nuff said.

However, the worst offense by far is Izzy's cover of "Heaven" by Bebe and Cece Winans. Izzy's voice is smooth but does not possess the robust quality of Bebe's tenor. Likewise, the female lead fails to capture Cece's crystal clear and contemplative soprano.

The one bright spot... I am so glad "All This Love" is not a cover of the 1982 Debarge classic. I would have been hopping mad if Izzy had botched it. Actually "All This Love" is one of the bright spots on the CD. It has a nice thumping beat, harmonic background vocals, an obligatory bridge rap, but overall clear lead vocals.

I hate to say this, but you're better off downloading this than buying this misguided attempt at being awe-inspiring.

OOOOOH I Like!.......2006-08-16

This CD was actually Better than I expected. i was actually expecting it to sit on my shelf for months until I feel like hearing it, but I like this CD. He has a very coulful style. A slight downfall for me was that there was a lot of rapping. i am not really into the rapping thing, but it wasn't too bad. I think my favorite song is "You Are" A song where he's expressing how he feels about Jesus to Jesus. it's a nice song. This is a very worshipful song, and he brings some of his worship to a church atmosphere with just the piano playing in the background (and the piano player is BAD, boy! WHOO!), so that added to something that I liked, most definetly. He did some teasing. In some of the tracks, they'd start out with like a Spanish beat, and then he'd mix it into a hip hop style. When I'd be expecting the song to have a salsa feel, he switches it up. NOT FAIR! lol. i was surprised at how well his voice was. And I was madd elated because some of the things he did, harmony wise, were things I would have done chillin' in the backyard with my cousins. So i like him vocally, as well. i am glad I bought this CD. It was well worth the money.

This cd was like a carpet that was pulled under me suddenly without warning. I was at first afraid to get this cd but my fears were swept away by this awesome debut. Like his cd cover it reveals alot about the cd COOL, SLICK AND LAYED BACK..this Man can sing. his tracks are neo soul...it kinda reminds me of DWELE...the same style the only big diffrence is that IZZY can SANG makes it even more better...but enough talk go get this rare cd...YES ..BEG, BORROW and don't give it back....GO GET THIS CD...NOW!!!!

"Portraits" is yet another reminder of what music lovers have lost, because it is a remarkable CD. From his opening R & B take on the classic "Rambunctious" to the three, live closing cuts, including a blistering "Orange Blossom Medley", Danny demonstrates his incredible versatility with blues, jazz and rock n' roll. Another highlight on this CD is "Lotta Lovin' ", Danny's tribute to those exciting rock n' roll pioneers, Gene Vincent and his Bluecaps--on this cut, Danny shows that he can play rockabilly guitar with the best of them--really outstanding !

If you are already a Gatton fan, and don't have this disc, push the "buy immediately" button ! If you like superb guitar playing and--somehow--are not familiar with the "Master of the Telecaster", you are not just in for a treat--get ready for a revelation ! Musicianship of the highest order !

Portrait of a Genius.......2000-09-23

Without a doubt, Danny Gatton was a musical genius: not only did he have flawless technique, but he had vast musical knowledge, a keen melodic sense, exquisite taste, fantastic rhythmic drive, and the rare ability to know when not to play. The CD is 5 stars from first to last, but my personal favorites are "Pretty Blue", a cooler, more elegant blues you'll never hear, and the live versions of "Linus and Lucy" which segues into "Orange Blossom Medley", which contains non-stop 9 minutes of the best guitar playing you will ever hear. Starting with a fast country 2-beat, Danny plays C&W guitar like only he could, then the band eases into a easy 4-beat shuffle, and Danny starts playing the best blues guitar this side of the Appalachians, or any mountain range for that matter, the band keeping up with him beautifully, and it all ends humorously. BUY THIS AND ENJOY !!!

Album Description

Bassist and composer David Chevan's first solo album is a a collection of instrumental interpretations of traditional music for the Jewish Holy Days of Selichot, Rosh HaShanah and Yom Kippur. The centerpiece of the album are six original arrangements of transcriptions from the recorded High Holy Day cantorial repertoire of the legendary Yoselle Rosenblatt. This album is a groundbreaking work if only because it is the first time that a jazz musician (or any instrumental musician) has ever made a recording solely devoted to the music of the Jewish High Holy Days.

Accompanying Chevan on much of the album is his working group, The Afro-Semitic Experience including Alvin Benjamin Carter, Jr. on drum set and hand drums, Baba David Coleman on hand drums, Mixashawn.com on tenor sax, Will Bartlett on tenor sax and clarinet, Stacy Phillips on lap steel guitar, acoustic resonator guitar and violin, and Chevan's long time partner and collaborator Warren Byrd on piano. On the remainder of the album Chevan has put together a trio featuring himself along with trumpeter Frank London, a founding member of the legendary Klezmatics, and Afro-Semitic member and Grammy award winning dobro master Stacy Phillips.

Most important to this album is the instrumental interpretation of the ancient Jewish traditional of cantorial singing known as Hazzanut. Hazzanut or Chazzones as it is also known is a singing tradition that is at the root of most Ashkenazic (Eastern European) Jewish music. The Jewish cantors chanting in the synagogues of Europe were influenced by a distinct mixture of Middle Eastern, Mediterranean and Eastern European scales and melodic figures. The cantors, known as Hazzanim, would use these figures and scales to improvise spontaeous original melodies in prayer to God. They often used krechts, or sobbing sounds and other distinctive vocal techniques in their hazzanut to bring the prayers to extraordinary vocal heights. This music, in turn, influenced later more secular Jewish musical traditions that have become better known to the American mainstream as Yiddish song and Klezmer. Every track on this recording is informed by and contains contemporary interpretations of! hazzanut.

There may be nothing new under the sun, but there are more things under heaven and earth than any of us have dreamt of. And here's one of them, a brand new interpretation of historic Jewish prayer music, jazzed up in the best sense of that word. Chevan, Byrd, and the gang are master musicians and adept at the delicate welding operation required to fuse these two musical traditions into sound that is a rare pleasure to listen to. Meditative, uplifting, surprising, and never ordinary.

A Fantastic Fusion!.......2004-01-31

David Chevan and the Afro-Semetic Experience is doing what few artists can do well: fuse Jewish sacred music with a popular idiom. Very often, I feel that other people's attempts at doing this fall short of both the Jewish and the popular, but you can hear from this recording that Chevan and his group are deeply spiritual, and they preserve the spirit of Yossele Rosenblatt on this recording in a new and refreshing way. His virtuoso bass along with Warren Byrd on the keys (SUCH a natural, this man!), Stacy Keach on Dobro (what SOUL!), and the rest of the ensemble make you long for the original recordings of Rosenblatt. I never thought that Jazz was an appropriate genre to be introduced into Jewish spirituality... Chevan has changed my mind forever!

Album Description

Bill Hicks was the last great social satirist, the true descendent of comedians like Lenny Bruce, Richard Pryor and Mort Sahl. The self-described 'Prince of Darkness,' his work confronted the hypocrisies of late-20th century American life, divining comedy from the more evil impulses of the government and the mass media while assaulting the soulnessness of mainstream culture. An alcoholic, coke addict and chain smoker, Hicks also experimented heavily with hallucinogenic drugs, and his monologues addressed issues of expanded consciousness and spirituality rare to the comedy format; for all of the rage inherent in his stand-up, his message was one of transcendence - as he frequently reminded audiences, 'The truth will set you free.' This release was recorded live on stage in 1992 at Oxford Playhouse Theater, Shock & Awe presents Bill Hicks in full flow with his views on the war and English culture.

I play this for friends and they cannot believe that Hicks has been dead for a decade. This seems fresh and relevant now as ever. There is a longer version of this show but I find this the best. Sometimes editing works to pull things in focus.

Arizona Bay NAKED.......2005-06-27

Beatles reference out of the way. If you heard AB you know what I mean in terms of the musical segues filling out a hilarious but "rag and bone buffet" recording by someone who left us way way WAY too soon. Shock and Awe treads mainly the same ground, with a few variations. I used "Hooligans" from AB to teach diction to my students. Assuming I have a job next year, I'll use the version on Shock and Awe as it is longer and, at least to me, funnier. If you're reading this you probably already own this and if you don't own it, WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? Hicks belongs in that tradition of social critics whose ranks include George Carlin, Harlan Ellison, and Dick Gregory. Eleven years after his death, it still holds up and is probably more relevant now than it was then. One more "aw come on" comparison that really do mean. Hicks is the comedic equivalent of the Velvet Underground.

Little new, but worth the effort.......2003-07-30

Imported this album direct from Britain, only to find it was to be released here soon. Go figure.

That said, this live recording from late '92, is another classic Hicks performance. While it incorporates mostly material heard before on "Arizona Bay", "Relentless", and "Dangerous", there are several redeeming aspects. As always, it's fun to hear Bill try out his material on a new audience (English, no less) and with different delivery. There are a few new nuggets here, mostly regarding Madonna's "Sex" book and England (it sounds like Bill was testing the waters with his "Arizona Bay" material.

Quality wise, this album falls near the bottom. Bill's voice is audible and fairly clear. Maybe it was just this particular night, maybe it was mixed improperly, but he sounds an octave higher. Additionally, the tracks don't segue cleanly, like my player was having trouble finding the next track (and this may very well have been the case).

Slightly better than "Love, Laughter & Truth" and "Flying Saucer Tour vol. 1", not quite up to par with the others (saving "Philosophy", of course), this is still a definite comedy must-have. As always, I would recommend picking up Bill's latter two albums, "Rant in E-Minor" or "Arizona Bay" if you're new to Hicks. Cover art is probably my favorite (assuming they don't change it for its release here), though.

Chronologically, I believe this comes after "Love, Laughter, & Truth" but before "Arizona Bay".
