After an absence of several years (1983's Old Wave had been his last release to date), Ringo surprised everyone by hitting the road for a series of sold-out U.S. concert dates in 1989 and 1990. Keeping with the "With a Little Help from My Friends" aesthetic that produced Ringo's best solo work, the All-Starr Band tour featured appearances by Dr. John, Joe Walsh, Clarence Clemons, Billy Preston, Nils Lofgren, Jim Keltner, and Rick Danko and Levon Helm of the Band. This enjoyable live document does a solid job of capturing the tour's jam-party atmosphere, with most of the guests trading turns at the microphone; Lofgren's wistful "Shine Silently," and Helm and Danko's soulful rendition of "The Weight" are worth the price of admission in themselves. Ringo alternates his biggest solo hits with some well-chosen oldies and generally sounds like he's having the time of his life. --Dan Epstein

From the Label
Ringo Starr captured live in 1989 with a virtual "who's who" of rock & roll: Nils Lofgren, Joe Walsh, Billy Preston, Rick Danko, Clarence Clemons, Levon Helm, Dr. John, and Jim Keltner. This exuberant album features wall-to-wall hits, with each of the band's singers getting a turn at the mike: Dr. John does the New Orleans standard "Iko Iko;" Helm and Danko team up for the Band's classic "The Weight" (with the Doctor handling a verse); Danko also does a heartfelt take on a favorite Buddy Holly tune, "Raining In My Heart." Nils Lofgren provides the most thoughtful moment with his epic ballad "Shine Silently," while Clemons raises the roof on a cover of Gary U.S. Bonds' "Quarter to Three." And Preston does the most high-spirited of his familiar hits, "Will It Go Round in Circles."

The real kick, however, is hearing Ringo take the mike with this stellar team behind him. Four of his biggest solo hits are included: "It Don't Come Easy," "You're Sixteen" (with Clemons' sax replacing Paul McCartney's original kazoo solo), "The No-No Song" and "Photograph," and Beatles fans finally get to hear a live version of "Honey Don't." As Musician magazine noted, Ringo still comes across as the most low-key and likeable Beatle -- and we all know that don't come easy.

Also available as a special edition with deluxe packaging. The special edition features features a CD5 with the four hit songs "It Don't Come Easy," "The Weight," "Rocky Mountain Way" (featuring Joe Walsh), and "Act Naturally" recorded live. The two latter tracks are otherwise unreleased.

5 out of 5 stars Needs A Sequel!.......2007-04-03

With so many different versions of some songs available, and some left off competely (Octopus' Garden, Goodnight, Conquistador, etc.), this is a huge and welcome addition to any Ringo (or classic rock) collection--but even at the risk of repeating several songs, the alternate versions of some of Ringo's classics with different line-ups, plus the extra material not used (partially for that reason) beg for a sequel!

5 out of 5 stars The Best of The Best.......2006-04-14

These 3 CDs contain the very best of Ringo Starr And His All-Starr Band from 1989 to 2000. With performers like Joe Walsh, Randy Bachman, John Entwistle, Billy Preston, and so many other rock greats, there is something to please almost every rock music fan. Many rock classics are played, such as "Life in the Fast Lane," "Takin' Care of Business," "Will it Go Round in Circles," "American Woman" and "I Feel Free." Not to mention Ringo's own songs, which include "It Don't Come Easy," "Photograph," "Back Off Boogaloo," and his usual assortment of Beatles songs. This CD is an absolute thrill for any rock music fan.

5 out of 5 stars It DOES Come Easy!.......2005-07-17

This neat and convenient 3-CD package contains the best of his All-Starr Band tours from 1989-2000. You get to hear all of Ringo's big songs, including "Photograph," "It Don't Come Easy," "Yellow Submarine," "Back Off Boogaloo" and more. Ringo sounds stronger on this CD than he did on his 2001 or 2003 tours. Maybe age really can hit a Beatle! After all, he is 65 now. The other performers are quite good too. I really liked John Entwistle's "Boris The Spider" (I am a huge fan of the Who also). Other reviewers have complained about sound quality, but I don't think it's that bad. But then again, I spend a lot of my time listening to bootlegs, so maybe I'm just used to it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Listening & Historical Too!.......2004-08-13

I highly recommend you purchase this CD & the accompanying DVD. Great songs, (all of which you will know) played by musicians who obivously checked the own indivdual egos at the door. My only complaint about the CD (and the reason for 4 stars instead of 5) is first, the engineering & mixing of these songs. In some cases the volume level of these songs are so low, you really need to crank your stereo to hear properly. Then the next song will come on, and your speakers just shake your room because of the volume levels being set to high. Secondly, in some cases the vocals are lost behind the instruments. Lastly (and this is just my own personal opinion) the CD was great listening too, until the end of disc 3. I never was a fan of Eric Carmen, and his 2 songs at the end of the CD just ruin a fun filled CD. His songs just bring the CD to a screeching halt. I would have loved to hear Joe Walsh's Rocky Mountain Way, or additional songs from Billy Preston and/or Burton Cummings, who only received 1 song from each. Other than that, I still highly recommend buying this CD. It's not only great listening, but it's historical too!

1 out of 5 stars This CD Set Didn't Digest Easily.......2003-04-25

This Ringo Starr music-lover has been buying tunes from Amazon for almost as long as they've been selling them but this is the first review I've cared to write. I often turn to Amazon for its "complete" musical selection -- particularly for performers like Ringo Starr -- which brick-and-mortar music stores often don't carry. This album of Ringo's though, is less than I would've expected, far less, particularly in quality of audio. There are some groups, like Pink Floyd, whose live concert recordings are the equal of studio recordings. This album doesn't even come close and it becomes apparent from the get-go with one of Ringo's anthem songs, "It Don't Come Easy."

Simply put, the instruments more often than not overwhelm voices. Some of the era's finest rock stars perform some of their finest respective songs on this album but are so woefully recorded that you have to wonder if any forethought, whatsoever, went into planning the recording.

In "It Don't Come Easy" it's as if the dudes sitting at the mixer controls -- at about Ringo's second stanza -- all-of-a-sudden realize that his voice is barely heard and make noticeable adjustments at that time.

Peter Frampton's "Show Me The Way" is a tune in which the integration of his guitar playing is an essential part of the song's popularity. While discernable, it does not have the prominent role found on Frampton's studio or "live" albums.

Ringo's voice has never been particularly robust or forceful. While other album producers have been careful to capture the essence of his enjoyable style, this album fails miserably in that department. On "You're Sixteen, You're Beautiful And You're Mine," one frequently cannot hear Ringo's complete enunciation of "sixteen" and "... you're mine" as his voice trails and is overwhelmed by the instruments.

Being a longtime Ringo fan -- I even very much enjoy his very country "Beaucoups of Blues" album -- I had eagerly awaited this compilation but now wish I hadn't wasted the money, for it won't get another play on any of my systems.

5 out of 5 stars Ringo Rocks!.......2007-04-12

Another sample of the greatness of an All-Starr Band show. Ringo is the heart of the band's set. A must buy.

4 out of 5 stars Good overall.......2007-04-03

Good songs, but the entire band is not listed anywhere (have to go to the web to find out who else is playing). Also, based on the tour it's from there could have been a couple of additional songs that were left out. But the performances are up to the standards of his usual all-star casts, even though Supertramp has never been a favourite if mine (and 3 of the songs on here are theirs). Shelie E & Howard Jones are particularly good.

4 out of 5 stars great music.......2006-09-07

I bought this thinking it was his 2006 All Star Band--it's not but that's ok. Lots of good songs--some of the old standards on all the All Star Tours. Rodger Hodgson, Ian Hunter and Greg Lake were GREAT additions. The only disappointing thing was I like the booklets in cd's that have stories about the artists, songs, tours, etc and this had nothing but the track listings. Overall...classic Ringo--fun from beginning to end.

3 out of 5 stars Good Music But An Unnecessary Purchase.......2005-10-26

This CD features some god cuts. Only 5/12 are sung by Ringo, and nearly every song on this CD was rereleased on the 3 CD "Anthology set. I say pass up this one and go for the boxed set. You'll get nearly all the same tracks, plus a whole lot more of Ringo's songs, as well as many other performers like Randy Bachman, John Entwistle and many others. This is a great CD,but if you already have the Anthology set, you won't find anything new here.

4 out of 5 stars Recommend.......2005-08-19

I attended one of the Ringo Starr All-Band concerts back in 1989 and it was fabulous! This CD is a good representation of the talent who participated in the All-Starr Band. I love this CD but rated it a 4 as half of the songs are Ringo's. With all the talent in the band they maybe should have done a couple less Ringo songs and included some hits from the other members. Also, it would have been nice if Yellow Submarine was included. In any event, I am glad they produced this CD. I would recommend it to all you Ringo (and other members of the band) fans.

4 out of 5 stars Ringo gets by with a little help from his All-Starr Band.......2003-07-17

One day, six years after making his previous album, Ringo Starr decided to spend a couple of months on tour. "I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends" has always been the most identifiable song for Ringo from the days of the Beatles and remained a central philosophy of his recording and performing career after the Fab Four imploded. Consequently, Ringo hit the road with what proved to be the first of several "All-Starr" bands. The title is not even close to being hyperbole since you start with Joe Walsh (The James Gang and the Eagles) and Nils Lofgren (Crazy Horse and the E Street Band) on guitar and Billy Preston and Dr. John on keyboards. Ringo does not even have to play the drums because you have Jim Keltner (The Attitudes) and Leveon Helm (The Band) for that, Rick Danko (The Band) on bass guitar, and Clarence Clemons (E Street Band) wailing on sax. Clearly a good time would be had by all and at the end of the tour the last concert at the Greek Theater in L.A. was recorded, resulting in this 1989 album.

It is not that there is a preference for wanting to hear Ringo sings his hits songs live as opposed to the standard studio recordings that made the charts. Ringo starts with "It Don't Come Easy" and ends with "Photograph" (appropriately), with "The No-No Song" and "You're Sixteen" in between. The only "Beatles" song is "Honey Don't," which was written by Carl Perkins and you can make what significance of that you will. Consequently Ringo does less than half the songs on the album, with everybody but Keltner taking a turn out in front on a song. Preston's "Will It Go Round in Circles" and Walsh's "Life in the Fast Lane" are the recognizable hits, so it is not surprising that it is the more unfamiliar tunes, such as Nils Lofgren's "Shine Silently" and Rick Danko's cover of Buddy Holly's "Raining In My Heart" that stand out. The recordings are not as clear as you would like but this is offset by the great sense of fun. "Ringo Starr and His All-Starr Band" is not a great concert album, but they certainly had fun and if you have an enduring affection for Ringo and his eclectic little collection of hits then you could have some fun listening to this one as well.

3 out of 5 stars The first All-Starr Band.......2002-07-10

When Ringo decided to get together with a few friends and tour; it was time to party. Just looking to have a good time, Ringo is represented by 5 of his songs and he opens and closes the CD, but all the artists make contributions. From Dr. John doing "Iko Iko" (again!) and a hard rocking "Life in the Fast Lane" with Joe Walsh going crazy, the collaborations are loose but there is a definite sense of fun here. Even little known songs, like Nils Lofgren's "Shine Silently," and Rick Danko's take on Buddy Holly, ("Raining in My Heart") are treated with equal energy. A good keepsake from a fun show, but that is really all it represents.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Collection of Oldies -Plus!.......2002-04-09

Ringo Starr began his legendary "All-Starr Tour" with this collection. It encompasses a great group of individuals that have done enormously well in the past and continue the legacy with these songs - backing eachother all the way. Levon Helms holds the best with "The Weight", Joe Walsh sets forth with "Life In The Fast Lane" and Nils Lofgren does beautfully with his always 'live' version of "Shine Silently". Ringo, of course has his staples here as well. If this doesn't sound good enough, consider buying the "Anthology" collection with three discs (this one included) that comprise the rest of three concerts and dozens more of guest stars.

5 out of 5 stars Ringo is Still Great.......2005-02-13

This CD was recorded not long after Ringo's 63rd birthday. But age hasn't stopped Ringo, for he has hit the road again with another "All-Starr Band" lineup. The results are great. Ringo plays his usual assortment of hits, including "It Don't Come Easy," "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Honey Don't" and "Yellow Submarine." The All-Starr Band numbers don't excite me that much, but Ringo's performance is as good as ever. So I can recommend this CD to any Beatles fan.

2 out of 5 stars Doesn't Capture the Live Experience.......2004-06-26

I saw this show at The State Theatre in Easton Pa. It was the smallest venue on the tour and I was in the second row. It was as if Beatlemania never died! I had seen the All Starr Band on every tour since the inception but this show was incredible. So much so that I went to see it again three days later at the PNC Bank Arts Center - the local amphitheater. All of the intimacy was gone and the show was less than thrilling by comparison. I love Ringo but lets just say that this recording is representative of the amphitheatre show. The sound is shallow and you get the feeling that the band is just going through the motions. As stated in other reviews, the omission of Paul carrack's incredible rendition of Tempted (A highlight of both shows) is a great disservice to music lovers. Also, the band did an acoustic version of Here Comes the Sun in tribute to George Harrison that was moving. That too is missing. This CD is for fanatics only. I'm a fanatic and yes - I'm glad I bought it.

1 out of 5 stars No "Tempted," no purchase...sorry........2004-05-03

Having purchased all other "Ringo's All-Starrs" CDs, I was kind of......UUhhhhhh....when I read that this incarnation included the guitarist from Men At War...whoops, "Work," the bass player for, God help us, the Babys, and once again trotting out Sheila E. "I believe we WILL give THIS one a miss," I sadly explained to my wife, who had LOVED Ringo in 2001. But there WAS one redeeming factor, keyboardist Paul Carrack from Ace/Squeeze/(let's be generous & blot out "Mike And The Mechanics," PLEASE) So, OF course, I had to check out the songs 2003's incarnation had inflicted on us. I won't dignify Men At Work, The Babys, and Sheila E's...."contributions," but WHY, oh WHY did the producers of this CD include "The Living Years" (which, next to "Feelings," "Freebird," "Achy Breaky Heart," anything by Neil Diamond/Molly Hatchett/and/or "Stairway to Heaven," has a very prominant place on the jukebox in Hades) and leave out "Tempted?" WHO PUTS THESE THINGS TOGETHER?

4 out of 5 stars Shelia E is still the best thing, next to Ringo on this cd........2004-03-25

Yes, yes ANOTHER live Ringo Starr cd. It's not the live Ringo stuff you buy these for anymore, it's the All Star Band. I saw this incarnation, and was dissapointed, and this cd shows why. While there are highlights, supplied by Ringo as well as the lovely and talented Shelia E, the rest is boring, and sad to hear. John Waite's two songs while HUGE in their day, did not age well. Paul Carrack on the other hand of his two songs only "Living Years" made me feel like twisting in my seat. The two Colin Hay songs, only "Who Can It Be Now" really makes me want to tap my foot. Despite the many versions of Ringo songs we get at least they make me wawnt to tap my foot.

God bless Ringo for doing this, I enjoy the shows, but this version lacked something (at least in my humble opinion)

That said, Ringo decided to move into the '80s with this version, and while it looked good on paper, this was the least fun (for me) of the 6 times I've seen the All Star Band. My favourite being the versions with Peter Frampton, Jack Bruce, Gary Brooker, as well as the last version with Shelia, Greg Lake, and Roger Hodgson.

While it may sound like I am slagging the All Star's that is not my intention, I love this concept, this was just not as exciting as the previous......if you are a fan buy this, even if you're not buy it anyway, I'm sure you will find something fun.
******
After thought(s): After I wrote the above review I went back and listend to this again, and again, and again. My conclussion: It is good, and while it seems to be lacking the power of say the last live All Star release it DOES have it's own hot spots.

It is good in it's own right, at first listen you might find the performances uninspired, but give it a few tries, the fun will come, it did and I enjoy this much more then I first did.

This CD is delightfully energetic. "Photograph" is very upbeat, and the rest of the performances are played splendidly. Almost all of my Ringo favorites are here, including "Don't Go Where The Road Don't Go," "With a Little Help From My Friends," "Yellow Submarine" and "Back Off Boogaloo." Notably missing: "It Don't Come Easy." But that one's on the DVD of the tour, so all is well. The All-Starr Band is also very strong. "Give A Little Bit" is a highlight. I have never seen Ringo live, but after hearing this and other releases, I hope he comes back soon!

Who has more fun performing than anyone? What's his name? RINGO! He gets buy with a little help from his friends and what friends. If you can't see him in person this CD is the next best thing. BUY IT!

My beloved wife, a die hard "Gen-Xer" and some 17 years younger than I, often has a difficult time understanding why I am so unregenerately, unrepentantly...well, ELITEST about the music and musicians from the Woodstock Generation. And this CD FULLY explains/justifies that opinion. Still..Woodstock Generation musicians and Generation X musicians sharing the same stage and working in perfect synchronization...Wow! Thank You, Ringo Starr! And to think that my generation used to consider You "the dumb Beatle." (I better shut up before I invoke other Beatle "wives," or "dieties" with 14 blue arms...) Ringo's "new All-Starr Band" did do a FANTASTIC show, and now, Ann and I have "our" CD. In fact, I won't even be snide and make mention of Sheila E or Howard Jones' presense. SHE was an absolute MONSTER, perfectly replicating Carl Palmer's drum parts, although I could have easily gone without having had to suffer through material from her affiliation with "that [person] formerly known as..." And Howard Jones...well, he DID play the prerequsite synthesizer solos, uh, correctly. Still, the band was tight as a tick, and, of course, Ringo was/is the consumate showman. My only gripe with the CD is that there are just TOO MANY Roger Hodgson/Supertramp songs on it, and only one each from either Greg Lake or my all-time-#1-Rock and Roll-hero, Ian Hunter. True, both Greg and Ian did sound sort of tired - but, truth is, I wanted Ann to hear "All The Young Dudes" with a "worthy" guitarist playing that immortal Mick Ralphs/Ronson lead guitar part, instead of some brat from from Johnny C Mellonhead's band. Still: I don't think that there ever was or WILL be a concert that both the Woodstock AND Generation X could enjoy together, and that alone justifies this CD.

5 out of 5 stars 5 Stars for Ringo and the All - Starr Band.......2002-10-04

I've seen countless live concerts over the years, many of them have been high profile multi-media extravagnzas. Not this one.

Ringo Starr and His All Starr Band have quietly been hitting the road for a number of years, playing small to medium sized venues, with hardly any fanfare.

But what makes these secret little shows so special is the way the entire band comes together and shares each other's music. Ringo doesn't just hit the road and stand in the spotlight. Instead he brings with him a band of friends with a variety of musical backgrounds and they all play and sing together.

If you ever get a chance to catch Ringo and His All-Starr Band in concert... GO! Until then, grab the CDs of the prior shows and enjoy!

Telarc's SACD recording is 5 Star. This is elevator music. I'm almost old enough to remember the Beatles on TV. This is not them. This is Beatles ala choir and orchestra. Very Good, if that's what you were looking for.

3 out of 5 stars Great CD, docked two stars for..........2001-08-07

...the worst and most insulting liner notes in the history of recorded music. Every member of the All-Starr band from '92 is a great musician, but you'd never know from these wise-guy, unfunny liner notes. These musicians deserve better, Ringo deserved better, and you deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars Great Live Performance By Sir Richard Starkey, MBE.......2000-09-13

Since his generally Ho-Hum years of the 80's, Sir Richard has come out with some solid performances: "Vertical Man," "VH1 Story Tellers," "I Wanna Be Santa Claus," and this gem. Honestly, Ringo should have done this a lot earlier in his career. Without a doubt, he would have made a killing. But, then again, better late than never.

On this live performance -- one of the most successful in the 1990's -- Ringo is joined by some of the best in the business: Joe Walsh, Burton Cummings, Dave Edmunds, etc. The music on this live performance is electrically solid.

This is a good, old-fashioned concert. . . . good music and loads of fun. The "Star(r)s" really enjoyed themselves on-stage. This contributed to the excitement, high energy, and enjoyment of this highly successful tour. I guarantee that your ears will be glued to your system -- from the "Really Serious Introduction" to the "WALHFMF" Grand Finale. Without a single doubt, Ringo and his "All Stars" never sounded better. I only regret that I wasn't there to see this live and in person (of course, being stationed in Korea has its limitations).

This CD is well worth owning. It is simply GREAT.

Terrific Music. . . . High Energy. . . . . Loads of fun. Where can you go wrong. Buy it today!!!!
