musical in 1960. over the years i have had the honor to see
almost all of the giants of american song, garland, streisand,
patti lupone, lena horne, betty buckley, barbaracook etc. in
"broadway, my way" linda eder cements her place as the best of the best. from an anthem like "i am what i am" to the lovely
"on the street where you live" captures you body and soul.

Well after listening to the album, starting for the very beginning I found the gamble had worked. Songs such as 'She Says' are beautifully written and sound good if not better than 'Collide'. Throughout the Album Howie Day desplays his lyrical and musical ability, the music gets better as you go through the album.
Those of you who are into 'Lifehouse', 'Switchfoot' and to an extent '3 Doors Down' and 'Goo Goo Dolls', this is really a must have, but those who are still confused - BUY the album because you get a lot more for your moneys worth than just getting the single.
Listening to it now, its one you can't get bored of because its not an artist they overplaye on the radio consistently. I'm looking up to a follow up on this album!!

It's hard to pick one favorite song here because they're all so good. Like most of the band's songs the lyrics are really powerful. Sometimes they're called Alternative and Punk, but I'd term their music as closer to rock--something similar to Daniel Powter and a little softer than Matchbox 20 (circa "More than you think you are") and a little angrier/punkier than Train.
"Radios in Heaven" is likely the most well known song on this album. It's a classic lost love ballad and is quite good. However, I find the band's break up songs to be much more powerful and evocative. My personal favorite on this CD is "Penny (Perfect for you)." The song begins with the recurring line "What's your car doing outside his house, it's three o'clock in the morning"--a line that sets up the theme for rest of the song. Interestingly, this song keeps the same tempo and upbeat sound of other songs on the album (like "Happy Someday"--a forward-looking song about not dwelling on regrets) so that it is only with repeated listening that the underlying meaning comes through.
That's the great thing about this album. The songs are all multi-dimensional and offer a unique experience.
Noel Gallagher said that they would never release these greatest hits, but here it is. Much like their peers, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass, Suede, and Verve, Oasis has all released greatest hits CDs after ten years. Britpop is now a decade old. It is still popular, and very few bands, other than Arctic Monkeys, and Libertines, have come and replaced them with something better or equal. Oasis' recent tour featured most of the songs from this collection, plus a few more from the new Don't Believe The Truth. These songs have soaked into the British sensibility like no other recent UK band. Of course we have "Live Forever" and "Supersonic" from the first album. There are "Wonderwall" from the second. But there is not so much from after Be Here Now. Half of the album is from the first two albums. The other half is early b-sides, and one or two tracks, from the rest. It's kid of an odd collection. Most of the Oasis fans have all these tracks on the previous releases. Some of the other Britpop bands offered some new tracks or unreleased material. Placebo had a DVD included. I guess Oasis is saying to all future generation: "Here is the classics, if you want to look into it further, check out the other albums." Great cover by Peter Blake. One Liam song is included.
Over seven years ago, after disappointment after disappointment with SOTSOG, HC and...dang, I can't even remember the name of the album that followed that (btw, as with many other "true" Oasis fans, BHN is still my favorite Oasis album, top to top, and also signifies the end of Oasis as "Oasis", the headstone of the mayhem), I still managed to listen to the boys a bit here and there and compiled my own bootleg album of Oasis "anthems", including a nice middle set of classic Noel acoustics (a staple for anyone who's ever seen the Brothers live). So, here goes:
1. Listen Up (extended version)
2. Rockin' Chair (a bit "Beatle-esque, but much more raw than Lennon-McCartney could ever be)
3. Wonderwall (of course)
4. Sunday Morning Call (after the first listen of this song I had to play it again back-to-back, as if for proof of its existence. I just couldn't believe how beautiful it was.)
5. Little By Little (again, of course)
6. Talk Tonight (thus begins Noel's acoustic)
7. Half the World Away (Paul Weller's fav)
8. Angel Child (demo...don't ask)
9. Heroes (better than even Bowie himself)
10. Magic Pie (alone worth the purchase of BHN)
11. Don't Look Back In Anger (once heard this song sung by a drunken wedding party in backwoods Ireland. Priceless!)
12. Live Forever (..."Er, that's if you want to." - Liam, live, Cigarettes and Alcohol single)
13. Whatever (classic Noel rip-off, but still the best single never released in the US)
14. Married with Children (how is it nobody ever talks about this song? A classic cook-kitchen end-of-the-night work song!)
So there you have it. My very own Oasis "compilation". Savvy?
Anyone who says they dislike Oasis is only familiar with Wonderwall & Champagne Supernova and say they dislike the "attitudes". Nevermind that Oasis single-handedly changed the way an entire generation of listeners approached their own lives by writing astonishing songs that made you feel invincible. Forget "Rape Me" or "I Hate Myself & I Want To Die", Oasis are about making the most out of life and not wasting a single second. It's there in the lyrics, in the Marshall Stacks & Les Pauls, and in the melodys that will never grow tired.
I'd rate this album a 10 out of 10 were in not for one glaring ommision... not a single song from the 3rd album, Be Here Now. Noel Gallagher has become ashamed of this album over time due to the reviews recieved upon release as an overblown record with too many long songs. Well, having been there from the beginning, I'd say Be Here Now is my favorite Oasis record, primarily due to the fact that it's the sound of the summer of 1997. Big and exciting, and almost constantly rocking, Be Here Now warranted at least 1 track on Stop The Clocks and it could have featured 3 or 4. Don't Go Away is to me the single most beautiful Oasis song and should have been among the first 3 or 4 Noel chose for Stop The Clocks. Meanwhile, D'You Know What I Mean? is the single most exhilirating Oasis song ever released and would have added to the track listing as the most interesting and self assured track on Stop The Clocks. With 9 songs on each disk, the inclusion of these two tracks would have made it my dream Oasis "Best Of" rounding it out at 10 tracks per disk and making for a more complete Oasis overview. Other than that, it's still a fantastic document of the most important rock & roll band of the last 30 years.

Noel's brother Liam was asked about Oasis in general, and he had this to say:
"We are bigger than Jesus. We will be as big as the Beatles, if not bigger."
They are behind the material on this album (sometimes referred to as a greatest hits CD). Think about it.
We can at least know that Liam's claim rings false. Oasis (mercifully) is not bigger than Jesus. As for the Beatles, this CD was put out on the same day (to rival, maybe???) the new Beatles "Love" CD. Let's look at the Amazon Sales Rank. As of today, Beatles "Love" is #3 on Amazon's top 10 Music list. "Stop the Clocks" is at #3,715. Music fans have made their choice.
Save your money! Or better yet, spend it on good, original British music. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull...the list goes on.
So I was really hyped to hear that the entire concert soundtrack was about to be reissued on CD. Seven extra songs! Warm with nostalgia, I finally bought the disc. Boy, was I let down. First, it isn't the whole concert. "I Zimbra" is particularly missed. Then, of all the crappy songs to include over that one, we have the Tom Tom Club and their SERIOUSLY dated "Genius Of Love."
One of the brilliant things about Talking Heads is that they may have been trend setters, but they were never trend mongers. The music sounds just as fresh today as it did when I slit the shrink wrap on the 1984 Album. But the Tom Tom Club was a lightweight side project that scored one novelty hit, and it sticks out like crayon smears on a DaVinci. I reach for the skip button just about everytime its lame, cliched, and oh so 80's stage patter starts to invade what used to be a flawless CD.
It takes what used to be a 5 star CD and knocks it down by one. It also provides continual proof that that not all unreleased tracks are really a "bonus." Since it has finally come out on a double disc, I strongly recommend the remastered and reissued "The Name Of This Band is Talking Heads" over this. At least the expanded tracks aren't an emarrassment.
So, what is the big deal, you ask? Well, picture this. The soundtrack begins with "Psycho Killer," one of the first really big hits for the group. Instead of the entire band being onstage, David Byrne walks out with an acoustic guitar and a boom box. He presses PLAY on the box, which cues a drum program to begin playing. So the first song is just David Byrne singing and strumming his guitar, accompanied by pre-recorded percussion. For the next song, "Heaven," Byrne is joined onstage by bassist Tina Weymouth. Then Chris Frantz's drumset is wheeled out, and the three of them go into "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel." We finally hear some real drumming, not the predictable, computerized beats in "Psycho Killer." The album really begins to come alive. Then they go into "Found a Job," and things get more interesting. Byrne swaps his acoustic guitar for an electric, and lead guitarist Jerry Harrison comes out, meaning we now have two guitars. By the time the fifth track, "Slippery People," is underway, the entire band (including the extra musicians and backup singers) are on the stage, and now things are cooking. What happens over the remaining twelve tracks can only be described as an overload of the senses.
The purpose behind the concert was to provide a unique experience for the concert-goer, to create visual as well as aural art. Some of that sense is lost on the CD listener, but some of it remains. The songs were translated to disk beautifully, so that they still retain just about everything that made them a pleasure to listen to while watching the film. One can almost picture David Byrne running laps around the stage, dancing with the lamp, or wearing the big suit.
The concert resulting in the film and this album was performed shortly after the band released their 1983 album "Speaking in Tongues." So, needless to say, many of the songs you will hear are from that album. And I have to say that for each of them, I prefer the live version to the studio version. Each one of them sounds more vibrant, more full of life when performed on the stage. The improvisation on "Burning Down the House" is as good as it gets. Ditto "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," which is one of the most beautiful things I've heard, and I don't even like love songs. The studio versions lack that extra energy. Their pulse is just too slow. This is never more true for "Life During Wartime," which is actually a song from 1979's "Fear of Music." But anyway, this song displays Byrne's tendency to perfectly mismatch music and lyrics. The pulsating beat of club rock flows beneath what I interpret to be a humourously disturbing tale of a country under martial law. The song should not work as well as it does, and yet somehow, they pull it off. Anyway, after hearing the live version of it, I can no longer listen to the studio version. Also noteworthy is the improvisation on "Crosseyed and Painless." The intro and the extended guitar solos are just the icing on the cake for that one!
If there is a bad song on this album, it would have to be the interlude by the Tom Tom Club (a solo project of Heads drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth). "Genius of Love" could have been a great song. The instrumentation is very good. Sadly, it's ruined by Frantz's raucous babbling. He's attempting to be random like David Byrne, but tragically, he's not good at it. Other than that, this album is solid gold. It demonstrates the full potential of live music, and sounds amazing while doing it. Whether you're a fan of the Talking Heads or not, this album belongs in your collection.
The Special Edition is the entire film soundtrack (minus some stage banter and the cut performances of "Cities" and "I Zimbra"). Their imagination made Talking Heads one of the greatest live bands of all time. The songs are mostly from SPEAKING IN TONGUES, but they also include interesting and in some cases superior versions of songs from all of their albums prior to 1983 with the help of the Tom Tom Club.
In addition to STOP MAKING SENSE, I recommend the newly released CD version of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. Listening to both would map eight years of live performances and barely short of 4 hours of live material.
You won't hear better country than "I Don't Believe You've Met My Baby", "You're Running Wild", "My Baby's Gone", and the title song, "When I Stop Dreaming".
In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!
A must-have collection unless you want to invest in the multi-disc box.
Ok, enough of that. Both are masterpieces in their own right, but "I Just Can't Stop It" takes the cake, IMHO. And I've been listening to ska for quite a few decades now...and just came from seeing the Beat (as they're known in England; unfortunately an American band named the Beat had them precursor their name with thier country of origin...) for the 2nd time in 6 months. They played over 2.5 hours straight through, and are at the top of the list of energetic bands I've ever seen. And live, they are much different than they are on record -- both are brilliant, in their own special way. My favorite song off the CD, "Twist & Crawl," which is more new wave/mod meets ska, became an insane dub-fueled monster live.
If you are a fan of music, especially one of the 3rd wave of ska (e.g. Sublime, No Doubt, to name the most famous...and who blended punk rock with ska) and want to know some of the origins of the music, even though Sublime covers Toot's "54-46 Was My Number" and never covers any of the 2nd generation (even looking through my prodigious Sublime bootleg collection), this album is for you. And for those wondering what ska is, this is for you...it is a masterpiece. It's better than any ska anthology you'll find IMHO.
Quibbles about the British edition aside (only the early American version of the cd has Tears of a Clown and Ranking Full Stop), this record is as socially conscious as it is fun. Ranking and Wakeling were not overly opinionated lads, but they made their points eloquently and with arresting honesty. It is quite often the case, however, that you find yourself singing along to a beautiful harmony, only realizing later on what the lyrics actually say. I only noticed the political overtones of 'Stand Down Margaret' after grooving to it for some two or three years. :)
It's a shame that a group of this caliber splintered after only three albums, but I suppose we should count ourselves lucky to have heard them at all.
Already full of nonstop, infectious boppin' tunes the band's US label added two songs to the original album -- "Rankin' Full Stop," and a cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "Tears of a Clown" that had been stand alone singles in the UK. By omitting those songs from this CD reissue the album has been restored to its original running order and, as a previous reviewer noted, becomes the album the way the band intended for it to be heard.
But all of that is really pretty moot because this is still a great, great record with songs like "Best Friend," "Mirror in the Bathroom, "Hands Off She's Mine," and "Wine and Grind/Stand Down Margaret" (ah, the days of the anti-Thatcher/Reagan anthems) that compel you to hit the repeat button on your CD remote over and over.
Ignore the reviewers who don't know the history of this album and get this -- the complete and original version of one of the all time great albums.

This, CD 2 does contain the video for Don't Stop Now, which is really nice. It uses Nick Seymour's album artwork in a really wonderful way.
So, if you are a real fan of the Crowdies, like I am, ahem, then you really should get this single. And of course, CD 1 as well, for that non album track!

The people who felt betrayed when Linda Eder covered several pop songs on 2002's Gold will be relieved that her follow-up, Broadway My Way, is a return to the Great White Way. As if to prove that she isn't limited to either the songs of Frank Wildhorn or ballads, Eder tackles some well-known show tunes. The ballads tend to be overwrought, so it's best to look for the uptempo numbers. The singer's take on "Some People" is technically fine but so va-va-voom showbiz that it lacks the deranged edge that makes the song so compellingly dramatic. Things work a lot better on "I Am What I Am": while Eder doesn't take it to the top (or rather over the top), this is as close as she gets to Mermanizing a number. Elsewhere, "Don't Rain on My Parade" (immortalized by Streisand) and "Man of La Mancha" are appropriately brassy and triumphant, with Eder roaring her way through both songs. Fans of both Eder and Wildhorn should note that the singer reprises her Svengali's "Gold," the title track from her previous album, and an excerpt from his long-in-the-works Camille Claudel. --Elisabeth VincentelliAlbum Description

UK band.......2007-05-26
Noel Gallagher said that they would never release these greatest hits, but here it is. Much like their peers, Blur, Pulp, Supergrass, Suede, and Verve, Oasis has all released greatest hits CDs after ten years. Britpop is now a decade old. It is still popular, and very few bands, other than Arctic Monkeys, and Libertines, have come and replaced them with something better or equal. Oasis' recent tour featured most of the songs from this collection, plus a few more from the new Don't Believe The Truth. These songs have soaked into the British sensibility like no other recent UK band. Of course we have "Live Forever" and "Supersonic" from the first album. There are "Wonderwall" from the second. But there is not so much from after Be Here Now. Half of the album is from the first two albums. The other half is early b-sides, and one or two tracks, from the rest. It's kid of an odd collection. Most of the Oasis fans have all these tracks on the previous releases. Some of the other Britpop bands offered some new tracks or unreleased material. Placebo had a DVD included. I guess Oasis is saying to all future generation: "Here is the classics, if you want to look into it further, check out the other albums." Great cover by Peter Blake. One Liam song is included.
If yer at all into Oasis..........2007-02-04
Over seven years ago, after disappointment after disappointment with SOTSOG, HC and...dang, I can't even remember the name of the album that followed that (btw, as with many other "true" Oasis fans, BHN is still my favorite Oasis album, top to top, and also signifies the end of Oasis as "Oasis", the headstone of the mayhem), I still managed to listen to the boys a bit here and there and compiled my own bootleg album of Oasis "anthems", including a nice middle set of classic Noel acoustics (a staple for anyone who's ever seen the Brothers live). So, here goes:
1. Listen Up (extended version)
2. Rockin' Chair (a bit "Beatle-esque, but much more raw than Lennon-McCartney could ever be)
3. Wonderwall (of course)
4. Sunday Morning Call (after the first listen of this song I had to play it again back-to-back, as if for proof of its existence. I just couldn't believe how beautiful it was.)
5. Little By Little (again, of course)
6. Talk Tonight (thus begins Noel's acoustic)
7. Half the World Away (Paul Weller's fav)
8. Angel Child (demo...don't ask)
9. Heroes (better than even Bowie himself)
10. Magic Pie (alone worth the purchase of BHN)
11. Don't Look Back In Anger (once heard this song sung by a drunken wedding party in backwoods Ireland. Priceless!)
12. Live Forever (..."Er, that's if you want to." - Liam, live, Cigarettes and Alcohol single)
13. Whatever (classic Noel rip-off, but still the best single never released in the US)
14. Married with Children (how is it nobody ever talks about this song? A classic cook-kitchen end-of-the-night work song!)
So there you have it. My very own Oasis "compilation". Savvy?
The Most Important Band Of The Last 30 Years.......2007-01-18
Anyone who says they dislike Oasis is only familiar with Wonderwall & Champagne Supernova and say they dislike the "attitudes". Nevermind that Oasis single-handedly changed the way an entire generation of listeners approached their own lives by writing astonishing songs that made you feel invincible. Forget "Rape Me" or "I Hate Myself & I Want To Die", Oasis are about making the most out of life and not wasting a single second. It's there in the lyrics, in the Marshall Stacks & Les Pauls, and in the melodys that will never grow tired.
I'd rate this album a 10 out of 10 were in not for one glaring ommision... not a single song from the 3rd album, Be Here Now. Noel Gallagher has become ashamed of this album over time due to the reviews recieved upon release as an overblown record with too many long songs. Well, having been there from the beginning, I'd say Be Here Now is my favorite Oasis record, primarily due to the fact that it's the sound of the summer of 1997. Big and exciting, and almost constantly rocking, Be Here Now warranted at least 1 track on Stop The Clocks and it could have featured 3 or 4. Don't Go Away is to me the single most beautiful Oasis song and should have been among the first 3 or 4 Noel chose for Stop The Clocks. Meanwhile, D'You Know What I Mean? is the single most exhilirating Oasis song ever released and would have added to the track listing as the most interesting and self assured track on Stop The Clocks. With 9 songs on each disk, the inclusion of these two tracks would have made it my dream Oasis "Best Of" rounding it out at 10 tracks per disk and making for a more complete Oasis overview. Other than that, it's still a fantastic document of the most important rock & roll band of the last 30 years.

Noel's brother Liam was asked about Oasis in general, and he had this to say:
"We are bigger than Jesus. We will be as big as the Beatles, if not bigger."
They are behind the material on this album (sometimes referred to as a greatest hits CD). Think about it.
We can at least know that Liam's claim rings false. Oasis (mercifully) is not bigger than Jesus. As for the Beatles, this CD was put out on the same day (to rival, maybe???) the new Beatles "Love" CD. Let's look at the Amazon Sales Rank. As of today, Beatles "Love" is #3 on Amazon's top 10 Music list. "Stop the Clocks" is at #3,715. Music fans have made their choice.
Save your money! Or better yet, spend it on good, original British music. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Jethro Tull...the list goes on.

The soundtrack to the Jonathan Demme documentary, Stop Making Sense captures the Talking Heads live in 1984 on what would turn out to be their last major tour. This collection, and the film, is a true gift to the band's fans, a testament to the Heads' extraordinary talent, both in the studio and especially onstage. Frontman David Byrne infuses each song with a jolt of energy and drama that could only have come from a late-'70s art-school student. Now-classic tracks such as "Psycho Killer," "Girlfriend is Better," "Once in a Lifetime," "Take Me to the River," and "Burning Down the House" have never sounded better. This expanded 1999 reissue includes all nine of the original tracks, plus seven previously unheard cuts, including "Heaven," "Found a Job," and "Crosseyed and Painless." --Lorry FlemingCustomer Reviews:

Bigger is not always better.......2004-10-26
So I was really hyped to hear that the entire concert soundtrack was about to be reissued on CD. Seven extra songs! Warm with nostalgia, I finally bought the disc. Boy, was I let down. First, it isn't the whole concert. "I Zimbra" is particularly missed. Then, of all the crappy songs to include over that one, we have the Tom Tom Club and their SERIOUSLY dated "Genius Of Love."
One of the brilliant things about Talking Heads is that they may have been trend setters, but they were never trend mongers. The music sounds just as fresh today as it did when I slit the shrink wrap on the 1984 Album. But the Tom Tom Club was a lightweight side project that scored one novelty hit, and it sticks out like crayon smears on a DaVinci. I reach for the skip button just about everytime its lame, cliched, and oh so 80's stage patter starts to invade what used to be a flawless CD.
It takes what used to be a 5 star CD and knocks it down by one. It also provides continual proof that that not all unreleased tracks are really a "bonus." Since it has finally come out on a double disc, I strongly recommend the remastered and reissued "The Name Of This Band is Talking Heads" over this. At least the expanded tracks aren't an emarrassment.
One of the greatest live albums ever........2004-10-23
So, what is the big deal, you ask? Well, picture this. The soundtrack begins with "Psycho Killer," one of the first really big hits for the group. Instead of the entire band being onstage, David Byrne walks out with an acoustic guitar and a boom box. He presses PLAY on the box, which cues a drum program to begin playing. So the first song is just David Byrne singing and strumming his guitar, accompanied by pre-recorded percussion. For the next song, "Heaven," Byrne is joined onstage by bassist Tina Weymouth. Then Chris Frantz's drumset is wheeled out, and the three of them go into "Thank You For Sending Me an Angel." We finally hear some real drumming, not the predictable, computerized beats in "Psycho Killer." The album really begins to come alive. Then they go into "Found a Job," and things get more interesting. Byrne swaps his acoustic guitar for an electric, and lead guitarist Jerry Harrison comes out, meaning we now have two guitars. By the time the fifth track, "Slippery People," is underway, the entire band (including the extra musicians and backup singers) are on the stage, and now things are cooking. What happens over the remaining twelve tracks can only be described as an overload of the senses.
The purpose behind the concert was to provide a unique experience for the concert-goer, to create visual as well as aural art. Some of that sense is lost on the CD listener, but some of it remains. The songs were translated to disk beautifully, so that they still retain just about everything that made them a pleasure to listen to while watching the film. One can almost picture David Byrne running laps around the stage, dancing with the lamp, or wearing the big suit.
The concert resulting in the film and this album was performed shortly after the band released their 1983 album "Speaking in Tongues." So, needless to say, many of the songs you will hear are from that album. And I have to say that for each of them, I prefer the live version to the studio version. Each one of them sounds more vibrant, more full of life when performed on the stage. The improvisation on "Burning Down the House" is as good as it gets. Ditto "This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody)," which is one of the most beautiful things I've heard, and I don't even like love songs. The studio versions lack that extra energy. Their pulse is just too slow. This is never more true for "Life During Wartime," which is actually a song from 1979's "Fear of Music." But anyway, this song displays Byrne's tendency to perfectly mismatch music and lyrics. The pulsating beat of club rock flows beneath what I interpret to be a humourously disturbing tale of a country under martial law. The song should not work as well as it does, and yet somehow, they pull it off. Anyway, after hearing the live version of it, I can no longer listen to the studio version. Also noteworthy is the improvisation on "Crosseyed and Painless." The intro and the extended guitar solos are just the icing on the cake for that one!
If there is a bad song on this album, it would have to be the interlude by the Tom Tom Club (a solo project of Heads drummer Chris Frantz and bassist Tina Weymouth). "Genius of Love" could have been a great song. The instrumentation is very good. Sadly, it's ruined by Frantz's raucous babbling. He's attempting to be random like David Byrne, but tragically, he's not good at it. Other than that, this album is solid gold. It demonstrates the full potential of live music, and sounds amazing while doing it. Whether you're a fan of the Talking Heads or not, this album belongs in your collection.
Great Improvement Over The Original Version.......2004-10-17
The Special Edition is the entire film soundtrack (minus some stage banter and the cut performances of "Cities" and "I Zimbra"). Their imagination made Talking Heads one of the greatest live bands of all time. The songs are mostly from SPEAKING IN TONGUES, but they also include interesting and in some cases superior versions of songs from all of their albums prior to 1983 with the help of the Tom Tom Club.
In addition to STOP MAKING SENSE, I recommend the newly released CD version of THE NAME OF THIS BAND IS TALKING HEADS. Listening to both would map eight years of live performances and barely short of 4 hours of live material.

The great irony of the Louvin Brothers, today considered by many the best of the brother duos, is that they peaked at a time when the form was almost dead. Their vocal sound was as old as the Alabama hills, and they kept alive such archaic tunes as "Knoxville Girl" and "In the Pines." Yet their studio bands were up to date, if not exactly Nashville Sound knockoffs, and much of their material, including "You're Running Wild," was fairly contemporary. Traditionalists or modernists? In the 2 pg. interview with McCrea, he stated his favorite Louvin songs were "You're Learning" (an Every Brothers sound-alike) and "the Great Atomic Power", the better of the two and both on this album. Definitely a good primer of the Louvin's music!
ps--As much McCrea in that interview stated that "Louvin Brothers' covers make me nauseous," "The Great Atomic Power" deserves a makeover (a faster tempo & a fuller musical accompaniment sung by a female duo; myself as one of that duo)--
John McCrea, you have been warned!

Ok, enough of that. Both are masterpieces in their own right, but "I Just Can't Stop It" takes the cake, IMHO. And I've been listening to ska for quite a few decades now...and just came from seeing the Beat (as they're known in England; unfortunately an American band named the Beat had them precursor their name with thier country of origin...) for the 2nd time in 6 months. They played over 2.5 hours straight through, and are at the top of the list of energetic bands I've ever seen. And live, they are much different than they are on record -- both are brilliant, in their own special way. My favorite song off the CD, "Twist & Crawl," which is more new wave/mod meets ska, became an insane dub-fueled monster live.
If you are a fan of music, especially one of the 3rd wave of ska (e.g. Sublime, No Doubt, to name the most famous...and who blended punk rock with ska) and want to know some of the origins of the music, even though Sublime covers Toot's "54-46 Was My Number" and never covers any of the 2nd generation (even looking through my prodigious Sublime bootleg collection), this album is for you. And for those wondering what ska is, this is for you...it is a masterpiece. It's better than any ska anthology you'll find IMHO.
Landmark Ska.......2007-02-23
Quibbles about the British edition aside (only the early American version of the cd has Tears of a Clown and Ranking Full Stop), this record is as socially conscious as it is fun. Ranking and Wakeling were not overly opinionated lads, but they made their points eloquently and with arresting honesty. It is quite often the case, however, that you find yourself singing along to a beautiful harmony, only realizing later on what the lyrics actually say. I only noticed the political overtones of 'Stand Down Margaret' after grooving to it for some two or three years. :)
It's a shame that a group of this caliber splintered after only three albums, but I suppose we should count ourselves lucky to have heard them at all.
Non Stop Fun!.......2006-06-18
Already full of nonstop, infectious boppin' tunes the band's US label added two songs to the original album -- "Rankin' Full Stop," and a cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles' "Tears of a Clown" that had been stand alone singles in the UK. By omitting those songs from this CD reissue the album has been restored to its original running order and, as a previous reviewer noted, becomes the album the way the band intended for it to be heard.
But all of that is really pretty moot because this is still a great, great record with songs like "Best Friend," "Mirror in the Bathroom, "Hands Off She's Mine," and "Wine and Grind/Stand Down Margaret" (ah, the days of the anti-Thatcher/Reagan anthems) that compel you to hit the repeat button on your CD remote over and over.
Ignore the reviewers who don't know the history of this album and get this -- the complete and original version of one of the all time great albums.

This, CD 2 does contain the video for Don't Stop Now, which is really nice. It uses Nick Seymour's album artwork in a really wonderful way.
So, if you are a real fan of the Crowdies, like I am, ahem, then you really should get this single. And of course, CD 1 as well, for that non album track!
