Texas quintet Blue October has bounced from Houston-based indie darlings to the majors and back twice since their '98 bow. Yet there's little sense they've compromised much of their eclectic, creatively restless ethos in the bargain on this, their fourth studio album (and second major label stint). In the hands of less ambitious musicians, the personally harrowing, perfectly crafted "Hate Me" would have become template for the entire collection; here it's but the most commercially focused of band leader Justin Furstenfeld's eclectic musical obsessions. His taste for early '80s UK New Wave evinces itself in a fondness for lyrical shadows and fleeting sonic echoes of Richard Butler's P-Furs and Peter Gabriel. But it's in the collection's quieter, more reflective songs ("Let It Go" and "Congratulations" turn on Ryan Delahousaye's signature violin phrases; "X Amount of Words" effortlessly morphs through several intriguing techno conceits; "18th Floor Balcony" bristles with an almost neo-classical elegance) where Blue October sets itself a cut above its post-grunge contenders. -- Jerry McCulleyAlbum Description
The Texan rockers build on their guitar and violin-driven sound, setting their pained-yet-hopeful lyrics to moody-yet-catchy tunes with touches of electronica and piano-laced balladry. Includes the hits "Hate Me" and "Into the Ocean," plus "Drilled a Wire Through My Cheek," "Congratulations" (with Imogen Heap), and more.Customer Reviews:
Curses, Foiled Again.......2007-06-16
And it goes something like this:
"I have to block out thoughts of you, so i don't lose my head
They crawl in like a cockroach leaving babies in my bed
Dropping little reels of tape to remind me that I'm alone
Playing movies in my head that make a porno feel like home
There's a burning in my pride, a nervous bleeding in my brain
An ounce of peace is all I want for you, Will you never call again?
And will you never say that you love me just to put it in my face
And will you never try to reach me, it is I that wanted space"
And then that catchy catchy chorus:
"Hate me today
Hate me tomorrow
Hate me for all the things I didn't do for you
Hate me in ways, yeah ways hard to swallow
Hate me so you can finally see whats good for you"
Anyway, Blue October is from Texas, but you wouldn't know it from their sound. The only thing like Texas about them is that they have a very big sound. It is more alternative rock than anything, but I guess it is not all blues, or country, or Bob Wills and the Texas Playboys.

Once Upon a Theme.......2007-06-08
Foiled is a finely crafted work:the haunting violin on 18th Floor Balcony, the hypnotic guitar work and vocals on She's My Ride Home, the three part vocal on Into the Ocean and it goes on. There is a theme running through the album that belies the eclectic label. Although the hard edge of Drill it, Hate Me and What if We Could are miles from Congratulations' pop chorus and Overweight's unique structure, each song develops the theme of love and madness, cause and effect, bringing the listner to the edge: sometimes granting friendship, sometimes decrying its loss, but redeeming love at the end (the point in 18th Floor Balcony being the last track).
Wonderfully done.

HISTORY FOR SALE - BUY IT !.......2007-05-29
The very personal nature of the lyrics on this album is the kind of stuff a normal person would write only in their private journal and keep to themselves for reflection. Consequently, at times listening to this album does give you the privileged but uneasy feeling that you would get when being made privy to the details of someone's personal life. Nevertheless, Justin is an artist that is willing to make us privy to his 'history', however uncomfortable, painful or personal it may be. Which results in what any great artist in any medium ultimately aspires to achieve; to bring out of oneself something unique, beautiful and meaningful from a personal place which touches others in a profound way. Now, while this material tends to be a bit on the melancholy side you must recognize it for what it is; candid artistic expression, this stuff is NOT contrived. And while the lyrics can be melancholy, they can at the same time be very uplifting. If you've ever seen Blue October perform live you know without question that Justin's music comes from his very heart and soul. Justin's performance and the music is so emotional and powerful that the audience is at times actually moved to tears, and I'm not talking about teenage girls. It is also plain and very nice to see that not just Justin but all of Blue October are very passionate about their music. There really is no other band in America like Blue October, they are an important band, and one we should consider a very welcome alternative to the vast sea of insignificant bands deemed as acceptable listening by the mainstream powers that be. Finally, while lyrically this album may be somewhat avant-garde it is also very accessible and in the end very enjoyable to listen to. DO NOT, I repeat, DO NOT pass this one by.

But this album has some really good content in it. It has alot of "Loner" feel to it. Break-up songs. Make-up songs. This album has alot to it. Hard, soft, and just feel good music. The bad and good in life is all here. But it just is not very well put together. Some songs seem like filler songs to what could have been a 5 star rating.
With songs like "Independently Happy" portraying an medicine for a socially troubled, lonely person. And depressing attidudes found in "Schizophrenia". Many feelings in this album are great. Wheather good or bad. One doesn't exist with the other right?
Great music here.

Long a favorite of U2's original core following, October not only avoids the sophomore slump, but adds an edgy, emotional resonance to the buoyant self-confidence they showed on their debut, Boy. Though producer Steve Lillywhite deserves mention for helping effectively frame the material with production that manages to be both stark and atmospherically murky, this is the music where Bono, Edge, and company first show the potential that would make them superstars. Lacking the sometimes ham-fisted polemics that would mar War, The Joshua Tree, and later works, October has an oft-tortured sense of emotional and philosophical ambivalence that only underscores concerns that range from the crypto-spiritualist yearnings of "Gloria" and "Rejoice" to more anxious moments like "I Fall Down," "I Threw a Brick Through a Window," and "Fire." In retrospect, they may have peaked early. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Essential U2.......2006-10-04
Pressed Leaves and Deadwood.......2006-09-14
The highlights are essential U2. "Gloria" finds the best troubadour qualities of this raw, yet able young band. "Tomorrow" also heralds a build-up they would perfect later, but already beacons what can be termed Christian existentialism. Their Irish heritage laces much of the instrumentation here and in other parts of the album. "I Fall Down," and "I Threw a Brick Through a Window" continue their venue of passion ably. "Rejoice" is nearly frenetic in its devotion. In contrast, the title track is quietly beautiful like few U2 songs are delivered. On the other hand, the rest of the album is a mixed bag. With a bit more time, Bono could have done more than improvise with "Fire" and "With a Shout". "Stranger in a Strange Land" does have a point, but they seem to linger too long on their delivery and destination. "Is That All?" makes us wonder just that for their finale, where they seem to stumble off the stage.
Despite the flaws and misfortunes, U2 still had the energy and focus to put out a fine, if sometimes mixed, effort. With 'War' they would start a run of commercially and artistically perfected and powerful albums that would continue to renovate the landscape of popular music. 'October' is a fine, transitional album that showcases their musical development with results that are unique and often satisfying like no other album.

The rest of this album holds no appeal to me at all. Where most of U2's music has a timeless quality that makes it hard to date, this is very a much an awkward early-Eighties album.

voice. I wish I would have had the chance of seeing them live... and listening to her...
Mary's voice, together with perfect songwriting, makes it the perfect formula for an incredible experience listening to this album.
By far, it's their best album, all songs are unbelievably beautiful, but I have my 3 personal favorites:
1. Bury my lovely - it's a hymn to heaven... it's the best way to describe this song... optimistic, powerful, and Mary's voice in total control.
2. Where you are - beautiful ballad, showing Mary's powerful voice.
3. Return to me - the most perfect and beautiful ballad of the last 20 years... it will touch your heart like no other song before.

The Hunt for Red October and Crimson Tide mark the swan songs of a long-standing genre: the cold-war-theme action thriller (and its subgenre, the nuclear-submarine-threat potboiler). Given the music here, composer Basil Poledouris must have sensed the end was nigh, for he pulls no punches. Poledouris (who seemingly wrote the score to Red Dawn as a warm-up exercise) has created a full-bodied orchestral swashbuckler with a male chorus (singing in Russian, of course) to boot; a modern take on the Erich Korngold/Errol Flynn film sensibility that ably demonstrates there's still life in those traditions. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

Remembering Poledouris.......2006-11-11
The album opens with 'Hymn For Red October', Poledouris's best main title after Conan's. The Russian chant gives this theme its power, although I fought with a couple of friends who were supportive of James Horner's Russian song in the main and end credits of "Red Heat"; but I have always considered Red October to be a great song. There are intimate moments in this album that give us a break from the coming action, and they are better displayed in 'Two Wives', a cue that was never used in the film. Another great moment is 'Ancestral Aid', where the Russian chorus burst in fury, showcasing the scene where the Red October manages to escape from a pursuing torpedo, and later coming to a calm, yet chilling second half. And the action cues are a real treat here: I love the crescendos in the track 'Chopper', a track that truly makes the listener feel he/she is on board a helicopter. 'Nuclear Scam' is also quite impressive if we think that the Russian submarine's crew escapes from a fake nuclear accident. Finally, we have 'Kaboom!', a relentless cue that makes us sweat, feeling that we're being chased by a submarine. In general, this is a good work by the late Basil Poledouris.
The only letdown, however, is the running time of thirty minutes of the whole album, probably because there is not much music in the movie. In fact, as great as it sounds, the track 'Course Two-Five-Zero' is too short to be really appreciated at twenty one seconds. Yet, if you want to appreciate one fine work from this fine composer, who left us recently, "The Hunt For Red October" might be your CD.

Never in my life have I ever purchased more than one album from any given artist. Justin and the boys have graced my ears. I now own 5 of 5 albums. One "Argue with a Tree" a live version of History for Sale and Consent to Treatment combined into one. Had to have it!
I am only sorry that I will have to wait a few years before they come out with a new album. For now I have everything including Foiled... now if I can just get my hands on his Last Wish (5591) albums...
I am and will always remain a faithful fan! -Thank you, Justin! You rock my world!

Live Blue October.......2006-05-20
A live show will keep you buying their music and going to their shows for the rest of your life. They rock, hands down. Justin brings so much of his personal life into his lyrics that you can't help but identify with the pain and struggle he's dealt with. And not only angst ridden songs grace this album; the album features a couple of more upbeat, even "fun" songs, such as Italian Radio and Breakfast After Ten (great break-up song). This live album also includes the hit "Calling You" which was featured on the American Wedding soundtrack.
I have been a fan since my first live show back in the late 90's and they have never let me down. Justin, Jeremy, Ryan, Matt and CB all bring the house down with each show and each song. If you buy this album (and you should!) you must FOR SURE buy "Foiled" to go with it...and "History For Sale." And if you still don't believe that this band rocks, go to VH1 and watch their video "Hate Me." It is climbing the charts in leaps and bounds.
An old H-Town fan!

Beautiful, lush and lyrical, but should be sold with prozac.......2005-12-27
So, while lushly layered and beautifully instrumented, if one actually engages the message of the songs, the net result is quite depressing. And unlike with Toad the Wet Sprocket, which similarly carts an emotionally heavy wagon, there isn't a release through the inherent energy of the music. Similarly nuanced but less emotionally exhausting albums are Wild Colonials' "Fruit of Life," Zero 7's "Simple Things" and Delerium's "Poem".
Happy listening!
Second Project From the Project.......2005-04-24
Favorites on this CD are "Something More Than This," the title cut, "One Dream," and "Adam & Eve."
You can't go wrong with either of the 'Project's two CD's, and in my opinion both are must haves for any CD collection!
A Subtly Textured Tapestry of Hope, Darkness and Yearning.......2005-01-25
Musically, the album manages to be both cohesive and wonderfully diverse. Richly textured with great production and musical depth, the songs range from anthemic, acoustic introspection ("Deep As You Go") to sweeping, lush ballad ("If I Could") to driving, percussion-punctuated rock ("Funeral in His Heart"). "Sunday Morning Yellow Sky" is a stand out track in these regards; driving bass line, sharp guitar strings and a full band to fill in between (and it's hip-swayingly groovy, too). "Something More Than This" features a fluid, rolling piano sound that really builds with the song's themes of ache and hope.
Even more, the music is emminently accessible. Unlike many musical "ar-teests" who seem to think it's their job to create music that's truly work to listen to, OP crafted a very accessible collection of songs with FFI. Whether you're grooving along with the melody or hearing the refrain in your head, the music on this CD was made to be pleasing to your ears (as well as your spirit).
Of course, it's not just OP's music that makes it distinctive. Mary Fahl's voice is in full power here - and I don't mean that she belts it out whenver possible like Celine Dion. Fahl makes full use of her vocal range, as well as being very comfortable singing or even talking quietly. To be sure, her voice soars and swoons, but it's always in service to the song and story, not as a showboat kind of effort. If you've never heard Mary Fahl before, I envy you the joy of hearing her for the first time: she's the brooding pop sister of Trisha Yearwood, someone with a sweet, strong voice that knows how to infuse it with life's sorrow and passion.
Lyrically, FFI is miles ahead of OP's debut. I'd consider the debut album the equivalent of a high school senior's (or perhaps college freshman's) take on poetry and gothic storytelling: you can feel the talent and potential, but it's struggling to breath through the conventions and cliches of the form. With FFI, OP's songwriters really break through. The lyrics are specific, intelligent, literate and meaningful. The album cascades with references to Alice in Wonderland, the 1993 tragedy in Waco, Texas, mid life crisis, the struggle to be a better lover/person, and more. There's a definite undertone of spirituality in the lyrics that's never preachy, always reaching.
And while I DO rate this album with Amazon's highest rating, there are a couple of misfires: tracks 5 and 7. They're not horrible, by any means, but compared to the rest of the album, they're fairly bland and unremarkable. "Johnny" is a tad didactic, while "After the Fall" fails to excite.
But that leaves 9 great songs, a feat by any standard. I can't even pick "stand outs" from the 9 because they're all just incredibly good. Start discovering the richness hidden here - you'll be glad you did.
Postscript: there's a certain amount of irony in that this album is STILL in print, long after Sony deemed OP not commercially viable.

There's a comfortable sense of the familiar to James Taylor's first collection of new songs since 1997's Grammy winner Hourglass; such is the curse of being a decades-spanning cultural icon. But, as on his best work, there's also an almost stealthy sense of musical restlessness that seeps into Taylor's songs here, as he colors some with deft jazz and international influences. The reunion with producer Russ Titelman (they last collaborated on 1976's In the Pocket) seems to have gratifyingly inspired as much gentle reassessment as retrenchment. Longtime Titelman compatriot Ry Cooder guests on the title track, a song whose autumnal comforts fit the Taylor canon and other album tracks like "September Grass," "Baby Buffalo," "My Traveling Star," and "On the Fourth of July" (the story of Taylor's romantic meeting with current wife Kim) like an old slipper. However, "Belfast to Boston" cries for peace in Ireland and elsewhere with some surprising Gaelic flourishes, while "Whenever You're Ready" throws some Brazilian rhythms and jazzy horns into the mix, and Dave Grusin's slick orchestral arrangement turns "Mean Old Man" into an elegant cabaret surprise. A little more of this musical adventure amidst the familiar romantic ballads and paeans to the comfort of home and family--including a gorgeously spare cover of "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas"--certainly wouldn't hurt. --Jerry McCulleyCustomer Reviews:

" October Road " came out at a time when its presence was desperately needed. Amid Britney, Christina and Justin rose a true artist, like a phoenix, here to give the public something to think about. " The Fourth of July", one of Taylor's all-time best songs, provides head and heart food right off the bat.
" Whenever You're Ready" is another great one that rolls more than rocks, but drives home a steady beat. " Caroline I See You" is beautiful, recalling early ballads. The only clunker is " Mean Old Man", and even it has some charm after a few spins.
James Taylor proves that old formulas can result in new sounds. The integrity of his body of work remains in tact.

Great on paper, yet it lacks sparkle.......2006-01-01
It was with much trepidation that I approached October Road. In fact I did not buy it when it first appeared. I waited to hear a friend's copy.
In terms of songwriting, October Road is a great return to form. Sonically it seems a bit closed-in (not a lot of acoustic space apparent), and the production is a bit sparse compared to what we've heard from James in the past.
Still, James sounds a little tired to me. The tempos are mostly slow to middlin', and I don't get a lot of joy from this music compared to say, his "JT" album. Mean Old Man is quietly humorous, and Whenever You're Ready is bouncy enough. Whatever. I still get an underlying sense of sadness or weariness listening to this album, and frankly I'd rather go for something more energizing.
The songcraft and playing are top notch. Your reaction may be different. You couldn't go wrong picking it up used at half price. You can always sell it again if it doesn't please. I don't know if James will ever make another album I can get enthused about, unless it is a live album. James seems to keep improving as a live performer at the same time his studio albums lose their appeal for me.

Since the last song's the weakest it's not a great way to end the album but the amazing songs on the rest of the cd make up for it. It's just too bad "Wolf Moon" wasn't the last track. Anyway the whole ambiance of the entire album is amazing, that's why the cd still gets 5 stars. A really really awesome listen.
Taking a second, haunting listen.......2007-06-12
Now, some 9 years later, I picked it up AGAIN, trying to give it a second whirl. I am not disappointed this time, and I wish I had never gotten rid of it. Sure, the pace is slow and dreary, but the fact that it still scares me is unbelievable. The songs, the lyrics, the vocals, the keyboards, all of it fits the mood. This album is unbelievable and should be heard by anyone who likes music.
The best song, by far, is still "Wolf Moon". Listen to this late at night, alone, and in a car ride through the country and you, too, will get shivers down your spine.

Happy Halloween, and beware the wolves at night..........2006-10-31
Taking the sludgy metal of Black Sabbath and the gothy atmospherics of the Cure, Type O Negative have crafted a distinctive style of doomy goodness that will fulfill all of your vampiric needs. Frontman Pete Steele's booming vocals drive these tracks perfectly, melding beautifully with the thick layers of guitars and keys. Songs like "Love You to Death", "Wolf Moon", and "Red Water" draw you in with their dark, enveloping melodies, with Pete's unique vocals underscoring them like no other vocalist could. But, all of the above are nearly a ray of sunshine compared to the closing track, the huge, epic "Haunted". This song crawls at a snail's pace for its 10-minute length, like some sinister creature emerging from the depths, and likewise Pete's vocals reach their peak of haunting evilness. The line "Oh, how I hate the morning light" is sung in such an impossibly low octave, you'd swear this fellow cannot be human. Purely awesome.
However, this album isn't all sludgy doom. There's plenty of diversity here, while keeping with the dark, sinister feel. "Die with Me" is more wistful and plaintive, while "Be My Druidess" has a vaguely Cure-like feel. The band also lighten things up a bit with the wacky pop tune "My Girlfriend's Girlfriend", and a fun cover of Neil Young's "Cinammon Girl".
Simply put, a Halloween without Type O is not complete. When you party with the ghosts and ghouls tonight, don't forget to put this on.
