Album Description
The Grammy-Award winning band's 1983 album finally makes its compact disc debut in the United States. A Billboard Top 20 album, Listen features four hit singles: "Wishing (I Had a Photograph of You)", "Nightmares", "Transfer Affection", and "(It's Not Me) Talking". Three bonus tracks have been added, including the 80s alternative radio classic, "Committed". All songs are newly digitally remastered and the booklet contains complete lyrics for the first time. Furthermore, journalist Stephen "Spaz" Schnee has compiled new liner notes based on a 2004 interview with Mike and Ali Score.Customer Reviews:

Dreamy and Hypnotic; Outstanding New Wave Rock.......2005-04-18
All right, I'll admit, maybe this band from Liverpool, England, took themselves just a little too seriously in 1983, what with the silly hairstyles and odd fashion sense. Maybe they let the Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental in 1982 go to their hair-do's. And maybe my 4-Star rating might be just a bit inflated, being that I've been an undying fan of AFOS since their first record, which is still today one of my all-time favorite albums. But cast all that aside, and you'll find that this is a darn good album, difficult as that may be for the casual listener to believe. While "Listen" departs from the harder-edged sound of the debut LP, it does find its own groove within a somewhat softer and more techno-fied atmosphere. Don't get me wrong; a few songs still rock pretty good, highlighting the work by amazing lead guitarist Paul Reynolds. But for the most part, the in-your-face guitar licks of the first album are relegated to the middle-ground, or background completely, while the drums and keyboards are pushed forward (could it be that the Score brothers; singer and keyboardist Mike, and drummer Ali, wanted their handiwork to overshadow that of Reynolds and bassist Frank Maudsley? Who knows.). In general, the formula works, in the context of the album as a whole. "Wishing" is brilliant, except for the annoying "buzz" sound heard on every single drum beat of the song (too bad that wasn't eliminated for the remastered release). "Nightmares" reminds one of how it felt to be eight years old and alone in the dark. "Transfer Affection" is a lovely ballad, found also on the Flock's "Best Of" CDs. "What Am I Supposed To Do?" is a fast-tempo tune, but does evoke sadness from the listener, as the song is about a painful breakup. "Electrics", "The Traveler", "Over The Border" and "It's Not Me Talking" are all New Wave-Rock oriented, while "2:30" seems to be really not much of anything; just synth effects that open with what sounds like an earthquake. Only "The Fall" causes me to hit the skip button. It's not all that bad, just a bit too slow and a bit too monotonous, even for the `Gulls. Two of the three bonus tracks are worth the price of the disc alone. The grunge-like "Quicksand" could have been a rock-radio favorite, had the group used it as a single instead of a b-side. It still stands up as one of the Flock's very best rock songs. And the live version of "I Ran" (the b-side of "It's Not Me Talking", at least in the U.S.) manages to capture the raw energy of the original studio recording. For some reason, there are two songs from the original CD and cassette releases that are missing from this reissue; "Rosenmontag" and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin." Both were weird techno-flavored instrumentals, which tells me that AFOS, along with other British synth-rock bands and artists (like Gary Numan), were musical visionaries rather than One Hit Wonders. So if you're reading this you must be thinking about buying the CD. Do it, and also what the title suggests.
IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!!!!.......2005-02-15
Their best........2004-11-18
In fact, I still have their first 3 TAPES--their self-titled debut, "Listen", and "The Story of a Young Heart". I think most AFOS fans would agree that "Listen" was the best of their 4 records. (The 4th album was "Dream Come True", apparently a really bad one.) They sound more mature on it with better songwriting, whether it's the dance groove of "Over the Border", the techno-punk fun of "Electrics", the dreamy vocal of "Nightmares", or the adventurous "Traveller". Flock's sound was/is so unique that one should admit that no one has sounded like them since. A song like "Wishing", with it's clashing synth/guitar/bass chords, still sounds rather exotic 20 years onward. You just don't hear such originality nowadays.
Speaking of tapes, the outside of my original tape of "Listen" says it contains 3 extra songs, "Rosenmontag", "Quicksand", and "The Last Flight of Yuri Gagarin". However, they're not on the tape itself. I have the Jive/RCA version, maybe that's why. The other tapes say Jive/Arista. Anybody know what gives? Of the 3, "Quicksand" is featured on this reissue and is actually one of their 'heavier' moments with the deepest groove of any AFOS song.
Yes, incomplete... although blissful this was re-released!.......2004-11-14
I have waited many years to hear this CD again. I originally had the cassette when first released, but after taking that damn cassette everywhere I went for many years, it faded with the scenery. I have looked for the CD version on ebay and every so often one can find one going for $80 out of some remote village half way around the globe. Now that it is rereleased and two very important tracks were omitted I will still wait for that day I can get the original CD on ebay for $50.
The song Committed was a treat for me since I only had a sound snippet memorized in my head from the one time I had heard the song back in 83. Thanks for the memories.
Anyway, get this CD. It, in my humble opinion, is a work of art. The songs are strong and good. THe Production is very much unique for the time, the reverb fills up your speakers and gives an unmistakeable sense of place while you 'listen'. I wish they would have graced the bottom end of the sound spectrum a bit on the remaster, but then it wouldn't true to how Mike Howlett produced it. I guess I can just use my stereo's EQ.

Product Description
Despite the diversity of styles, a common thread runs through all of Lynns songs: every one of them has an uncanny knack for uplifting the environment. Winnie´s Guitar, more than anything, is a good excuse to lighten up and feel better about ourselves and the world. This, for example, from the features writer of a local women´s journal: "Swimming with dolphins must feel something akin to experiencing the emotional dimension of Lynn Patrick´s music." Yet another reviewer called the album "a project of joyous whimsy, as uplifting and happy as star gazing." That´s because Lynn´s music unpretentiously but unmistakably conveys a sense of soaring freedom -- that sensation in the region of your heart that reminds you of being a child and swinging really, really high, until the chains slackened and you knew you could fly. Winnies Guitar includes ten songs, featuring Lynn on guitar and lead guitar. Joe Scott, lead guitarist for Wind Machine, joins her on three tracks. The E-Town Band´s Chris Engleman plays bass on eight songs, and Lila Sklar, a terrifically talented violinist, adds melodic dimension to track one, "California Zephyr." Gordon Burt, who plays with Denver´s Runaway Express, adds the finishing touches with a lovely mandolin part on "Rosewood" and some tuneful fiddling on "Pickin´A." Original cover art is by nationally acclaimed artist Laura Marshall (Ursula LeGuin´s book illustrator of choice.)Customer Reviews:

This collection of American songs spanning 150 years shows Deborah Voigt, one of the world's leading sopranos, in a new light. She successfully achieves the transition from the larger-than-life operatic stage to the intimate world of song, especially in the more outgoing, dramatic pieces. Voigt enters into each composer's style with complete empathy. Charles Ives was an irrepressible maverick and a stylistic chameleon. Voigt captures the songs' hymn-like simplicity and irreverent rambunctiousness, though her voice is a bit too heavy for them. Leonard Bernstein's jazzy irony also needs more lightness, but the slow love songs are done beautifully. Voigt really comes into her own in Charles Griffes's lush impressionism, evoking the sultriness of Cleopatra and the rhythms of a Spanish dance, and Amy Beach's unabashed effusive romanticism. Composer Ben Moore is a child of our own time, born in 1960. He moves between many styles with natural ease. Set to great English and American poetry, some of his songs were written for Voigt, and she sings them to perfection. The splendid pianist Brian Zeger provides both leadership and support. --Edith EislerCustomer Reviews:
Mixed results.......2006-02-22
And what's with the title of this album? I think she is a classy artist and deserves better than such silly title, her label probably came up with that.
Nice try overall, but I hope Ms Voigt will do more Strauss and Wagner from now on, not more songs like these.

Stellar Soprano Applies Her Considerable Talent to a Lightning-Quick, All-American Repertoire.......2005-11-08
Similar to what countertenor David Daniels did with his 2003 disc with guitarist Craig Ogden, "A Quiet Thing", Voigt and pianist Brian Zeger have created a wide-ranging lyrical repertoire that encompasses significant vocal demands while remaining intimate in setting. In fact, both Daniels and Voigt cover Leonard Bernstein's anti-war lullaby, "So Pretty", with haunting aplomb. She also manages to dance effectively over the "Da-ga-da-ga-dums" of Bernstein's challenging "Piccola serenata". Voigt does wonders with the opening Charles Ives selections by not overplaying the innate sentiment of the tunes, in particular, soaring with the highly dramatic "The Children's Hour" by Longfellow and even covering the churchy warhorse, "At the River", with conviction.
There are eight highly individualistic songs by Ben Moore that stretch Voigt with bountiful results. The standouts of the Moore set are the English sea chantey-like "The Ivy-Wife" by Thomas Hardy, the lushly romantic "I Am in Need of Music" by Elizabeth Bishop; the sweeping "Darkling, I Listen" by John Keats; and the discordant waltz, "Bright Cap and Streamers", by James Joyce. For me, the highpoints of the recording are the last two sets by Charles Tomlinson Griffes and Amy Beach, both of whom tap impressively into Voigt's natural theatricality proven especially by her performances of Griffes's lush "Cleopatra to the Asp" and Bishop's rolling "I Send My Heart Up to Thee".
The one shortcoming of the recording overall is that the briefness of the songs does not really capitalize on Voigt's impressive dramatic capabilities in showcasing changes in characters she would have been allowed in her opera roles. For all the limitations it represents, this is a genuine recital album, and truly transcendent moments are fleeting at best especially given the variety of moods that need to be expressed in lightning-flash strokes. However, taken for the genre it represents, this is a stellar recording to appreciate a singer who is able to do more than Wagner and lose weight.
May have a heart but what good is it if the artistic results are a void?.......2005-10-31

This isn't an album if you are looking for something "fresh and new." The arrangements are traditional, and even newer carols are done in a fairly conservative style. But that said, some of the pieces provide the best orchestration and voice arrangement I have ever heard. This is like the pinnacle of the classic English Christmas carol; clean, precise, glorious and celebratory.

Good coloratura work by Elizabeth Futral.......2007-05-27
The accompanying booklet begins by noting that (page 8) "The voice of the light soprano has enchanted listeners for centuries." Futral's singing is characteristic of this type of voice.
In this era, any coloratura soprano has two challenges: first, to compare with the past generation's astonishingly talented practitioners, well exemplified by Joan Sutherland and Beverly Sill. Second, though, there are some wonderful coloratura sopranos today against whom others will be compared, with Natalie Dessay and Sumi Jo among the most adept. Thus, Futral will almost automatically be compared with such exemplars. I do not think one could say she is the equal of those four just mentioned, but she does not compare badly either.
From the Wikipedia: "In musical notation, the Italian word staccato (literally detached, plural staccatos or staccati) indicates that notes are sounded in a detached and distinctly separate manner, with silence making up the latter part of the time allocated to each note. The rhythm is not affected. Notes identified as staccato should be played or sung abruptly and short." This is worthy of comment, since the "Bell Song" from "Lakme," one of the selections on this CD, features many such notes. Futral sings them well. Her performance in this work is well done (although it is somewhat jarring, again, to hear it sung in English). She begins with a nice high note and a bang up following trill. She displays good agility and features nice technique on staccato notes. Overall, this is well done. Toward the end, which calls for great ornamentation, she seems a bit hesitant at time, but she concludes with a nicely sung high note.
Other examples of her singing. From Handel's "Alcina," she sings "Come take me in your arms." Her voice is a light, standard coloratura voice (although not all coloratura sopranos have such a voice, of course). She displays considerable agility, a decent trill, and good ornamentation. There is a bit of harshness on a high note toward the close, but hardly fatal to the overall positive effect of her singing.
From Donizetti's "Linda di Chamounix," there is "My soul is filled with love for you" (otherwise known as "O luce di quest'anima"). Her version is not too shabby when compared with such greats as Sutherland and Jo. The cabaletta shows off, again, her agile voice. Good staccato high notes. Nice trills and a well nailed final high note.
Then there is the charming "Son vergin vezzosa" from Bellini's "I Puritani," here entitled "A maiden adorning." Again, nice agility, good trills, well done florid singing technique. While there is some harshness in the penultimate high note, overall, well done.
In short, Futral adds to a currently rich supply of coloratura sopranos, and compares well with the best of them.
At Last a Solo Recital on CD.......2005-03-19
Having seen her Cleopatra in LA Opera's GUILIO CESARE and in SF Opera's production of Previn's STREETCAR NAMED DESIRE put her high on the list of important new sopranos. This rather strange recording gives samples of her foray's into all styles from Handel to Previn and does a fine job in capturing the beauty of her phrasing and quality of her seamless soprano voice. It is somewhat distracting to place a first recital recording before the public being sung entirely in English, especially for those who are unfamiliar with Futral's gifts. But credit Chandos with the courage to try something different, something that may introduce new audiences to the opera field.
Surely after the recent successes of Futral performances in the opera houses more recordings will follow. Meanwhile this is a tasty sampler of just how versatile - and special - Elizabeth Futral is. Grady Harp, March 05
An Interesting display.......2003-07-23
This CD has an unusual semi-personal package. Duets, trios and quartets are featured. The title of the program is called Great Operatic Arias which seems rather broad for a soprano recital disc.
Futral sings well as always, however the content seems to lack a bit of intricacy and polish. Each aria, duet etc leaves you wondering whether or not a bit more time could have been put into this. The arias range from baroque to 20th century; covering four languages.
The entire program is performed in English and this is interesting... Although some of the arias just sound plain strange in English! It is a very nice thing to actually completely and instantly understand what is being sung. I was most impressed with the CHANDOS Lucia di Lammermoor. Futral probably gave her best performance on record in that role. She is astonishingly good on that recording. Her mad scene is awesome!
Overall this is a pleasing recording and Futral dazzles her listeners with her crystal clear high notes and vibrant tone. I look forward to more recordings of her. Hopefully she'll have a chance to record some more opera in its original language. I think that its time for a new Puritani or Sonnambula. Wouldn't she be the perfect candidate?

Album Description
Ready to Receive is the second CD from Claudia Russell on Radio Rhythm Records. Russell's debut, Song Food, gained play on more than 150 radio stations across North America, Europe and Australia and earned her Best New Artist honors from WUMB-FM in Boston.Ready To Receive weaves an eclectic tapestry of folk, pop, blues and country into a sound that is distinctively Russell's. Fans of Song Food will find the familiar Russell themes of love, longing and loss, with Russell's expressive vocals right out front and her signature guitar style and husband/partner Bruce Kaplan's mandolin playing right behind her.
Ready To Receive was produced by Russell and Kaplan. It features seven new original songs as well as six inventive interpretations of songs by writers Kyle Johnson, Lori B., Jeff Talmadge, Ted Waterhouse and Bob Dylan.
Rich Warren, host of nationally syndicated radio show, The Midnight Special, wrote in the Fall Issue of Sing Out:
"Singer-songwriter Claudia Russell is a vocalist in the old-fashioned sense. She can really sing. Not only does she have an impressive set of pipes, she interprets songs rather than merely conveying lyrics. She sounds involved with the songs. Ready to Receive is a professional work of strong musicality delivered by a voice superior to most in the crowded field of singer-songwriters."
Daniel Gewertz of the Boston Herald says:
"Sweet-voiced Claudia Russell is recognizably herself on her second independent release, "Ready To Receive," yet the antique, acoustic, elegant string-band approach of "Song Food" has been quite transformed. The new album is sleeker, more electric, less retro, and this time around there are a few modern edges to both the lyrics and the vocals.
There exists on "Ready To Receive" a sense of a life lived, a character explored, a modern west coast womanhood revealed.
The songs of "Ready To Receive" possess an unusually large range of styles and sounds, and even the Russell voice changes course a few times. But the beating heart of the album is constant."
Get Ready To Receive and get ready to hear one of the most distinctive voices on the contemporary folk scene.
Customer Reviews:
A stellar second CD.......2006-02-23
The eclecticism of the disc isn't restricted to the musical styles---it's also wonderfully varied thematically and by mood. The title track is a beautiful, lilting ode to being finally able to accept love. "Galesburg" evokes the desolation of a cold midwestern train station at night and the demise of a relationship. "Oh California" is a romp that details Russell's love/hate relationship with her state of California. "He Ain't Coming Back" is a gritty, bluesy, vivid picture of a hard-living woman whose husband has left her and their daughter to escape the dreary, mundane life at home. The centerpiece of the CD is Russell's raw, fearful paean to her late mother: "Just Like You" chronicles Russell's coming to grips with being the same age her mother was when she died from breast cancer, and honestly catalogues the range of emotions Russell manifests---it's a harmonica-driven wailer whose melodic urgency echoes the racing of the narrator's emotions.
Jeff Talmadge's "Lie to Me" is an irresistible tune that all-too-accurately describes the way we long to hear lies from an object of affection, in the face of the unpleasant truth. "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You" is a compelling Newgrass-y take on Dylan's chestnut. The disc ends with three very different songs: "Bugs" is a moodily charming fantasia of an afternoon in the garden, and even manages to include "ocarina" in its narration. "Miss Fortune," authored by Lori B, is a thumping old-timey piece that could easily be a part of Leon Redbone's repertoire (perhaps in conjuction with the Dresden Dolls), and yet its arrangement can't disguise the darkness at its core. It's a bit of a musical oxymoron---the oompah bass and accordion want you to believe that it's a lark, but the lyrics are another story altogether. Russell's vocals are wonderful here---plaintive, emotive, and spot-on. The CD's coda is "Stars," an absolute gem that Russell co-wrote with Anny Celsi. The melody and tasteful arrangement allow The Voice to demonstrate all its tremble-inducing beauty---vocals that bring a smile to your face while also resonating with our innate sadness---much like the awesome, gelid beauty of a star in a midnight-blue sky. Russell and Kaplan are stars, and if there's any justice anywhere, the rest of a discerning music public will find that out.
