I originally was buying this CD for a friend of mine as a Christmas present. Then I decided to order one for me also. We both like Cher. We were neither one disappointed. Cher is one of a kind.

I will be writing a review on the legendary brilliant masterpiece compilation album entitled "IF I COULD TURN BACK TIME, CHER'S GREATEST HITS" by one of the greatest female performers of ALL-TIME, I talking about the legendary and ALWAYS beautiful, CHER! This compilation was originally released in 1999 on CD on the Geffen Records label distributed by Universal Music & Video Distribution Inc. The matrix or ID number is INTD-90379. As always, if I hear any new additional information concerning this legendary compilation album, I will edit this review immediately so that you the consumer will get the best informative and most accurate review possible.

WOW! What can I say about this legendary compilation album and the legendary icon that recorded them all those years ago that hasn't already been said? I have mentioned and reviewed many of the great female performers in Rock n' Roll history but I must apologize deeply for not mentioning this beautiful entertainer and icon. She was born Cherilyn Sarkisian La Piere on 20 May 1946! When she met Salatore Phillip Bono (AKA Sonny Bono) in the early 60's who was 11 years older than her, BOTH their lives would be changed forever and would NEVER be the same again! Their show biz names would be changed to Sonny and Cher! And as the saying goes, "AND THE REST IS ROCK N' ROLL HISTORY!" It wasn't until the early 70's that Sonny realized the full talent and potential of Cher and did not want to hold her back! Her voice sounded so rough and husky yet so beautiful! It would also be during the early 70's that Cher would begin on what would become an extremely successful solo career. When Cher's divorce from Sonny finalized in the early to mid 70's, it would be time for Cher to devote herself full time into her solo career! It would also be during this time that CHER would beautifully blossom into one of the GREATEST FEMALE PERFORMERS OF ALL-TIME! CHER would also blossom into one of the GREATEST FEMALE ACTRESSES OF ALL-TIME! This compilation album is a true testament of the many great contributions and achievements that CHER has given us! THIS IS CHER AT HER ABSOLUTE BEST! THIS LEGENDARY COMPILATION ALBUM IS HER STORY! In my opinion, This is ONE GREAT COMPILATION ALBUM! Every single song track is outstanding!

This collection would not be complete without CHER'S TRADEMARK SONG WITH THE MAN THAT DISCOVERED HER, Sonny Bono! I love this song so dearly! You can actually feel their love for each other in this legendary song!) Two songs deserve to be honorably mentioned and added to this collection, "Believe" and "Strong Enough" from 1998. These two songs also define why CHER is one of the greatest female performers and entertainers of ALL-TIME! Overall, this is one hell of a great compilation album! Every single song track in this compilation album is nothing less than outstanding and brilliant!

As you can see, this is definitely a great treasure album worth purchasing that he or she should definitely own as a valuable and important part of his or her own personal music collection. This priceless gem will definitely be around to be enjoyed and cherished for many more years to come, NOW AND FOREVER!

In closing, The Legend of CHER has continued to grow and entertain us to this very day! What I will ALWAYS REMEMBER about Sonny and Cher is their charisma! They were BOTH very EXTREMELY charismatic individuals! Nothing would be more evident then Sonny and Cher's last public appearance and brief historic reunion on The David Letterman Show in the late 80's! For one last time and for a brief moment, they were Sonny and Cher once again! Believe it or not, I actually cried when I saw that performance! It was great seeing them sing "I Got You Babe," the song that gave Sonny and Cher their existence and had so much power and meaning for them both! Sadly, We would all lose Sonny Bono in a fatal sking accident on 5 January 1998 in the Reno, Nevada mountains! Cher's Eulogy speech at his funeral pretty much says it all! At the same time, CHER would release her RETURN album (I NEVER USE COMEBACK IN REFERENCE TO HER!) "BELIEVE" in 1998! This album singlehandedly made CHER a force to be reckened with in the 90's and that she is here to stay! I will always love CHER! Here's to you CHER! Keep persevering! R.I.P. Sonny Bono 1935-1998. If anyone ever needed a collection spanning all phases of her long career, it has to be the Dark Lady herself, who's made more "comebacks" than Shirley MacLaine...and Cher's are actually "on record". Hear the husky voiced quick-change artist in her role as: Sonny's Queen ("I Got You Babe", natch), Tall Tale Telling Queen ("Half Breed", "Dark Lady", the untouchable "Gypsies, Tramps and Thieves"), Disco Queen ("Take Me Home"), and Late 80's Comeback Queen ("Just Like Jesse James", the aptly titled "If I Could Turn Back Time"). Thankfully omitted are Cher's Rock Queen phase (Oh?...Missed that one?) and Electro-Dance Queen phase (Next time, leave the synthesized vocals and canned backbeat to Britney; you're above it, darling). It woulda been nice if a few more "Sonny and..." chestnuts had been favored over such dreck as a Bon Jovi-assisted remake of her own "Bang Bang", and lyrics should have been included (ever notice Cher's mumbly-mouthed delivery is just a tad hard to understand sometimes?). But heck, it just wouldn't be Cher if she didn't need a little "overhauling". Now HERE'S an idea! How 'bout the WORST of Cher, featuring her duets with Gregg Allman and Meat Loaf, her early "I Love You Ringo" single, recorded as Bonnie Jo Mason, her work as leader of rock act Black Rose...PLEASE!! Somebody STOP me before I mention her post-"Believe" rehashes!!!

Everyone's favourite comedy kiddie-fiddler really pulled out all the stops on this single. This could well be the worst song ever written, a shameless rip-off of Unchained Melody, you wonder if maybe Kelly is taking the p**s, because it's SO bad, so cringe-worthy, you're half expecting it to turn up on the sequel to Team America.

But, no. He's being serious, and for every "Ooooooh" garbled sound effect he gives, every meaningful look he gives to the camera in the vomit-inducing video, you just know he's thinking "man, I gotta score me some jail-bait tonight".

Awful, awful, awful. Burn every copy you see.

Very nice song!!!.......2003-01-20

I don't remember when I first heard this song, but I do remember the time when it happened. I had just left my 4 month girlfriend to go live in another state with my parents...I really had no control of the separation.
Well, back to the song...I'd say it's a really smooth, uplifting & could say, sad song. Makes you think about a lot of things when it refers to your significant other.
I bought the cd right away and listened to it for hours.
I do recommend it if you like R Kelly and if you are into "slow jams" and R&B.

As one of the leaders of an exciting new generation of countertenors, Brian Asawa benefits not only from his distinctive voice, but also from his record label's publicity machine, which has made his name and his first two recordings strongly recognized by critics and listeners. Asawa's success at the Metropolitan Opera Auditions in 1991 and his many opera performances in the United States and abroad certainly haven't hurt his career. The voice we hear is unquestionably pretty and technically refined, but its throaty, dark timbre sounds more like the efforts of a man trying to sound like a woman. He just doesn't have that uniquely male countertenor quality exemplified by three of Asawa's more engaging colleagues--Andreas Scholl, David Daniels, and Daniel Taylor. That's not to say that these performances of some of the 16th century's loveliest songs are not eminently listenable and occasionally sublime. Asawa's agile voice projects a strong character coupled with an effortless delivery that will appeal to many listeners. He has an annoying habit, however, of singing slightly behind the beat and gradually leaning into longer-held notes. --David Vernier

I've really tried to like Brian Osawa but when I hear this CD, it sounds to me like he's faking his way through the songs, though I doubt he in fact is. It's passionless.Thankfully I bought this CD used for only $9.99 CDN. Regretably, I will likely be selling it back to the used CD store from which it came. Daniel Taylor and James Bowman's Love Bade me Welcome would be a much better selection, i bought it new and its worth every cent!

Sorry, but this self-involved, primping prissy, gen-x "amerrican" version of lute song is a far cry from what I would have hoped to have heard from this supposed "promising" artist. Pretty voice sings pretty songs, but it's pretty mediocre..........1999-07-04

This album of 16th century songs was VERY highly recommended to me by a store clerk at my local music retailer. I did not preview the album before buying it, but was intrigued by the seeming popular nature of the albums production and promotion. As a 20th centuruy composer and performer, I have dealt extensively with the human voice, in all it's many guises and forms. Asawa's voice has a sweet and fairly clean alto character, but the desired strenth and passion of the counter tenor labeling is obviously lacking. I do not doubt that future albums, perhaps featuring a more complex instrumentation and format will show that Mr. Asawa's voice can be something more than a young alto with an overindulgent rubato complex. The album is not the worst I have heard utilizing "non-traditional" male voices, but the clarity of line and sensitivity needed to convey emotion in these songs is something that perhaps is better left to a more tenured voice. I am ooking forward to seeing what the future brings us from Mr. Asawa, but I do hope he will be braver with the timbres and colors in his voice. It is truly a shame not to let the emotive quality of the counter tenor voice lead the way over "technical" purity.

When you start the CD and sit back you will literally think you have died and gone to heaven! Brian Asawa is heaven on Earth!

If you have not heard anything from Brian, you are in for an extraordinary treat. Brian's voice is an incredible gift that every person should be exposed to. "The Dark is My Delight" is a wonderful display of Brian's range and vocal gifts. A collection of mostly 14th Century lute songs, it is a perfect subject for Brian's unique voice. "Come Again, Sweet Love" is a perfect opening song as it gives you his full range and style. In the beginning you cannot believe that this sweet, melodious voice can be coming from a human, muchless a male. You'll be thinking that throughout this wonderful CD.

There are few CDs that are so extraordinary but then again this is Brian's first CD. EVERYONE should listen and expose themselves to Brian Asawa's talents. He can only be looked upon as a rising countertenor star soon to be at the same level as the "great tenors!" I am not exaggerating. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! There is nothing more I can say!

Brian Asawa is simply heaven on Earth! Nothing else can describe that wonderous voice of his. You literally feel like you have died and are hearing the angels welcome you to their kingdom. When you listen to the CD you'll understand!

The compilation of songs here are an excellent line-up for Brian. It allows him to, in a sense, tell you stories with excellent lute accompaniment. "Come Again, Sweet Love" was an excellent choice to lead off the CD as it showcases the extraordinary abilities of Brian. His sweet and melodic voice almost transports you back to the late 1500s when this song was written. In fact, you will probably get that feeling with every song on this CD but it is to Brian's abilities that we credit this.

There are very few CDs that I can/do recommend so highly. Brian Asawa is a rising star of countertenors to the same level as the "great tenors." I do not exaggerate when I say this. He has a vocal gift that must be shared with the world and the more people that hear him the better THEY are for it. FIVE STARS and TWO THUMBS UP!!! What more can I say!!!
