Typical Mancini.......2007-03-25

First, I really like Mancini's music generally and I am really concerned that he may be one of the greats of American music who will soon be forgotten if he hasn't been already. (US music schools tend to be a little snobby and don't give a number of truly great American composers their due.) However, the mix of this particular CD is simply too average. Many good songs are not on it and some weak ones are. I would not recommend this CD except to ManciniPhiles like me.

It's Hard to Believe He's Gone.......2006-05-23

Henry Mancini gave us so much of our consciousness of the 1960s and 1970s, and yet was "out" almost as soon as he was "in."

His work became synonymous with much-despised "elevator music" in the later 1960s. This stereotype (or monotype, for his earliest works) can mislead.

For example, "Lujon" [not in this collection] was used in a movie just last year to exemplify mystery and an exotic atmosphere.

Mancini dies way too young. While some would argue that he'd become a self-parody, his innate gifts compromised by relentless commercialization, you cannot take away his lasting gift to our culture. He was an original, and he captured an essence of our collective experience.

He's here in this collection, waiting round the bend, my Huckleberry friend.

En ces temps où le terme de BO est galvaudé (pénible Yann Tiersen, satanés Choristes !), cette compilation est l'occasion de rendre hommage à l'un des grands génies du genre, largement méconnu, et victime d'un des plus incroyables quiproquos de la Musique.
En effet, c'est lui qui a composé l'éternel thème de la Panthère Rose, et son mythique refrain de saxophone, définitivement associés au dessin animé du même nom, et qui invariablement provoquent sourires (voire moqueries) chez les non-initiés... Rappelons qu'au départ La Panthère Rose est un film réalisé par le génial Blake Edwards en 1964, avec l'inénarrable Peters Sellers dans le rôle principal, et que cette fameuse Panthère Rose désigne non pas un sympathique félin, mais un diamant d'une valeur inestimable, et dont le vol est à l'origine du scénario.
Mais sa contribution à l'histoire de la musique ne s'arrête pas là. En effet, on lui doit également le monumental Moon River, titre dont l'insurpassable limpidité mélodique est capable de me porter au bord des larmes en quelques mesures, repris entre autres par Sinatra et Morrissey et susurré par la délicieuse Audrey Hepburn dans Breakfast At Tiffany's. Et c'est toujours lui qui est à l'origine du thème explosif de Peter Gunn, avec sa ligne de basse à réveiller les morts et ses arrangements de cuivres qui traumatiseront toute une génération de compositeurs, Quincy Jones en tête...
En tout cas, cette compilation est une excellente introduction à l'univers de Henry Mancini, qui en mêlant arrangements jazzy, vocaux surannés et mélodies inoubliables, a tout simplement inventé la Lounge music, avant que ce mot ne désigne un vaste fourre-tout pour bobos peu curieux...

This CD is all one needs to understand why this dude is the master when it comes to composing. Having been introduced to this great human being at an early age, my fascination for his work is still a vital part of my being. This CD is just what I have always wanted. It has all the classics, along with some older gems I never knew existed. I love it so much, that I am going to send my mama back home one. She was, is and always will be perhaps his GREATEST FAN ever. If you just can't live without Mancini's music, then this CD is for you. Enjoy, enjoy,

I actually was so pleased to see a CD available because I have been longing for the movie "with a song in my heart" to become available on VHS and then on DVD, and it never has, so now at least I can enjoy the songs from the movie. The cast track from Pal Joey was just an added bonus.

I saw the film, "With A Song In My Heart" when I was twelve or thirteen years old and have wanted the sound track for many years. As an impressionable teenager in the 1950s, I have collected over time many of the films from that time on VHS or DVD, to satisfy my memories of the period. I regret that this particular film is not available on VHS or DVD, but, this CD is the next best choice. It is really enjoyable to hear the richness and depth of the voice of Jane Froman, who was one of the best singers of the time. I can still recall many scenes from the film and this CD revives the memories so well.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART

Susan Hayward played Jane Froman in the film but Froman herself dubbed the vocals. This album of songs was originally issued as a 10" Lp. None of the tracks are taken from the film: They are all studio re-recordings. Later, Capitol re-released it as a 12" LP with two extra songs added. It is that expanded [program included here. Froman is in great voice, though the orchestrations are overly lush and string heavy. Still, the songs include such standards as "It's a Good Day", "Get Happy", and "Embraceable You" making for an enjoyable mini-concert.

PAL JOEY

Capitol's cast album of the 1952 revival has long been a collector's item. The original Lp was deleted in 1960 and did not resurface until Broadway Angel released it on CD (briefly) in 1993. As the stars of the revival Harold Lang and Vivienne Segal had already made a studio cast album for Columbia - an album that helped inspire the revival - they were unable to re-record their songs for Capitol, and the label turned to Jane Froman and Dick beavers to fill in. The revised orchestrations sound dated now, but here is a chance to hear Elaine Stritch singing "Zip" and to enjoy the lusty voice of Helen Gallagher early in her career.

In the end it's the WITH A SONG IN MY HEART selections (making their debut on CD here) that make this CD worthwhile. For PAL JOEY the studio recording (available from SONY) is preferable, however if one is so inclined you can assemble your own cast album of the '52 revival by combining tracks from both releases.

"Pal Joey's" Pal.......2006-07-30

While the legubrious and over-orchestrated songs from the film "With a Song in My Heart" are typical of their era (and Jane Froman's stilted renditions are what once stood for emoting) the "Pal Joey" cast recording is an absolute delight. The orchestrations are bouncy and jazzy in a way that has long been forgotten, and the performances (except for the aforementioned Ms. Froman, whose Vulgnarian renditions are at times quite disconcerting, and who hits the sonic notes like lazer beems but misses the emotional ones by a country mile) are exceptional. Helen Gallagher deserved her Tony from the evidence of this recording, with Elaine Stritch not far behind her. But the overall impact surpasses any recording of "Joey" including the historic one that lead to this revival. There's energy, intensity and a whole lot of fantastic song writing (leave it to to Rogers and Hart) to satisfy any musical theater fan. A must have for anyone who loves "Old Broadway."

Jane Froman was one of the top vocalists of her era. Froman's greatness is celebrated in this new 2-on-1 album, which comprises the film soundtrack of WITH A SONG IN MY HEART as well as the 1952 Broadway revival cast album of PAL JOEY.

WITH A SONG IN MY HEART was the life story of Jane Froman, with the lovely Susan Hayward in the lead role. Froman herself supplied the singing for the film. Numbers include "It's a Good Day", the bittersweet and humorous "They're Either Too Young or Too Old", "Blue Moon", "Get Happy", "Tea for Two" and "I'm Thru with Love".

The 1952 Broadway revival of PAL JOEY was the result of the huge success of a studio album released by Columbia the year before (which featured Vivienne Segal reprising her original role of Vera and Harold Lang as Joey). Segal and Lang headlined the new revival with Helen Gallagher (SWEET CHARITY, HAZEL FLAGG) as Gladys Bumps and Elaine Stritch (ON YOUR TOES, GOLDILOCKS) as reporter Melba Snyder.

Having already recorded their roles for the Columbia album, Segal and Lang saw little need in re-recording them for the revival album on the Capitol label. Instead, the roles of Vera and Joey were covered by Jane Froman and Dick Beavers.

The cast album suffers on many levels. First, the absence of Segal and Lang is quite distracting, and secondly the new Overture can't even compare with the scintillanting original.

The Columbia studio album is the version to buy in addition to this, though both albums have their strong and weak points. As per usual, Elaine Stritch brings her impressive and formidable comic timing to the fore in the show-stopping "Zip", and Helen Gallagher's silvery voice is perfect for "That Terrific Rainbow".

Dire as it might have appeared when Darius Rucker appeared strumming a guitar in full cowboy regalia on a fast food commercial, Hootie & the Blowfish have not gone belly up. In fact, the songs the band uncorks on Looking for Lucky are so quintessential Hootie, right in line with 1994's Cracked Rear View and its 1996 follow-up Fairweather Johnson, that the three middling discs sandwiched between them and this offering could justifiably be yanked from their discography. The first single "One Love" lifts its sentiment (and its title) from Bob Marley, rubbing the master's message of peace and love with shiny pop polish. "State Your Peace" reins in its heavy-handed theme by way of straight-up sunny rock (think "Only Wanta Be with You" doused with some substance). "Leaving" loosens genre constrictions with a new-school bluegrass cut-up. Even a waltz is a thrown in - a cool, hum-along kind of waltz that makes you want to hear more. Looking for Lucky should cancel all concerns that Rucker & company have a long future of hamburger-hawking. --Tammy La Gorce

Like much of mainstream American music, Hootie & The Blowfish have found their groove and settled in a little too well. The songs all sound nice, but each bleeds into the next much too easily. I would mention standout tracks to try, but when songs barely deviate from their comfortable formula of an easy tempo and the same damn three chords... Close your eyes, point, and try a sample song. If you like the thought of 12 tracks of it, you'll be quite pleased with Looking For Lucky. As for myself, I think I'll look elsewhere.

A solid "comeback" effort! Hey Sister Pretty is by far the best track on this cd. Funny..the kids (who don't particularly LIKE Hootie) were caught singing along to the song on the way to school after a few listens. State Your Peace, Can I See You, Get out Of My mind...I could go on! GET THIS CD!!

While it seems like a lifetime ago that Hootie was the "thing" in music, realistically they've been going downhill eversince the mid 90s. But to my surprise, Look For Lucky is a very good album from the first track to the last. I'm give the band much credit for staying together, perservering and releasing a high quality work.

Melissa Etheridge's considerable talents as writer/singer/performer have often seemed confounded by expectations--the artist having burdened herself with more than a few of them. Melissa Etheridge's Lucky is a very great album. i listen to this one all the time it never gets old to me. love the song secret agent and kiss me, very sexy. also the song i am a giant is a very powerful song. i recommend this album to anyone.

Melissa Is Finally Happy.......2007-01-18

I give this album 4 stars because it took me a few listens to really get into it. There is certainly a mix of different messages and a lot of emotions and examination going on with Melissa and her new life that come about in this album. There are a couple of songs that I loved immediately and a couple that like I said above took a couple of listens before I was able to really get into them.

This was the first CD I've ever owned of Melissa's so I didn't know what to expect and didn't go into it with any kind of preset notions of how it should sound so I think it helped me to enjoy the experience more. Since I bought this album I have also purchased three other Melissa Etheridge CD's and you can certainly hear the change in the tone and in her voice.

I love this CD and I would recommend you buy it but I would stay away from comparing it to her other albums. If you like her darker sound you probably won't like this album but if you are like me and don't mind something a little different than what she usually sings then you will love it.

This is a good album, though not her best work, still a good album.

The song "Breathe" is a cover song. It was written and originally recorded by a St. Louis band called Greenwheel on their album Soma Holiday. I love their version so much more.

BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME!.......2006-03-26

I'm a huge fan of all Melissa Etheridge's stuff but, this album just doesn't cut it. It's dissappointing both lyrically and musically. I rarely listen to this cd. I give it 3 stars because I do like In This Moment, When You Find The One, Giant, Secret Agent and Meet Me In The Dark. However, nothing on this album could ever possibly top her previous efforts such as Bring Me Some Water, Ain't It Heavy, It's For You, Come To My Window, Yes I Am, Breakdown, Stronger Than Me, The Different, Lover Please, the list goes on and on. I think I like Melissa better when she's a little bitter, jaded and out of love! Better LUCK next time!

Full of surprises!.......2007-02-03

I learned about Eigsti late last year from the November 2006 issue of "Jazziz" magazine. Not only was he on the cover but the sampler CD that came with the magazine also featured his song "Get Your Hopes Up" with its brilliant interplay between Eigsti and Julian Lage. I only had to hear the first few bars to know that this was a dude whose music I had to know more about. I was surprised (surprise #1) to learn that he already had several CDs under his belt before this one. I was also surprised (surprise #2) to learn that this particular CD had been out almost a year!

According to the article in the magazine "former child prodigy" Eigsti doesn't like a fuss being made about his age. He especially wants this album "to be seen as a musical statement and not in terms of 'good for [his] age'". At 21, he says he'd rather not see the word "youth" mentioned in any reviews of his work at all. Lucky for me then that he probably won't be reading this one but I was truly staggered (surprise #3) to learn he was so young. But then I considered the fact that Herbie Hancock was only 22 when he released "Takin' Off" and that I had never once made an issue of that fact; it was, and always ever has been, all about the music. So I see his point and will thus never mention his age again, not even among my friends.

Previous reviewers have said all that needs to be said, really. The man and this CD are simply awesome. I was shocked though, (surprise #4) to learn that "I've Seen It All", probably my favourite song on the whole album, is not just a cover but a Bjork song. An e-correspondent of mine has been urging me for some time now to get into Bjork but I've always resisted. I think I might check her out now though if she writes songs this good.

Other covers like "Giant Steps", "Love For Sale" and "Woke Up This Morning" (or the "Sopranos" song) are all handled well and Eigsti is surrounded by top-notch talent like Christian McBride (bass), James Genus (bass) Lewis Nash (drums) and Julian Lage (guitar). Even so, this album really is all about him and his piano playing. His own compositions, "Get Your Hopes Up", "Argument", "True Colors" (written with Julian Lage) and "Adventure One" are all just as brilliant. It's the ballads that I usually love the most and rarely like fast-paced playing but I was surprised (surprise #5!) to realise that even on the fast-moving cuts on this CD, (like "Freedom Jazz Dance" for instance), I was thoroughly enjoying myself.

Surprises all round then, and a thoroughly enjoyable CD. The album is produced, recorded and mixed by Al Schmitt. I remember him doing excellent work recording and mixing alongside producer Tommy LiPuma on albums by people like George Benson, Joe Sample, Natalie Cole and even Diana Krall. He's done a great job here; the music is crystal clear.

Taylor Eigsti's "Lucky to be Me" is wonderful!!1.......2006-08-25

What a find for me when I ordered this album. I had not heard of Taylor Eigsti before, but knew I would like his music by the samples I was able to hear first. His ability to play the piano far surpasses anything I had hoped for. He is amazing. But it is more than just his incredible talent. He has an astonishing way of communicating a language of music, a voice from many brilliant artists from the past, yet a very distinct style of his own that is captivating and exciting. I love his work. And the other players on this album compliment it so well, as they are wonderful artists too. It is a superb album, and I look forward to getting more of his work.

Listening to this brilliant 20 year old, I kept asking myself what this guy needs to grow into as a pianist. Much of what I thought might be missing I suddenly heard. So the question is, where does he go from here? What a delicious thought to contemplate.

Seems to be now emulating Joe Sample somewhat in his style on this CD. I had watched him develop a unique style over the past decade during his schooling at the Stanford Jazz workshops and also here in the San Jose area. He seems to be wandering from his early years IMHO. Great talent though and one of the better pianists.

I got this CD with the other two new Concord releases (Christian Scott and Erin Boheme). Its amazing how Taylor seems to be an accomplished veteran musician yet is only in his 20's I believe! The CD is great, its soulful and imaginative, while the piano skills are nicely crafted, for all jazz and piano fans this is a great CD to listen to, Taylor has a big future.

I love Singin' in the Rain. It was the movie that made me like musicals, not those simple, mellow movies like South Pacific and the Sound of Music, but REAL musicals, with people like Fred Astaire or Eleanor Powell tapping their hearts out, or great singers like Frances Langford or Dick Powell putting over a song like they mean it.The Singin' in the Rain 2disc special edition introduced me to my favorite movie, the Broadway Melody of 1936, the MOST AMAZING MOVIE EVER! So I was so glad when my parents got me the soundtrack to Singin' in the Rain, and besides the music of the 1951 versions of the Nacio Herb Brown/Arthur Freed, there are also the original versions of the songs in their original movies. I am so glad that Rhino put the duet of Robert Taylor and June Knight singing I've Got a Feelin' You're Foolin' on this CD set! It's my favorite song, and now I can listen to it! Hooray!! It's the best song EVER!! There's also vocals of Charles King singing the Broadway Melody, which is great! And many more, like Bing Crosby, Frances Langford, Jeanette MacDonald, and other great singers I can't think of right now. This CD set is great, the sound is nice and un-staticy (mostly), there are 30-plus songs, and the price is phenomenal. I love my favorite song, and now I can listen to it all day long!! Yay! :)

Wonderful Soundtrack to a Wonderful Movie.......2006-06-16

Yes, this is it--the first real musical I ever saw. Okay, I saw "Wizard of Oz" and "The Sound of Music", and I love both of those musicals dearly. I had even seen "My Fair Lady." I thought musicals were all like those. Until this one. I had never seen such dancing. And this CD causes me to relive the joy of the musical each time I listen to it. Complete with the tap sounds. I love that they included even the deleted songs. Now we just need a DVD that has all the deleted scenes in context. But the studio probably threw all those away. Oh well, our imaginations can take care of what is missing.

The Midwest has turned out some great rock bands in its time, working bands, no-nonsense bands that rock hard for their days pay. Head East is right up there on the list. Known by most for their widely-anthologized classic rock radio staple Never Been Any Reason, they never quite got their props outside their home territory for the great body of work they created during the late Seventies and early Eighties. Wed like to redress that wrong, at least in a small way, by releasing 1977s Getting Lucky and 1978s Head East for the first time anywhere on compact disc. The music still sounds phenomenal, thanks in part to a careful remastering from the original tapes by Universal Masterings Erick Labson. New notes have been penned by noted critic Scott Schinder for this release as well. But when all is said and done, it comes down to the tunes. We defy you to sit still when Call To Arms And Legs comes rockin out of the subwoofer. The acoustic guitar opening of Back In My Hands sounds as crisp and clear as if Mike Somerville were in the room with you, and Roger Boyds trademark synth lines sizzle right through the mix. And these guys had a great insight into one of the key elements of rock: they knew how to have a good time while they were playing, and they were able to convey it to the audience. These are park-your-Trans-Am, knock-back-a-couple-of-beers and party-all-night-long records. We could use more of them.

I know I'm preaching to the choir as no one is just going to stumble onto this review, so it'll be to the point. Yes, they should've been bigger than they were instead of being limited in appeal to over-40 Midwestern natives, etc etc. We can all agree on that.

I think Head East's second and third albums, "Get Yourself Up" and "Gettin Lucky" were their best, and the most under-represented on the otherwise decent 20th Century Masters CD. While "Get Yourself Up" is still not available on CD, "Gettin' Lucky" is the first half of this CD. Boyd was at the top of his game with the keyboards and synthesizers, Somerville was great with both acoustic guitar and the power chords, and the entire album is clean-sounding and more importantly, re-mastered well. Best tunes are the title track with the snarling organ, "Back In My Own Hands" with the aforementioned acoustic and synthesizers and my favorite, "Call to Arms and Legs"; a once-dated but somehow relevant-again environmental message but more impotantly, about as hard-charging a tune they've ever done. You want to turn that one up loud, women, children and dogs be damned.

Their eponymous (I love that word) fourth album is the back half of this CD, and not quite as strong as "Gettin' Lucky" as they de-emphasized the keyboards and synthesizers for guitar power (the further and largely unsatisfactory changes seen in the subsequent "A Different Kind of Crazy", I think, was a precursor toward this band's demise). However, it still works well if you're a fan. This album contained Russ Ballard's "Since You Been Gone", the only Head East tune you ever hear on the radio other than "Never Been Any Reason". Other good tracks include "Open Up the Door", "Man I Wanna Be" and "Dance Away Lover". This album has a lot of upbeat lyrics with some spiritually-tinged numbers, perhaps a precursor to Schlitt's later career as a member of the Christian rock band Petra.

You have to be a fan, but if you are, this is a must-have.

After playing the haunting organ intro to the Animals' "House of the Rising Sun," Alan Price went solo and carved himself a niche (in England, at least) as a pop craftsman. For many, his most enduring contribution has been this soundtrack to Lindsay Anderson's allegorical 1973 film about a coffee salesman. Price's characteristic keyboard flourishes are all over tracks like "Pastoral" and "Arrival," while the biting wit of "Poor People" and "Sell Sell" never once overshadows the innate tunefulness of the songs. "O Lucky Man!" (1973), directed by Lindsay Anderson (with Ralph Richardson, Malcolm McDowell and Helen Mirren) is a constant source of joy when I watch it again and again. Off I go with Mick Travis (McDowell) in his crazy surreal journey up and down, back and forth, "around the world in circles" along with the Alan Price's band that provide the music commentaries in the traditions of a Greek Chorus or Brecht's Theater. I love his songs to the film very much. It is possibly the best use of a rock soundtrack in a film. I am a proud CD owner and I listen to it constantly - in my car, at work, while exercising. It is short; ten songs only last for 25 minutes but what the minutes they are. Each song, every note and each word feel so perfectly simple and so joyously cool that you can't forget them. For many years, after I saw the film for the first time, I used to sing to myself from time to time, especially if I was sad or confused or would face the important and not easy decisions:

"Everyone is going through changes
No one knows what's going on.
And everybody changes places
But the world still carries on." -
and the song would always make me feel better. Eventually, it has become the important part of my life philosophy.

The most famous and deservingly so is the title song, "O Lucky Man" which was presented in the movie not once but two times, in the opening scene and in the final one. The second rendition is perhaps the best track on the CD, the most memorable scene in the movie and the best performance by Alan Price. I can go on forever about the disc, the songs, their melodies and the lyrics but it is better to hear them once than to try to describe them. They are all wonderful, as much as the film is and the film would definitely not be the same without Alan Price, his band and his songs and instrumental compositions for the film ("Pastoral", "Arrival"). I just want to name the songs and their lyrics:

"O Lucky Man!":
If you have a friend on whom you think you can rely -

Glad to see this is finally available (again). It was on CD a number of years ago, only to disappear. I got really lucky when I bought it from a music warehouse I had been doing business with for 20 years. I bought 2 CD's (a Leonard Cohen and a Van Morrison one), and he had a bunch of cutout copies of this, and he sent me it for free! Despite that, if I had to pay 18 bucks for this CD, would I do it? Hell, yes! Every song on it is a gem. Even having 2 different versions of O Lucky Man! is excellent, as they are vastly different interpretations (the 2nd one that closes the album is the most rousing one). This album could stand on its own even if it wasn't a soundtrack (by the way, the film is fantastic as well). I play this CD a lot. It's one of the best soundtrack albums ever. It's Alan Price's most famous work (aside from his Animals work and his cameo in Dylan's Don't Look Back), and it's wonderful everytime you hear it. Buy it now before it goes out of print again. And see the movie too!

Montrose version of "Lucky Man" much better.......2003-12-11

I searched for years to find the Montrose version of Alan Price's "A Lucky Man", which is not to be confused with the ELP song that is much more famous. It's on "Warner Brothers Presents Montrose", and it is inspiring, uplifting, fist in the air good. The lyrics give you a chill:

"If you have a friend on whom you think you can rely you are a lucky man,
If you have a reason to live on and not to die you are lucky man,
Preachers and poets and scholars don't know it,
Temples and statues and steeples won't show it,
If you've got the secret just try not to blow it,
Stay a lucky man, a lucky man."

I caught the movie, O Lucky Man! on television years and years ago, and never knew the actual title. The funny thing was, I only caught a total of fifteen minutes of it. I never forgot it. I was totally unaware of the "trilogy", and of the beautiful soundtrack, until I tried to buy all three movies at the same time for different reasons. If you don't know, "If", "O Lucky Man", and "Brittania Hospital" are the movies, all great. When I saw this movie in total, the first thing that caught me was Alan Price. Not the music, his face. The brilliant stroke was just to have him in it. You are not just listening to music while watching something else. It's Alan Price singing and playing. And he is affecting. There's is something sly, and smart-assed, in his face and lyrics. This sounds like a rave for the movie, which is how I came by it, but the music itself, without aid at all, is so deft and smart in it's own right, that it really only adds to it to see it performed. Every line, from beginning to end, is like Price himself. Most notably, "Look over your shoulder" affects me the most. Musically, it is very sly and very deft. Try to Play it. Lyrically, it is the perfect note for the soundtrack itself. The beginning is all catch-phrases. Happy stuff. And out rolls the happy lines "...there's always someone coming after you". This is, in my opinion, the best that the early seventies had to offer. I agree with the 9/11 stuff, but I think it still belongs in its era. Phil Ochs had already gotten there himself, at a cost to himself, but only Alan Price could have written such great music to match a film like that. Also quite notable are "Justice", a personal favourite, and "changes", a parody of a song that I could not get out of my head for years. I still remember snatches at Baptist churches with my parents and now I only remember Alan's lines, thankfully.
Not forgetting, "my home town", simple but great. "Poor People". very mean to say that poor people just don't understand the way things really work. Half of the album is an instruction book in how to rise above, and forget, the working class. But it is all so clever, and the main theme restates it. It has an open interpretation as well, not my favourite, musically. If you are a fan of movies, it is an uncommon soundtrack. If you are a fan of the seventies, well, who knows? It is the cream of the crop, in my opinion. If you are a music fan or a musician, it is absolutely essential that you buy this album right now and learn from it. By the way, I am going to buy it right now. I only wish there was more of it. But the tracks on it are the crucial ones that you hear(and see) in the movie. Alan Price is an amazing composer and singer(and musician).

Dave Koz is the definitive artist for smooth jazz. The cut "You Make Me Smile" does just what the title says. "Tender Is the Night" shows how to take a beutiful ballad and turn it into the smoothest of smooth.

Lucky Man When I First Heard Koz.......2003-11-23

I remember travelling the Connecticut countryside listening to CD101.9 out of NYC when the announcer played the title cut "Lucky Man." I was immediately hooked. I went out and bought the CD. Dave Koz's ballads top the charts in sensuality, and are unmistakebly 5 star quality. "Tender Is the Night" is another one of my personal favorites from the CD. Sometimes when I hear Tender is the Night, I drift into quiet reverie and enjoy every minute of it. THis CD is spectacular. The two aforementioned songs a true jazz connoisseur will savor. If you don't have this CD, please treat yourself to this tasteful listening enjoyment.

Wide variety of songs, many guests artists.......2003-06-27

Koz's second CD Lucky Man is not as good as his first, but there are still many good songs on this CD. The second song, "You Make Me Smile," is one of the coolest smooth jazz songs I've ever heard, because of the numerous chord changes. I also love the uplifting, energetic "Saxman," which features many guest musicians, such as Maceo Parker on alto sax and Tower of Power's "Doc" Kupka on bari sax. "After Dark" is also a cool sounding, slow funk tune that's loaded with percussion. This CD is a melting pot of peppy, funk songs and slow ballads with many guest musicians, and Dave has proven that he is one of the greatest "Saxmen" in the world.
