A Little Bit of This, A Little Bit of That............2002-10-30
To be sure, marches are again much in evidence, which, of course, they should be, including the inimitable "showstopper", "Rolling Thunder", by Henry Fillmore, always a great choice to lead off an album and set a mood, Hale Vandercook's "Olevine", Russell Alexander's "Rival Rovers" and "Tropic to Tropic", Fred Jewell's "Gentry's Triumphal" and "Screamer" (refers to the name often given to circus marches), and Karl King's "Purple Pageant" (one of two circus-style marches dedicated to Northwestern University, the other being "Purple Carnival" by Harry Alford).
But there is much more to be found on this CD. The influence of Broadway show tunes is evident in "Fosterettes", the aptly named "Broadway One Step", and "Greatest Show on Earth". "Characteristic" pieces, which evoke a particular ethnic stereotype (wouldn't be considered "correct" in this day and age), include "Jungle Queen", "War March of the Tartars", and "El Condor Pasa". And King's wonderful "Walking Frog" is an excellent example of a ragtime piece.
Henry Fillmore (1881-1956), who is liberally represented throughout this series, is described by no less an authority than Frederick Fennell, the past director of the Eastman Wind Ensemble and current director of the Dallas Wind Symphony, as "the last of the troubadors". He had a wonderful sense of humor, writing under eight different pseudonyms, including Gus Beans and Henrietta Moore. Also, under the name of Harold Bennett, he wrote the most successful band books for school musicians ever published. He led several very successful bands in the Cincinnati area, including doing a series of radio broadcasts in the days before television, and later, after moving to Florida for health reasons, he became involved in organizing better than fifty high school bands, and was affectionately known to Florida school musicians as "Uncle Henry". He was also an avid sports fan, an infamous "party animal", before there was such a phrase, and, even when in poor health, was known to drive his automobile at speeds exceeding 100 mph. In short, he lived life to the fullest!
To sum up, this is another great circus CD.
