If one's notion of "world music" promises a touch of the exotic and indigenous, often overlooked is the fact that the influence of western pop music has seeped into every corner of the globe, creating a hybrid that's often more than merely the sum of its influences. Theater vet Brightman steps into that pan-cultural hall of mirrors here, wedding her fascination with the music and rhythms of the "forbidden places" (the title's Arabic meaning) of the Middle East to her own oft ethereal vocal charms and rock-solid sense of drama. And if the diva's equally sound crossover sensibilities (and that of longtime producer Frank Peterson) sometimes mire it in familiar world-beat pastiche, Brightman's charmed muse manages some transcendent moments nonetheless. Her musical borrowings (Borodin for the title track; Puccini's *Madame Butterfly* for "It's a Beautiful Day") are as compelling as her choice of collaborators: classical violin star Nigel Kennedy and Iraqi vocalist Kadim Al Sahir add compelling touches to the weary timeliness of "The War is Over." The musical influences range from Europe across the Mediterranean and as far East as the Indian roots of "Bollywood" composer A.R. Rahman's "The Journey Home" and Brightman's own "You Take My Breath Away" to evocative recastings of the emblematic standards "Stranger in Paradise" and Louis Armstrong's "What a Wonderful World," while ex-Killing Joke keyboardist Jaz Coleman provides the savory East-meets-West orchestrations that ensure Brightman's star turns the seamless foundations they deserve. --Jerry McCulley

As usual a quick and effecient service ,especially for people who live abroad.Keep up the excellent work John Williams.
New to Sarah Brightman.......2007-03-12
I'm very new to Sarah brightman's music and I enjoy this CD. I think she has an amazing voice. Very talented young woman and this cd was very relaxing and joyful to listen to. I like to learn and heard more from Sarah Brightman.
Stranger in Paradise - More Like Stranger in a Lost Cause.......2006-12-30
I'm not throughly pleased with this album! This CD is only good if you know how to dance in a Middle-Easters fashion. About half of each track is dominated by all orchestrations and no Sarah. Plus, Pop-Sarah isn't really for me. I much prefer the Classical-Sarah. Some of the tracks are okay, like "Harem", "The Journey Home", "Beautiful", and "Stranger in Paradise". Really, this is a good CD for your collection, but I wouldn't listen to it on a 24/7 basis.
No voice like hers in the world.......2006-10-01
I own this cd. I saw her in person at the "Harem" concert. Never had I heard or seen any voice like this. What a performer, best concert I'd ever seen. Beautiful voice, I can never get enough of Sarah Brightman's music. It is so comforting at times. I have all her music and this cd makes you wonder, how can she top this? Thank you Sarah Brightman for giving us your beautiful gift of music.
Brilliant Brightman, Her best CD........2006-09-18
Sarah is just the best, she can hit any note and her individuality shines on this CD. She sings "The Journey Home" from the musical Bombay Dreams and her voice just soars. "Harem", "Mysterious Ways" and "You Take My Breah Away" are songs that take me to dreamland. Amazing! A master piece!

BEST CD I OWN!.......2007-05-13
This is by far my favorite Sarah Brightman Cd. Although it is probably her most pop oriented cd, it totally rocks! Most of the songs have a Middle Eastern Edge to them and are awesome to blast in the car! Make sure to try to get the version with either the bonus Dvd or the french tracks!
FIVE STARS!
not the best.......2007-04-12
I agree with "music fan" about this CD. Eden is a good album, and she's a good artist. But either this album was poorly produced or something, because this does not show her best. I wouldn't classify this as world music at all, because the instruments aren't used and it's more classical pop; if that's a genre. It seemed rambly to me with many of the songs sounding similar and lacking originality. I love her, she's unique in her genre. But she really shines as a classicist, with Classics, her work by Andrew Lloyd Webber (who she married) and operatic albums. This is what she's best at, so her collaborations on Eden and La Luna, which are classical in nature but still allowed her to branch out musically, turned out good. I have a lot of her albums, but I wouldn't buy this one. It's more something to listen to once. A few of the songs are good, the album isn't terrible, but it's not very good.
Excellent CD/DVD set.......2007-03-31
This is a very good CD/DVD set, beautiful music and performance.I enjoyed it.
Magical Sarah Brightman.......2006-12-24
Sarah's voice soars! I love her voice and I'm a new fan. ^^ I've heard her name lots of times before from people I know and when I received some of her CDs and videos as early Christmas present, I was in awe! She definitely has the voice of an angel.
Welcome to the Forbidden.......2006-06-10
"Harem" is probably one of Sarah Brightman's most unique albums to date. Rarely an artist can captivate the sounds of the far east and be able to mix them in well with a western feel. west meets east if you will. Its nearly impossible to pick out one favorite out of the 14 tracks on the album. You can't choose "Harem" over "The War Is Over" or "Arabian Nights". All the songs on the album are the best and do the album justice and fit perfectly in their own way, as the theme is quite clear: Middle-Eastern music with a hint of pop and some club sounds. And while the album could have ended at "Until the End of Time" (yet another beautiful song on the album), Brightman ends the album with "You Take My Breath Away" (originally from her album Fly). Personally, this track should have been only present on "Harem" and not on the album "Fly". An excellent way nonetheless of ending the album.
The DVD shows the making of the album, and the video Harem is also on the DVD along with an alternate version to the video. Its the first time i've ever seen a video from Sarah Brightman and i must say, i'm not disappointed at all.
I'm anxiously awaiting a new album. I'm a new fan of Brightman's and i love what i'm hearing from this album. Highly recommended.

Customer Reviews:
Ugh.......2006-09-24
Most these users don't even comment about "Fly", because most of them just heard "Take My Breath Away" on the radio and they think they have the freedom to critique a CD they didn't buy. Well, "Fly" is not Jessica's best song, but still, I love anything that she sings, because she has the best voice of her generation of singers.
Not nearly as good as the original.......2006-02-12
No good ... way to "breathy" -- in typical Jessica Simpson fashion.
Oh no! .......2005-03-21
I warn everyone please don't buy this! I didn't buy it but I had the misfortune of listening to it on the radio and I was so disappointed! How could Jessica destroy such a beautiful ballad that was sung so wonderfully by Terri Nunn of Berlin??? This is one if not the worse cover songs I've ever heard!
Jessica has a decent voice and I'm not hating her but she needs to do something good. She's got the voice, she needs to stop letting the music industry do it all for her. Maybe if she wrote her own songs and produced her own music, she'd have a bigger fan base. Her songs are really boring if you ask me except for maybe "i think i'm in love with you" with help of John Mellancamp's beat. I wonder how Berlin feels about this remake. I bet they cringe when they hear it.
This song was..........2005-03-10
Berlin was a cool band in the eighties. "The Metro" is still one of my favorite songs. "Take my breath away" finished them off as a group and was an overbearing, schmaltzy mess back "in the day". A remake by one of the cynical "buff gold" blonde pop queens of modern times is fitting. I don't have anything against pop music, but some songs are just too much. One aspect I did like was the warbley fretless [synth?] bass. The songs only redeeming feature.
good rendition.... notas good as the original..........2004-12-31
'take my breathe away' IS one of my favourite 80s songs of all time and quite possibly my wedding song.... berlin did a ingenious job on this song... when i found out that my gal jessica simpson was doing a remake of the song i was stoked and worried at the same time....
nobody really remade the song since it came out 20 years ago.... i love jessicas voice.... she is one of the best singers i have ever heard...
when i finally heard the song on the radio i was shocked that she did a great job with it... she took a risk and i think it worked for her.... too bad her husband nick was edited out of the song.... i think that it would have been a better song with the 2 singing a duet... but we will never know...
if you dont like jessica simpson and love the song do not buy it.... its kind of average....

Customer Reviews:
emma take my breath away!!!!!!!!!!.......2001-12-06
Let me tell you what I think of this single, it's absolutely to buy, there's no doubt that we are in front of the best emma's song. And then, the cd contains a wonderful non-LP track, Close Enconter, if you don't buy this single, you won't ever have the posibility to listen to her, so get up you!!!! put on your shoes, (...) and get 'Take my breah away'.
I remind you that the number one track is Take my breath away (album version), the number two is the no LP track Close Enconter, and as last track there is a Talke my breath away's remix by Tin Tin.
emma: queen of hearts.......2001-12-05
2th single from 'A girl like me', Take my breath is a very sweet song, my device is to buy this cd.
The tracks are three, the first is the album version, the second is a non LP-track, Close encounter, and then there is an interesting version of Take my breath away.
Althought Emma hasn't a so important voice, she is however very good, her song is very nice.
I hope you follow my device and get the cd [...]
It REALLY Does Take My Breath Away!.......2001-09-28
Take My Breath Away iz the third single off Emma's album called 'A Girl Like Me'!This iz a superb single but it never made it to # 1!!Emma iz doing SUPER on her solo career!Emma iz doin the best solo career from all the Spice.I hope Emma's next single would be 'A World Without You' cos I LOVE that song! It's DA BOMB!GO EMMA GO!
This CD will take your breath away........2001-09-03
This is by far the best solo spice song that has been released! The title song is a GRAET love song and the B-side is brilliant.
Great.......2001-09-01
This song is really good.

Just what I was looking for..........2005-06-10
First off, I just want to say that I LOVE the String Quartet Tribute series... I recently discovered these CDs while planning my wedding and am so glad that I did. It's so nice to be able to incorporate modern music into the ceremony without having to worry about the "appropriateness" of the vocals. In addition to the tribute to Jessica Simpson, I also have the String Quartet Tribute to Coldplay. I'm completely satisfied with them both. Granted, I'm by no means a musician, but I do have the ability to appreciate great music. And I feel that these CDs are definitely worth looking into. :)
The songs on this particular album are great - in my opinon, anyway. I especially want to remark on the CD's version of "Take My Breath Away" - absolutely beautiful. I had been looking for an instrumental version of this piece to walk down the aisle to and found exactly what I was looking for on this CD. :)

Product Description
A collection of melody-driven songs with Karen's distinctively passionate vocals, the pop production of Here In My Heart proudly maintains the integrity of the Singer-Songwriter. Mixed by the in-demand Andy Zulla (Jessica Simpson/Backstreet Boys), and with tracks produced by Andy, Julian Harris and Karen, guest musicians include Shawn Pelton (Sheryl Crow/SNL), Ben Butler (Rod Stewart), Richard Hammond (Jonatha Brooke/Shannon Noll) and Max Surla (The Corrs). To celebrate the release of Here In My Heart, Karen was invited to perform at Australia House in London, and a series of private concerts in Germany.

Learn to Grow.......2007-07-01
This is my third Karen Jacobsen disc. She recasts some tracks from Being Brave (title track + "Here In My Heart") & As I Am ("Don't Miss You") into a full band arrangement. While I had become enraptured by her simple piano-based arrangements, the transplanted songs work well. "Strong Woman" is an anthem that sounds like a theme song for woman's mental health day. Karen's vocals are the backbone and strength of her performance on the bubbly "The Best I Can." After a handful of listenings to the disc, I keep trying to get traction here as I did on her other discs. Karen's material seems to wash out a bit behind the band, sounding bland, not overly original, "It's not enough to make you disappear; It's not enough to push you away from here; It's not enough for me to know that this is just the way we have to learn to grow." The title track from her "Being Brave" set is a strong melody that fares well with instruments that serve the melody well. Karen Jacobsen is an excellent singer who is developing as an artist. This disc is one that shows growth; however, it comes across a bit faceless without a few great tracks to make it memorable. That said, her performance is always worth hearing. Enjoy!

I first heard Karen Jacobsen several years ago, when she was new to New York (and America), trying out material on Tuesday nights at a little Greenwich Village bar. She built a steady following, and since then her style has blossomed, and she has also put together a producing team worthy of her musical and songwriting talents.
At first, you might think Jacobsen is just another pop pianist princess-- a less angry Alanis, say, or a not-so-angsty Sarah McLachlan. But listen to the complexity of these melodic lines, not to mention the great range of styles and subjects in her songs. Jacobsen can revel in an emotional anthem ("Not Enough") or tenderly stroke a sweet lullaby ("Being Brave") or stand proud with the what should be Oprah's next theme song ("Strong Woman"). She can make you cry ("Here in My Heart"), or lift you up ("You're OK"). And that's before we even get to the travelogues ("London Town") or the heartbreaking ballads ("Don't Miss You"). Throughout, the stunning piano arrangements and clear, floating vocals will transport you.
From her early NYC days at the Duplex, to her more recent appearances at Joe's Pub, or singing the national anthem at a variety of stadiums around the country, or on this pristinely produced CD, Karen Jacobsen is a musical force to be reckoned with. Discover her now, so you can say you were one of the first!
