Album Description
On this debut, Inara's skills are at once obvious; her delivery relaxed and confident. She's been steadily working in the LA music scene, playing in bands, and lending her voice to numerous musical projects/film scores (Van Dyke Parks, Idlewild, Danny Elfman, Michael Andrews, Jackson Browne, Phillip Littel). Inara teamed with producer/guitarist/composer Michael Andrews to record "All Rise." Andrews is best known as the score composer of the cult hit "Donnie Darko" but others know him as Elgin Park, the clutch boogaloo/funk guitarist in the Greyboy Allstars. Inara's songs are like little poetic Polaroids, fleeting glimpses into one woman's examination of the world around her. Others are more like impressionist paintings, as though she's just noticed a view and decided to paint it. The production is spare yet lush, elegantly underscoring the presiding moods as they turn. The sound seems to defy context, gracefully blending the nostalgic and the contemporary, the organic and the synthesized into an immensely palatable, and wholly consistent, soundscape all its own. Contributing musicians include Greg Kurstin (Beck, Ben Harper), Greyboy Allstar bassist Chris Stillwell, and former Cake drummer Pete McNeal.
Customer Reviews:
Nice.......2007-05-14
I bought this albumn after hearing the song Pull Things, which I have to say is one of the most beautiful songs I have heard. After listening to the cd many times I have found a few other gems, Fools in Love is really a great song. The lyrics are very good. "Fools in love, gently hold each others hands forever" "Fools in love, well are there any other kind of lovers?" Just really great lyrics, that shows her delicate but humorous journey in the field of love. I like Genius as well. Lashing out a bit at the feel sorry for me crowd, at least thats what I gather. Anyways, you should buy this albumn. Some of george's other stuff is a bit out of my taste, but I find myself listening to find her meanings.
let it build.......2007-04-11
There are about three songs that are unforgettable on this album. The rest form the necessary foliage, and help get you in the mood, for those three. After a while though the whole album becomes an outgrowth of those songs. Excellent entertainment. This is a top 10 of all time for me...and it might still be on the way up...
Wish you were here, Pink Floyd.
Urubamba, Urubamba. (Vinyl only)
Bad Brains, Bad Brains.
Axis Bold as love, Jimmy Hendrix.
The Greatest, Cat Power.
Hootenany, The Replacements.
Our Endless numbered Days, Iron and Wine.
Greatest Hits, Aphrodities Child.
All Rise, Inara George.
Breakthrough, Mary J. Blige.
Catchy, pretty stuff.......2006-06-27
If you like Fiona Apple, Erin McKeown, Leslie Feist, The Essex Green, Keren Ann, then you should probably pick this up. If Cat Power decided she wanted to sound like stereolab it might turn out like this.
Rising Star.......2005-11-23
Inara George never ceases to amaze me. She's definitely on her climb to stardom!
Crystal voice with flowing music.......2005-11-19
I first heard "Mistress" on myspace.com/ascap, and I was completely taken aback. Of course, I bought the album, and I can't get enough of it. I'm a musician myself, so I appreciate each and every note and instrumentation. But aside from that, her lyrics and voice are gorgeous (yet sometimes the enunciation of words aren't quite as clear as her voice), and it's hard to take it off my iPod. So so hard...

A Christmas Celebration: Kathleen Battle.......2007-01-19
what can i say about the best of the best? As always, Miss Battle makes me wonder how anyone else would dare to sing this music after her rendition. A beautiful CD
One of the most beautiful Christmas albums .......2005-11-22
I love Kathleen Battle's voice, and to get such a great collection of beautiful sacred music, it was like a dream come true. She sings many traditional carols like Holy Night, Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, Silent Night, which is possibly my favorite here, you may think you have heard this song so many times, but Kathleen's voice really shines in it. Her English diction is so incredible, you can understand every word, which is not something many opera singers can achieve. Her singing is always so natural and lovely. Many other songs are oustanding on this album, I love the two version of Ave Maria and the Italian song Gesu Bambino. If you are looking for a really beautiful collection of Christmas music, this album is a great choice.
A Christmas Collection For The Ages.......2005-11-13
If there is one performer I miss hearing on a regular basis, it is Kathleen Battle. Anytime I knew that she'd be in a Metropolitan Opera radio broadcast, I knew it would be a performance to remember and more often than not, I was correct. She has a light voice that reaches the upper reregisters with ease and has as a gorgeous sound. She not a regular at many opera houses these days, and in likelihood, if she still did perform on the world's opera stages, we'd be hearing critics say her voice was not what it once was, but thanks to her recorded legacy, her voice will, always have that youthful, energetic sound.
Overall I believe that Ms. Battle performs better in complete opera recordings than recital albums, but most of her recital recordings are of at least good quality and this Christmas collection is outstanding. She handles all of the works with apparent similar ease, but since the recording is so varied, this is a compliment to her skill as a performer. She begins and ends with "O Come All Ye Faithful" where she does a few vocal acrobatics but it's never overdone. Each time I think of what the bets part of the collection is, my mind changes. She brings her skills from the operatic stage in her renditions of "O Holy Night," "Gesu Bambino" (only Pavarotti sings this better, but it's a very close second), and "The Zither Carol" which sounds so much like something that could come from the mouths of Oscar from UN BALLO or Zurbinetta from ARIADNE AUF NAXOS, two of her signature roles. The music from the African American Spirituals tradition and American background are well done and the accompaniment of the Harlem Boys Choir, used to great advantage here adds so much.
With so many Christmas collections from the world of opera available, choosing one can be difficult, but this is one collection that has proven to be a joy for almost fifteen years and will continue to give holiday pleasure for years to come.
Kathleen Battle, My Madam Christmas.......2004-12-28
I probably have 50 Christmas albums. I love many of them. This is my favorite. Leaves me astounded and breathless every time I enjoy it.
Pure Joy.......2003-12-07
In a world where disturbing things are all too common, Christian scripture guides us to dwell on that which is lovely. Kathleen Battle's blessed voice is most certainly one of those lovely things.
I bought this CD in the early 1990's, and I am here to buy it again because I have worn out the original with scratches, etc. I only listen to it during the Christmas season, but I enjoy it enough to hear it all year.
The 'Christmas Celebration' CD should be enough to convince you to also purchase Kathleen's 'A Carnegie Hall Christmas Concert'. Ms. Battle's wonderful soprano voice is joined by that of the mezzo-soprano Frederica von Stade, and the blending is more than memorable. There are a couple of songs which are on both CD's, but you'll want to hear both. In fact, the video of the PBS special is also available, and I recommend buying all three. You won't regret it.
Some of my favorite selections from 'Christmas Celebration' include 'Bring a Torch, Jeannette, Isabelle' and 'Fum, Fum, Fum', both of which are from a culture different from my own. I found such glimpses into unfamiliar favorites to enhance my own enjoyment of the Christmas season, as long as all of my traditional American favorites were included. They were. "I Wonder As I Wander" and "Oh Come, All Ye Faithful" are there among the other favorites.
This CD's music is the kind that sets a wonderful Christmas mood. It can establish memories that say "Christmas" in the memories of children for life. Along with other classics like 'A Charlie Brown Christmas' and 'The Nutcraker' (from your favorite orchesta) and George Winston's 'December' and a few others, you will slowly be able to assemble a Christmas music library that will stay with you for life.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful sampler of Dowland's music.......2007-03-25
An excellent sampler of Dowland's repertoire. The Rose Consort of Viols plays wonderfully and are well supported by a warm and immediate recording. I have spent many hours enjoying this album. Naxos strikes gold once again. Highly recommended!
A great introduction to Dowlandýs and renaissance music.......2000-09-18
If you are a classic or pop fan (or both), and you are not familiar with early music, buy this CD. After you will become addicted to it (as I had) you will rush to buy other CDs of this composer and period (as I did). It contains a balanced repertoire of galliards and other viols' music, songs and lute pieces, and all possible combinations of them. While not making any allowance for popularity, it does contain several timeless pieces that will nail you from first listening (try "lasso vita mia", for example), and the other pieces will get under your skin after several more. The sound of the Rose Consort of Viols is amazingly warm, makes you wonder why classical composers ever stopped writing for these instruments. Dowland's music is beautifully polyphonic, yet it never quits being melodious and lyrical. In fact, for pop fans it might be very enjoyable to discover Bach in a natural way by starting with Dowland, and not the other way around. This CD is not perfect: I would like my galliards with a bit more swing to them, and perhaps this is why this CD seems to over-emphasize the melancholic side of Dowland. Overall, however, this one is still closer to five stars than four, in the disc library of any music fan.

Here's a disc of 19 familiar and unfamiliar Kurt Weill songs arranged for dance band and played by an expert group of specialists in Roaring Twenties band music. They're led by singer-conductor-composer H.K. Gruber, whose previous recordings include Weill's Die Dreigroschenoper. The result is a start-to-finish delight. From the first notes, you're beamed back in time to one of those sleek transatlantic passenger liners, sitting in an art deco ballroom watching elegant couples in tuxedos and ball-gowns swirl by while the band plays hits from Weill's German and Broadway triumphs. Sure, the venom is leached from the originals, but who needs agitprop when you're on a dance floor? The arrangements are by a variety of hands, hired by Weill's European and American publishers with his approval to get more mileage from his musical theater works. They're delightfully square rhythmically and formulaic in transferring Weill's music to conventional dance bands, but the music still holds up and is fun to hear in its new clothes. A special treat is the eight tracks with Max Raabe, whose light tenor and falsetto singing preserve the spirit of Weill's songs, as well as perfectly mimic the boy band singers of times gone by. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
SAIL ON, KURT!.......2006-04-23
I wouldn't take offence here oh, Weill purists! These reconstructions are charming and harmonically reverent to their originals, more than could be said for many versions of the Weill Songbook through the decades, including Lou Reed's friendly `adaptation' of the September Song's chord progression and melodic line!
Shoenberg and Webern expressed their disdain of Weill's music; curiously, Arnold had also disclosed a secret wish of having his own audiences walk back home "whistling his tunes", oh, don't ask why... You can certainly whistle, hum and sway your partner now, as the transatlantic's bouncy dancehall sails on just as Kurt, Lotte and the lot of them did when escaping the lethal hounds of early 30s Berlin.... the-next-little-dollar bound.
Not at All Vile Weill.......2001-08-13
The ever versatile HK Gruber has done it again digging up these gorgeous dance arrangements for Weill's music--proving, if anything, Weill's versatility. Anyone familiar with the Capriccio historical Weill recordings will be aware of the long tradition of dance bands taking Weill's music as the lead for dance music or pop music incarnations (all the way up through the more obvious appropriations familiar to Americans: Mack the Knife and September Song). Hardly MUZAK arrangements (listen to the delicate violin in track 17's "What Good Would the Moon Be" to hear what I mean), this generous helping of 19 songs offers a chance to see Weill through a delightfully different but entirely compatible lens. Max Raabe provides the ideal vocal compliment on 8 of the tracks, his tenor floating effortlessly into his head voice suggesting a "period" sound reminiscent of Bing Crosby. The import title for this disc is "Charming Weill," and that modest adjective expresses the least of its virtues.
ELEVATOR MUSIC.......2001-05-23
This is a very strange CD: why would anyone want to take the quirky rhythms and melodies of the great Kurt Weill and "tame" them into dance arrangements? Certainly one has listened to (& even perhaps admired) dance arrangements of composers from Victor Herbert to Cole Porter to Jerry Herman, but these are all, if you will, main stream composers-- men whose music sounds good in original Broadway or Hollywood arrangements and just as good (or almost as good) as played by a dance band...think "Begin The Beguine" as done by Fred Astaire on film or "Begin The Beguine" done by Jo Stafford with the Paul Weston Orchestra.
But Weill was an innovator: a man who can still be listened to experiencing the thrill of something fresh and new. One immediately thinks of his collaborations with Bertolt Brecht in Germany: "Threepenny Opera" and "The Rise & Fall Of The City of Mahagonny" or "The Seven Deadly Sins", etc. his American opera, "Street Scene" with Langston Hughes or his American musical plays: "One Touch of Venus" with Ogden Nash or "Love Life" with Alan Jay Lerner, etc. The songs on this CD all deserve great recordings from the "Alabama Song" to "September Song" but they turn into a kind of flattened elevator music instead of having fresh interpretations or even more traditional ones. What happens is that the longing in "What Good Would the Moon Be" and the romance of "Speak Low" and the raucousness of "Bilbao Song" are all much too similar and much too easy.
It's a little weird to think of husbands whispering to their wives," Listen, honey, they're playing 'As You Make Your Bed' from "Mahagonny".........let's fox trot!"

Blade Runner, Missiles, and Working 9-5.......2006-08-29
I am now 32 and first heard NR in skate videos in the late 80's. I owned the Homestead versions of "Throb, Throb" and "All Rise" as well as the re-issued "Jettison" and "Understand". I ultimately came to the conclusion that while this band had some great anthems, such as "Home of the Brave" and "Never Follow", they were a little too weird for my taste, and we had to part ways. It's only been recently that I have begun to reevaluate my musical taste (ditching most of the insipid "punk" that I clung to for years) and rediscovered some things which I had once let slip through my fingers. In the process I have come back to NR with a fresh outlook, have begun to understand what they were about, and have come to see that this is a great American band, regardless of genre.
This is a band with a deep mythology, they inspire great loyalty and nostalgia, and carry their own culture. Yeah, they were a "punk" band, but "punk" in the truest since. They didn't dress like morons, or adhere to a bunch of hollow slogans, these were salt of the earth guys, who I'm sure felt deeply and loved hard and it shows in their music. There was no one songwriter, all contributed, yet there is a central theme and identity to the band. I didn't get it as a kid; now that I've lived a little, I see what they're about. There's a sense of loss and longing in there songs, a working class sensibility (again, in the purest sense of the word "working class", I'm not throwing that around lightly) and a certain despair at society, but with great heart and a hope still there. There's also something vaguely traditional about the these guys' vibe, very midwest and hard to put into words, but if you understand what I'm talking about, no explanation is needed. There is also a thread of sci-fi that runs through their work, as well as a bit of militarism. When it all comes together, it's just right, but it took me almost 20 yrs to get it.
Ahhh... the old school..........2004-03-21
This one brings back the memories! Me and the boys headin down to the "Riv" (the Riviera) to see Raygun play... skankin in the pit... plastic rayguns falling from the cieling... the good old days... This album is one of the quinticential albums of the 80's Chicago punk scene, along with Big Black and The Jesus Lizard. An absolute must have!
Classic Album.......2003-12-27
This has to be N.R. best, hands down. There is only one clucker in the bunch, "Mr Gridlock", and that is only half bad. Each is great to sing along with and to blow out your speakers and yr eardrums too. Why are you waiting, buy it. You know you want too.
Raygun's best!.......2002-06-27
This is, without a doubt, Naked Raygun's best release. This is the first album to feature the "classic" Raygun line up of Pezzati/Haggerty/Kedzy/Spicer. From beginning to end, every song is great. The bonus tracks are "Slim", the b-side to the group's legendary "Vanilla Blue" single and tribute to actor Slim Pickens, and "Rocks Of Sweden", and song Raygun covered that was originally written by Pierre Kezdy for his old band, Trial By Fire. This is classic Chicago punk rock. If you're looking to get into Naked Raygun, start here.
How the midwest was won.......2002-06-06
In the early 80's, like many large cities, Chicago had a punk scene. bands like Big Black, Screeching Weasel, The Jesus Lizard, and of Course, Naked Raygun. Four guys from Chicago, Ill. with new dreams that they were gonna make real(pun intended). With Jeff Pezati on vox, Pierre Kezedy on bass, Eric Spicer on drums and tools, and of course John Haggerty on guitar, they crafted a sound that struck a balance between the English punk of the Buzzcocks and the industrial noise of Chicago heroes Big Black(in which lead singer Jeff Pezati played bass in; on a side note, producer Steve Albini was in that band too). This 1985 album was a strong point for the band, featuring the moving, anthemic opener "Home Of The Brave". The album then goes in the mambo meets machine rhythms of "Dog At Large" strangely, no lyrics listed in the CD booklet. The semi-folky, semi-punky love song "Knock Me Down" follows, but doesn't really connect. The album then goes in the Chicago-blues influenced rocker "Mr. Gridlock", which features some power drill sounds in the intro courtesy of drummer Eric Spicer(it was hard not to be influenced by the city's blues scene, even if you were a punk, The Jesus Lizard display this influence blatantly on their 1991 albums, Goat). "The Strip" follows after an electronic swish, a kind of hardcore punk meets bar-band song about strip clubs and male bonding. "I Remember" is a bittersweet recollection of life and it's trials, while "Those Who Move" is (I think) about the fear of change. "Backlash Jack".....well I don't know what that song's about, it kinda speaks for itself. Sample lyric: "Backlash Jack...oh waht happened to me....whoa oh." "The Envelope" comes next....it reminds me of the movie "Office Space." The CD version has a tribute to comic legend Slim Pickens, which is mildly funny, I guess. "The Peacemaker" is blatant nod to Big Black, except more machine-like and less melodramatic. "New Dreams", written by Big Black member Santiago Durango, was written for singer Jeff Pezati's old band Trial By Fire. An okay song at best, but not bad either. Overall, a great album. standouts include , "Home Of The Brave", "Dog At Large", "Mr. Gridlock", "The Strip", "The Envelope", and "Backlash Jack." If you don't have this album...bow your head in shame.

nexus.......2007-01-10
wynton marsalis represents a nexus or, as some would say, signifies a nexus in jazz. when he came on the scene, the recording scene, as a leader in the 70s, jazz had gone in a lot of directions, rock fusion, a soft keening lullaby jazz, jazzy rhythm and blues, and a jazz form more classical than jazz.
marsalis stuck to a traditional jazz idiom, strongly influenced by louis armstrong, while `eschewing` (a word i really dislike using) avant garde jazz, which didn't make him very popular with a lot of folk who believed he was stagnating jazz.
and then there was his classical training, which did not intrude, though many suspected that it did.
all rise is what marsalis does best, it is marsalis at his best, a sophisicated jazz symphony utilizing a symphonic orchestra to augment jazz. usually when composers write a jazz symphony, jazz gets short shrift, and the listener has to pick out of the composition pieces of jazz. not in the case of all rise. this is probably the first real jazz symphony ever written.
anyone serious about jazz, whether they like the musical personality of wynton marsalis or not, should own a copy of all rise.
Best new music as of late.......2005-06-06
This is fresh and new and combines many different elements
"All Rise" is new century's first musical triumph.......2002-12-29
Stanley Crouch said it best: if the twentieth century, with first the telegraph, then the telephone, and finally the internet, was about communication; then, the twenty-first century will be about integration.
Wynton Marsalis is that rare breed, a cultural beacon who encapsulates the American spirit of diversity and creativity. Here, in "All Rise", we get maybe his finest achievment to date, a soaring composition integrating multiple genres to give us something truly new and contemporary. You have to look no further than the linear notes to know that Marsalis work is staggering-he somehow melds three choirs along with one of the world's greatest symphonies and his very own Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra to produce something polished and homogenous.
The result is a twelve movement dialogue concerning the the jubilation, the fall, and the rebirth of the human spirit. Most amazing is the attention to detail in regards to the orchestration: pay heed to the balance and sensitivity from such a large and diverse group of musicians sharing the stage. "All Rise" is the next step in American music. Into the new century, Wynton Marsalis is the leader.
A New Genre Evolves.......2002-12-17
Wynton and the whole Marsalis family are a gift to the world of music. Striving to educate every step of the way, All Rise is a new voice in the 21st Century. Combining styles from Swing to Classical Settings to Gospel chants to lush horn harmonies, the calibre of contempory classical music just leaped up a couple notches.
While listening to music, I use as a gauge what kind of mood would I have to be in to listen to this: to crave hearing it. Lots of contemporary music does reflect our times: disconnected; disconcerting; disharmonious. But why would we ever want to re-inforce these feelings? If music soothes the savage beast, save me from modern music. Until now.
500 years from now, when teachers are teaching about music from the turn of the century, Wynton Marsalis will be heeded as a giant in many categories: Jazz, Classical, Composition.
All Rise has made me stand up and want for more.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful.......2007-04-22
I must confess I am unfamiliar with Copland's "The Tender Land" except for this reissue, which I find to be absolutely magnificent. I realize this is a truncated performance, eliminating what I assume to be a fair amount of spoken dialogue. But I don't care. What is presented here is simply one of the finest American compositions - forget American - one of the finest compositions of the 20th century. Period.
Pure joy.......2005-07-29
The recording of Copland's The Tender Land is alone worth getting this disc. The rest of the vocal works are just a bonus, a very good bonus! Copland directs a definitive account of his opera, and in this compressed version leaves out all the spoken parts of the full length opera, no doubt depriving us of a lot of good music but on the other hand giving listeners a very concise version that is even stronger musically (although dramatically a little lacking in logic because of the missing parts - for example without knowing of the confrontation during the party scene you would find the boys' departure the next morning puzzling, and the CD notes does not elaborate on the plot, which is about the only negative thing you can say about this set). Listening to the opera in this abridged version gives you the feeling of one hit after another, there is not a single weak point in the score and Copland has a gift for word-setting that can turn clumsy texts such as "girls come and go, some are good, some are not so good" into goosebumps stuff (a lovely dedication to Laurie sung by Grandpa). Other high points include the stunning transformation of the traditional Walls of Zion into the quartet piece The Promise Of Living and a rollicking Party Scene, which contains the best in Copland's clever orchestration and rythmic vitality - it seems all of the composers best traits have all come together in this work. Martin's Act 2 Song 'Laurie...You Know, Laurie' is a rare gem or an aria and beautifully sung. Other hidden gems include the comical 'We've Been North'. The cast is impeccable and the entire performance is flawless. Add to that one of those scores that simply win you over from start to finish, and you can't but fall in love with this music. I once thought that nothing could better Appalachian Spring but that was before I discovered this neglected work.
Copland's vocal work.......2002-08-08
And so on this third set of the celebration of Aaron Copland's music, all attention is on his vocal work including the opera, "The Tender Land".
I can't completely explain why I give this five stars after giving the first two sets four stars each. This is just the way the opera, in particular, strikes me. I'm no great opera fan, and to my knowledge, America just has not yet proved itself in the operatic field although it's tried. It will take time, but I do see Copland's work as someday being considered the best example of American opera. This is all subjective opinion, obviously, and I'm sure there are those more knowledgeable who will disagree. So be it.
All in all, these three sets will give you a complete overview of one of America's most important composers.
