Classic Masters - Taste of Honey.......2005-09-26
The only thing I really wanted the Sukiyaki song to play for my students in Japanese class. It turned out it was fun to hear Boogie Oogie Oogie again and I enjoyed some other songs too.
bobbyohyeah.......2005-08-16
YES they were a great band and YES we want to hear their songs remastered to the finest quality but WHY OH WHY would you remaster short versions?? I have to wonder what record company phillistine would remaster disco classics like Boogie Oogie Oogie and Rescue Me as single edits only and not the original extended versions. Collectors of disco music want complete versions. Next time get it right please or dont bother.
Three star rating for the greatness of the artists and the budget price of the CD but true fans should question whether it is worth purchasing.
Slammin Set.......2003-09-15
Taste of Honey were a Bad Duo.these Sisters threw down on there Instruments&brought alot of flavor with there vocals.they got songs that you know anywhere you go.you can groove to them&then get Mellow to them.
Taking me "back in the day...".......2002-06-01
OMG, I loved A Taste of Honey when I was in high school (during the late '70s). Recently, I've been nostalgic for those kinder days and I've been purchasing quite a few classic CDs...I found this and purchased it immediately! I'd forgotten how truly beautiful Janice Marie Johnson's vocals are on songs such as "I'll Try Something New," (cover of a Smokey Robinson tune), "Sukiyaki," and "Rescue Me".
Whatever happened to these ladies? I think they still have a lot of good tunes in them...

Rory Gallgher the best Irish Blues Rock!!.......2005-06-25
It's unbeliavable this great musician is relatively unknown. The great creativity and fusion with four generes (Blues,Jazz,Folk,Rock) make him only one with his own style, If you like the blues rock and jazz tunes, this album it's a milestone from Ireland. Songs like "What's going on" we heard riffs blues to hard rock , "Railway and gun" a Folk and blues song with a strong solo,"It's Happened Before, It'll Happen Again" with fusion jazz & blues, the beauty folk song "If The Day Was Any Longer", the blues trademark of Rory "Morning sun", and my favorite supersong "Eat my words", all songs in this album are greatest, it's the kind of album where each one of the songs it's a real pleasure to listen.
Rory Gallagher fronted the blues-rock trio Taste, which experienced reasonable success in the U.K. in the late '60s and early '70s. Taste was molded very much on the model of Cream, adding some folk, pop, and jazz elements to a blues-rock base, and featuring a virtuosic guitarist. They weren't in the same league as Cream, particularly in the songwriting department, and were (like Cream) prone to occasional blues-rock bombast. But they weren't a bad band in their own right, exhibiting a lighter touch than most British blues boom outfits.
The focus of Taste was always upon Gallagher. In addition to playing accomplished and versatile lead guitar, he sang in a gentle but convincing fashion, and wrote the band's original material. Much of Taste's repertoire was more restrained and balanced than the territory Gallagher would explore on his '70s outings, which placed more emphasis upon him as guitar hero. Gallagher also played occasional saxophone and harmonica with the group.
Gallagher formed the first version of Taste in his native Ireland in 1966, with bassist Eric Kittringham and drummer Norman Damery. In May of 1968, he relocated to London and, still months shy of his 20th birthday, formed a new version of Taste with bassist Charlie McCracken (who had played bass with Spencer Davis, though not at the peak of Davis' hit-making days) and drummer John Wilson (who had been a drummer with Them, likewise not during one of their well-known incarnations). Two studio albums followed in 1969 and 1970, the second of which made the British Top 20. Taste was still virtually unknown in the States when they broke up shortly afterwards, although a couple of live albums were released in the early '70s to keep some product on the shelves.
rory should've stopped here.......2004-10-21
This is Rory Gallagher at his most creative and most humble, and probably happiest, I'd wager. After going solo he tried to preserve his creativy but got sucked into a guitar hero trip, along with alcoholism. Most Rory solo albums are poorly recorded and full of over-playing. Rory was also not a very good blues player, yet chose to make blues his signature song structure as his solo career progressed. With Taste his love of the blues is readily apparent but it's more of an ambience. I'd stack this album, plus the previous Taste, against all of his later output.
On the Boards - a lot of tastes in addition to the blues.......2003-09-29
One of my favourite albums in my collection. I agree with some of the reviewers below that it is completely different to Taste's 1st album (maybe that Blister on the Moon on Taste I announced the future sound). On the Boards covers a greater variety of styles and moods than the former somewhat orthodox rock'n blues album. On the Boards offers fine nearly jazzy improvisations (It's Happened Before...), but also tender folk-rock tunes, sung beautifully by Rory (If the Day ..., If I Don't Sing ... etc), and of course, the hard rock guitar and bass riffs that are often used as small intros to the compositions (What's Going On and others). It is this exciting blend of influences that makes this basically blues album so outstanding. The Taste's arrangements are very simple, but still make a wonderful overall robust sound with 3 people playing 5 instruments (g, bg, ds, hca, sax). The individual tracks alternate different atmospheres: the gloomy one (the bluesy On the Boards, It's Happened Before ..), which may remind you of the gloomy dusks in Ireland), the raw one (Railway and Gun a.o.), which may remind you of the lively Irish whiskey bar, and the flashes of sunlight of the Irish summer (If the Day Was Any Longer, See Here). I think the album brings a genuine Irish sound, different to any other British or American rock'n blues bands. Definitely a 5-star album, essential to any rock'n blues lover's collection, the best way to see who Rory Gallagher was.
Just a small note to the Philip deCatanzaro' s review (just one below): I also remember that people knew quite infrequently of the Taste (even those who knew Rory's name). However, in our pack of the guys at a Prague high school in the early seventies, the Taste were very popular. And they remained so for most of us.
Tastefully Taste - Rory Showing His Best.......2003-05-01
I was a Taste fan right from 1969 when I was just a pimply faced young guitar slinger. Although the first (green) Taste album shows a rougher edge, "On the Boards" shows how versatile Rory really was. Aside from the excellent song writing, Rory shows us his ability to play the sax and harp. The excellent bass slappin' Richard McCracken shows us his jazz influences and dynamic drumming fills from John Wilson make the title song unforgetable.
On the Boards was a better produced one than the first. The guitar sounds have better variance and the dynamics of each song come to life. Another of my favorite Rory albums is "Deuce". I am more impressed with the 3 man band Rory albums, although Blueprint and Tatoo stand out.
As I type this I remember that none of my highschool freinds new of the band Taste. I played songs from this album with my blues band then, and would not be ashamed to now. I have since met a few other Rory fans and now that I have the CD I really want them to listen to what they missed.
This has got to be the most influential albums for me as a young guitarist and continues to be a valuable part of my collection.
Rory the musician.......2001-01-25
Rory Gallagher was a phenomenally talented musician. Although Eric Clapton is probably the best all around guitarist in the world, if you narrow the field to spontaneous rock guitar, it's a toss-up. Unfortunately, Rory's early death in 1995 forces us to say it was a toss-up. "On The Boards" is the greatest album ever recorded by Taste, lead by R.G., of course. I attended 2 live concerts by Taste in the late 1960's , while attending the Queen's University Belfast, Northern Ireland. Most of the tracks from "On The Boards" were played. The guitar work was brilliant, as expected. More impressive was Rory's ability to play two instruments at the same time. I saw and heard him play the guitar and harmonica at the same time. Both to perfection. One of his unique trade marks was to sing the same notes he was playing on the guitar in unison; like a duet. This is heard on several of the tracks, including "Eat My Words". In "See Here" we get to hear what is essentially classical guitar on his acoustic axe. Again, excellent. Probably, there was no instrument Rory could not play well, and "On The Boards" contains a solo saxophone performance as an example of that. It is world class. It was his ability to play different instruments, sometimes more than one at a time, all to perfection, that lead me to entitle this review "Rory the musician". If I could add one more track to the album, it would be "Blister On The Moon". It's dynamic Rory at his best.

Briefly. This was the day Rory Gallagher upstaged Jimi Hendrix.Rorys first band Taste blew Hendrix away this day on the isle of man.Great album, sound quality is poor.
Rory and Robin show Jimi the door ............2007-04-05
You all know the score by now - fewer and fewer people are challenging the opinion that Rory Gallagher was perhaps the finest, most fiery and most consistent guitarist of the last 50 years and, thank God, he left lots and lots of proof.
Just before going on stage for the Isle of Wight set, Taste had their gear stolen and so had to play on borrowed kit - and just look what they achieved. Rory manages to produce bursts of speed and fire on the old Strat without ever entering the dreaded realms of widdly woo inhabited by such as Van Halen, Satriani and the whole ghastly lot of them, however good they may be technically.
What's Going on?, the opener for On the Boards (buy NOW), just steams and roars with the whole band's interlocked ability. Sinner Boy has the most staggering slide solo and Feel So Good has the most wonderful intro and outro - and Rory is at double speed on this. Catfish, by then their show stopper, is a true show stopper: but the whole set is really really good and full of class. McCraken on bass and John Wilson on kit are very good and often underestimated. They push Rory on and challenge him to new heights.
I know a lot of folk who went to this festival and they all talked with awe in their voices about Taste and Procol Harum, with Robbie Trower at that stage. They all agreed, too, that Hendrix was, sadly as often, out of tune, out of time, horribly stoned and uninspiring. Legend and fond memory has changed this view, but I saw Rory make Hendrix look very small at the Woburn Abbey festival in 68,with a pretty grim bass and drummer, so I believe it. Hendrix' live recordings are mostly quite unlistenable, Rory's are almost all fantastic. I think that posterity may have made the biggest error of all time in putting Hendrix on a pedestal and forgetting Rory G. He wouldn't have thought so, of course - far too modest and self effacing.
This is a very good and very exciting performance. Just remind yourself, or learn for the first time, who was the real blues guitarist and singer of the 60s and 70s. Yes indeed - and great vocals too. Remember also that these were young kids, all younger than the memnbers of, say, Fall Out Boy. There's a lesson there somewhere about "progress" .....
Indispensible - to redress the balance a little about who "got" the blues from the outset.
Raw sound from 1970.......2004-12-31
A unique blues sound out of Ireland.Fronted by blues legend Rory Gallagher, this live recording captures the spirit of the Isle Of Wight Festival (Hendrix played the same festival).
Complete with feedback and a snare drum that rattles with the bass lines. Good road music !
Great performance from Rory.......2004-03-24
Rory Gallager was one of the last true great guitarists.
This CD shows his talent evolving, to I believe his peak in 1974 with the Irish Tour CD and DVD also available.
A master blues guitarist with vocals more fiery than Eric Burdon.
This CD has average sound but worth getting for the performance of Sinner Boy alone.
Rory Gallager is the guitarist Eric Clapton should have been in the 70s, listen to this and you will know why.
If it's the blues you want.............2003-01-02
For me this disc along with "Live Taste" is the high point of the late Rory Gallagher's recorded work and also sets the view that Rory Gallagher was taste on it's ear.Throughout this set the rhythm section of McCracken and Wilson support ,cajole and at times threaten to upstage one of the best blues guitarists ever to set foot on a stage. This is a no holds barred blues rage from start to finish, these guys play with a passion and commitment that no longer seems to exist in rock music.I have no idea who followed them onstage at the Isle of Wight, but I bet they took a long time to set up,this was no easy act to follow.Another reviewer has described this set as incendiary and I couldn't agree more.
The sound quality on this disc is fairly ordinary(mine came with a sticker claiming it had been re-mastered)but I still have to give it 5 stars. If it's the blues you want...look no further.

Customer Reviews:
A major debut from the guitarist's teenaged guitarist.......2007-01-24
Like other reviewers, I saw Rory at a festival and was hooked. It was Woburn Abbey in 1968 and we had already had our ears reamed by a quite dreadful performance by Hendrix - out of tune (horribly), out of time (woefully), perfunctory, noisy, uninspired. In fact, I wonder if the Great God was like this on stage more often than not. Anyway, on the Sunday evening on came Taste and just blew Hendrix and his foul noise away - and I was very far from the only one to think that although few would admit it today since Hendrix has been canonised.
I went to see the band at the Marquee very shortly after that (Rory, Norman Damery and Eric Kitteringham) and Rory told me that they had done a few sessions and had one single on the Irish Major Minor label - Blister on the Moon c/w Born on the Wrong Side of Time. After a long hunt I tracked it down and played it to death.
After more gigs than people realise in this line-up, Gallagher formed the band that plays on this, the first "real" Taste album. The two Major Minor tracks are repeated and show an already good feel for composition. The epic "Sugar Mama", which was a tour de force on stage and used to include Summertime and also a Chim-chiminee riff, comes off well here, very raw and basic, although recorded in the back of a Mini, I guess. "Hail" is a very odd acoustic song with wierd words, with a small quote from Bach in the instrumental section. "Leaving Blues" is good, well played and thoughtful, and shows Gallagher's love of country blues artists such as Blind Boy Fuller, Scrapper Blackwell and the composer of Polk Salad Annie, the hugely impressive Tony Joe White. Dual Carriageway Pain starts with a searing riff and a good punchy rock song follows. To avoid track listing, the whole album is a canny mix of acoustic, blues and almost rock songs that showed Rory's ability in all fields as well as pretty good support from Ritchie McKraken and John Wilson, playing a lovely snappy Rogers kit. Movin' On is a lovely country shuffle with a nice elctro acoustic solo, very well sung.
"On the Boards" followed this which was a real groundbreaker and featured the solo of solos on "What's going On?", as well as Rory's first foray into alto sax, because "nobody can make it sound how I want" he told me.
Taste is a very good debut from three young lads and shows that Rory was to become a major force, which he did. The new live DVDs available from Amazon remind us that he becaame arguably the most exciting player in a basic no effects, no pedals format. He was never ever boring and this CD is worth every penny.
Later he went on to record with Muddy in "The London Sessions" which for him was like meting God. For the record, his contributions to the album are light years ahead of all the other usual suspects. Even from the early days, Rory "got" the blues.
My son watches the DVDs all the time. He manges to resist Green Day, Yellowcard, Fall Out Boy and all these other noise merchants. There's hope.
Born on the wrong side of time ... indeed........2006-12-19
Having no clue what I was getting when I first bought this back in the early 70's, I have to confess that I am now certainly quite biased when it comes to the music of Rory Gallagher. I'm guessing that it was the spring of 1973 or so when my parents took me shopping and I found my way to the music department and discovered a bin loaded with discounted cassette tapes. I was in my very early teens (i.e. not yet driving) and my musical knowledge was still pretty limited. What I saw in the bargain bin looked to be a collection of blues based rock bands with a few psychedelic holdovers from the late 60's: Fleetwood Mac, Cold Blood, Country Joe & The Fish, Ten Wheel Drive, and Dave Mason were the ones that I had my eye on. This would be a personal purchase made from my very limited funds so I could only afford one (even at the discounted price). The decision was made even more difficult when I dug down deeper into the bin and found Taste's first album. The cover art caught my eye so I scanned the song titles to see if I could tell what type music this cassette might contain: "Blister On The Moon", "Dual Carriageway Pain", "Hail", "Born On The Wrong Side Of Time" ... it sounded quite interesting. But, should I choose something based on a cool cover and interesting song titles instead of selecting from bands that I had at least heard (via older cousin's and friends) or heard of? Absolutely!
Fast forward 30+ years and I still hold this release in such high regard that I make sure that it is always packed in the car when I take a long trip. It is a uniquely pure-yet-raw collection of tunes. The tone and the volume/power that comes through in the band's playing on songs like "Born on the Wrong Side of Time", "Sugar Mama", "Blister on the Moon", "Same Old Story", and "Dual Carriageway Pain" are so brutally honest and emotional that to refine it for the sake of polish and precision would totally defeat the purpose. The softer (but not soft!) cuts like "Leaving Blues", "Hail", and "I'm Moving On" are pristine in comparison without sacrificing any of the emotion or grit. Richard McCracken's bass and John Wilson's drumming on "Leaving Blues" set the tempo perfectly for Rory's slide guitar bursts and their steady presence in Hank Snow's country blues/shuffle "I'm Moving On" really makes that number swing. The synchronization of Rory's playing with his vocal delivery on "Hail" is the reason that this song still rates among my favorites in all of his catalog. Similarly, Rory's sing-the-notes-he's-playing free-for-all on "Same Old Story" is another special treat. The hard rock treatment that Taste gives to the bluesy "Catfish "is, in a word, EXCEPTIONAL. There are hard rock tunes out there that don't have the kick that Taste's reworking of this blues classic has. Cactus fans, think of what that band did with Howlin' Wolf's "Evil" and you'll have a good idea of what I'm talking about.
The raw emotion and passion displayed on Taste's first release and the impressive creativity found on their second offering, "On The Boards", has seldom been matched by bands with far greater output to their credit. It is a shame that this band did not endure.
Blind Faith/ Delaney, Bonnie and friends/ Taste/ Chicago Amphiteater, 1969.......2005-09-21
Rory blew Clapton -away- when they all jammed at the end, and I didn't even know who he was at the time, so no prejudice.
Great Raw Blues Rock.......2001-03-26
The debut of the great Rory Gallagher !! If you love his work you have to check out Taste, his first band. The recording is raw, probably live to 4 track in the studio with little if any overdubbing, and not much in the way of any real production, not unlike the first couple Groundhogs albums, both in style and recording technique. "Blister On The Moon" reminds me of something Cream would have done around the time of Disraeli Gears. Rory did all the writing with the exception of a Leadbelly cover and one other traditional blues. As always, the guitar playing smokes.
Not quite, but close.......1999-08-11
This is the first official recording of Rory Gallagher. At the time of this recording, I get the impression that he still needed to do some housecleaning in regards to his guitar playing, but he goes for it all over the place just the same. Very ragged production by Tony Colton, of Head's Hands and Feet fame. Sometimes the long guitar improvs seem meandering, or out of tune, but that raw soul comes through. What a HUGE difference between this and their second album, "On the Boards", which is great as well, but far more experimental. Upon my first listening, many years ago, I actually didn't care for this album at all. Just the other day, I listened to it with headphones on, and despite all that I just said, I still found it very enjoyable. A good find, but by no means should anyone let this be their introduction to Rory's guitar work. His advancement between this and his first solo album is astonishing. But, there's still many moments of greatness here.

Tracks with a TASTE OF CHOCOLATE to satisfy any rap fan........2007-04-03
Its hard to believe that this album was released 17years ago and is still off the hook. Its basically a fun album that reminds you of the type of hiphop that used to be out and influenced so many artists like Nas, Biggie and Jay-Z (whom Kane made him his hypeman and one of his 1st appearances on the "Show N Prove" track from his "Daddy's Home" album). Kane is widely credited as one of the finest to ever do it, a legend and an icon. Kane's delivery and versatility has always been one of his strongest points but at times its also been his Achilles heel. Tracks like "All Of Me" and "Big Daddy vs. Dolemite" were very difficult to get into as a result, compared to the rest of this album. The other 9 tracks, intro and outro are perfect even after this amount of time. The beats are excellent. Both funky and smooth. Kane's rhymes are outstanding with a vast array of wit, humour and intelligence. His delivery is sharp as a ginsu, as usual. The standouts from the remaining 9 tracks were "Cause I Can Do It Right", "Its Hard To Be The Kane", "Who Am I?", "Keep'em On The Floor" and "Put Your Weight On It". A definite must-have for any Kane/rap fan.
FOR ME AS WELL, THIS WAS HIS LAST TRULY ESSENTIAL EFFORT.......2007-02-02
this is the last one that truly shows why kane is one of the best mcs ever to pick up a mic. like i said, i wish that he was more consistent with his other albums. this one is pretty much like the other one.....many styles.......sharp delivery. however, this one lacks that oomph of the first two. i just wonder if he would be talked about more if he made two to four more essential recordings. nevertheless, kane is the man!!!!
The end of the beginning.......2006-04-12
4.5 stars - Kane's 3rd outing proved to be the last one to showcase the King as he should be remembered. Production by Juice Crew chief Marley Marl is solid as usual. King Asiatic Nobodoy's Equal brings the smooth heat once again. Collaborations with Barry White, Gamilah Shabazz (Malcolm X's daughter) and Dolemite broaden the album, but still fit within the Kane coolness. Of course, he has a few songs to brag about how slick he is, but he does show a deeper side on a couple of tracks as well. Not his best album, but still light years ahead of most of the bubble-gum-pop-rap coming out nowadays. Highlights include "It's Hard Being the Kane", "Dance with the Devil", and "Put Your Weight on It."
the last tight cd from big daddy kane.......2003-05-11
I loved this cd way back in 1990 kane drops some tight rhymes in his trademark flow and I love big daddy vs dolemite it is hilarious while dolemite woops kane with his old school flow, can't forget who am I where kane drops science on being black and features the daughter of malcolm x of all other people and dance with the devil has kane preaching out on violence and drugs in the hood worth a listen for oldheads.

Customer Reviews:
Disco Poetry.......2004-02-12
Boogie Oogie Oogie was a bright jewel in the crown of American disco music, a work of rhythmic and lyrical poetry, the beat of a drum come to life. The triumphant "Get down -- boogie oogie oogie" takes its place among the most intense lyrics ever penned. It's as if Boogie Oogie Oogie was the Disco movement's Battle Hymn of the Republic... "There's no time to waste let's get this show on the road" calls forth with the same impact as "Mine eyes have seen the glory...", inspiring people to action. Buy this CD today. Boogie Oogie Oogie is a literal masterpiece.
Great musicians who did not get their due.......2002-05-04
Hazel Payne and Janice Johnson were years ahead of their time. They wrote, played instruments and produced. This track features their talents. Boogie Oogie oogie is only one of their materpieces. Rescue me and Sukiyaki are good hits too.
Boogie Oogie Yes.......2000-06-04
Every time I think of A Taste of Honey, the only song that comes to my mind is Boogie oogie oogie. These ladies were one of many pioneers of disco. They may not be around anymore, but for groups such as the Village people, the Bee Gees and a Taste of Honey, it's proven that disco has made a comeback. If you really want to relive the days of disco, then this is one CD you definitely don't wanna pass up!
this ladies were the real deal.......1999-10-13
combining solid song-writing,production,and playing there own instruments they grooved.this set bumps like madd here.i couldn't wait to get this they were not only great musicians but also super fine.they were more than just a disco group or fad they were real deal artists.this disc has many diverse styles and tastes.
